Hello everyone, I'm Ivan. A friend of mine give to me her MacBook Air in order to repair it because all of a sudden it become extremely slow and sluggish. Mac OS struggles to arrive to the login page. Installing (very slowly) Windows 11 on it, I saw that the CPU is capped to 0,49 GHz and doesn't go up, even under stress. Apple Diagnostics says that everything is fine. What should I do? Battery is fine, the SSD has been changed a week ago thinking that it could be the issue. Thanks to everyone who will help me!

I scored (or so I think) a base model M3 Pro 14" MBP for $1800 on a recent sale at Best Buy. I would prefer to find something cheaper. I'm considering a refurbished M2 Pro instead that I've found for $1600 on Apple's website. I don't know if I'd be missing out on features though. I tried so many different Windows laptops, but none fit the bill with build quality, speakers, screen, and overall non-gameriness. I prefer glossy screens over matte screens ideally OLED or Mini LED, and of course 120hz+ is a preferred option. I can find plenty of performant options from the Windows side but most fall short especially with speakers. In an ideal world, I'd love to occasionally pick up an eSports title like Rocket League and play on my 3440x1440 175hz OLED, but it seems thats wishful thinking. I've kind of given up the idea of gaming just because the MacBook Pro M2/M3 Pro are such compelling options. Also, why does no one offer a haptic trackpad in 2024? Diveboard trackpads are so BAD. I would really love some recommendations of video editing laptops around the $1600 mark that might be able to game. The feel of the latop is very important to me. Windows is fine I'm just very in the Apple ecosystem. Thanks!

Hello there, I am looking for a video editing software other than Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Are there any other programs that I can use?

A friend called me to help him with his MacBook Retina 2013 13" because he slept with it a week ago and stopped working. So I tried to fix it the best I can but still no luck and I'm trying to see if any of you can help. I first checked the screen because I thought that the LCD was maybe cracked, but I didn't see anything. So I tried pretty much everything else Force the shutdown, resetting both the SMC and the PRAM/NVRAM, let it charge overnight and try resetting again. When I try to turn it on, no chimes but the caps lock key lights up when pressed. I tried to see if it'd display anything on my external monitor but no luck. I decided to disassemble it to look and see if there was any sign of damage on the motherboard, nothing looks almost pristine. Unplugged the battery overnight and tried all the steps again. I tried to turn it on whilst the battery was unplugged still no response except for the cpu fan turning and the caps lock lighting up. I've ran out of idea and I've never fixed a Mac before. As far as I can tell it's either the screen that's broken (most likely) or an issue with the motherboard (the fact that it doesn't chime or display on my monitor scares me a bit) *Edit : My friend just told me that before the laptop turned on in safe mode so it might also be the hard drive that is dead? I don't know how a Mac proceeds if it doesn't have an OS available But I'd like to be sure before buying a replacement LCD that still cost a fair bit. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

Hi, yesterday I bought a brand new MacBook Pro from Apple. I did a clean set up from absolute zero and in Hungarian. Seemingly everything went just fine, texts shows up in Hungarian, but as I said it in the title, some notification, like the software update and the display settings, show up in Chinese (it might be another east-asian language, I'm sorry). I'll attack a picture, sorry for the bad quality. Could someone help me out with this one? I have never a mac before, I have no idea what to do. So far I have tried to restart the laptop and tried changing the system language to English and then change it back to Hungarian.

Hey! I'm a student and I'm trying to ditch my Thinkpad T480. It's not that I hate it, it's an amazing machine. However, it's not quite doing what I need it to. It's 8th gen i7 and now primitive IPS display struggle as soon as I start anything that begins with "Adobe" and I kill my battery in a day without issue (new batteries, cycle count on both <90). In Windows I use 3 desktops. One for school which contains about 25 chrome tabs, one for work which has Slack and 10 Firefox tabs, and one for personal. In the personal desktop, I normally just have Firefox, Signal, and Spotify open, but its not infrequent that I whip out Illustrator, Photoshop, FL studio, Visual Studio, CLion, RekordBox, or even Premiere Pro. As you can imagine, this doesn't go so well and my battery life seems to reduce to 25 minutes. I decided, even as an engineering student, that I will need to buy a MacBook. Once I start doing engineering stuff for school in a few years I'll have to buy a windows workstation, but for now it's gonna be Mac. For the first time ever. I'm torn between the 13" M2 Air (512, 16gb), a refurbished 14" mbp (m2), and a refurbished 14" m1 pro. What's the best move? Battery life is important, but so is the ability to run photoshop and illustrator. Portability wise, any of these would work. My bag is already heavy enough. I get the apple education discount, and I also work at best buy, which means the Geek squad refurbished m1 would come to $890 pre tax. That means, unless I wanna spend $2,000 for the m2 mbp I would be deciding between the air and the pro, but at that price difference the air is actually more expensive. Is that m1 pro mbp better than an m2 mba? I'm guessing fans and battery life would play a big difference there but I'm not sure how big. If I have the money, I'll get the m2 pro, but otherwise what do you all think is the best move? Thanks!

I am a fullstack developer, and I am in the market for a new macbook. I am not going to be able to work full time for the next couple years so I don't want to spend the full price for the top spec new ones. My budget is 2200$ USD, though the less I spend the better. (the prices are the ones available to me including taxes)

I live in Sweden close to an IKEA and need to buy a bunch of USB-C to USB-C cables that will only be used for charging. However, they need to be able to deliver around 35 W (Watts) to iPad and MacBook Air devices. I found SITTBRUNN USB-C till USB-C and LILLHULT USB-C till USB-C on IKEAs website. How much W do these deliver?

Hi! First post so apologise if I'm posting this in the wrong place but here we go: I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 with 8 GB RAM and essentially it's slowing down to the point it's sometimes unusable, especially since I am studying electrical engineering and it plain struggles. I probably should get a replacement but I already have a fully capable PC recently built and don't wanna shell too much on another device which would most likely be only used in at university, because most things I can just use my PC for. I tried the whole remote desktop thing but I don't wanna keep my whole PC on all the time and wake on Lan doesn't consistently work. I could go for a refurbished or cheap new, and no idea if it should be windows or mac, as I like having a mac just in case i need to do mac stuff and I have an iPad so some ecosystem stuff is nice. Ideally, I just want something of good value that will last a bit. Would appreciate any opinions!

Hi all, I’ve done a reset on the laptop since it wasn’t booting up. After that I got the low battery screen, but with the laptop plugged in for over 4 hours I still get the low batterij screen and it doesn’t boot up. I’m using the poweradapter that came with the laptop. I’m thinking in the direction of a broken battery, but maybe someone else has an idea? The reset I did: Press and hold Shift, Control, and Option on the left side of the keyboard. At the same time, press the power button. Hold for 10 seconds. Release the keys and then turn on your Mac

I am thinking of buying a Macbook Air M2 base model. I am not a huge multitasker and usually close all applications which are not currently in use and just reopen them later and i prefer to do it this way. I want to play Minecraft occasionally on high settings and a render distance of 12. I also want to use medium quality shaders. Is 8gb ram enough to maintain constant 60fps or will it start feeding into swap?

I have a 15 inch 2009 Macbook Pro A1211 32 bit with no operating system and I want to know what i could install. I have had a lot of trouble with linux because of some sort of graphics card issue. I have tried Ubuntu and Lubuntu. Any ideas on what to install? I want a light operating system mostly for using the internet. my MacBook M1 Pro 2021 was working completely fine this morning. Then eight hours later, when I opened it back up, it was just a black screen. Now, when I turned it off and turned it on... it just boots up with the Apple logo and nothing else shows.

So I got accepted into the engineering school of my dreams recently and now that that process is over, my next question is what do I do about a computer? I plan to bring my Windows desktop (i512400f/16gb@3200/3070ti 8gb/2tb nvme SSD) for gaming (and am open to using it for CAD and such (we use Solidworks and MatLab at this school) if I don't wanna use the computer labs) but what I am stuck on is for a laptop. Personally speaking, I hate Windows on a laptop. I can live with it on a desktop but Windows laptops (I've used 7/10/11) have never worked out for me for a variety of reasons, so I much prefer MacBooks even with their downsides. I am aware that I won't be able to run my software natively (though a VM could work) and think between my desktop and the school labs I will be fine. I am thinking about a 15inch air (24gb/1-2tb) in partnership with my Windows desktop, but am curious what other people think about it. If I went with Windows I would probably go XPs 15 or an HP Spectre (and maybe dual boot Linux on there). What do you guys think? Any specific recommendations?

14” M2 Macbook pro - better CPU or more RAM?
Szmorox posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi After 7 years, I’ve decided to upgrade my old HP laptop to a new 14” M2 Macbook Pro. I am planning on using it for programming/coding university, and for my side work. I work with professional sports team where I record the training, analyse the athletes’ technic and movement, and later I edit those videos together so they can view them and possibly improve. So my question is, Would I be better of with a 1TB, 32GB of RAM, base M2 Pro chip (10 CPU cores, 16 GPU cores) Macbook Pro, or should I get a Macbook with 1TB, 16GB of RAM, (one tier better) M2 Pro (12 CPU cores, 19 GPU cores)? There is only a ~$50 difference between the two configurations. I am on keeping it for a long time, just like I did with my old laptop. Thank you for helping me out.- 10 replies

My 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro (work laptop) and my ThinkPad X1 Yoga (personal Linux laptop) are plugged into a Pluggable Thunderbolt 4 dock. My ASUS TUF VG27AQ1A 1440p monitor flickers constantly when I bump up the refresh rate to any value over 60Hz. I used to plug it into a MSI Optix MAG342CQR (144Hz 1440p ultra-wide) in 1440p @ 100Hz, which worked flawlessly (both work and personal). I have a Steam Deck plugged in via the official Steam Deck dock and it can handle 100Hz PERFECTLY. Only reason why its not more is because of the HDMI switch. Troubleshooting: I made sure to disable variable refresh rate Bypassed my HDMI switch and plugged it directly to the monitor Swapped HDMI cables Any ideas as to why it does this, and what else I can do? It makes no sense that the one with more pixels was more stable.

My keyboard and mouse is plugged into 2 USB hubs: USB 3.0 switch that's plugged to... HDMI KVM switch (with USB 2.0) My 2015 Macbook Pro has a separate USB hub for itself (not willing to shell out for a Thunderbolt 2 hub). The only time it wakes up is if I plug the USB from the KVM switch to the Macbook Pro directly. Doesn't seem to work when I plug it in directly to the switch. Any ideas why that's the case, and if there's a way to fix it? Main reason why I have a dedicated switch is because my work M1 Max Macbook Pro doesn't work with my KVM switch's USB 2.0 and I'm very lazy (and found USB 3.0 switch on a deal), and my PC as it's not plugged to the KVM switch, but directly to the monitor via DisplayPort.

So I realize that the new macOS was announced over 2 months ago but I feel the need to still write this... I feel we need to recognize the 2015-2017 12-inch MacBook as the laptop that paved the way for future Apple M series laptops. This MacBook model was and still is one of the thinnest and lightest models Apple ever made. While most would call me crazy the butterfly keyboard (Which was introduced with this laptop in 2015) is still a very nice keyboard especially if you don't like a lot of travel (and assuming yours didn't break). The best way I can describe it is like clicky buttons. The 12-inch MacBook also had a beautiful 1440p retina display which still looks great to this day (Compared to my friend's school Chromebooks this baby rocks!). Most judged this machine for its poor performance and terrible butterfly keyboard. Honestly, I think this laptop was ahead of its time in terms of performance. Most had low-end Intel M-Series Processors and the high-end ones had Intel i5 and i7 processors. The 12-inch MacBook has no fan meaning that a non-optimized x86 Intel chip would run very hot and thermal throttle. Another thing people didn't like was the port selection. This machine had one and yes ONLY one USB-C port (Non-Thunderbolt capable) and one headphone jack. While some people didn't like this at the time, this is how most laptops are nowadays with a limited port selection and you usually need to carry around a dongle. But considering these things I still look back at this laptop as ahead of its time. While the butterfly keyboard didn't work out in the end, it still was an interesting design that allowed laptops to get thinner. If this laptop had received the M1 or M2 chip the performance would have been way better I think. And while in 2015 one Type-C port was unacceptable on a laptop, today it's not surprising to see a laptop with only a couple of ports. The last version of this Macbook (That being the 2017 one...) is not going to be supported in macOS Sonoma. I really wish Apple would bring back this design with something like an M1. But they won't since the 13-inch MacBook AIR now has the M1/M2 chips and took a lot of the good from this machine and fixed all the issues so really the new 13-inch MacBook AIR is the new 12-inch MacBook. For everyone wondering yes I am writing this on my 2017 12-inch MacBook with i5 processor (So yea I might be biased). Thank You for reading this and I hope everyone will remember the 2015-2017 12-inch MacBook.

Hello, I am planning to get a new laptop for web development work. I’ve been a Windows laptop user for all my life but I want to dip my foot into Apple laptop and see what’s up. I’ve seen reviews and just the battery life alone intrigues me. I have a budget around $1800-$1950(USD). Here’s some context, where I am situated these are some of the options that I am wanting to get. These are all brand new prices Macbook Pro 14” M1 Pro base model = 1750$ Macbook Pro 14” M1 Pro (10c-16c, 1TB SSD, 16gb RAM) = 1820$ Macbook Pro 14” M2 Pro base model = 1920$ Personally I would love to get the upgraded M1 Pro with 1TB of storage. The SSD of both base and updated model is faster than the M2 by quite a lot and with the bigger capacity I can use the device for longer without having to store data outside via external means. However, I am not sure how that battery would hold up even though it is brand new from 2021. Is the battery degrade overtime inside the sealed box? I am curious to know how other people’s 2021 Macbook Pro 14” are holding up, especially the battery. What do you think of those 3 options? Which one should I get? Thanks in advance and have a great day!

Hi everyone, just wanted to ask as my work might be trialing a Bring-Your-Own-Device policy for Macbooks where they will pay us £50 a month for 1 year to cover depreciation/maintanence etc. I currently don't own a Mac but if this policy is approved I will be looking to buy one (I have been looking to buy one for quite a while but could never justify the cost) My partner owns a Macbook Air M1 base model and I have been using it occasionally and actually find it a very capable machine (albeit with very little storage) I work in Digital Marketing mainly handling Paid Search (PPC) I work from home most of the time and have to travel to the office about 1-2 times a month. My work generally involves 20+ Chrome tabs (Google Ads, Google Analytics and such), a few spreadsheets, PowerPoints and very rarely editing some promotional material in Photoshop (very rarely and hardly ever demanding as it is normally quite small images used in banner ads and such) I currently use a company laptop (to open VPN restricted reports and such) and my PC (with Intel i5-7500, GTX1070, 16GB RAM) which I use 95% of the time with 2 external monitors (1080p both) as the laptop is a slow Dell with 10th Gen Intel i5 and 8GB RAM. So with all this in mind I have been looking at the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 inch for my current workloads but have also been looking at some older Intel based 13 inch MacBook Pros from 2020 with 10th gen i5 16gb Ram and 512gb SSD which here costs about £790 refurbished in Excellent quality or around £600 in acceptable quality, which will mean I will barely need to use personal funds to cover the MacBook. If I go with the new ones they will be around £1100-1200 for the base model and going up to £1400-1500 if I need more RAM and the 512gb SSD (which M2 ones migth need due to the slow 256gb one) So my question is whether if I go with the Intel based 2020 Macbook pro if it will be enough to handle day-to-day stuff and have 4-5 hours battery at least so I can use it without being plugged in all the time and being able to use my 2 external monitors as well, which the Air and 13inch M2/M1 Macbook pro can't do, so if I go with the new ones I will still probably use my PC and then use the MacBook when not at my desk only. Whereas with the Intel one I will be able to do both but just concerned with its speed in 2023 and battery life. (4-5 hours will be plenty for me, I am hardly away from a socket for more than that) Going Intel will also mean I get to see whether I can cope with MacOS on a daily basis for my work and then in a couple years time sell it if possible and upgrade to the Apple silicon ones and also save some money at the moment. Apologies for the long post, just wanted to list everything.
