I've gotten a pc recently, and as far as I can tell, it's decent with games. However, I did notice that the cpu is bringing the performance down quite a bit. I've been trying to look for what I should get as an upgrade for it without spending too much money. Currently I have an Intel i5-6500. The motherboard is an Asus H170 PRO GAMING, so the socket is an LGA1151. If, money-wise, it's better to upgrade the motherboard too, I'd be fine hearing about that too, but I'd rather only upgrade the cpu for now. The GPU it has is good enough for me for now, it's an Nvidia GeForce 1050ti. And as for a budget, I don't exactly have one, but I would be fine with seeing multiple options. I'm from the Netherlands, so if it's possible I'd prefer prices in €, as well as not having high shipping costs.

Plz check the below images. Some pins/dot of CPU i5-6500 are more dark than other CPU pins/dots. A)What is the meaning of that and B) how can I fix that. (Toothpaste? is it rust?) Plz help. C) (And why and how could something like this happen?)

Hi, Over 4 years ago I built a PC for a cousin of mine. The budget was kinda so I had to make some sacrifices. Relevant parts are: ASRock H100M-DGS i5-6400 DDR4 GeIL Pristine, 1x8 GB, 2400MHz, CL16 GP48GB2400C16SC Now he asked me to suggest a RAM upgrade and I'm at a bit of loss. The ark.intel page says the processor supports up to DDR4-2133. The motherboard's QVL page only lists DDR4-2133 sticks but it obviously hasn't been updated for quite some time. The first things that comes to mind is 2x8GB sticks but then what? Is there any point in going for higher frequencies? Will it even boot? As I cannot seem to find any reliable sources I would like to ask for Your help in the matter.

I have both a desktop and a laptop with similar specs. Desktop- i5-6500, gtx1050ti, msi h110m grenade, 8gb 2133mhz ram, corsair vs450 psu Laptop - i5-8300H, gtx1050(4gb), 16gb 2400mhz ram I play games like assassins creed odyssey, watchdogs 2 etc. My desktop cpu seems to be too weak to run odyssey at 60fps as frametimes are in the 20-25ms. But while using msi afterburner to check statistics, it is boosting to the all core 100mhz turboboost and is at 95-100% utilisation throughout. But power usage is in the 20-25W range while being a 65W TDP chip. The temps are also really low, i never saw it going above 55°C whatever the load is. The issue then comes to my laptop which overheats near instantly to 95-98°C on the cpu and gpu sits close to 85°C under 90%+ load. The cpu here uses 30+W quite frequently and goes to the 3.9ghz (max all core boost) dropping occasionally to 3.6-3.7 ghz range even at such dangerous temps. I have undervolted the cpu by -0.15V using Intel XTU but i feel thats not doing anything. I have also tried changing the thermal paste, using a laptop coolerpad with fans but no change ever happens. Is there something i can do so that the cpu in the desktop performs better, and the cpu in the laptop to run a bit cooler?

Hi people, nice forum, newbie here. I got some money and I'm planning on finally replacing my very old pentium dual core. I basically need a cpu, mobo and memory and would like to get the best cheap performance/prize items. So I started picking the intel core i5-6500 but I'm kinda lost at choosing a mobo... I want to save some bucks but also don't want to have to replace it the next year or lose performance on my other components. So far i got this https://es.pcpartpicker.com/list/qPDVTH Also a friend is talking about buying 2 4gb instead of 1 8gb. Comments about the monitor are also appreciated :P. The goal would be playing online games (wow, overwatch...) at least mid-high quality. I have an nvidia geforce GTX 650 that it's gonna stay there at least one more year. Also no ssd.

Windows 10 64-bit i5-6500 (Upgrading to 7700k) Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8GB WD Blue 1TB HDD BIOS is before Kaby Lake support Post code: 1 short beep, followed by another 5 short beeps Alright, I finally got my i7-7700k, and I was going to install it. So I pluck it in, and it wont POST. Then I remembered I needed to update my BIOS, so I pluck in my i5-6500 to Q-Flash, but before I get the chance, my friends, POST codes come up. The codes are 1 short beep, followed by another 5 short beeps. At this point I ripped everything out of the case, and I don't know what to do.

So I just built a pc a few days ago, here's the specs: intel core i5-6500 MSI Radeon RX 480 8gb Gaming X 8gb (2X4) RAM I've seen other people play games like battlefield 1 in 1080p and 1440p ultra settings with specs similar to or slightly below mine, but for some reason I can't play well at all at 1080p with lowest settings, barely goes over 30fps. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to improve performance, because I'd like to play at 1080p high. I can play games like Doom 2016 on ultra (whenever it doesn't crash, had to reinstall because of save issues) but that's about it. I can't even play War Thunder on high...it says my specs aren't "high enough," which is bs. Can someone please help me. If I need, should I upgrade to an i5 6600k (my return is still good for two weeks)? Also, it won't let me use AMD Radeon Settings along with the MSI Gaming App. This might be a user error, idk, but all the drivers are updated for everything. Please help. Thanks.

I have a problem with my recent build, it's being bottlenecked. I have a i5-6500, a EVGA 1060 FTW+ (Running at 2038mhz), and 8gb of ram. Me and a kind stranger found out that the reason I was getting lower than expected fps was because of my cpu. It has to be some problem other than the cpu not being powerful enough, a 6500 isn't necessarily the best cpu you can get but it's no joke. Games usually run slower than most benchmarks with the same build as me that I watch. CPU usage is always 100% while gpu is usually 65-90%. I don't believe it's from thermal throttling. Has anyone had(or have) a problem like this? and if so do you know the a solution? The stranger from the earlier thread said to do a fresh version of windows because that helped him with his cpu overusage, but I want that to be a last ditch effort. The only solutions I've seen people saying are to get dual channel ram. Specs---------- Mobo: Asus Z-170a CPU: I5-6500(turbo to 3.4ghz) RAM: Corsair Vengeance Lpx 1x8gb PSU: EVGA 500B GPU: EVGA 1060 FTW+ (Using Nvidias fancy gpu boost, so it runs at 2038mhz). I used a gta benchmark someone did and copied the exact same settings I generally got 10-15fps lower than their test(I recorded hwmonitor because I felt it was more important than the fps) (Sorry for phone recording)

Hi, I'm planning on building a new pc but I'm not sure what cpu to get. I want to be able to run games smooth, since i won't be upgrading in a while. People told me the 6500 is a very good choice ( with the GTX 1060 that im planning to buy ) but I don't want to have the cpu bottlenecking the gpu. I was thinking of getting the 6600 mainly because I can overclock it but I have no ideea if it's worth spending the money just for this feature..i was told it is not worth, even though i have a verry good cooler (deepcool v2 lucifer). What should I do? I'm interested in last gen games running them at max 1080p.

Here in the Uk, we have CEX. its not a bad company with all the deals and such. But would buying computer parts from there be a risk? I've spotted an i5-6500 selling for £130 and its price on amazon is around £185. CEX warranties are quite lengthy, but would you guys says its worth the risk?

In the gpu section of this forum the people there were very helpful and figured out that my terribly low fps was because my cpu wouldn't go above 800 Mhz(should be 3200Mhz). In bios, my ratio is also 8x which explains the low frequency. I've checked overclocking profiles, i reset cmos by taking the battery out of my motherboard (asus strix H270f), i checked power management and made sure it was on high performance. I disabled intel turboboost and that intel step program thing. Attached are some benchmarks from userbenchmark and hwmonitor under firestrike load. any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi Guys, i am from India and i am planning for a new rig with following specs. please pour in your advice. i am not into overclocking that's why i have chosen "non K" version. 1 Processor Intel Core i5 6th Gen 6500 3.2 GHz Processor 2 Motherboard Asus H170-PRO-GAMING 64GB DDR4 Intel Motherboard 3 Ram Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400MHz C16 Memory - Red 4 Hdd Western Digital Blue 1TB SATA Internal Desktop Hard Drive (WD10EZEX) 5 Graphic card Asus ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 Graphic Card 6 PSU Seasonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W Modular Power Supply 7 Cabinet Antec GX505 Window SC Cabinet 8 Cpu cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU Coolers 9 DVD RW LG GH24NSD1 10 SSD 120 gb Samsung EVO

I am now building my 2nd rig after I sold off my LGA1150 components yesterday. Soo looks like the ever-increasing PhP to Dollar rates are affecting component pricing here in our country. Uugh. I found out that a brand new i5-6500 costs as much as a used i5-6600K. I think I can even haggle the 6600K ads to 5-10$ lower than the new i5-6500. Should I go for the 6600K? AFAIK Intel CPUs have 3-years standard warranty so I'm kinda "safe". (Sort of) Issues: 1.) I'm building on an H-board, I am not willing to go for a Z-board as the price difference is insane. 2.) If I do get funds to get a Z-board, I will be building on an teeny weeny SG13. Sooo unless I AIO, I won't be getting decent clocks without the whole system burning. The TL;DR is, is it okay to get a used 6600k over a new 6500 even if I am 100% certain I will not be overclocking the 6600K?

I'm planning on creating my first build and will be ordering the parts on black friday. I was very contempt on buying the i5-6500 because my budget didn't allow for anything higher and the i5-6500 is at a good price. However, the GTX 1060 6Gb that I was planning to buy is no longer shipping to my address (it was $240USD), so instead I'm buying an RX480 8GB. I also decided to purchase my case and monitor second hand (6 months old, looks like they never even used it). The case and monitor purchased brand new would cost around $550, but I bought them for $236. Because of this I've ended up having a bit of money left over and thought about buying a i5-6600k. I'm not sure what motherboard I want to get though, as I could get the MSI Z170 A PRO for $80USD or I could go for the MSI Z170 SLI for $85USD and it would allow me to potentially upgrade to two RX480's in the future. I'm not sure if that the SLI version is missing out on any features that the A PRO has though or if I should even get it. If I do get the 6600k and a Z170 mobo I'll be over my budget, so I really don't want to spend anymore than that. Here are the three builds I'm deciding on. Standard i5-6500 http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/TBnjNN or i5-6600k with SLI http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/ytGVGf or i5-6600k with A Pro http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/HbMmFd

Hello All 1st time poster here. I have a i5 6500 that is starting to slow with some AAA titles like Assassins creed Odyssey and BL3 and other titles. I want to upgrade to a 3700x or a i7 9700k. I live close to a micro center and they have both CPU's for $299 and $30 off a mother board. Let me know what everyone would do. I7 has better gaming but 3700x is better at multi tasking and i don't have to get a cooler. i am a heavy user and like to do many things at once while gaming. I play only at 1080p and just need 60fps. I'm aware my 1060 will hold me back there and plan to upgrade in the future.Check out my build below. Thanks for your help. Hello Guys, I'm looking to overclock my PC even though a little bit to see how much performance more I can get from this hardware. Below you can find the hardware i have: Operating System: Windows Home x64 CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 CPU @ 3.20GHz . With a Hyper 212 EVO for cooling. GPU: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB RAM: 16,0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1064MHz (15-15-15-36) Motherboard: What do you recommend me starting with? i have never done OC on any of my PCs and don't want to break it since is the only one i have, so that's why i came to the LTT forums since i have been following this channel for years now. Thanks a lot in advance Fernando

Hello guys,I need your help. My PC: I5-6500 Gtx 1060 8gb 2133ram I play overwatch on 100+ fps and I have a lot of drops in fights, I know it's because of my CPU's bottleneck ,but I also read that dual channel ram can help with it and will boost my minimum fps. Is it true? Thanks everyone.

Selected parts: parts.jpg Building a gaming rig for a friend of mine. Got a couple of things that still need deciding. We live in Finland, ordering most of the parts from Germany, case from Finland and Win 10 Pro from Kinguin.net. Already have a SSD. - Is 8GB of RAM enough for newest games or should we opt for 16GB already? - Is GA-B150M-D3H a good mobo for this build? Lots of people seem to be recommending MSI B150M-Mortar, but I'm more comfortable with Gigabyte. Is there any difference quality-wise? Both boards pack all the desired functionality. - Case. Any recommendations for the best price/perfomance mATX case, budget 40-100€ on this. Options we've had a look at include Silverstone TJ-08B-E, Cooltek C3 and Fractal 1100. - Kinguin.net. Does it work for OSes? I've bought a couple of games and they worked fine. We are poor college students so we don't really care where did the product key come from as long it's working ^^ E: Yeah, forgot to mention games he's gonna play include CS:GO and BF1 mostly. He's gonna buy a 144 hz 1080p monitor.

I've heard that it is overclockable if you buy a Z170 motherboard. Is that true?

Hi guys! I've got couple questions that's need to be answered before i start my new (and first) PC build. I only use my PC 2-5 hours a day and the budget is limited (as usual), I only play GTA 5 and ordering Battlefield 1.It will be a 1080p, single monitor mid range setup and the games set to medium/ high. I upgraded my old PC with SSD,GPU,PSU to a point where i need the 3 main components to be replaced (CPU+RAM+Mobo). I've decided what will be the most parts but I have some questions left (after searching on the forums and other reviews.) R.C. (Reason of Choice) Case: NZXT S340 - R.C.: The Video Card is 31cm long and i needed a case what fits it and there's no drive cage in the way of the front fans CPU: Intel i5-6400 or Intel i5-6500 - R.C.: I'd like to use DDR4 RAM instead of DDR3 and also they are newer CPUs with better support than I5-4460. (I do not plan on overclocking). RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black CL14 2133Mhz 16GB (Dual channel 2x8 GB) - R.C.: 8 Gigs would be fine but I'm alt+tabbing a lot and checking something on google ( usually with Chrome). Mobo: Asus H170-PRO - R.C.: I do not plan on overclocking thats why not the Z170 and i know it's an expensive motherboard but i wanted something good quality and resistant against electricity fluctuation. CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212X - R.C.: X series has better bearings over the EVO so It lasts longer and has an improved design on the heat sink (I know i will never get to a point where the fans would die on me but its good to have.) GPU: R9 270x TOXIC OC Edition R.C.: At the time it was the best 200$ GPU in the mid range category. PSU: EVGA 500B - R.C.: Good quality PSU, good reviews and japanise capacitors. Storage: 120GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, 500 GB Samsung 7200 RMP HDD. R.C.: Kept it from the older PC, Windows and GTA 5 on the SSD other data on the HDD (Standard). Case fans: ??? 10-15$ each. (2x 140 mm front, 2x 120 mm back?) -Questions: -Which CPU should i get? As i mentioned i do not plan on overclocking the i5-6400 is 194$ and the i5-6500 is 214$. The difference between these two as 3-5 FPS and 5-7% in performance. Is it worth the 20$? The whole budget to the Case(75$)+CPU (194$ or 214$)+Cooler(42$)+RAM(85$)+Case fans (45-55$ 10-15$ each? )+Motherboard(125$) would be around 500$-550$. -What case fans would be good for that S340, it has an air filter for the front fans( Maybe Static pressure fans? 140MM 2x on front and 2x 120 MM at the back i know the additional 2 fans (1 front 1 back) only means 1-2 degrees lower temps but it might be an overkill and waste of money, that's why i ask you guys! . -Can high voltage (1.5V) ram damage the Skylake CPUs? That's about it. I'm sorry if i know something wrong, feel free to tell me. English isn't my native language. I really appreciate your time and effort in reading and answering to me.

Hello everyone, This is my first post on the forums so I hope I address everything that needs to be addressed. I am looking to build a PC specifically for light to moderate gaming (I say that only because this won't be my primary form of gaming so I'm not looking for crazy, over-the-top performance), internet browsing, and general productivity. My main goal is to play most games at 1080p, 60FPS. I have been lurking around on this form, as well as multiple PC subreddits to gather as much info I could before making a purchase. Here is what I have come down to as my future PC build. My budget for everything (Literally everything; PC, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc...) is $1000-$1100USD. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($197.99 @ SuperBiiz) CPU Cooler: CRYORIG C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($34.99 @ OutletPC) Motherboard: MSI B150I GAMING PRO AC Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard ($109.69 @ SuperBiiz) Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($59.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($40.14 @ NCIX US) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($0.00) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card ($198.98 @ Newegg) Case: Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV ITX Mini ITX Tower Case ($75.98 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($63.49 @ Newegg) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($83.89 @ OutletPC) Case Fan: NZXT FN-120RB 47.3 CFM 120mm Fan ($8.98 @ SuperBiiz) Monitor: Acer R240HY bidx 23.8" 60Hz Monitor ($131.99 @ Amazon) Keyboard: AZIO PRISM Wired Slim Keyboard ($25.99 @ NCIX US) Total: $1032.10 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-06-23 16:14 EDT-0400 Here I'll explain some of my reasons for picking specific parts, so if you don't really care, you can just skip this part: I'm trying to go for a primarily white build. I went with the the fully modular power supply to possible incorporate white cables into the build. As for the choice of CPU cooler; I'm not looking to necessarily overclock (although I am not eliminating the possibility altogether). I'm also not looking for the best performance either. This was more of an aesthetic choice rather than a performance choice. I know that it will provide slightly better performance as opposed to the stock cooler, but I also understand that there are probably better coolers at there at this price point. This is a piece I would rather stick with, unless of course you can convince me otherwise. Also, the Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV is another key point in the build, as this is the case I really want to stick with. Other than those two parts, there is really nothing that I specifically want in this build. As long as it remains a white, mini ITX form factor build, I should be happy. In other notes, I don't have a mouse in this build as that is something I already own. Also, I can get HDDs for free so I put that in at $0 So here are my questions: Is the i5-6500 and GTX 960 4GB combo enough for 1080p 60fps? Would I be able to downgrade to an i3-6100 to save some money without it bottle-necking the GPU? If I could downgrade to an i3, would I be able to upgrade the GPU to something a little bit better without bottle-necking issues? Finally, and most importantly, is there anything in this build that I should change? Thanks for your help!
