Hello everyone, I want to setup a WiFi network for my home. And I'm completely new to this so I need some advice but I can't find much on the internet. (Most of the stuff is a bit confusing). And I don't want to be asking advice from any ISPs in my area (since they're all like yeah it'll be fine!) So my home is actually 200 sq yards and 2 floors (2 flats actually one on 3rd floor and other on 4th floor). (All concrete and bricks) no wooden walls and stuff. And I have nearly 20 devices in my home (most of them are always active) What kind of router should I be using. Like should I buy some mesh router (if mesh how many mesh routers? 2 or 3 or 4?) or should I get a switch and multiple access points (but I have never done any network setup before so pls recommend some beginner friendly solutions) (some budget options would be really nice)

Sorry.. I feel like a baby asking this. I've been using PC's for over 20 years but never learned much about wifi, I've just been using it for the last few years without thought. I'm looking to expand with some different options for other PC's.. and need to purchase some antenna and I'm clueless. I'm looking for small ones (6-12cm).. and I'm only seeing 2.4G band and not dual band. However, the PCIe card I've been using smaller ones and has been fine over the years. I get 4/5 bands for 5G and 3/5 bands for 2.4G (which I don't use but it still shows up in the sys tray thing). The router/modem that sends the signal out doesn't even have an external antenna. Do I need a 2.4/5G dual band antenna, for plugging into PCIe (or ngff plugged directly into the motherboard).. or will I be ok with 2.4G antenna? What happens to 5G if I'm using a single band antenna? Is it just a weaker signal? I also read that a single band antenna performs better than dual band hybrid, would I be better off just getting a 5G single band antenna? Do these even exist? Is it possible that the antenna at the back of my PC right now are single band 2.4ghz and I get 5G signal because the newer technology is so much stronger/effecient.. or it is 100% sure that the current antenna I have are dual band? They are 3 X 8cm ones. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Background Okay, so i'm about to move into my own apartment for the first time And I really enjoy streaming to Twitch on the side while I game. The place is not going to be big because it's only me so, what should I look for in a router? Main question? The internet plan we're looking at is 100/100 unless I need something better down the line? I'm mainly looking to have the capabilities to stream at 6k bit rate if I want to later. I don't think I'd need more download though but we'll see if I can find a better deal. My thoughts What i've learned so far is that I should probably have a dual band router so I can use a 5ghz connection for my wireless headphones for my phone. My computer will be using ethernet connection and then I don't think there's many more devices being connected. I haven't bought a tv or much else yet. Might buy a nintendo switch at some point but I don't suppose that matters much? Asus RT-N66U is what i've been looking at so far but I have no idea if there's some special I should be looking for in a router besides the dual band thing.

Hi fellow LTTians, Need help with choosing a nice alternative router / modem for my house. Currently I'm on a 200 Mbps connection using "Tenda AC9 AC1200 Smart Dual-Band Gigabit WiFi Router". And I reside in a place where I've 50 Mbps fibernet connection which is connected to D-link DIR-615 Wireless Router (which I guess is not a dual band router) and I play from a distance of around 25-30 speed. I get packet losses etc. I've two ideas Idea 1: replacing my Tenda router with an more powerful router and to use Tenda for this 50 Mbps connection. Idea 2: replacing D-Link wireless router with an router which has better WiFi range and a dual bandwidth connection. Most probably I'll stick with idea 2 which is lot cheaper for me Please suggest me a good router (s) for both of the ideas. Both 200 Mbps and 50 Mbps is used for online gaming and endless video streaming etc. I'll purchase the modem/router from the following sites Amazon India Flipkart TheItDepot MD Computers Please suggest me a viable option from the aforementioned sites for my use case. Thanks in advance.

Hello LTTians, Need help with choosing router for long range connectivity, I live in an apartment which is around 2300 to 2400 square feet, need some suggestions in choosing covering best ac smart router to cover the aforementioned space. The apartment is made up of concrete and I'm going to place the router in one corner of the house (due to cable routing restrictions from modem to router), on the bright side there's no obstruction from that corner to other rooms. Not looking forward to use mesh network. Please suggest me a good smart ac router for my use case. The below are the sites which I'll be using to purchase router. Amazon India The IT Depot Flipkart MD Computers Looking forward for some good suggestion. Thanking you in advance.

Tenda AC 1200 Dual Band Router - $27 I was in a tough spot financially and my old dual band router crapped the bed. I needed a new router ASAP and only had about a $50 budget to work with. After perusing Newegg, Amazon, and a few other sites, I decided on the Tenda AC 1200 AC6, as it had a 4 star rating on Amazon with over 700 reviews, and the $27 price tag with Prime Shipping seemed almost too good to be true for the specs and reviews. Opening the box, I was greeted with a "Gamer-like" and all-black aesthetic. It's angular, gaunt, and a bit gaudy. Definitely screams "2006 gaming PC". 4 large and very adjustable antennas stick out from the back and sides. It included the manual, a power adapter, and a single short CAT-5 cable. It features 3 100mbps network jacks, and a WAN port. I was disappointed by lack of gigabyte ethernet, but at the price point I can forgive this, especially for our use case. Interface is okay. Has all the features I would expect from a consumer router, such as a guest network, VPN support, DDNS support, device-specific parental controls, port forwarding, and the like. Once nice touch is the ability to turn down (or up) the transmit power for both bands independently. It also has beam-forming. I live in a 3 story, 3000sq.ft. house. The router is located in the center of the 2nd floor. I have a 75 mbps down, 5 mbps up cable connection from Spectrum. Speed test over ethernet gave me full speeds, as expected. 2.4g from the farthest reaches of the house gave me full speeds, as did 5g. I was seriously impressed by this feat, as my previous Netgear would have me at 20mbps down in my office. I have not tested PC to PC file transfers, so I'm not sure exactly how fast it's capable of, but for my purpose, it filled the need quite nicely. Only time will tell if the radios will hold up with constant use, but I purchased the 2 year replacement plan for an extra two bucks, so even if it goes belly up, I can get it replaced for free. I didn't expect much from this unit, and was quite happy with what I received. I had originally planned on the cheap router as a stop gap until I could afford a $150-200 router, but now I'm thinking I may just keep this one in service until it dies. If/when this happens, I'll be sure to update this thread.

Hi All, I bought a new router a few weeks back and its a dual band router. It has 2.4 and 5 GHZ connectivity. I can connect to 2.4 just fine with any device I have. 5 GHZ however, I can connect to using my Note 5 but I am unable to surf the web afterwards. Is there a specific configuration do I need to have or maybe a specific channel? I tried switching channels and trying again but all the available channels produced the same outcome.

Alright, so I went through a lot of routers because of this issue I've been having so basically, my wired connection to my computer is fine in the house, but my WiFi is the issue, mobile devices in the house experience no connection issues from the router, and that made me go and buy a dual band router, hoping it will help me, anyways, let me explain. The issue resolves every time I restart my router or reboot it. the issue is that after some time, the devices that are connected via wifi just drop the connection, and refuse to reconnect again, most of the devices in my house are apple devices ranging to iPhones to iPads, there's one laptop and then two other android phones. my internet speed should be fine, as the use of these devices are not heavy and they dont download a lot of things. the router I recently bought is a TP-Link TL-WDR4900 Router. Talking to my ISP is basically useless because the people who work there are absolutely dumbfounded and know jack sh*t about networking, which makes me wonder how the fu*k they got the job. I hope you guys can help me resolve this issue as fast as possible, thanks a lot!

Help! USB Wireless Adapter for Steam In-Home Streaming.
BallisticPeanut posted a topic in Networking
I want to try In-Home Streaming on my laptop, but I'm having a hard time picking out a usb adapter that isn't too expensive, but will still be reliable for streaming. The router I'm using is an ASUS RT-N56U so I am limited to 5Ghz Wireless N. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.- 5 replies

Upgrading my wireless network from 2.4ghz single band wireless n to a dual band Wireless N setup and I'm looking for a USB adapter for upgrading my laptop to dual band. I would like the adapter to be rather small & compact so I can just leave it plugged in and work on both the 2.4 & 5ghz networks as some of the adapters I've been looking at were 802.11AC adapters that don't seem to support 5ghz 802.11N, only 2.4. Does anybody have any suggestions for a USB adapter that might be suitable?

I'm buying for a small business, they need a router that I can stick outside their networking closet once it's set up and have them never have to do anything with it. The asus AC66U was the obvious choice until I saw reviews saying that it has pretty serious problems later on in it's life cycle. I looked at some recent reviews and couldn't find anyone pointing to a specific issue, which makes me think that it may have been resolved by now with a hardware/software revision. If that's the case I'll likely stick with the asus. Thanks!

Thinking of purchasing a new simultaneous dual band router and had some questions. 1) Does this create 2 seperate networks to connect to or does it see what device is connecting and tell it to connect to either 2.4 or 5 ghz 2) What would I use if i wanted to extend this network? I currently have a modem that acts as a router and 2 apple airport extremes, 1 at the top and bottom of the house, that create networks off of it. Obviously i would have to get an extender or repeater(please explain to me the difference) to support extending both networks. 3) if i connect to the router through ethernet, is it the 5ghz or 2.4 ghz connection, or are the 2.4 and 5ghz only pertaining to wifi. Thanks
