I'm currently trying to help my friend pick out a laptop since their old one is dying, and with a budget of around $1500 we've arrived at the following 2 laptops, the HP Spectre x360 15, and the Dell XPS 13 touch. I wanted to ask for some help picking between the 2, or if there's an alternative in this price range that would be a better choice. Their main use would be media consumption and coding, but one of the reasons the budget is so high is because they want their new laptop to last them at least 10 years like their old macbook has (and it's their first windows laptop so it should leave a good impression on them). They didn't want a 1080p screen, so we've only picked 4k ones. Also gaming ability is not a factor, it's just that the Spectre with the best specs we found happens to have a dedicated graphics card included. Below are some specs of the laptops, but some of the things that concerns them is battery life and speaker quality. From some reviews I've seen that the XPS has a worse speaker compared to the Spectre, but I can't find anything about real battery life (like how long will it actually stay on during normal use, not just a random estimate from the manufacturer's website). Any help or input would be appreciated, thank you. About 2 weeks ago i got my hands on the Powercolor Devil Box that I had been for so long saving for. My brother for Christmas had bought me a Nitro Sapphire 380x Gaming Series card for whatever egpu i was going to get. Once I had got this my brother put the card in and it didn't work right away and I do not know what he did to get it working cause i was on the John but he got it working some how, and all was fine or so we thought DUN DUN DUNNNN... It worked that night flawlessly and same with the beginning of the next morning then while I was playing a game ((Heroes and Generals) - Great game btw) the game randomly closed and on the bottom right of my screen it said this device may not work properly with the thunderbolt logo on the message I relaunched it only to find my game running at awful fps around the same fps the game ran at before I had the gpu. I got my brother he went into afterburner and it showed no gpu was connected to my laptop I do not know what he did after that cause he was reeeeaaaaalllly pissed so I booked it out of there he concluded it must have been something with the Thunderbolt sorftware and that there should be a patch/ additional software for it in the mean time I have not seen any software/patches yet and every time I turn on my computer it still gives me the message with the thunderbolt logo except this time it had a different message because after the gpu stopped working we reinstalled the drivers for the Thunderbolt 3 stuff any input/guidance is appreciated I am rocking a Dell Xps 13 9350

Hi. I've been trying to compare the three laptops and can't decide. There's also not much comparisons between these two. Trying to choose between Razer blade stealth (i7 skylake with 8gb ram and 128 gb) vs Dell XPS 13 (i5 kaby lake or sky lake, 8gb model) and Surface pro 4 (i5 skylake, 8gb model). I'm mainly choosing between the razer (for its good hardware) vs the dell (for the battery life and decent hardware). Any advise. I'm trying to take everything into consideration, I'll be using this mainly for productivity and school. So battery life is kinda important, but is it worth giving it up for that skylake i7-7200u? P.S. If you think Dell is better, should I choose kaby lake (940 usd) or skylake (855usd). Is the price difference worth it? Thanks!!

Alright so i have a Dell XPS 13 9350, that has a USB-C port that support the Thunderbolt 3 Protocol I am trying to set up an external GPU and here is my plan -External PCI-E Slot (V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock) -HDMI 2.0 Cable -HDMI 2.0 to Thunderbolt 3 Adapter The HDMI cable will run NOT from the graphics card, but from the External Dock itself to tranfer the data to the Thunderbolt 3 port. Will this work? So be honest, I promise I won't get mad... LOL... Might get disappointed to myself and get depressed and all but, whatevs, right? So I was in need for a compact laptop, like in a hurry, mainly for just taking notes and programming on the go and such... in other words, for work. And I also wanted an stylish one. So long story short, I bought an $2000 worth of DELL XPS 13, including tax and all, the newest model as of now, with i7 7500U. Then later I remembered, before I freaking wanted the razerblade stealth, which has a better spec and not to mention, worth like $1200 here in Japan... When I saw the price, I was just like, FU~~~~~~CK! At this point my world just got destroyed... And I mean ultrabook is cool and such it DELL XPS 13 has a very good look but spec-wise... Razerblade is better overall... So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if there are people like me out there who are looking for a new laptop, and thinking, "Wow, DELL XPS 13 might be a good one...", I'll tell you what, go for the razeblade! Depressed idiot potato out!

So i bought my xps 9350 a while ago thinking that I didnt need any 2 in 1 functionality but as of recently i realized having a stylus with my laptop would be amazing (yes I have a touch screen) I hate the rubber tipped gigantic stylus' and i was wondering if there was good stylus (similar to the surface pen) that would go well with a touch screen laptop??

So my parents have always got my brothers and sisters mac-books for college and now its my turn. They say its better and macs dont get viruses and will last longer compared to windows laptops.Basically they think windows laptops will get viruses easily and break. I know this is garbage but is their any validity in the statement that macs dont get viruses? I was thinking of getting the xps 13 instead or maybe the new one with the thinner bezels. The macbooks dont even have 8th gen processors yet and I imagine in 2018 they will bump up the price. Thoughts on the everything I said and how to convince my parents on this one as my entire family buys everything apple and I am the lone exception who never usually buys apple.

Advice needed: Surface Book vs Dell XPS 13
Atlantean posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi everybody, I'm starting my master degree this month, and I need a new laptop ASAP, and I'd like your advice. I'm torn between 2 devices: the Microsoft Surface Book and the Dell XPS 13. I love the Surface Book for its build quality, the detachable screen with the stylus, the better front-facing camera (I skype with my family in Portugal) and the optional discreet GPU. I love the Dell XPS 13 because it's smaller and lighter, gives you more power for a smaller price (if you exclude the surface's GPU), its battery life is even better, and it's a lot more repair-friendly. Basically, my heart leans towards the surface, but my wallet leans towards the dell. I'm someone who likes to draw, so I guess that's why the surface is so seductive. The bigger screen seems awesome for productivity too. But I'm also having my salary halved come November, and I'm in one of the most expensive countries in Europe (Switzerland), so money is an issue. Here, you can get an XPS 13 with a Core i5-6200U for 1299 chf, and a Surface Book with a i5-6300U for 1899 chf, the only meaningful differences being the GPU and higher-resolution display on the surface. I'll need to work with statistics software (STATA), so having a good CPU is handy. On the other hand, for drawing graphs and creating presentations, a GPU might come in handy, but I'm not sure by how much. I fear that if I choose the surface, I won't use its GPU to its full potential. And I'm not sure if the other differences make the price difference worth it. What are your thoughts on these 2? If you've used either (or both!) before, what would you recommend?- 6 replies

Need some helpful opinions on Laptops
TheToastEmpire posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi! So i'm kinda stuck, and I would love to have some outsider opinions on which daily driver laptop I should choose :). My price range is from $1000 - $1300 I've been researching the Dell XPS 13, and the Mac Book Pro for quite some time now, and I need to make a decision pretty soon here, since school is just starting, and all I have is a gaming PC for home use. My PC has windows 10, and I'm loving it, but I'm willing to try Mac OS for a change. I would use the laptop for mostly school work and video/photo editing a ton (I also do some code work). I would need something to last me through the day (I was thinking atleast 7 hours). I would probably also use the laptop for some very light gaming when i'm traveling (League of Legends and Overwatch), and the new Intel Iris graphics seem really nice for light gaming, which would bring the XPS 13 out of my price range. Any help is fantastic, thank you -
Hey everyone, So I've had my dell xps 13 for over a year now and all of a sudden the keyboard starts acting up. Now I don't think it's dead: the back light key still works and the keyboard works fine on the windows 10 password login screen when my laptop turns on. But once I get to the desktop screen the keyboard goes unresponsive. Anyone get this before or have any ideas on what to do?

For the past two years ive had a 15" Macbook pro retina fully decked out with all the possible upgrades possible and last night it died on me . My first thought was the Razer blade stealth that looks very attractive but has a disapointing 8GB of ram and is currently not available where i live ( the UK ), Secondly i looked at the xps 13 but that also has 8GB of memory and i need at least 16GB. my problem is i need something ultra thin that has a intel i7, 16GB of ram and a dedicated GPU or a option for external GPU support, there is no real budget so go wild but i dont want anything bigger than 14-15" and idealy 13".

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if there are any Dell XPS 13 owners out there on LTT that have, or have had, coil whine issues with their laptop. If so, how did you go on to get it resolved? As for me, I'm contemplating on sending mines back to Microsoft to see what they can do with it. The coil whine occurs when I'm scrolling with the touch-pad, doing something intensive, or when I'm streaming media (a crackling sound could be heard from the speakers/headphone jack when sound is playing). It's a great laptop, but it just has a distracting coil whine.

Hi! I have a Dell XPS 13 2015 edition with the infinity display and the i7 processor. I am fairly sure that there is a microphone build in to the laptop, but neither the microphone setup in windows or any other apps can access it. It is kind of annoying because it makes it so I can't utilize Cortana or make any video chats without my headphones plugged in. Can anybody help? Thanks!

I had installed Linux mint 17.2 on the disk and encrypted it and everything worked flawlessly, Then i changed the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy to be able to Update the bios through FreeDOS on an SD card. Now the disk doesn't show up in Bios or the boot menu even though diagnostics detects the disk and says it's completely fine. I can see the disk when I boot to debian on a flashdrive and can't access it since the disk is encrypted. I am completely lost when it comes to fixing this, I dont want to contact dell unless I have to since my previous experiences with their customer support were horrible. Thanks for answers in advance

Hi guys, I am a college student and now I need a new laptop to use at the university. I Study computer engineering and so I need something powerful enough, as I have, as well as take notes, use compilers and virtual machines sometimes. I have two candidates, but I do not know which to choose, so I wanted to ask your advice. Which to choose between: 1. Dell XPS 13 2015: i5, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram and non-touch display 1080p (price € 1099) 2. Surface Pro 3: same configuration. (Price € 1,322 with Type Cover) I really like both, but I do not know whether to sacrifice the touch screen to save € 200. The touch model of the Dell for me is not viable, because i don't find comfortable a regular laptop with a touch screen. In long term(it should be my study machine for the next 4/5 years) wich is the best? Which would you recommend? Thanks in advance P.S. : I've a pretty powerfull desktop at home, so if you have other suggestion or combination

Having been a long time Linus/NCIX tech tips watcher I decided to ask the community for some advise. I'm starting college a few weeks and wanted to buy a laptop. Initially I had saved up around 2800$ and wanted to go for a premium grade laptop like the Thinkpad W540 or the Dell xps 15. But as Intel is battling the laws of physics and pushing its Broadwell laptops past the early 2015 mark, I have decided to buy a mid-high end ultrabook instead and use with my Sony vaio s15(which has a battery life that looks to be powered by a potato) for all the "heavy lifting". My budget is around 900$, The laptop should have a good if not great screen running at at least 1080p , a awesome battery life(7.5+ hrs), a good keyboard with nice travel (I have been known to pound my keys) and a I5 with 8 gigs of RAM(I wouldn't worry too much about the storage capacity, 120 gigs should be just fine). The trackpad doesn't matter much but should have decent gesture support. So far my searches have turned up the Dell xps 13(890$) http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Dell-XPS-13-4289-Touchscreen-Ultrabook---Intel-Core-i5/productID.304981600 and the ASUS Zenbook UX31LA(840$) http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/ASUS-Zenbook-UX31LA-US51T-Signature-Edition-Laptop/productID.306270800 as my main two choices. I have looked at the XPS 12 but the XPS 13 seems to be better(Battery life, bigger screen etc.) **ALSO, I HAVE A STRICT POLICY AGAINST MACs.**
