Hello I have an Asus ROG gl764g that is not powering on, no leds light up when the charger is connected. No sound, light, etc when pressing the power button. Changing the battery did nothing. I began to measure the voltages because I suspect one of the mosfets to be faulty. On picture I wrote down the voltages in V and mV. I also checked for continuity (maybe shorts) to the ground and when present indicated it with blue color of the voltages, otherwise its green. I also found some schematics of a similar board and it should be the same. I need help diagnosing the exact faulty piece. Thanks

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some help with picking out a new laptop. I'm selling my PC and current laptop to get one that I can use at home with a monitor and in the university. I've just started studying Civil Engineering at university. I need a laptop that's powerful enough to handle all my coursework (CAD, Revit), with a good graphics card for the job. I don't need a huge screen, but at least 14 inches would be nice. Also, since there aren't many power sockets in my classrooms, I need a laptop with a battery that lasts a while. If anyone has any recommendations or tips based on what they've used for engineering stuff, I'd really appreciate it. Whether it's a specific brand or just features to look out for, I'm all ears. Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!

Hello everyone! I just bought the latest Anker 737 PowerBank (24k/140W) and when I connected it (using the cable it came with, capable of 140W) to my Asus ROG Strix G713QM-ES94 to the USB-C PD port (in the back), it just goes to 9 W and stops, and goes up to 9 W and stops (PC (Armoury Crate) shows a notification that it is charging, and stops, charging and stops), in an infinte loop... I did use the old cable from the previous Anker power bank (26800 PD 45w) I had and it goes up to ~58.5w sustained. Both cables are Anker, they came with their respective power banks. I don't have another PD device capable of 100W or more, but when I charge the power bank with the 140W cable, it charges at around ~89W (using an Anker GaNPrime 120W, capable of 100W in total on any of the 2 USB-C)... I have no idea if I have a driver issue, or what is going on... I did try connecting the computer to the GaNPrime 120W charger and it worked perfectly fine (no idea at what rate it is being charged at). I did also return the power bank for a new one; Anker and I thinking it could be defective, but the same thing happened. I also tried using the old power bank with the new cable and it did work out of the box (of course it is slow but I did not have this weird loop). I also tried connecting the power bank when the notebook is off and it charges at ~30W but goes down to 0w (same loop, just delivers more power). What can I do? Is this a driver issue? (everything is up-to-date, using Windows 11) I have tried uninstalling the "battery" driver that shows up on windows (also by recommendation of ASUS on one of theirs FAQ pages) but still the same issue... Thanks anyone for any insights!

Hello, I'll try to share this doubt briefly, but I have already searched for this answer everywhere, and I need some support. I had a 2023 Dell 5430 notebook for work purposes. In the office, I usually work with a DELL D6000 or DELL WD22TB4 dock and 1 or 2 monitors (no seat is fixed for anyone there, so it depends on availability) with ethernet. Everything works fine. When I go home, I use the same dock models (but are mine), always two monitors (an ultrawide 26" LG and a wide 21,5" HP), and ethernet or wifi (500 MB fast connection). But at home, always when I need a bit more graphics to be used (be it a PowerPoint presentation or a TEAMS meeting) the GPU use goes to 99% and the notebook becomes unusable until I reboot it. My company gave me (after several tests, and driver updates) a 7490 notebook from 2019 that the battery was not working and only works connected to the power source, and this notebook never had those issues. I searched a lot for this issue, some said it was a TEAMS issue, but sometimes it happened during other activities, and no one else at my company has those issues, and the 7490 didn't have as well when I'm home. After a lot of tests from Dell, they replaced my 5430 with a 5440 with i7 and 1 TB SSD, for about 2 to 3 weeks I thought the problem was solved. But now the problem is back. I have already made several tests here at home; connecting to the wifi, or through ethernet cable, leaving only 1 monitor or 2, disabling graphic features... this happens again, at some point. I'm going nuts. I wanna know what's wrong in my house (I have other PCs/MACs/videogames and no other device has this sort of issue). Can anyone please help?

As you can see with the picture, my screen broke. This is an ASUS ROG STRIX laptop, model G733ZW-XS96 with a MFD:2022-09. I need a replacement, it's not in warranty and I'm not willing to send it to ASUS only to be assessed unknown charges to "diagnose" what is a clear problem. I would appreciate any help in locating somewhere to buy a replacement screen as the parts provider ASUS provided is being difficult to navigate. Thanks everyone!

I have a cheap evoo ev-c-116-1 that my sister gave me but the usb port, headphone jack and sd card reader don't work, because the ribbon cable i have now in the laptop has a little split in the body of the ribbon, which causes these ports to not function. It's a 40 pin ribbon, but i can't find it anywhere. i don't know about these ribbons so i don't know if i can use another ribbon with the same specs. Any help would be great

Hi, I bought a 30,000 mah PD power bank which provides 65W of power to my laptop. But when I plug it into the Thunderbolt 4 port, it powers the laptop for the first second, then the power bank charges itself via the type C port. How can I prevent this?

I'm sure most people know that OEMs like HP have NIC whitelists in the BIOS. I've talked to numerous agents and the HP forum, most of whom have no clue what it is or doesn't know what laptops are affected. I have no clue how to check, nor do I know if my laptop is even affected. Based on what I've read about, HP claims they stopped back in 2013, however there have been laptops in 2015 that still had a whitelist within the BIOS. Does anyone here know how, if it's even possible, to check the HP BIOS for whitelists. I'm going to just leave some laptop info here, if anyone can help me out because I've found absolutely no information. Name: HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC Model: E020DX System SKU: E4W31UA#ABA BIOS Version: Insyde F.39 BIOS Date: 3/24/2017 CPU: AMD A8 5550M Current WiFi Card: Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 If anyone can help me figure out if there's a BIOS whitelist, please do because I don't want to buy a wifi card just for it to not post. I could go with a card with an HP part number that would work, but it's way overpriced for what it offers.

Hello, I have been searching for a laptop a long time now. I have this requirement list. The price Limit would be at approximately 2000€: -IR Camera (Windows Hello) -at least 500 cd/m² Display (if I'm outside) -AMD Processor (because of energy efficiency) -good Keyboard (like the Lenovo Thinkpads have) -full sized Numpad -at least 15 inch Display size -usb c charging -at least 16gb RAM (but doesn't matter if exchangeable) -at least 500gb SSD Nvme m.2. (but doesn't matter if exchangeable) -a fairly big battery -best with a internal graphics card (because of energy efficiency) -business laptop formfactor Is this even possible? I think so. My goal is a notebook with: -long battery life -work outside in the sun -easy carryable -usb c port for charging -big enough Display for programming, but not too big about 15 inches -nice keyboard with full size numpad -face login I want to use it mainly for programming. Currently I have a custom configured Lenovo e15 gen2 AMD (https://www.lenovo.com/at/de/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/ThinkPad-E15-AMD/p/22TPE15E5A2). The closest notebook i've found is the Dell XPS 15 9510, but it does have a seperate graphics card, there is no AMD-Version, the keyboard doesn't have a Numpad. I know you guys have fairly more experience with different Laptops What's your opinion? Do you have any recommendations?

Hey guys, I just started working at a new place and, amongst other things, I will have to do 3D renderings with Cinema4D. Until now I’ve used a Threadripper (2990WX, 128gb ram) workstation for this. But I will be working at home as well as at the office from now on so it won’t be possible to use a Workstation from now on. So I’m searching for a powerful notebook for CPU-Rendering with as much CPU-Horsepower as I can get and at least 64, preferably 128gb ram. Because I‘m travailing about an hour by bicycle, boat and bus, it would be great if it would be as light as possible (yes I know, power and portability don’t go hand in hand, but still). Battery life isn’t a concern at all, for my purposes it wouldn’t need a battery at all. And I don’t really care about the graphicscard, maybe not an integrated one, but apart from display output I don’t use it. I‘ve been searching for the 5950x XMG Aero 15 witch had a review on ltt, but it seems like it has been discontinued. And the new 13 inch MacBook Pro with the M1Max would have been a dream, but sadly one crucial piece of software doesn’t support it yet. Do you have any recommendations for me? Price isn’t really the matter, although it shouldn’t be unnecessary expensive (I have to sell it to my bosses). But I know performance costs. Thanks in advance! JP

Budget (including currency): 200 Usd Country: Brazil Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Game emulation, movies, Parsec... Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I want to buy a Ryzen 5 2500u from Aliexpress. The current APU and GPU crisis is letting budget pc's to expensive. Under a 100 Usd you can buy a Motherboard with the cpu in ali from multiple stores. I wanna plug on my tv to become my emulating console and watch movies. But i don't wanna buy a screen to directly put my notebook or buy native keyboard and mouse. Some notebooks don't directly recognize than you pluged in another screen and do the transmition. Also, may be dificult to acess the bios. Because theres little to no expecific recomendation i'm here to ask suggestions and what you guys think about it.

Dear Linus Tech Tips Forum, i am currently in the market for a new laptop, but i do not want to spend that much money, because i will not need it so often, so i went on ebay, and found an offer for a macbook 12inch 2016 for 300 euros. It's the perfect formfactor for me (very thin and light), but i am concerned about it's performance. It only has an intel core m3 from late 2015 early 2016 (skylake), and although i only want to draw with a drawingtablet, write texts, make some music with fl studio edit some 24fps 1080p videos and maybe play some half life cs 1.6 or minecraft, i suspect the performance of the chip to be insufficient, and i am not familiar with mac Os. What do you think? Does the chip hold up? Is it a good offer? Are there problems with mac Os i have to watch out for? Thanks in advance

Hello guys, I have just bought a new monitor (Philips 345e2ae) which works perfectly with my work laptop (Dell Latitude 7320 2in1, Intel Core i5-1145G7). The problem I run into is the following: When I connect the display to my personal notebook (Lenovo IdeaPad C340, AMD Ryzen 5 3500U), it just runs at 30Hz. In the Windows settings, this is also the only setting I can select. When I try to create a custom resulution in the AMD Software, it says that the resolution is not compatible with the display, which is very strange because it works fine with the other notebook. When I "force" the resolution using CRU, it doesn't work either and the AMD Software shows that FreeSync is not compatible anymore (Before is was just between 30 and 48Hz). My next assumption was, that the HDMI-Link isn't fast enough for that bandwidth. I don't know much about different HDMI versions, but my laptop can drive my TV (4K, 60Hz) just fine. I read something about color profiles online and that I should switch from RGB to YCbCr but the AMD Software doesn't show that as an option and my work notebook runs in RGB-mode as well. Sadly I sold my Desktop-PC a few months ago, so I can't test with it. I'm out of ideas now and I hope some of you can help me

Hello, recently I want to undervolt my notebook to decrease the temperature. However, I don't know why it can't let me adjust the voltage in Intel XTU. It is also the same on Throttlestop. The FIVR Control in Throttlestop doesn't show me it's locked. Does anyone know why and how to solve it? My computer is MSI GL65 9SEK. I have followed some tutorials to enable the overclock in Bios but seems it does not work.

So... COVID and stuff. My parents business got wiped out pretty much and we are not able to afford rent anymore in their studio, or it is just not worth it anymore basically. Thus, they want to fully convert to online streaming. My dear mother needs a laptop to record, edit and cut videos. Her old macbook sadly cannot keep up with the requirements and recording always skips a few frames. They would like a windows based laptop with good specs. I sadly have no clue about laptops and the technology required for recording/editing, as I am only using my PC for gaming/university. Any recommendations? Dell XPS? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, this is my first post here in the forum.

Hi guys! At work my boss runs an acer notebook, I'm not quite sure on the full spec but it's not exactly a powerhouse! He wants to run 2 displays off of it but only has 1 HDMI output. I suggested getting a thunderbolt dock and running 2 displays off of that. My first question is would it have a massive effect on performance? (laptop is only really used for excel and such) would it also be able to extend them as 2 seperate displays or would it just mirror them? Any responses I get are really appreciated and I hope this hasn't already been asked!

Hey guys I need some advice to choose my go-to latop/notebook for web development. Critical factors: - must be lightweight - decent battery life (let's say 10-12hrs+) - screen size: 13" - 15" (optimal would be 14") Nice-to-have aspects: - USB 3.0 - SSD - backlit keyboard The point is to have a system on the go with me in case I need to fix/edit something, or just want to lay on the couch while coding. No fancy stuff needed, I'm down to new as well as to used offers/suggestions. This will not be used to anything else, perhaps the usual stuff: YouTube (to watch Linus ofc), social media, office work (Excel, Word, maybe PPT) Budget is around 400 USD. Thanks four the help!

Hello people of tech, well i live in Germany and i im an Engineering student. I wanted to buy the ROG ZEPHYRUS G14 cause of it’s Portability, it’s weight, it’s sleek design and it’s amazing performance. The high end version of it costs in Germany just about 2400/2500€ equipped with RTX 2060, Ryzen 9 4900HS, 16Gb Ram and 1 Tb M.2. Does it makes sense though to wait till the zen 3 chips from amd arrive to the Notebook market? How long would it take till the new amd chips arrive to notebooks and we can buy those ?

Hi, I have an old HP Notebook 15-bs212wm. It's hard drive died a while back and needs a replacement as well as replacements for all the missing screws for the outer shell. I attached a picture of the drive port because I'm not really familiar with what it is. I thought it might be msata but it's got far too few pins for me to think that's the case. In addition, I'd like to go solid state if possible so if anyone knows if they're compatible with this port, let me know. As for the screws, does anyone know of a way to figure out what sizes are right so I don't put one through the PCB? I gave a brief glace at HP's support page for the notebook but haven't dug deep to see if there are screw listings. Any help would be lovely. Thanks.

Update: My acquaintance has more experience with repairing notebook than me so I asked him to replace thermal paste. He said it was solid and is waiting for ordered paste. Hi, my 2,5 years old notebook lagged on Pop OS while calling with my friend, running modded Minecraft in the background and using Firefox. After that lag I can't run or install any OS. I tried different RAM sticks, SSD formatting, setting UEFI to default, but nothing helped. I tried to run memtest86, but it lagged (state when it lagged is in the screenshot). Also at the memtest86 CPU temperature when it lagged was 84°C. Could there be a problem with the thermals? I never changed the thermal paste. I tried memtest86 again and it lagged exactly on the same test but 10 seconds earlier. model: ROG STRIX SCAR III G531GW (upgraded) RTX 2070 I7-9750H 16GB RAM (on the screenshot)/32GB RAM Hyperx KF426S15IB1K2/ 1TB SSD INTEL 660p 1TB HDD WD Black I put here also a screenshot after Linux Mint installation error.

What I Did: After I fixed the DVD drive and installed Ubuntu on this machine I discovered that the WiFi card was broken as it wouldn't register. I replaced that with one from a HP mini and let everything update. Three weeks after, it was too slow for me. Only 2GB of RAM was killing me so I nabbed another stick and tried swapping the processor. No luck with that but the RAM upgrade went fine. Next was the HDD, Kingston 300V 60GB SSD is the boot drive now. I got rid of the DVD drive all together and bought an adapter so I can keep the original 120GB drive for mass storage. One install of windows 10 later and I'm looking at an almost brand new laptop. Apart from the faded and scratched paintwork. The final steps in this project were to remove the speakers, never used them, and to spray the casing black. Unfortunately, the primer I used had a poor hold in some places. Resulting in some faded patches. I decided that trying to fix them would probably make it worse anyway. Everything was working fine, until my BIOS calmed to be corrupted. happened out of the blue on day at college, when I restarted it was fine but had a password. Still haven't managed to get past this. Phoenix and Dell passwords don't work. I need an eeprom programmer to get it. Until then I have got by with access to the boot loader menu. Today I took apart the machine and replaced the heat sink and fan. Used some of the MX2 paste for my GPU mods. Here are some images of the mod. This wasn't what I had hoped to add to the blog today but I had issues with the other build, I've had to shuffle my days around for the next two weeks. I'll put the plan at the bottom of the entry. Whats Next?: This Saturday I am in my office, building desks and worktops ready for the build coming Sunday. I will let out more details on this in Saturdays entries to this blog. I have so much stuff arriving next week that it might be hard to get big updates out for the Smokey Attempts blogs, not to say there won't be updates. I will have the summative GPU mod on the Drawer blog for next Sunday and big updates of the dedicated Red Mod blog next Friday and Saturday. As for other things, I have some old hardware that I'm going to be doing some mad stuff with. I'm planning some oil cooled stuff for next month so keep an eye out for that. Other that those things I will still be uploading snippets to this blog about random things like tiny heat sinks, buying experiences and what not. Thank You :)
