Hello there, This topic relates back to my previous posts about purchasing my first laptop. Since then, I've purchased a Dell XPS 17 with a 10th generation i9, 32 GB of ram, a 1 TB SSD, NVIDIA 2060 w/ Max Q, and the 1920 * 1200p display (basically 1080p with 16:10 screen ratio). Since I ordered this straight from Dell's website, I'll be receiving my new laptop in the near future, and after talking to a Dell Service Rep (who was pretty helpful in my experience), he said that I could receive a full refund (within 30-day limit) if I'm not satisfied with my purchase, and honestly, I've been having some second thoughts. Some background on my decision process for laptops: I'll be going into college for Mechanical Engineering as a freshman and I'm in the market for a professional-looking laptop that has great processing power (Intel i7 or i9 or something similar), has at least 16 GB of ram, and has decent graphics to handle AAA titles at a smooth/ minimum 60 fps (I plan on playing games like Doom Eternal, Resident Evil Village, and Forza). A high refresh rate screen (100-120 Hz +) would also be nice, though I plan on getting a monitor for my dorm where I plan to do most of my gaming, which'll have a high refresh rate anyways. Firstly, I'm bit concerned about 10th vs 11th generation Intel processors. I've seen on Dave2D's channel that these 11th generation processors are outperforming comparable Ryzen processors in outright performance, and knowing that the 10th generation Intel processors performed noticeably worse than the Ryzen processors, I feel like I may be missing out on a big upgrade in performance. Secondly, I'm starting to wonder if the 2060 in the Dell XPS 17 would be able to provide the performance I want when playing AAA titles, and I'm also curious how it would handle Minecraft with and without Ray Tracing. I'm a little worried that I'll be falling behind on laptops equipped with NVIDIA 30-series graphics (or Ryzen similar). Third, I'm wondering if I should keep looking for other laptops besides the XPS 17. I should say that the reason I ended up purchasing the XPS 17 was because it had a powerful i9 processor, lots of ram, and - what I was under the impression as, and am still a little confused if it is - a good graphics card (again, we're talking about a 2060 with Max Q, and I honestly have no idea how good/ bad it is in today's age). But more importantly, I was really attracted to it's overall fit, finish, and design: I loved the 16:10 display with its ultra-thin bezels, I really liked its build quality, and when I tried out an XPS 13 in person, I was also in love with the keyboard, and could really see myself using this as my every-day work station. If you folks have any recommendations for other options, here's my priorities: firstly, finding something that looks professional (or "Macbook-esque" or that just generally looks professional/ good looking, and not flashy/ "gamer-like"), and second is that it has enough CPU/ GPU power to handle AAA games. I could deal with 16 GB of ram, though I wouldn't want to go lower, and I wouldn't want to go below and i7/ Ryzen 7. A 4K display would be an added bonus if the laptop doesn't come in 1080p or 1440p, and if it has a high refresh rate, that would also be an added bonus. If you folks can help me out again, I'd be truly grateful (and hey, if this topic/ question can get on the LTT YouTube channel, that'd also be pretty cool )

Hey guys, My name is Benjamin and I'm an aspiring computer engineer. I like science, gaming and almost anything that's related to computers, Which leads me to that: I'm going to buy my first laptop (not desktop) because of mobility, even if I'm losing battery life. I have made my decision: I'll run linux off of it(Debian or ubuntu) and I have a 1100$ budget. I am going to program on it, learn, watch movies, and game. I've already found a MSI laptop for this price: it has a core i7 6700hq, a 256gB ssd(+1tB HD), a gtx 970m with a 17 inch screen. I was wondering if it was a bit overkill for my needs but I want to have comfortable performance for 5 to 6 years. So I'd like your advices and opinion and why not giving me any other laptop recommandations. Thanks, Benjamin.

Hello all, In about a month I will be entering University. While I am trying to decide my courses (most likely computer science/programming classes) I would like to find a laptop beforehand. I enjoy playing SOURCE engine games (Half Life 2, Garry's Mod, and other Valve related games), Heroes of the Storm, Fallout 3, and possibly Overwatch in the near future. I have found a laptop with my desired specs (8GB-12GB RAM (DDR4 preferred), 1TB+ HDD (combination HDD and SDD is acceptable), CPU on par with an i5/i7 (MUST BE QUAD), UHD screen, 2-in-1s are priority) but I am not sure how well it will perform. I do not expect to run these on high/ultra settings (more like low/medium, as higher graphical options are not expected by me). (HP Envy x360 - 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - AMD FX - 8GB Memory - AMD Radeon R7 - 1TB Hard Drive) I am open to suggestions and my price point is up to $700 USD One last question: Does anybody have reservations for AMD chips over Intel's? I would like to hear why if there is any opposition.

Hi everybody, Long time follower, 1st time 'offender' here... Being inspired by Linus different builds, and a long time wish to build a new rig - i have come up with a fairly high end system, which I hope will be suited for the needs in the topic-tags... 1. Budget & Location Budget is around 20.000 DKK (as in DANISH) ~ 2.700€ ~ 3500USD (5.75DKK to 1US $) As you have figured out, I live in Denmark. 2. Aim To replace my old worn out rig, originally assembled in 2007, revitalized in 2011 with 128GB SSD and 4 more gigs of ram - maxing out the ram of the motherboard. This has prolonged it's life, but now has come to the end of the road and is getting ready for a nice retracted life as.....junk:) My primary goal with the rig is Photo and video editing, (Premiere PRO, After Effects, Photoshop) and 3D rendering (3DS Max) with an occasional jump into WoW or SWTOR, StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 - not the dedicated heavy hitters on GFX-requirements, but still 3. Monitors Currently equipped with a HP 30" 2560x1600 and a tiny Fujitsu 22" (1680x10....something) - Later upgrading to add 1 or 2 new 27" displays (and removing the 22", Thus ending up with 3 monitors: 1x30" and 2x27" 4. Peripherals SSD : Intel 530 128 GB (OS only) - this is a keeper HDD : 3 1TB WD Black Harddrives and 1 2TB WD Black Harddrive - all for keeps Keyboard : Logitech G15 - I know, it's an ancient gaming keyboard, but it's got a lot of extra functionkeys on the side..and a monochrome display:D Mouse : Logitech MX Revolution - that's a keeper - it's old, but it kindda fits snug into my hand (Planning to later add a Wacom Intous Pro Large or an Wacom Cintiq22HD) 5. Why are you upgrading? Well....why not ...no, I am upgraing because I can no longer spend more time waiting than working...it's as simple as that... ...and My hearing is getting imparied by the sound of a jetliner taking off everytime my PC gets hit by 220V DC:) (...at least I thinks it's DC....and not AC....) And just to make certain - this is for recreational purposed only!!! - I have different PC for Work, which is mainly Databases and System/Software Development. So, Can you guys set me straight - HOW much juice is this rig going to require for a stable, low-noise operation with the occasionally boost of a 3d movie rendering....
