I was thinking about getting Manjaro XFCE for my low end laptop to game, but then saw some posts talking about it being buggy?!. I really do not mind how it looks or how easy it is to setup. I kinda like the long setup process anyway. If all I cared about was performance and stability, do you think I should go with Arch instead of Manjaro? If yes, is XFCE perfectly fine or should I mess around with i3 or KDE?

Howdy good sirs! I've been looking at some previous posts on this forum and narrowed my choice down to Kubuntu or Nobara KDE. I am running Intel Integrated Graphics on a laptop with i5 6th generation CPU. I cannot for the life of me decide between these two. What do you all think is the superior Distibution in terms of stability and performance? Please suggest one! I need a third person's outlook on this matter. Thank you in advance.

I'm on Manjaro with kde, and I was really happy to see that 99% of the things I need to daily is available and sometimes easier to do than on windows. League id the only thing that really holds me back, because that is the only game that everyone in my friend group plays, so we play together and have a chat daily there. First, I installed lutris (from pacman not github, not sure if there is a difference) and followed the install guide, with closing the client before logging in and all. Didn't work. Then I found this guide with snap and starting it with --devmode. Didn't work either. After that I said f*ck it and found a guide to compile it myself, as you can guess didn't work either. The thing is it’s the same problem 3 times. The launcher loads in, I log in, there is a screen to choose what riot game to launch, then screen where there is a clip playing and on the bottom left corner a blue start button. I click on the button, the window disappeared except a small piece from the middle (a freeze frame from the video playing, like a centre 9th), then there is nothing happening, I waited 30 mins once, nothing. There is a riot games logo on the right of the system tray, if I click on it the launch window comes back up, the one with the blue start button, however the button is greyed out and can't click on it. I have no idea what to do, not even what troubleshooting steps to make. The only thing that now came to me as I was writing this is I updated the kernel and as I'm on an arch based distro, it might not have been a good idea. I would be glad if someone could confirm a kernel version where league works.

Hello, am using Arch Linux for almost 2 months now with a KDE plasma Desktop environment, and am having several issues with apps that i installed like Steam, free download manager ..., they have a weird appearing once lunched as you can see in the pics down below. i have a 3200x1800 display monitor, so i thought maybe these apps aren't adapted to such a resolution, so i tried downgrading it to Full HD (1920x1080), but that didn't work. i tried installing graphic cards drivers (intel + nvidia), still nothing has changed. am using Xorg as a display manager, with SDDM. am really getting used to KDE, so i want to fix this issues, if not, i hope you can redirect me towards better desktop environments that are easy and efficient for a new Linux user to use.

Just wanted to share my experience with gaming and streaming on Linux Mint before the video of that portion of the challenge is released. I've been using Mint since 2015, so I've dealt with the exact same issues Luke is probably going to run into. I've tried once a year to switch my game stream setup completely to Linux, but I've had a bad experience every time except for when I tried a couple of months ago. I'm actually pretty satisfied with my current setup and am using Mint for my game streams more and more. I had the same issues for years until I just installed KDE and started logging in to a Plasma session whenever I wanna game and/or stream. I recently streamed a game running through Proton that has BattlEye enabled just fine, which is pretty cool. There's some kind of stuttering issue with Mutter/Muffin and the proprietary Nvidia driver. If you're just gaming, it's usually not an issue, but sometimes you definitely will have issues on certain games. It's a huge problem when you try to stream games, though. There's almost always a noticeable stutter. Disabling flipping in the Nvidia driver settings seems to resolve this issue for gaming, but the OBS capture usually misses at least 10% of the frames due to rendering lag. KDE's KWin seems to have resolved these issues for me with both gaming and streaming. These stuttering issues were extremely frustrating to me for several years, and the only way I could resolve them was with KDE. PulseAudio sort of sucks for streaming. idk. Mint doesn't have Jack or Pipewire installed by default, so stream audio just sort of sucks. VST filters don't seem to work well with OBS and PA. There's sometimes some crackling to the audio, too, that I'm assuming is PA's fault. Yes, the audio can be fixed by at least a few different methods, but doing so on the current LTS is just sort of a bad experience. It sort of reminds be of the hassle of having to deal with audio on old DOS games, though it isn't that bad. Pavucontrol, which I believe still isn't installed by default in Mint, is necessary for a stream setup. OBS sometimes just randomly routes audio in incorrect ways, and Pavucontrol is needed whenever that happens. Games open on the wrong monitor in a multi-monitor setup. This seems to be another issue caused by Mutter/Muffin and the proprietary Nvidia driver. You're able to move the game to the other monitor with some games, but not all. KDE also resolved this issue. Alt-tabbing or clicking outside of a full screen game will usually make you have a bad time. Some games end up off-center on the monitor. Mouse input will be messed up and unusable until the game is restarted. Switching to KDE also resolved these issues for me. UVC video devices, like webcams, seem to just freeze up in OBS when trying to change their settings. I have to unplug the device, plug it back in, and then add it back to OBS for it to start working again. I'm actually not sure what causes this, and I'm curious to see if Linus or Luke will have this same issue. Once the settings are set in OBS, they seem to save between reboots which is really nice. Those are the main issues I've had with a Linux Mint + Nvidia proprietary driver game streaming setup. I still use Mint on all of my PCs at home, but almost always in a Plasma session on my game streaming PC. I do prefer Cinnamon, so I use that on PCs that I won't game on. I installed kde-standard on my game stream PC, but I'll probably install kde-plasma-desktop next time since it installs way less stuff I don't need. I honestly don't recommend my setup unless you have a decent amount of experience with desktop Linux. I've done a lot of distro hopping and this is the setup I found works best for me. Kubuntu LTS should get you pretty much the same results. I personally prefer my weird setup, though. On a somewhat unrelated note, I'm really curious if/how Linus is gonna get back the missing OBS features from the main OBS package in Pamac. I used tytan652's package in the AUR the last time I tried Manjaro, and it seemed to get back almost all of the features. There's different ways to work around this issue, though.

LTT. please record vid about it
hacknorris posted a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
okey. im gonna just tell you to record a vid where you : - will find any bug in kde neon (most bugs are in beta developer version) and: - make account on their bug requester with other nick which wouldnt show anything youtube-related (no "linus" or "ltt" ) - normally show this bug. why would you do it? me about a month ago filed first request to them. nothing special i could live with it (installer problems). then i filed second (devlopment-related). and at the end third (settings and themes related). to the now i didnt got any replys to first 2 bugs. third one got marked as duplicate tons of times spamming same way my email. few days after mine last request i got yet other bug (might be just because they got angry that a normal guy, not a star of smth reports too much things or idk): i was deinstalling unused gnome desktop (i just had it for some testing reasons), i left pc for night to complete removal. at morning i just saw empty desktop with 0 apps (literal factory reset, like on android/ios/windows, not linux)... i was (yes not a joke, i was dumb then). kde neon beta-developer. (plasma, system version i already forgot). hope ya'll make similar vid soon. maybe they'll change. and here take these mine requests (for not cheating) : https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?email1=hacknorris123456789%40gmail.com&emailassigned_to1=1&emailreporter1=1&emailtype1=exact&field0-0-0=bug_status&field0-0-1=reporter&list_id=1959519&type0-0-0=notequals&type0-0-1=equals&value0-0-0=UNCONFIRMED&value0-0-1=hacknorris123456789%40gmail.com thanks for reading. i also left you a comment under first part of linux on yt ;) -
Hi, So I recently decided to switch to linux for my main OS and I have been having some problems with my nic. So my setup is pretty straight foward I have two 2.5Gb/s nics one in my pc and one in my server that are both directly connected to one another. My problem is that I am not able to get the speed that is advertized on linux. I am on Kubuntu 21.04 btw. I never had this problem on windows. I have the r8125 driver installed and loaded but even then It dosnt work. When doing "ehtool enp9s0" these are the results I get. Settings for enp9s0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full 2500baseT/Full Supported pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Supported FEC modes: Not reported Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised FEC modes: Not reported Link partner advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full 2500baseT/Full Link partner advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only Link partner advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Link partner advertised FEC modes: Not reported Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Auto-negotiation: on Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 0 Transceiver: internal MDI-X: Unknown Supports Wake-on: pumbg Wake-on: g Current message level: 0x00000033 (51) drv probe ifdown ifup Link detected: yes So it is supported but the speed is stuck at 100Mb/s for some reason. Any ideas would be greatly apreciated since I didnt buy both cards wanting them to be as slow as in integrated eth port lol. They work perfectly fine under windows and have a problem ONLY when im on booted in kubuntu on my main pc.

I am running regular Ubuntu on my laptop and installed kde plasma and lightdm on top of the default gnome/unity/whatever ubuntu's default is. Lightdm and sudo will trigger the webcam for howdy and will work but lock screen for plasma will not trigger. Instead I need to enter my password every time. I have tried googling around and adding some conf files and changing the configuration for plasma, but nothing seems to work. Has anyone gotten this to work?

Sorry in advance for lack of knowledge. I am new to Linux So I was thinking about creating a Linux distro the other day for learning linux and maybe make it public so here are some questions I have before starting the project Where are the system apps stored in the Linux iso ? Where is the text stored for the os version and setup text in the iso ? Is there a way to disable the start button and permanently pin some apps And some open source icon packs And skins for the os (If they match It would be great) And a way to implement them through the iso I would be really grateful if someone answers my questions

Hello, I noticed that when I am in KDE Manjaro (live disk) , the minumum screen brightness is much lower than that of Windows with its updated graphics driver. I was wondering if there is any way to remedy that as because a lower min screen brightness is very useful at night. Does anyone know anything about this? System: Asus Zenbook UX430UAR. Thanks in advance for your help.

I read that you cannot scale a single display when using x11 like I have to because I use nvidia. But I find that odd because cinnamon, which also uses x11 can scale both monitors separately from one another just fine and it also uses x11. Any ideas on how to get around this kde limitation? The nvidia settings are no help either, because they are extra limited on fedora for some reason, compared to ubuntu that is. Any ideas on how to get around this issue?

Hi there! So yesterday I installed Arch Linux with KDE on an old computer and also in a virtual machine (VirtualBox). Both installations seem to work fine and I can use them regularly. But there was one issue (on both installations): Many websites won't load. I can't even ping them. Websites like Youtube, Google, etc. work fine. But other ones like Reddit, Twitter, Github are just unable to load. Because of that I also can't install specific packages and apps. What should I do to fix the issue? Thanks in advance.

I am a 3D hobbyist and more or less everyday user and for my needs, which do you think would be better - Manjaro or Neon? I'm talking about performance, graphics drivers, and the like. Second thing is that I've heard Manjaro breaks at one point, as if it is a certainty. Considering the fact that I'm a noob, how recommendable would Manjaro be and is it true that it will break? And, do you have the option of not updating? P.S. I know a little about Timeshift, but I'm not too keen on that if using Manjaro necessitates Timeshift.

I installed KDE on my elementary OS machine using command line sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop It prompted me to choose between the desktop environment. After I chose SDDM and rebooted it is stuck at the elementary os logo screen and refuses to boot into kde. I thought it was grabbing some configuration files so I left it like that overnight but it was still stuck at that screen when i checked today morning. is there a way for me to fix this? like choose the DE before it boots and change it to lightdm?

Hello everyone, I had a problem in the last couple of days with my plasma installation after deleting /usr/lib/qt/qml by mistake while trying to resolve some conflicts. Since I didn't find any useful information on how to generate a new qml folder with all the right files in it I decided I'd post my solution here so anyone with a similar problem can find it faster than I did. The whole idea is to reinstall qt5 and plasma while nuking all qml configuration files, so that when you reinstall everything a new copy of all required files is created. This will change some of your desktop theming and uninstall some programs such as dolphin, however in my experience keyboard shortcut settings and program specific settings will not be touched. Mostly the biggest hassle will be reinstalling any themes you may have downloaded from the AUR. Unfortunately simply reinstalling plasma and qt5 isn't enough as it will not replace existing qml files, therefore the entire stack needs to be purged. To uninstall qt5 and plasma and purge all corrupted settings, you'll need to run pacman -Rcns plasma qt5 (note that this is for arch linux specifically, if you're running a debian or rhel based distribution you'll have to research how to do this with your distro's package manager), then reinstall both and any programs it may have removed with them (dolphin, okular, konsole, mostly anything from the kde suite). Before you do this make sure you have some terminal emulator that does not depend on the kde stack, since konsole will also be removed and reinstalling everything might become more of a hassle if you're stuck without a terminal and have to use a separate tty (especially if you run on wifi). I hope this was useful for someone.

So Kubuntu is not storing WiFi passwords at all. I have no idea why! Some sites say to enable the wallet. Others say to change the network manager (which doesn't seem to be on my Linux distro) and it's just confusing the shit out of me. Can someone please help, I'm getting irritated by Linux and KDE. The laptop specs are as followed: Core i5-2450M Intel HD Graphics 3000 1 TB WD Blue HDD 6GB of RAM (5.9 Available) Intel Celeron WiFi card Theirs only one partition on the HDD and that's the Kubuntu partition. PS: I used to have Ubuntu, I accidentally killed it, then I installed KDE Neon, but it was acting weird so now I'm trying Kubuntu.

Whenever I'm moving a file or copying a file to my flash drive that uses NTFS it always takes a long time like hours. And whenever it's done and I put it in my Windows computer and run check disk it always spits out a whole bunch of connecting error in index for file and recovering orphaned file. Can someone help or explain why this is happening?

So I've tried again to try and re-install Linux and get Windows and Linux to live in harmony. At least I'm trying, but Linux just doesn't want to boot to the installer. If I make a bootable Windows installer the computer is able to boot to that just fine, but when it's Linux, well. The screen prints things out normally at first but then quickly snowballs in an instant. The screen starts to glitch out and words get so scrambled that it's unreadable and I've done everything from taking the drive that Window's is installed on out, to turning off safe boot. Any advice/help on this. I'm not that savvy with Linux yet.

So, here is the deal: I have both KDE plasma, LXDE and Gnome installed on my linux machine. I don't use Gnome regularly, but I have it as a fallback. I also have LXDE for when I use VNC remotely. Either way, recently I have been getting gnome/lxde (i can't be sure which style this is) notification messages instead of the typical KDE notification popup at the bottom of the screen. Here is an example of what I'm getting. Long story short, How can I get back to KDE style notifications? Thanks!

This topic is kinda related - It was suggested that I could try using Manjaro and decided to give it a go and downloaded the KDE plasma version. I installed it on a totally separate drive to PopOs, next to a WIn10 partition. Once installed, I then followed the instructions on the Arch site to get the AMD drivers installed, update mesa and try to get Vulkan running. I installed all these files from the arch site and then the Linux core via the instructions. When It asked me to "Specify the correct module order" I remembered Nayr438's comments and ran the " sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf " commands and inserted data & saved and then the " sudo nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf ". In here there were no modules set, so I added amdgpu & Radeon, saved and exited. When I ran " sudo mkinitcpio -p linux54 " The process started but advised there were errors to do with the amdgpu & radeon modules. I guess I did something wrong ? I rebooted and and prayed Vulkan might run, loaded steam and of course it wouldnt So, I headed into the package manager ( think its called that ) and proceeded to install everything that I thought might have something to do with vulkan and amd drivers ... Yes I cried when I saw the amdgpu experimental install ? I thought it would be best just to stick with the normal amd drivers for the mo and installed all of these - I rebooted and it was still the same I looked on some other sites for pointers but just became a bit lost again to be honest and then went into random install anything mad man mode before I really cocked it up ? I did manage to take these SS tho, so hopefully they are helpful - I did however manage to update the manjaro grub so that I had the boot choice option pop up instead of it just loading into Win10 straight away( they share the same drive ), so not a complete waste of time After all that .... I calmed down and rebooted, Vulkan was still the same, but I finally found out how to check what driver was loading and could see that it was the Radeon one So I headed back into the package manager and decided to install the amdgpu-experimental package ... when this ran all these windows came up ( im screenshotting everything by now btw ) and then I got these error messages .. I Kinda determined that this ment it didn't work, but thought I better give it a reboot just in case. Thats when I received that Horrible black screen of nothing when I rebooted back into Manjaro .... It just would not load I still had PopOs & Win10 tho and proceeded to try and boot Pop ... This ended in a grey screen, I wouldn't let me log in or get into the Alt+F2 or F3 thing either. Most My files were on Pop so, I tried to do a refresh install and whereas it brought up the login screen this time, it would not let me log in and ended up in a cycle of accept and reset login screen every time I entered my psw ? I had to do a fresh re-install for the 10th time in the end ? (I got my copy of home directory 1st tho using the live usb - phew) I also did try using the recovery drives for both Os`s, but apart from fixing the Grub and packages, im a bit lost as what to look for when editing the grub ... I see the word splash, but have no idea what to type or remove or even how to save it afterwards still learning. Win10 btw somehow survived all this and still works ... the irony ugh. If you've made it this far well done you must either really like solving issues or fixing Linux. I have a few questions moving forwards .. 1 - How did Installing a graphic driver on one system bork both Os's into not being able to boot? I made sure they both had their own swap partitions and they were on separate drives too? 2 - Two different Os's have both given me the black screen of doom upon boot, PopOs Gnome & Manjaro KDE. Am I doing the correct things to ensure im giving it the best chance to work? As far as im aware the only things I need to update as the mesa drivers and setup dxvk/d9vk, install the amdgpu drivers and set a few grub/kernel commands and it should work. Am I missing anything else I need to install? 3 - Can someone link a video of really basic guide on how to edit the grub thing during boot or via a live usb properly .... I really should be learning how to do this so that I dont have to keep on re-installing my Os, but the guides Ive found tend to over confuse the explanation and I get lost again Thx for reading again if u made it this far & soz for the mass of pictures, im dyslexic and pics inform a lot better imo

i recently (today) switched to kde neon 5.19 on my laptop after being a long-time windows user and have no idea what i'm doing a lot of the time, so i have some questions on how to do stuff: is there a way to change system sounds? i plugged a secondary monitor into my laptop via hdmi and it decided to rescale everything to be super zoomed in. is there a way to fix that? (i attached a screenshot of it, also i messed around a bit with the themes and managed to change it to something i like, as well as changing the launcher menu to something a bit more familiar, so it's not barebones kde) the theme i chose has a screenshot preview that looks like macos, but when i installed it, all that changed was the icons, the window management, etc, is that supposed to happen, or should it have changed? i've been trying to install java to run jar files, but i haven't been successful yet, as the java -version command shows info for openjdk rather than java 1.8.0_261. is there a guide i can use? (originally i was using the guide on the java website, then found a guide on the ubuntu website) is there a way to get my biometric authentication (built-in fingerprint sensor and lenovo webcam with ir sensors) and touchscreen working? the reason i switched was because i had performance issues in windows (15-50% cpu usage from the windows activation service most of the time) and getting kicked out of ms teams calls randomly due to crashes from high resource usage, and have been pretty happy since switching, aside from the lack of touchscreen support with windows-only drivers on lenovo's website, and the weird scaling issues after plugging in a secondary display. edit: my battery menu seems to be confused, when i plug my laptop in, it says it's discharging, and when i unplug it, it makes a noise and says it's charging. for clarification, here's a video of me attempting the java install:
