  1. 1. Budget & Location 100000 INR (1500 USD ), India 2. Aim I'm a Web / Mobile designer (Photoshop + AI) /developer (Visual Studio + Android studio) . + Planning to switch my career to data science and would be working on basic machine learning algos. + Casual single monitor 1080p 60fps gaming, BF1, Overwatch, rocket league, Assassin creed. 3. Monitors I've 2 monitors both 1080p 60ps and 120fps (Not looking for more than 60fps for gaming) 4. Peripherals $1500 doesn't include Monitors/ Keyboard/ Mouse/ OS as i already have those. However it'll include a UPS (Battery backup) Don't care much about case/looks/ RGB light. 5. Why are you upgrading? Upgrading from a 2012 laptop (AMD A10-4600M / 6 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 / AMD Radeon 7670M 2GB/ 1TB HDD) Thinking of the following build Ryzen 5 1600/ 16 GB 2400Mhz DDR4 / GTX 1060 6 gigs / Samsung 850 pro 256GB + 1TB Seagate Barracuda [Updated] https://in.pcpartpicker.com/list/hbhsTH Price of hardware in Amazon India is ~15-20% more than those in Amazon USA. Suggestions? This would me my first PC build
  2. Hello guys, Long time sub of LTT, first time forum user, long post up ahead, bewarned, thank you for your patience. This will be my first build, and I intend for it to be a long-term workhorse, to last at least 4 years, hope I don't need to mess around with it too much, mostly set and forget. I value 'easy'/'simple' builds, nothing should be a 'Linus' style, improvised solution, as I said, this needs to be a workhorse. Machine should be ready before June of 2017, but after February 2017 (I am fixing my room first). Assume I do not have any existing hardware/peripherals. Willing to buy some parts 2nd hand. Here we go: 1. Budget & Location Budget: At the moment hard to say, approximately AUD $ 2.6k, all-in (including all extras). I may be able to stretch slightly. Delayed purchase of some non-essential parts is possible (for instance, extra RAM). Location: Sydney, Australia. Variety of options for parts is not too bad, but probably not as great as USA, currency-wise, we're about 72 cents to the dollar vs USD. Climate can get quite hot during the summer heat waves - my location gets 40oC+ for quite a few days every year, and many days above 35oC. I expect to be able to operate this machine during those times, with limited loss in performance. Machine location: In my (small) room. Silence is going to be quite important. I do not need a fan-less build, I do not need dead silence, but as much as possible, the decibels should be reduced. 2. Aim I am an engineering research student, so my use case is probably not the 'normal' gamer/streamer type; I shall split this up in the my 4 primary use cases: Engineering simulation: Primarily I will be running Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations (CFD) on this machine, I will run the 'big' simulations at my university facility, but some of the 'smaller' projects and most of the meshing, I will run at home. Programs I plan to run are ANSYS Fluent and CFX, OpenFOAM and if I can get the license, Star CCM (maybe)... From past experience, I will need at least 16 GB of RAM for this. CPU parallelization is also a great booster of CFD workload, in some programs more than others. Expect this machine to be working for days at a time. Engineering modelling: CAD work, not 3D animation. Primary software packages are CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk AutoCAD, Solidworks. From past experience, most decently powered PCs can do the job, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Engineering calculation: Programs like Matlab, and Excel. Any decently powerful CPU and more than 8GB of RAM should be enough, so I'm not concerned. Gaming: AAA titles - think Bioshock, Far Cry, Crysis, Civ 6, Metal Gear Solid V, Project Cars etc etc. I also love Skyrim and Fallout graphics mods, and will finally get to run the 'pretty' looking ones, hopefully, maybe... I'm don't *need* frame rates to be high, as long as they are > 30fps I'm happy. But I would love to run very high/ ultra graphics settings if possible, I love to look at pretty stuff. Planned resolution of ~1440p, not 4k. I do not play FPS' that often, so high fps counts not essential. Aside from all of this, I will be doing a lot of research work on this machine, so things like reading, lots of typing, more typing. haha. Occasional image and video editing. Also, Chrome tabs. Chrome tabs. 3. Monitors Space on my desk is limited, as I need to use my 15.6" laptop as well. Desk dimension is ~120cmx60cm. If I can, I would really love to run Ultrawide. Not sure if I should run 3440x1440, 2560x1080, or 2560x1440. Thoughts? As far as panel is concerned, IPS or LED is probably best, never been a fan of TN. Refresh rate doesn't need to be much higher than 75Hz?. Latency <10ms. Love accurate colours. If space does turn out to be an issue, or cost, compromise to 1080p is possible. 4. Peripherals + Others Mouse+keyboard: I would prefer a keyboard that is not mechanical, and relatively quiet. I do not mind mechanical, but the noise has been too annoying for me from past experience. The majority of my history with keyboards has been with laptop keyboards. Nothing particular for the mouse, prefer ambidextrous, simple, no extra buttons, scroll wheel essential, with click and side scroll a nice bonus. If there is a package that will also allow me to dock+charge+switch between my phone/laptop/desktop, that would be super awesome. Toss of a coin between wired or wireless to be honest. Sound: I'll use the stock motherboard sound with my existing speakers for now. Possible sound card in the far future, uncertain. Bay devices: Need card reader eventually, prefer BluRay drive as well for multimedia. Hard drive: I need storage much more than I need speed. Prepared to sacrifice SSD to save cost, CFD files can get very big and messy. Case: I don't care about looks. I care about ease of use, and silence. Best case scenario, mid-tower size. Currently looking at Define R5. Cooling is also important. Historically, dust seems to be a problem with my house and my room - dust filters and other dust minimization or ease of cleaning tricks are welcome. PSU: Don't need a tonne of power, only going for 1 GPU realistically, and non-OC CPU. Efficiency and silence will be key. I'm thinking 500-750W? OS: Will require Windows and Office. Wireless: Should need it, although nothing too fancy. 5. Why are you upgrading? I need more power for the work that I want to do. Also want to finally get a larger than 15.6" screen. Need more storage than my current laptop+ExtHDD setup can provide. 6. Extra Notes? USB Type C port on the front/top of the case is a nice bonus, planning for a new phone soon. No plans for OC of CPU or GPU. Currently unsure if GPU can help speed up the CFD simulations, or rather, what type of GPUs will speed it up - reading up on it. Small possibility of running 2 GPUs to speed up simulations, but prefer single GPU gaming. Not sure if I need ECC memory, I don't think the computers I have used for CFD in the past had it (except the big HPC server at my university), so I do not think ECC is necessary for this build. If someone here knows more, and points out flaws in my approach, I am willing to completely reassess my budget for a justified improvement in reliability/performance/silence etc. I'm not biased towards any brand, but Zen has gotten me excited, due to them likely having more cores given the similar price/power of i5s. As little RGB nonsense as possible, I find that shit annoying. Back-lit keyboard is acceptable but not necessary. Conclusion Once again, massive thanks for those who have stuck with the long post. I post lots of detail here to not waste time later. Thanks in advance for the feedback/opinions. TL;DR Need new PC build for 2.6k AUD, used for engineering simulation work and gaming. Building early 2017. Looking forward to your responses.
  3. Hello! I have purchased parts for my computer up until about three years ago, but I left my rig for my sister to use while I moved out about 1,5 years ago. I was thinking it was time to start doing some work again just for the fun of it when I get back home over the holidays. I am for the most part a casual gamer meaning I played in low plats high diamond when I was playing regularly, and as I will be bringing my rig with me after the holidays, that's where I am planning on finishing the season. I also play some (500 hours or so) Witcher III and would prefer if my build could handle a solid 60 fps at 1920x1080. I have as well purchased Dishonored 2 as well as Watch_Dogs 2 and would hope to be able to play both of those games at somewhat high graphic settings without any performance issues regarding the fps. My currents specs are as following: NZXT Phantom 630 ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD FX-8350 4GHz Black Edition Noctua NH-D15 Single Fan CPU cooling NZXT HALE 82 80+ 750W Kingston HyperX DDR3 1866 MHz PnP 16GB Kingston 240 GB SSDNow V300 WD 1TB HDD (unknown model, it's really old) ASUS Strix Rx 470 OC 4GB The GPU is the latest addition and has not been installed yet, but I was thinking that I perhaps should mount an aftermarket cooler on it such as the Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV to reduce the noise level. I have also been thinking whether or not it would be a good idea to switch out the fans in the case from the stock NZXT coolers to some Noctua ones. Furthermore I have been considering watercooling such as the Corsair Hydro 115i or similar system. I know it's a tad overkill, but just for the fun of it. For the graphics I have been looking at purchasing a second Rx 470 OC 4GB and CF the two cards, but as I have yet to find confirmation regarding how a CF setup would perform in Witcher III, Dishonored 2 and Watch_Dogs 2, I have put that on hold for now. I know that I need more storage and for that I am considering to switch out the WD 1 TB for a new, perhaps WD Red 2 or 3 TB. I have limited knowledge of the current market, the best make and models etc. so all your input would be much appreciated. BoilInBagRis
  4. So is there any benefits in having a G-sync or Free-sync monitor compared to a 144hz monitor without either G-sync or Free-sync? This is just for casual 1080p gaming, though I would not like to see any stuttering or lag. Titles that I would like to play in the future is (Haven't got/built a PC yet.) : Anthem. Fortnite. Skyrim. Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Or any immersive game that may come out in the near future. Mostly RPG/ARPG games.
  5. Currency: Euro € Location: Germany Favorite sites to buy: www.mindfactory.de , www.amazon.de , www.mediamarkt.de Budget: about 1000€, flexible Hello, Since at the moment we only have 1 desktop in our house and my brother wants to play fortnite every day, I need a second PC, and a laptop would be great. But the thing is I'm trying to improve my ergonomics so I would like a setup where I can use external peripherals when I'm at my desk. So Thunderbolt 3 is a requirement, and it'd be great if you guys could also recommend some docks. The uses for the laptop would be: Casual gaming, nothing mega competitive so a high refresh screen isn't at the top of my list. Favorite games include: Forza Horizon 4,DiRT 4, X-Plane 11, rarely GTA V. Photo editing, nothing serious or professional but it'd be very nice if I could edit pictures on the go. So a nice accurate display is required. Writing, as in documents and school stuff, so the keyboard is pretty important. And of course media consumption and all the other normal laptop uses. The size should be around 15", since 17" is a little too much to comfortably carry around. Battery life is also a priority. Aaaand it must have a SSD. Or at least a free spot. As far as what I've looked at already, I'd love a Dell XPS 15, but from what I understand I can get better performance for cheaper if I sacrifice on size. Idk tho, which is why I'm asking. I hope I didn't forget anything important, and thanks in advance.
  6. So for the past few months ive been saving up money for custom build. Ive gone over everything and im stuck at cooling. What cooling should i go for, Air or liquid. the specs are CPU: ryzen 5 3600x GPU:rx 5500 xt oc 8gb variant RAM:Corsair 16gb DDR4 3200mhz rgb STORAGE: 1tb seagate hdd and a crucial m.2 nvme 500gb pcie gen 4 MOBO:MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Gaming motherboard. Im building this pc for gaming and occasionally streaming and cant decide for which type of cooling should i go for ps:i wont be doing any overclocking until neccesary. Thank You
  7. Hi I'm planning a build to start this july and i really want a white theme build ( so most of my parts will be white) I've already decided on my Graphics card and decided to go with ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Dual-Fan OC Edition Graphics Card (DUAL-GTX1060-O3G) I actually dont need a high end or memory videocard cause im not a hardcore gamer plus i only go for a budget casual gaming PC please help me pick out compatible parts for the videocard that i chose that will fit perfectly for the build. I know im asking too much but if you can please help me. 1. Budget and location: My budget will be $600 but can go until $750 and my location is at westcoast USA 2.AIM: is to build a budget causal 1080p gaming pc that can play games like pubg,skyrim,fallout,dota2,LoL,Cs:go,rainbowseige gta v at 1080p 3:Monitors: both of my monitors atm are 60hz 1080x1920 4. Peripherals: NONE i will be focusing on my tower first. 5: Reason: i really want to enjoy the feeling of putting parts together and learning through experience so i dont mind spending stuff for my PC and i really want to make my own 1080p gaming pc. PS: i really appreciate your help
  8. Hello, so this summer i am going away to work and i DONT WANT a notebook I will be moving probably once per month and i am looking for super small factor pc that will allow me to play casual games like CS:GO, League of Legends and then some more demanding titles like Tomb Raider, Battlefield. All on 1080p at least 30fps and CS:GO at least 60. Please bear in mind i already have a Tower pc that has i7-4790k 32gb ram 1000w psu r9 290x and ssd and like 8tb of hdd all of the components are watercooled. And no i dont want to tear this build apart and take some components with me or just put them into small case. My Budget: 500 euros (already have some components so dont count those in) Moto of this build: THE SMALLER THE BETTER I already have 2 builds made. When it comes to monitor i am not still decided i was wondering if buying the portable ASUS MB169B+ which is a 15.6" portable monitor powered through USB. The problem is i dont know if it can be used as MAIN and only monitor :-/ If anyone had any insight i would very love to hear it! I am ready to hear the critique and all the things you have to say guys if you have an alternative go for it
  9. Hey guys, was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for cheap laptops (~$500 AUD) for school. My current one is dying and has a horrible keyboard and touchpad. Looking for something with: 13.6 - 15.6" display (idgaf about resolution or quality here, as I realize it will almost be shitty no matter what) Keyboard that is nice to type on i3 CPU performance level minimum (I like to hoarde browser tabs) Graphics performance good enough to comfortably play League of Legends at 1280x720 lowest settings at 70FPS minimum (not a big deal though) Decent build quality I couldn't care less about storage as I'll get an 128GB SSD for it. Thanks for any suggestions you guys have, hope this thread doesn't seem stupid and annoying like those cringeworthy youtube comments about whether people's builds are good enough for minecraft. I only ask this because the state of shopping for laptops in Australia is horrendous and incredibly time consuming at best.
  10. I have a Dell Inspiron One 2020 with an Intel Pentium G2030T with integrated graphics and 4 GB of RAM (the built-in display is around 900p). Will I be able to run Rocket League, Cities: Skylines, and SimCity? I can run Minecraft at around 20-40 FPS while on Mineplex, and I can run Sims 4 at around 60 FPS with V-Sync on the lowest graphics settings (I tried to run Sims 4 on ultra settings one time and got an incredible 7 FPS).
  11. So my friend is looking to buy a new laptop in sometime soon and she wants some suggestions. I'm honestly don't know what to suggest because I'm limited in laptop models knowledge so may someone suggest us with some possibilities Here are some stuff she is planning on: She is going to be a fashion designer (can run adobe softwares, maybe a bigger screen) She plays LoL and DotA 2, so the laptop should be able to at least be able to run them at higher than 30fps She will prefer it to be less than 3kg (6.6 pounds) Budget is around $1,300 Not too flashy, her parents don't want to get her a gaming laptop Probably prefer windows
  12. Hey Can someone help me to find a laptop for light gaming and good battery life (6 hours +) for around £400? I want to play games like Sims 4 at medium settings 30 fps + and screen size 15 inch or more. Just need it for work and casual gaming. The cheaper the better. Thanks
  13. Hey everyone! So I have something that I would like to get your opinion on. For the last couple of weeks, I've really been entertaining the idea of building my own PC. I've picked out the parts and everything, all I have to do is order it and put the damn thing together. But the thing is that I'm not a big gamer. I love to game on consoles, specifically playstation, but I'm not a bg PC gamer. There are a few games that intrigue me but for the most part, most of the gaming that I will be doing is going to be on the playstation. So I guess my questions is this: Is building a PC worth it??? Part of me says that it is a waste of money for what I will be using it for which is light gaming, movies, wordprocessing (and hopefully programming for school). But another part of me says that it is worth it because it's a good learning experience, I'll probably have that computer for a very long time, and it's fun. I guess I'm just kind of confused. haha I know, first world problems. But if you guys could give me your opinons I would really appreciate it.
  14. So, I have seen a lot of "ONLY COMPETITIVE" or "NEED EXPERIENCE" or "ONLY THIS GAME" posts, and haven't seen many (if any) posts like this, so I feel like throwing out my info for any casual gamers who might want to play a game or two with me. ***Note, I am CASUAL about gaming, mostly because I kinda suck at everything. Don't expect me to be amazing at anything we play together*** -Steam: zeetovw -Skype: zeetov -Minecraft: Felidore -League of Legends: Ecanthus or Felidore, depends on my mood If you would like to know, I am a Junior in high school, and I'd like to see people at least in high school, but I may play with someone younger if they can be mature. "Too old" only exists if you portray yourself as the creep from down the road. In general, high school to college would be nice, but like I said, any age is okay if you are a good person. Feel free to leave any of your info in the comments, I'd be happy to see it. And if you want to play a game I don't have, just message me on Skype or Steam. I may buy it because why not. Have a good day!
  15. BUDGET: ~$500 USD (somewhat flexible) USE CASE: in order of priority - productivity, light/casual gaming, media consumption I should start by saying I did read the "how to choose a monitor" pinned topic, however I found it pretty overwhelming. I still don't really know how to start narrowing down options for what I am looking for. Basically, like the title says, I am looking for a display ( or maybe two cheaper displays?) that provides a good productivity and media consumption experience but also performs reasonably well for casual gaming. Some context: I am comp sci college student in the process of building my first PC with help from the "New Builds and Planning" subforum. Because of my major, I will likely spend a lot of time reading and writing text (code) on my computer, so I want a display that minimizes eye strain over time. I have found that displays with high resolutions, high contrast, and low light leakage are best for this purpose, especially when it comes to text. If this were my only requirement, I would just start looking at high res and/or OLED displays. In addition to this, though, I want to start getting into more casual gaming once I don't have to do it on my laptop. To this end, I don't really want to buy a productivity display that will cripple my gaming experience. Given this context, I think my main questions are as follows: Am I looking for a 'holy grail' monitor that just doesn't exist, at least in my budget? Am I better off looking for two different, more specialized monitors, each at a lower price? If I just focus on getting a solid productivity monitor, can I still expect to get a reasonably good casual gaming experience? In case it helps, here is the current working parts list for my PC. This isn't necessarily all locked in, but the final build will likely be very close to this. Just to be clear, I have never shopped for a monitor before, and I am relatively new to the forum. I will do my best to learn as I go, but I will probably still ask some dumb questions, so patience is always appreciated. Finally, thank you to everyone who takes the time respond, every bit of advice helps.
