Hello everyone, I am new to the forum :) My question is: what would be the beast way to compress about 6 TB of pdfs (about 500,000 pdf files)? The main goal is to make an archive of my pdf collection I've been working on for about 10 years. I would like it to take up the least amount of space. That way I can make backups on Mdisks, without using too many disks. Also to use fewer micro SD cards to carry with me. This is the last step of my project. I have used: Filestar to convert nonpdf files to pdf format, and Adobe to compress multiple pdfs at a time. This process is still kind of slow and would probably take about 1-2 years time to do between family and work life. My goal would be to find an automated process or program that could run continuously and conpress pdf files withing files, idealy without having to select each and Would there be anyone who offers a service to do this? Anyone have any ideas what software or methods to use?

So I have almost 400gb of video files on my drive and I really don't feel like putting the effort in and sorting through everything. At least for now. So I'm looking for a way to archive the files storage efficient preferably without a loss in quality. And there gotta be a way to at least save some space since I have quite a lost of 5gig 15 min mp4 files lying around. What would you recommend for saving some space in terms of video format or archiving method?

I am currently archiving and sorting old files. I often have files twice, one in PDF format, one in Word format (.docx). It is the result of writing a document in word, but sharing it later on via E-Mail and creating a PDF version for that. I won´t be editing nearly any of the documents, so is there any benefit in keeping the Word Version?

I don't really know what category this belongs in. Basically, I have kept the last 12 or so years of my video work on a 10TB WD Red hard drive, and that drive is almost full. I am not that familiar with 7-Zip when it comes to compressing things down to a smaller file size for archivel storage. I also know that compressing files down can reduce the quality of a video down, at least that's what I was under the impression of unless the tech has changed. Could someone give some suggested settings for using 7-Zip to compress videos down for long term archive and when I go to uncompress it for needing to use it, is there a way to recover the quality after compression? Any well explained tutorial or settings that even Linus himself has used would be appreciated greatly!

I'm wanting to get an LTO drive to allow me to offload large amounts of Video file at a time for archival purposes and free up some space on my HDDs which. I seem to be coming across conflicting information in my research and wondered if anyone had any experience or insight into how the SAS protocol works and how it could be used for my purposes. Ideally I would like to get an LTO5 Drive and internally mount it to a Case with a 5.25" bay (I have an old Antec case which should do fine for this). The drive seems to have an SFF 8484 connector (which I believe is a backplane connector for when the drive is installed in a server/autoloader). I am struggling to find a suitable HBA to connect it to, I had found an LSI 6Gbps SAS HBA 9200-8i that looks to have a pair of SFF 8087 connectors and thought that an adapter from 8484 - 8087 would allow the drive to be detected and functional, but the sellers I have asked seem not to be sure. One also mentioned that they doubted that the HBA would be detected by the PC's Bios...but gave no reason as to why...is there something I'm missing here? I know that using (particularly older) LTO drives isn't exactly easy in Windows, but I do have access to an older Mac Pro if that makes more sense or of course am happy to run Linux on the final build of the LTO backup PC. Likewise I have found out that there needs to be sufficient air flow to keep the LTO Drive iself and possibly the HBA cool enough to operate. Any help would be amazing! Thanks

Hi, This may sound a bit weird and semi-bizarre but i'm hoping to start a process of VHS to DVD for my families VHS tapes. at the moment i have the Converter on the way already but i'm hoping to do a Super VHS Cassette player for the playback and was wondering, to those who may specialize in that here, if it's possible to play back VHS Tapes on a S-VHS player i know you can't do it the other way around due to the higher quality but i just want to make sure before i go and get something i won't need.

Hi LTT forum, I had recently at school a lesson about Facebook. That guy said that facebook is recording everything you do. FB posts, Instagram posts, sites that you visit that has a Facebook link, private messages in messenger,.. etc So I went as soon as possible online to search for my personal Facebook archive. and I found it and literally everything is there! I don't think a lot of people know this.. so a just wanted to let you know ? (I found it here: http://www.zdnet.be/article/127327/download-heel-je-facebook-geschiedenis/ )

Just a small though; If you archive stuff to an external HDD just once, turn off the HDD. And only turn it on when you want to add data. Will this expand the life of the HDD?

I'm planing of building or buying a backup system, I'm not sure what I want. I can't have a rack in my apartment due to space. I want a system that automatically checks SMART status of the HDD. I want it to be accessible only in my LAN, for now I'm thinking of some synology NAS with RAID 1. What are your opinions?

Crashplan has decided that it is pulling out of home backup solutions. This really throws a spanner in my backup solution. My current solution was to backup my devices to a local drive on my server and then back the server up to crashplan central. This offered great protection for my devices and ok protection for the important files on my server. Now I'm at a loss as where to look next. I would continue on with the crashplan small business plan but they have got rid of the computer to computer backups so I'm looking for a new solution. Anyone have any advice on where to look to get unlimited cloud backup storage that will work with windows server 2016. Also if anyone has a good backup program that will work cross platform to backup my data from my devices (windows/mac/ubuntu) to my server that would be great. Currently I am playing with the server essentials backup service for my windows devices but this will only work on my home network. Crashplan was great because I could backup to my server remotely. I have about 15TB of data that needs to be backed up. (I am looking into tape archiving for some stuff but will still need a lot of this backed up to the cloud) So I guess what I want to know is: 1. PC to PC backup software that will work cross platform (preferably remotely too) 2. Cloud backup solution (unlimited storage, works on server 2016) Any help appreciated, thanks

I looked at a techquickie episode from a year ago recently and it discussed about tape drives and their evolution since the 50's. But THEN, Luke dropped the BOMB. He said that SONY had recently developped a tape drive that could hold a total of 185 TERABYTES!!!! And now,i just looked up at the UNBOXING CANADA'S BIGGEST SUPERCOMPUTER video and in the video,Linus droped the NUKE : there was a rack that had PETABYTES OF STORAGE IN LESS THAN A PETABYTE ARCHIVE SERVER ROOM FULL OF DRIVES!!! Now,the thing is : it would be fun if the LTT or LMG team would do a video about it that showed how to GET and operate one and how to make it into a home archive device. I mean think of it!! All that 4k to any kind of K's uncompressed footage you want, those 4k UHD HDR movies, those 80GB games backups, you could finally put all of it on drives that have finally enough space for all of it!!! And even better if you could show a way to put it all on USB Type C 3.1 10 GB/S , Gbit ethernet or any way you see fit to make that into a viable long term archive/backup solution for the consumer wether prosumer or the average one. Also, they read at speeds of 140 mb/s ,wich would be viable for read speeds for an archive drive!!! Also, they are about as big at your usual hard drive!!! P.S ; One other thing: it's not the 90's anymore, tape drives are MUCH more performant than back in the days Please, for the love of Tech god,do a howto video or a HOLY SH*T video on how to do all of this maybe in the future. UPDATE!!! : Tape drives can actually read to up to 240 Megabytes per second depending on the hardware as of 2017!!! Update 2!!! : Tape drive in action!!!

Hello, like many others i record gaming videos as a hobby. Many things i learned from just looking them up, but there is one thing i don't find much information about. How to archive your projects without loosing too much quality or disk space. Right now i record my gameplay with OBS and throw it, sometimes with footage from my Canon 650d, into premiere CS 6, editing it and exporting it into lagarith lossless for Handbreak encoding. All my videos are 1080p 60fps. Now i would like to safe them in high quality in case i want to do a best of in the future, or need to reupload a video. I'm considering to use a high bitrate/ CRF version of h.264 to keep a small filesize. I already experimented with DNxHD/ DNxHR and the files are deffinetly getting too big to handle. Does anyone have experience with this kind of archiving and can suggest some settings to start on? Or even another free codec i should consider?

I am in the process of converting a bunch of old video camera tapes to digital format. VHS -> DV file -> m4v -> ??? I have no problem storing the files locally, and I will do that as a backup to wherever else I put my files. Ideally, I would like to store them in a way that is more accessible, shareable, and searchable. My goal is to have clips from the videos prepared with keywords that would ultimately lead to finding a desired event or clip in the archive. I would also like to be able to access it from the internet and share it in a way so that other family members can search and find clips in the archive. I first thought about about using YouTube. It has search and keyword tagging, but I really don't want to make all my videos public. If the videos are made private or unlisted, people can't use the search function. I maybe thought about using Vimeo or another service like that, but I assume I would run into similar road blocks. I know Adobe Lightroom has a cataloging feature but it's not super acccesible for people and I don't want to have to pay for creative cloud. Other thoughts: -iCloud Drive, limitations are accessibility but it's easy to set up, forget and there is an iOS app available with OSX compatible tag search. -Host a file server -??? If anybody has some ideas of how to approach this or if any of you have dealt with this before, some help would be much appreciated.

It's been a while since I last been on here, but I'm glad to be back! I've saved ALL phone/laptop/PC data that I've accumulated over the past 9 years or so, going from various hard drives to cloud services and such along the way. I'm at about 659GB of total data in the cluster of folders and files, and I'm wondering if there's a better option to hold data in a strictly archival setting. I won't be connecting the device unless a backup is being made or a transfer or new files to be added. Are there safe and reliable hard drive versions that won't die on me and lose all my data? I'm getting kind of tired having devices die on me, and I can't risk losing it on a cloud service if I miss a payment. The price of the HDD can range anywhere: I don't care, I just need my data to be safe. This data means a lot to me, but that goes without saying. I'd appreciate any guidance on this!

So I am working at company that have alot of video files on a server. We are all working on Mac machines. And i'm not 100% sure what is in the server rack. For me it is just a tall locked HP box that makes noise in the corner. The problem we are having and I will try to find the first steps to solve is how do we make the over 50TB of video searchable? Is there a software, tool or do we need someone to program for us. We have digitalized old tapes and dvds and all files are named with Date - Order - Hwo made it - "Working title". We still make all from 5 to 20 videos every day. And if we cold tag them so they are searchable later. And have a tool to do face and/or object recognition and try to make more searchable tags for the entire archive of videos that would be cool. (And yes we want one persone i full time job to do the archive job and double chek that things get taged corect. But he would need a tool to help him since it more than 4 years of continuous video) Any tips on what to start searching for. What to ask when talking with experts. Or what a database tool like we need is called. Becaouse for 2 weeks i have only found Imdb clones and database of journalists and stock videos on all my google-searches.

... or any other format which is either cheaper or reliable. Looking to archive my NAS data to a longer term format, so I can free up space on the NAS. So far I was looking at an expansion enclosure for the NAS which I've been pricing up comes to multiple of thousands of pounds. In my mind that isn't ideal because one, that's a lot of money, and two there will be projects on there that we just haven't touched in about 5 years. And for now the older projects will be going onto the tape/other formats, and in the future we will look at expanding through the NAS format. We also had the idea of buying a couple 4Tb external hard drive for about £100 and doing that, but I think the tape/cd option would be better. When it comes to tape archiving I have no idea what I'm looking for so and a google search showed me a million different things which confused me even more. I need some help with: 1. Which format to use. 2. What hardware to buy. 3. A tutorial on how to start copying to the archive format. I think I know what kind of tape to use from watching one of Linus' videos, but as the writable unit. No idea. I hope someone can help! Thanks

MR. TechTips, So I’m a small business owner and I have to keep a copy of emails and other records. Thankfully I can scan paper docs to PDF. Then con to this is I have a lot of data to sort or categorize but where to store it? my question is for long term storage what should I do? After 6 months or a year for taxes...I really don’t need to look at it unless I need to pull up an old contract or communication thread. should I place it on an external SSD, external Hdd - traditional plater style ( I like LaCie) or a USB Key like Corsair survivors which I love for travel or dvd or cd. my concern then is how long is the data good for or what’s the life span of the storage device. I have heard cds and DVD’s fail after a number of years depending on quality. USB keys need to be plugged in and data copied on and off the device and may have so many read writes and similar with hard drives, I have heard platers may be better than ssd. unfortunately I can’t afford the digital micro fish system... so what is the best solution? the assumption is to archive place on a shelf, box or safety deposit box and only access to update or store more data or review the occasional doc. Though it may be better to have a USB key or drive for each year. Really just need for audit or lawsuits cya purpose. I have already scanned several filing cabinets worth of docs. so what is the best log term storage media and what maintenance is needed? Most of this does not need to be on or in the cloud for security purposes. thanks for the help.

Looking for an external harddrive to back up all my data, but the reviews for these drives all look bad and leave me confused as to what to go for. I have a 4 tb hdd and a 128ssd along with some more storage I want to back up. So I was looking at these but some say their smr with bad write speeds and no reliability. Hey guys. Can I get any help for getting a storage solution for media production studio? Our current setup: People working off there SSD for active project. Storing our "archive" data in some random hard drive. Very hard to find past project, sometimes some people don't even put all the file they need to use in one single sub-folder. Projects including photo and video. We have an active Google Drive for deliver project use, and acting kinda like a backup solution, but not very effectively. What we want to achieve is: Have a place to store all the project file together, archive is good enough. We don't need to work off the server (no budget at this moment) Easy access via either Ethernet cable or wifi. Easy to setup (all of us are not that good at playing with network stuff) It would be best if it has more than 30-50Tb of usable storage space. Should I just go for a pre-build Synology nas and put some drives into it? I feel like we would like to spend around 2k-2.5k CAD before tax for this solution, but if needed more money, getting up to 3k is still tolerable. If possible, can I get a part list? Thanks so much guys.

I'm looking for a solution to 'Unify' the mess of old External HDD's I've collected over the years. At first I was thinking of just buying two 8TB external Seagate Expansions, or some other Archive style HDD and transfering all my old data to one of the new drives, while having the other for incoming data to be stored, but then I discovered I could possibly use a 4 bay-Enclosure and just swap the drives from their old Miscellaneous stock cases to one easy to access unit. The data I have is from my "Noob" years. It's organised by years/clients... Personal/School... whatever. It's a mess I plan on sometime reorganising in the future, but for now Id just prefer to have a neat package than to have to deal with storing multiple, oddly shaped enclosures and power adapters. Does anyone have experience dealing with this? What would be the smartest solution? An expensive NAS is out the question for me right now.

Any recomendations for a good software that can read a drive and make a list of the files on that drive. I want to scan my archive/backup drives and make a list of wich files are on wich HDD. Thanks!
