Recently built myself a water cooled 1060 i7 6700 k 32 GB unfortunately, for my school program I need a laptop. I've been on Kijiji and I have three options a straight trade for a 970m 4K 6700 HQ MSI ghost Pro A $300 train ride and straight trade for an Alienware 17 980m with 4K, 6820HK and 32 gigs of RAM Or a two hour car ride plus $500 4 on MSI 1070 6700 HQ laptop I'm strapped for cash but I know the 1070 is the best performer graphically is it worth it for first or second year CAD work in an architecture program? Is the lighter MSI laptops 4 pound weight a big enough difference? Open to suggestions

Hello, My new ASRock 970M Pro3 MOBO won't post. I have checked all the connectors with the PSU and everything is in place (24 pin mobo and 8 pin cpu power). I tried switching ram slots (currently installed as in manual) (RAM also compatible with mobo). I have a gtx 950 also installed because the mobo doesn't have on board graphics. I don't have any hard drives or other things installed. Any ideas? I'm trying to get the MOBO to post at least - all it does is spin the cpu fan to 100% and that's all

I want to get a new laptop so that i can game on and get some work done on and im kind of stuck because its so hard to compare the 900 series with the the new 1000 series. The first laptop that i may want to buy is an alienware 17 r3 which has a i7-6700hq, 970m 3gb ggdr5, 16 gb of ram, 256gb ssd, 1tb hdd (its used btw so its going to be around 800 dollars) or the new dell inspiron 15 7000 series laptop. Everyone that i have seen kinda says that the 1050ti is better than the 970m but idk. help me out a bit lol

Hey, i want to buy a notebook, new or second hand doesn't matter as long it's around 1300 dollars. So here are some preferences 17 inch, touch screen, and a gtx 1060 or maybe 970m if it's worth it. I was looking at razer blade with 970m 6 gb at around 1100 or even 1000 on craigslist, but not sure if 970m is worth it over a 1060 at this buget. Also ,doing some research i found out that there aren't so many 17 inch with 1060. So, can you please give me some recomandations. I do programming, gaming, working in game engines .

So I have a Sager/Clevo P770ZM and i want to upgrade the GPU. I know it uses MXM 3.0b GPUs. Right now I have a quadro k1100m and want to upgrade to a 970m. Would I still be able to use the bracket for the k1100m on the 970m? Or do I need a new one?

I'm looking for a Razer Blade with a 970m late 2016 or early 2017, I need something 1500 or under. I would also like a 6th gen cpu.

Hi, hopefully this counts as being a build-log, I mean I did put fans on a thing so it's at least ready for /r/techsupportmacgyver. If this is the wrong section I guess delete it or move it or something, you wont hurt my feelings or nothing. So, I managed to score a mid 2016 Razer Blade 14 (6GB 970m) in a Newegg Open Box sale for just over $1000, and considering similar machines are selling on ebay in worse condition for 1200-1400 I think I lucked out. Anyways, everyone knows these things have some cooling issues and fan noise issues, I haven't had much for cooling issues but I can't help wanting to add fans to everything. I already had this sick laptop desk mount, it's got some breathing holes so I figured why not add some fans? I found some USB powered fans off Amazon for cheap ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJ2J2K0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) The quality is honestly way better than I expected, their not silent but running at only a max of 5v I never really hear them Here's how they look from the top. Couldn't seem to get my phone to focus correctly, and yes I did clean up the cables after this. You can see there is a decent gap for airflow underneath. I feel like it looks pretty clean like this. I didn't really take any baseline readings but after this I ran Heaven Benchmark for around 20mins while watching some twitch streams to put a good load on the system. CPU got to 65C, GPU got to 79C with +135 on the core and +300 on the memory. CPU was undervolted 0.165v. Fans still get extremely loud but I can't hear them too much with my window fan or air conditioner running anyway so I wasn't too bothered. Oh yeah, ambient temps were around ~70F (21C).

Hey guys, i have a little nut to crack... and... i think it's stupid on top too...but, doesnt asks, doesnt get ^^ So i'd have a spare 1060 and my dad has Alienware 15 with 970m which could use the upgrade. The question is, will it fit... I noticed that the clevo has a bit different PCB with what looks like aditional power connecter, https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/10-nvidia-gtx-1060-6gb-mxm-clevo.html then the 970m. https://store.alezka.com/en/laptop-gpus/4-gtx-970m.html it's most def. stupid question but, doesnt asks, doesnt gets ^^ And it might be easier to try to swap with a bit of DIY, then to try to sell it and buy another... Cheers

In a dilemma and I need your help. I don't laptop game much anymore, but I do photo and video edit a lot so i7 is a must. I think an older laptop with a 970M is my best choice, am I crazy? Example of choices are (but not limited to) Crappish chassis and screen, no SSD, lower RAM but 1060 3gb Graphics MSI GP62MVR Leopard Pro 15.6 Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 8 GB Memory 1 TB HDD https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154649 or something like this Premium chassis, light weight, and nvme boot drive but 970M MSI GS40 PHANTOM 14.0" Intel Core i7 6th Gen 6700HQ NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 16 GB Memory 128 GB SSD 1 TB HDD https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154425

Searched far and wide with no solution found yet. Laptop is an MSI GT60 Dominator Pro 3k running Windows 10. It had an 880m, which died, so I purchased a 970m. After a couple heatsink mods, I fired things up and windows recognized the new card with no issues. Once I started trying to test and game on the card, one main issue popped up. The laptop isn't switching to the 970, but seemingly only with Steam games. It also wouldn't switch to the 970 when attempting to run Furmark. The laptop DOES use the 970 with the Epic Launcher, and those games run very smooth. Here's a list of what the internet has suggested and I've tried. -Attempted to make changes in the BIOS, but it's a bare-bones American Megatrends version from 2012, (MSI stopped support for my laptop pretty soon after release), and doesn't list any chipsets. -Used DDU in safe mode with both NVIDIA and Intel gpus, uninstalled and reinstalled both drivers, but Steam games still only use the igpu. -changed multiple settings within NVIDIA Control Panel to use the 970m as the global card. Also assigned specific .exe's to use the 970m. -tried right-clicking game .exe's and selecting "launch with NVIDIA Gpu" option from the contextual menus. Still uses igpu. -even tried disabling the igpu in device manager, (which I know is not recommended), to see if I could force the system to use the 970m for these games. This enabled Furmark to use the 970m for benchmarking, but Steam games either failed to launch OR in one case still used the igpu, (witcher 2 launched on igpu even with it disabled). -changed settings in the igpu control panel, no change in behavior. It should also be noted that the Epic launcher and games running through it DO show up in the NVIDIA activity monitor. Nothing from STEAM, or Steam itself, have ever showed up in the monitor. Any help or advice? All I can think to try at this point is a windows reinstall and hope that somehow corrects the issue. Thanks to all who made it through this post!

Hello! I am getting a GTX 970M in the mail next month, and was hoping to upgrade my current GPU in my Alienware M17xR4 (660M) to the newer 970M. I have a couple questions as to how I am going to make this work properly though, as I have read threads around the internet say that the 900 series cards were made compatible with the M17xR4 BOIS and Nvidia Drivers a while back, and threads that state a modded BIOS and config file is necessary. So what gives? Additionally, what would be the correct thermal pad width, and placement on a 970M card? I am assuming the card won't ship with new pads, however I may be wrong. Thanks for the help!

I just made a Geforce experience account, and now it is barely going above 30fps on low settings. I'm really sorry if it isn't in the right topic but i have a 970m that as i mentioned was running fine. Please help as i dont know what to do.

So, a few minutes ago I was on Rainbow Six Siege, and turned my graphics settings to very high, which didn't raise any red flags at first. Got into a match, lagging at 15-ish FPS, then my laptop shutdown and when I came back to turn the settings down and play normally, I was at 0-2 FPS. Couldn't even load in, so I tried updating my drivers through GeForce Experience and also from the NVIDIA website. I went to device manager, and it shows a little ! symbol. Going to it's properties and device status, I get "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I also only see one GPU under device manager, and can no longer open NVIDIA Control Panel. Did I just kill my GPU? I don't think I did because I'm still writing this on my laptop, but I have no idea how to fix it. I've already tried disabling, updating drivers, and restarting. Here's my specs, if it helps: Aorus X7 Pro i7-4870HQ GTX 970M x2 in SLI (3GB+3GB) 16GB DDR3-1366Mhz 250GB+250GB RAID 0 SSD 1TB 7200RPM HDD

So first off I'm going to say that I'm 100% new to really making threads and such. I am completely new to this site sooo... As to some background about this laptop, I can say that I am not the original owner. I was given this laptop for free by my sister's roommate because it was broken. I just gave it a clean install of Windows 10 and I thought the laptop was working fine... until this happened. Specs: GL502VT Intel i7-6700HQ Nvidia GTX 970m 16GB DDR4 SODIMM The issue: So mainly what happens is whenever my I update my GPU past a certain point, anything that access my GPU runs very slowly. The GL502VT being an Optimus forcefully enabled laptop, it doesn't seem like much of an issue, but it is. Almost every app uses the GPU now-a-days in Windows 10 and it takes a while before it gives up and uses the iGPU or something like that. How I figured out: Obviously, I tried to update the driver. When I made the clean install of Windows it seemed to be working fine. As anything the first person would try to do after either testing some games or right after they install the OS, they try to update the driver. I tried to update the driver and like I said, the laptop became extremely unresponsive and such. I just downgraded the driver and mainly thought about it. Why it's an issue: If your ASUS that's reading this (which this is similar to what they said) is "Why don't you just use the driver we provide" and to that I say "incompatibilities". I can't do encode videos in VP9 with my GPU using an old driver (Or with hardware acceleration on my CPU because that came on 7th gen Intel processors). Along with that, some games don't support older drivers (Minecraft Bedrock Edition just crashes). Lastly, I can't use my GPU as encoding either for videos, OBS crashes whenever I try to use my GPU for encoding. How I noticed it again: I probably noticed this again when I updated Windows 10 to either RS3 or RS4. I believe that in both of the updates it updated my GPU's driver because it was it was out of date. This would've been fine except for the fact that (obviously) this driver doesn't work with my laptop. What have I done: I've tried a bunch of drivers, I've tried to change my vBIOS to both a custom one and my backup, I don't believe either actually got written to my EEPROM. I'm not sure what all has happened to this GPU because I'm not the original owner, but it is a good laptop spec wise if it did work. Conclusion: I'm honestly not sure what else I'm missing or what I should try next. I have tried to contact both ASUS and Nvidia and neither of them have helped me get closer to a fully working laptop. Thanks for reading my first attempt at starting a forum thread. If you know more about this then me, I would love your help. -Funniray

My Asus gl502 has a motherboard problem that requires a full replacement. My model has the gtx 970m and 6700hq on the motherboard, but the exact replacement would cost around 500 dollars, but for 600 I could get a motherboard with a 980m and the same processor. Would I need an upgraded power supply to run the GPU or would it be fine with the power adapter that comes with the 970m model (100-240V at 2.34A)

Hi, so i recently put liquid metla on my 970m in my msi ge72 2qf. I also have a cooling pad under it so don't you dare tell me don't oc a laptop it will get too hot. So i found this modded asus 970m vbios that unlocks the sliders but doesn't change any voltage or clocks i think. I've attached my original msi vbios and the asus one i downloaded which came from this site: http://voltground.com/haven/threads/4/ I don't think it's going to fry anything but if there are any experts here could one of you take a look at them and see if it will be ok? Also I have a small question about modding bioses. How do people actually unlock these sliders and change voltages? I have been looking through maxwell bios tweaker 2 and haven't seen any settings that just enable sliders, some settings are blanked out on the original and not on the modded one. So I bought No Man's Sky on Steam after watching some people stream the game on PS4. I was hoping for a good port, but unfortunately the game suffers from severe frame rate drops and also a few bugs here and there. I am playing the game on my MSI GE62 Apache Pro-239 which is rocking a 970m and i7-6700HQ and 16 GB of ram. (I upgraded from 12 to 16 GB of ram) In the video I show the settings I'm running at. I cranked them down after getting nauseous the first time I opened the game. Everything is pretty much on low. I'm getting an average of 50-60 FPS with dips as low as 9 FPS. The game is playable, but the drops in performance and stuttering can get annoying. Check out the video here. Overall, I've played about an hour of the game. My initial thoughts are: damn they need to patch this, but for real its fun and you get that same feeling you got when you first started MineCraft. I will be posting some more videos on No Man's Sky with some initial thoughts and updates when they decide to hopefully fix the game to make it more stable. That's all for tonight. Let me know if you guys want to know more about No Man's Sky performance on my laptop and be sure to like and subscribe if you like the video and want to see more!

I noticed that my Alienware 15 R2 that contains a 970M and 16 GB of ram is not using it's graphics card in games like Star Citizen ( Runs on the Crysis Engine ). For some reason if I plug my laptop into a monitor it will start using the graphics card except maybe for the Steam VR Test where the test is saying my graphics card is "Intel Graphics 530". Is there a better way to force the graphics card to work in games that it's not working in?

Hi all, So I am having this dilemma and I’m not sure what to do. I currently own the hardware as described below. These devices are great for my work as Visual designer. It surprised me that a surprisingly large amount of games can be played on the 3440x1440 resolution using this laptop. Unfortunately a game like Battlefield 4 is basically unplayable with this configuration. What do you think I should do to make games such as BF4 playable at 3440x1440 or at least 2560x1080? Laptop - MSI Ghost Pro GS60 4k Thunderbolt 3 GTX Monitor - Dell U3415w 21:9 3440x1440 I am thinking of three solutions: eGPU custom build What configuration? Can I simply copy a setup like Razer Core Is there a well documented guide on how to do this? How much does this cost? Is it guaranteed that this will work? eGPU like Razer Core Desktop PC What do you think I should do? Has any of you succesfully built a well working eGPU? Thanks in advance!
