Hello everyone, I would love to switch to elementary OS/ubuntu full time but there are just a few issues holding me back right now. 1. My laptop does not go to sleep when I close the lid. The fan just keeps on spinning, and battery drains too, and when I open the lid again it seems that everything just crashes , the backlight turns on but the screen is black. 2. Amazon prime/netflix won't load Full HD videos, they're stuck in 480p 3. the audio quality from speakers is much, much worse than when in windows. also by default only 2 speakers work but I was able to solve that with the solution provided here. My laptop is a HP envy x360 with Ryzen 3500u and I've tried updating to the latest kernel(5.9) with UKUU. Is there any way to solve these issues?

Hi, Linux noob here, could really use with a hand. So TL:DR intro: Built a new pc, Ryzen 9 5900x (by some miracle i found one), b550 Gigabyte Aorus elite board, a gtx970 (to be replaced w/ 3080); ran a hackintosh build for the past half-decade before this, can't stand W10 but im resorting to it for now, need Linux operational. I installed Elementary OS, but it doesn't detect the Ethernet connection so it didn't download a lot of essential stuff. I downloaded the realtek network drivers onto a usb but needed to run the 'make' command which is unavailable as it didn't install 'build essentials' since there's no internet connection. So I googled how to install stuff on linux offline and got to guides using Keryx as a mobile software on a USB. I tried that but that needs a 'wxversion module' which again needs to be downloaded and is currently unavailable. If anyone could chime in with some useful advice I'd be really thankful

I installed KDE on my elementary OS machine using command line sudo tasksel install kubuntu-desktop It prompted me to choose between the desktop environment. After I chose SDDM and rebooted it is stuck at the elementary os logo screen and refuses to boot into kde. I thought it was grabbing some configuration files so I left it like that overnight but it was still stuck at that screen when i checked today morning. is there a way for me to fix this? like choose the DE before it boots and change it to lightdm?

HI, Recently I installed elementary OS on my HP Pavillion, since before I used a PC to use linux. Battery life on windows has been great, getting around 5-6 hours of battery life. But on the other hand, on linux I keep on getting maximum 2 hours. I've tried installing TLP, Slimbook Battery and some other battery saving apps but none helped. Does anyone has a solution? Thanks

So, I am building a mini itx computer to serve as owncloud server and as an entertainment htpc. I would like to ask what linux distro and/or desktop replacement should I use that allows setting up the server but is user friendly enough that a person can use the interface to easily open a programme. (My parents will be using it and my father only knows how to type and open programmes like Chrome. He doesn't know how to even copy and paste, that is how bad it is. I would go for Windows, but owncloud stopped updating the server software for windows.) I am looking at Ubuntu and using a desktop replacement, but I like Element OS because of the clean native interface but afraid that owncloud won't run.

Um... I have an old MacBook Pro (5,1) (A1286), Intel C2Duo (2.66 GHz), 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, GeForce 9400M, 9600GT. Since MacOS got super slow, I installed Ubuntu and have been using it (owing to familiarity from my previous school's smartboard). I have been browsing for Linux distros, and really liked Elementary OS. But I have minimal experience in Linux distro installations... So, does it do driver installation automatically (like ubuntu?). Also, I read it's also debian based like Ubuntu, so all the Ubuntu terminal commands will work, right? (Y'know, like sudo apt install tuxpaint etc.) Please help! Hi, so here is my problem. I need to get into my hard drive through terminal, but can't, because the hard drive has been named "New volume". The terminal won't read two separate words (at least I don't know how), is there any way to rename it? The hardware setting menu in Elementary OS is awful, couldn't find anything here

When i first installed Linux (elementary os) i had no problems but when i tried to play Steam games i had horrible fps (24fps in csgo). I have not installed any drivers, other than the drivers that install automatically when installing Linux. What drivers should i install and how? My computer has an Amd APU and GPU(in dual graphics mode(i hope?)). Edit: is the dual graphics is a problem?

Hello Forums, I need help instaling Linux Elementary OS on my Imac late 2009 11.1 I use a USB as boot drive in the grub i select install elementary OS and press the "E" key to edit it to Nomodeset and press F10 to boot. I then install the elementary OS luna and then i press Reboot and then i run into problems first i get grub to go in normal mode or recovery i use Nomodeset again to boot Normal mode but instead of the GUI i get a Command line mode / Terminal mode and it asks me for a Username + password after that i press Startx and get a error " No screens found", I think it has something to do with my Graphics card driver ( radeon 4850HD). so here is what i need help with, Any knows how to get back to the GUI mode? All help is much appreciated. ( sorry for my bad english it's not my native language)

Hey guys, I'm starting to think about designing my next rig and one of the thoughts that has crossed my mind is the possibility of installing a Linux Distro on it rather than Windows. I was wondering if this is a good decision or wither I should dual boot Windows and Linux and use Windows for Gaming or if I should just throw the idea of Linux out of my head and stick with Windows. I know there are a number of Steam Games now available on Linux and that they are likely to increase in number due to the introduction of Steam OS but I'm wondering if I'm going to have any issues with drivers or anything or the sort which is also putting me off a little. The Linux distros I am currently considering are: Unbuntu, Linux Mint and Elementary OS. (All of which I have used before for short periods of time when I was checking out Linux Distros fell in love with the three of them, especially Elementary.) If anyone has any experience with gaming on Linux I'd be grateful to hear some feedback on their experience and overall wither people recommend doing so or not. Keep in mind my next build probably wont be until early 2015 and I'm guessing that Steam OS will be a little more cooked by then. So yeah, once again I'd be grateful for any feedback.

Since I’m a college student, being able to do all of my Powerpoints and endless Word documents is a must on a weekly basis so I had to get some kind of alternative for Microsoft Office 2013 that I have been using on Windows. So I started off with the obvious choice being the Libre Office. Sadly I have never liked it and it also turned out that I have ran into quite a few compatibility issues to do with the layouts and looks of the work previously saved using Microsoft’s Office software. So after some time researching I have found the Kingsoft Office. Just as the name suggests... It is a clone of Microsoft’s Office but quite honestly I must say it is a very good clone. Both in terms of looks and compatibility it is spotless and looks, feels and is able to save in the formats that the standard Microsoft Office suit can. I guess the only disadvantage is that it only comes with alternatives for Word, Powerpoint and Excel but for me personally that is enough since I will never need to use any other software from the Office suit apart from the main three. As you can see in the image below it looks identically to the Office 2013 at least with the skin I use since you can also make it look like the 2007 and 2003 version if you wish to do so. (Click on the image to see it in full size) In terms of comparison... I can’t really do much since they are nearly identical and Kingsoft’s Office suit 100% compatible with the formats that Microsoft’s Office produces so there has been absolutely no problems for me to us the documents and edit them. Note that you can also save in the standard Microsoft Office formats so that the documents will work on it. I guess this is the best alternative until some day Microsoft ports Office to Linux and it really isn’t too bad considering that it is FREE! Alright so carrying on with the comparison today I will say a thing or two about the SMPlayer compared to Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. But wait what about the default movie player? To be honest I didn’t even bother using it any longer as soon as I realised that MKV formats don’t play then I instantly downloaded VLC despite the fact I didn’t like it on Windows before. Again without surprise I didn’t like VLC because of how it managed the subtitles in my anime and a lack of simple functions such as click to pause/play. After some minutes of research I have found SMPlayer and instantly installed it. All of the formats that I have played so far which are: MP4, AVI and MKV worked out of the box; assuming that the 3rd party software that I have installed after installing the system contained the required codecs. Note that I have later on installed the latest codes separately just to make sure I have the latest once. So to the comparison... After using SMPlayer for a longer period of time I can say full heartedly that in my eyes it is the MPC-HC but for Linux. It has all of the functionality that you would expect from a media player and more. A feature that popped out to me was the ability to change the skin of the player which I instantly changed to the one found on MPC-HC because of the simplicity as pictured below. (Click on the image to see it in full size) I also love the fact that you can click the screen to pause/play... YES I KNOW it is like the lamest of features someone could possibly be excited about when using a media player but I really got used to it on Windows and I valued it so yeah... The interface highly resembles the one that is in MPC-HC so I surely felt home here and found it easy to navigate around with. One thing that I have notice and mentioned before is that I do very rarely get slight stutter every 10 minutes or so and I think that the cause is either on the players side or the graphics driver. One way or the other it’s nothing major or disrupting to a level that I would notice it as much so it isn’t much of a deal. Just to lastly mention I did throw different types of videos at it starting with some 720p anime and ending with 1080p Bluray films and both ran as you would expect. Perfectly fine.
