Start search uses Windows Search which uses Indexing Service. By default, MS Indexes %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - all well and good HOWEVER, by default, MS DOES NOT index %appdata% -- and in there is %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - and if you check Indexing Options, you will find that no, MS does NOT include that specific directory. I've sent feedback using Feedback Hub on this, but for now, any items in Users' Start Menu folder and not the %programdata% Start Menu folder will cause delays, and it appears Start Menu will wait for those results, so even if your item is in %programdata%, your result will be delayed. NOTE you cannot enable indexing of other users' Start Menu locations unless you FIRST access their profile folder in Explorer to get access (their folders will show as not existing in the Indexing Options dialog as that dialog does not display folders the user does not currently have access to). ALSO, it will take a while for Indexing to update and include results from the users' Start Menu folder, so either find a way to force immediate Indexing, or let the computer idle for a half hour on AC power when testing this. In summary, to fix this, find Indexing Options in Start, hit Modify, browse to the \Users\{username}\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu folder and hit its checkbox, then hit OK, then OK. To fix this for other users on your system, Open Explorer, browse to and select their \Users\{username} folder, click to get access, then repeat the above process to enable Indexing. Then wait for Indexing to update the location(s).

Good day all. Hope I place the post where it belongs. We are a small business hoping to get rid of paper. We have tons of invoices, receipts, BOLs and other documents. I tried searching online but I just got "standard" looking scanners. I wanted help into choosing an scanner that will help us in our goal of going digital; and not losing more invoices (warranties) Scanner requirements: Scan bulk quantities of documents Produce searchable PDF (indexing) Be able to place on tray different paper sizes (may be) Network capable (maybe wireless) Efficiency or speed should not be an issue, but something reliable regarding stuck papers. When I type the name of some document into Windows Search it does not find anything. I have the whole disk indexed. The strange thing is that while windows is indexing (I tried to rebuild the index) it found everything but when it has finnished it does not find anything. (Sorry for my english :)) Thanks

Hello all, I'm having some concerns about the indexing of files on Windows10 running on SSD. As you guys know, disabling indexing is strongly advised on SSDs since a lot of write operations reduce the SSD lifespan (among other optimizations that Windows can handle). The problem is that the search is disabled on mail items (Outlook), file items, etc... (The SSD is the only storage available, no other drives). The always given answer is "No need for you to enable indexing on your C:, your SSD is already fast enough". But fast or not, if Windows doesn't know where to find your files (without indexing), the searches are very poor, and seriously behind any searching experience on Windows 7 with indexing enabled. Did you guys came across a solution for this ? I encountered this problem at home, but at work too : workstations are migrated to Windows10, and I think they disabled Indexing in Group Policies, the OS being mostly upgraded on SSD laptops. When searching for files on the F and L drives, it works properly and I am given a result. However, when I search on the C drive, it returns no results, ever. So I checked my indexing settings, made sure the C drive was selected and rebuilt the index. Still, searches turned no results. I did this multiple times. I also tried restarting the Windows Search service and changing policies in the Group Policy editor to no avail. Then I noticed something when deselecting the C drive in the indexing menu: When the C drive is deselected in the upper menu ("Change selected locations") the F drive disappears from the lower menu ("Summary of selected locations") even though the F drive is still selected in the upper menu. Also, when the F drive is deselected in the upper menu but C is selected, F still appears in the lower menu. When both C and F are deselected, F doesn't appear in the lower menu. It seems like drives C and F are connected somehow. I still have yet to find a way to index on my C drive. Example of when C is deselected but then F disappears. Example of when F is deselected but it still appears in the lower menu. And an example of when both drives are deselected, F disappears.

So im using an i5 - 6th gen u processor laptop with just a 1tb HDD inside. NO SSD Before going in the topic i know my system sucks (gonna buy a new one) until then cant buy an ssd because for some reason they're crazy expensive in India. side note: should i wait for zen 3 mobile cpus and nvidia 3000 series mobile chips for laptops? if yes any idea till when? So i recently saw somewhere that disabling the windows search indexing helps increase the performance of the disk here are my doubts. 1. Does it actually help in daily use? 2. Difference in indexing in hdd/ssd? 2. What will be the impact? 3. not a big user of search but what if i remove that and replace it with everything? 4. For some reason, whenever I try to access certain files it keeps asking me to confirm admin permission or something, even though it is files one normally should be able to access. And an even bigger problem is, the windows search is not working. At all. It doesn't find a single file. I recently did a clean install of my system. Before, I had my W7 on a HDD but now I installed W10 on an SSD. When I first made my account on W10, I believe everything was working fine. Then I decided to format the HDD with W7 on it to use as storage. It works just fine.. however, after I did that, I've been running into these really weird issues with permissions mentioned above, an I'm not sure whether it is because of what I did. Anyway, I did the sfc scan, it found a problem but could not fix it. I also did the Search and Indexing troubleshooting and got "Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories" Could not fix issue. I tried to do an index rebuild, but nothing, and Microsoft told me to run DISM... but no luck there either. So I went to my folders and took at look at the permissions for a random folder... and indeed: Neither system or admins have permission to the program files folder. And even worse is, I tried to change the permissions but everything was grayed out and it wouldn't let me.. even though I am admin. And even if it would let me change the permissions... This isn't just one folder we're talking about. It's like, everything. All files on both C (system) and D (storage) drive. What do I do?

Hi, I recently installed a new hard drive in my system and everything was going fine. The problem was when Windows Search and Indexing decided to stop working. (I have Windows 10 Pro 64bit) I moved the indexing cache over to my HDD which had nothing installed on it and somehow the SearchIndexing files got deleted on it. Whenever I go into services.msc and go to Windows Search, it says the path is not found when I try to start it. The path is called C:\Windows\system32\SearchIndex.exe/Embedded. When I try to turn on the indexing in control panel, the rebuild button does not do anything. Everything is grayed out and pressing rebuild does not do anything. I have restarted my computer, restored it but nothing has helped. I actually use the Windows Search and indexing quite often so someone please help with this problem!!!!!!!

Intro Hello, I realize this might be a strange thread to be on the LTT forums, but it's tech related and I need help. So I thought it would be worth-while for our household as well as others who want a similar solution to ask here. The Problem I'm mainly helping out my father who has literally tens of cubic feet of paper that needs to be better organized. Hopefuly the solution will also help the rest of the family to be better organized when it comes to paperless document organization as well. The trick is that we already have a printer that has a quality document scanner that is relatively quick and we don't want to invest in another scanner with proprietary hardware/software (i.e. Neat Scanner). The workflow When it comes to high-efficiency paper scanning and organization using a DMS (Document Management System) there are a few components that need to be considered and setup before scanning. A backup system like a NAS The scanner: Does it scan both sides quickly? Does it make corrections like straightening out pages on the fly? A paper shredder The DMS Where I need help I have a temporary backup solution which I hope to improve upon by investing in a Synology DiskStation NAS with some Seagate NAS drives. I have a scanner that scans both sides relatively quickly although it doesn't automatically make corrections. I have a great paper shredder. The part I'm having the hardest time finding is a relatively cheap, home-use Document Management System. Something that automatically take the scanned documents and use OCR, index, label, and organize the documents so that they could be searched and found quickly and easily. DMS It would be great if the DMS could: Save the final, indexed documents in PDF form for compatibility. Work with MS Office programs (OneNote) Something like eFileCabinet except without the cloud stuff, the price tag, and all the extra features. While nice, it's business orientated instead of home oriented which makes it way more expensive. I will be paying close attention to this thread and hopefully we can make a super-cool paperless scanning and organizing workflow. Don't be shy. Even if you don't know anything about DMS systems I'm sure you guys will have some other suggestions, which I'm open to.

Hi, on my computer, indexing won't turn on no matter what I do. Using CMD, regedit, rebooting, restoring, nothing works. I don't know what is happening so can someone have a solution to this proble? I can use windows search but it says indexing is not turned on at the top. Every time I go to the indexing options and click rebuild, nothing happens. I think I do not have the path that it needs but I do not know. Thank you.

Hello. So I upgraded to windows 10 yesterday and everything was going well, I had no issues with drivers or anything else. But today I noticed that apps don't show when I search for them. If I type in groove or edge I get nothing even though it was working perfectly fine yesterday. I started to notice after I installed Office and VS 2015 and couldn't find them by searching. I think this is an indexing problem, since all my searches also show the "We're getting search ready" banner at the top of the search area. Is anyone else experiencing this? If so have is there a fix? Thank you so much in advance

hey, This is really annoying. I cannot, no matter what I try, get my D drive to show up in 'indexing options'. I've tried all the usual stuff like ticking the little box in properties,.. 'show all locations' in indexing,.. rebuilt the index, windows troubleshooting, chkdsk, .. turned on windows-search in services.. lots of googling.. even deleted and replaced System Volume Information, to no avail. My C is there, and any external usb's also show up no problem. Recently my ssd died and so I put an image backup of my os on a C partition on the hard drive drive for a few days. I had to do a reg tweak to change around the drive letters etc. I'm back to a new ssd now and the partition is deleted. Not sure when the problem began but only noticed it yesterday. So in short something is stopping indexing from finding D. Any thoughts?

Just a quick question... Is Caching the same thing as Indexing? From my understanding caching is like indexing but for windows not my browser. Just wondering
