My dell xps 15 (9550) wont turn on, only the power button light turns on for 3 seconds & then turns off. This has happened before & i would simply remove battery, ram , storage etc do some cleaning and put everything back on and somehow it would turn on. Also if the LCD testing is working fine, does that mean my motherboard is fine?

Hello! I consider myself to be tech savvy but I just cannot get over this issue. My Dell XPS 9550 laptop is virtually freezing when full screening a youtube video that is either 360p or 720p, but only in chrome. So what happens is when i full screen a video and the timeline/title overlay disappear, the screen goes black, the audio keeps playing, then the audio cuts off, then i get an image of the video itself, screen goes black, audio keeps playing and rinse and repeat. ANY overlay fixes this issue - even controlling windows' volume with the function keys and the volume overlay comes up - the video comes back up. This issue is not present in Microsoft Edge. I have tried most of the things - Updating Windows, Updating CPU graphics drivers, Updating GPU drivers, Updating System Drivers, Updating Windows, Running Chrome with hardware accell. disabled - this freezed my pc entirely, Contacted Dell - they were "meh, we dont know", Tried looking through the Nvidia Control Panel and changed every setting, Tried going to the Intel CP and checked every setting there as well, Tried setting the graphics renderer to either only integrated or only dedicated, tried running the Balanced mode in different configurations, Tried activating the High Performace mode, Tried updating Chrome, Tried googling the issue, Tried turning off extensions/trying incognito mode. This issue occurs only when on battery, when the machine is plugged in the issue is not present. When i plug in the power whilst the issue is happening, it does not fix it, but when i plug off the power whilst watching a video, it immediately freezes. If anyone has some weird wizard knowledge and is able to provide some insight as to what might be causing this.. i will officially procraim him a god. Thanks in advance!

Hi All, Does anyone here have any real-world experience with the new Dell TB16 Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Specifically the 240W version and how reliable it is at powering a Dell XPS 15 9550 as the prospect of powering my laptop whilst connecting to all my peripherals simultaneously via a single cable is extremely enticing, particularly as my laptop is my daily driver that I take with me everywhere. I read some horrifying reviews about the TB15 some months back and decided to hold off until Dell got their act together, however I'm finding it quite difficult to find any reliable reviews of this function on the web. If anyone with actual experience in using the TB16 could provide some insights I'd very much appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Lloyd

Hello o/ So I bought a dell xps 15 9550. It's the i7 6700HQ version with a gtx 960m. I don't plan on gaming but would like to extend the desktop to an external 2560x1600 display (30hz isnt a deal breaker but 55-60hz is preferable). Based on what I have read the iGPU (HD 530) can run the resolution, it is running UHD (3840x2160) on the laptop display after all. The HDMI port can run it, I have also tried using a usb-c >> hdmi 1.4 adapter. And yes my cable is compatible with the res. I have tried setting a custom resolution via the intel utility but get "the custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity". I have tried installing the default intel drivers but they refuse to install (because dell ones block it). I have tried uninstalling and deleting current drivers and then installing the default intel ones but the system simply doesn't recognize the presence of the iGPU anymore. I don't think the dGPU (gtx 960m) can request access to the port, I could be wrong but I think the request has to come from the dongle / port. I know we can make this work, please help me. Exact system specs: Laptop - DELL XPS 15 9550: i7 6700HQ @ 2.6ghz I think. Intel HD 530. gtx 970m 2gb. 1tb pcie ssd. 32gb ram. UHD 3840x2160 60hz touchscreen display. Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C connector). External Monitor - DELL 3007WFP: 2560x1600 @ 60hz. DVI-D only. Dongle - AUKEY usb c hub: monitors with HDMI port, it also can support 4K*2K/30HZ HD resolution. NOT A THUNDERBOLT HUB; THIS IS USB-C @ - 5Gbps. I tried dongle with nothing but display plugged in to ensure maximum bandwidth. Cable - World of Data: 1m HDMI to DVI cable. UHD compatible. I also tried a cable which I know from experience is capable of driving the resolution.

i got a dell xps 15 9550 refurbished from ebay a few months ago. It's worked perfectly fine for me with one exception: when i first open the lid or wake up the screen after it has been off for a while, the colors are all washed out and horrible looking, but slowly over the course of 5 or so mins, the color returns to normal and the display looks amazing again. I'm just curious what could be causing this issue, and if there is anything reasonable i could do to fix it. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the nvidia and intel graphics drivers multiple times with no luck. I have the 4k touchscreen model with a gtx 960m if that helps.

Liquid metal cooling laptop in vertical stand
Lloyd posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I have a Dell XPS 15 9550, with an i7-6700HQ & an GTX960M. I'm trying do some gaming (PUBG, Battlefront 2, etc.) and just generally squeeze some more life out of it, however, even after undervolting the CPU by 140mW, repasting the CPU/GPU and running the games at their lowest settings I still get temps of over 85°C on the GPU under full load, causing both the CPU & GPU to eventually downclock. In addition, I typically use the laptop closed in a vertical stand, connected to a Dell TB16. I have tried leaving the laptop open during gaming, however this doesn't seem to affect operating temps much, if at all! Assuming I take the proper precautions (i.e liberal application of conformal coating), would the closed/standing/upright position cause any issues with the liquid metal compound? Is there the potential for it to leak out from between the die and copper plate? I apologise if that sounds like a stupid question. Also, I've noticed that the two screw threads connecting the heat sink to the GPU side of the motherboard have broken, so I don't feel there is sufficient contact/pressure between the GPU die and the copper plate. Would this be contributing to the high temps and could it potentially cause problems with the liquid metal compound? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ?- 7 replies

Hi All, I have an XPS 15 9550, which I connect to a TB16 Thunderbolt dock. Every time I shut down the laptop while it is connected to the dock the exit from Windows is very quick, however the fans on the laptop continue to spin for an additional 3-5 minutes before finally stopping. Whenever the laptop is running on its own, having never been connected to the dock, the shutdown and full power off happens very quickly. Would anyone be able to tell me what the issue is here and potentially how to fix it? Thanks, Lloyd

Hi All, I have a Dell XPS 15 9550, equipped with an Intel i7-6700HQ CPU, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD (Samsung PM951 NVMe). In addition, the laptop is connected via Thunderbolt to a Dell TB16 Dock. So everything (monitor, power, peripherals) connects through the dock then passes through the Thunderbolt cable into the system. Occasionally, under normal, everyday use, the laptop will experience significant system lag, meaning the mouse responsiveness will drop and stutter, any keyboard strokes will take a couple of seconds to register, any videos playing will stutter and/or momentarily freeze and any audio (music/video sounds/ system sounds) that is playing will momentarily slow down and stutter. I've had Task Manager open on a couple of occasions that this has happened and I've noticed that the CPU and Disk usage will spike during these moments. Does anyone know what might be causing this and should any of this really be happening on a machine with these kinds of specs? Thanks in advance.

Hey all, I've been tearing my hair out with this laptop. I bought a used Dell XPS 15 9550 from eBay and I cannot get this thing to charge reliably. The AC adapter has to be plugged in juuuuust right for it to charge and it can take upwards of 20 unplugging and replugging attempts sometimes. If it isn't just right, I will see the charging indicator come on for a moment and then go out again. It will power the laptop, but won't charge the battery. I even purchased another OEM power adapter, but that exhibited the same behavior. I have also tried to go the USB-C route. I bought a cheap 87watt adapter and for the first day it was great and charged it perfectly. I went to plug it in again and it powers nothing, Windows will make a system tone indicating something has been plugged into the Thunderbolt port and it knows it, but no power. I tested the adapter on some other usb-c devices, but nothing. It's dead, and I don't know if it is just a cheap piece of Chinese garbage or if the laptop is somehow to blame for it, or some combination of the two. I'm about at my wits end. I'm considering putting it back on eBay and selling it at a loss (I don't want to go through Dell's out of warranty process since I've heard nothing good about their servicing). Does anyone have any experience with this machine? tl;dr: my laptop won't charge, pls halp

A lot of you have undoubtedly heard of the famed XPS line up. Ever since the introduction of the 9550, it's been regarded as the closest to perfection a Windows PC has achieved. However, much to my dismay, this is only the case on paper. I've owned two XPS laptops - a 9550 and a 9560, both with the 4K display option. Spec-wise these are the best laptop-displays on the market when combining the resolution and colour accuracy - only recently met by the new Aero 15 which offers the same 100% Adobe RGB and 4K resolution, however I haven't had any experience with the latter product. I'm mentioning the panel as a focal point now because it's such a trump-card when discusing the laptop and I'll return to it further on. Seeing one of these laptops in a retail environment may be love at first site for a lot of consumers, including myself. After deciding to pick one up, I brought it home only to have the unit not power on whatsoever. I had to return the laptop the next day and replace it - however the replacement unit only had half of the front charging LED light up. I have however kept the unit as I seriously cannot be bothered at this point. Returning to the display, it looks great when you're looking at static content - save from the darker splotches which show up on the sides of the display (it's almost like the opposite of light-bleed, if I could describe it). Moving images are another story - the ghosting is so bad that it strains my eyes simply from dragging around a file explorer window and flipping through animations in the Windows UI... which is a whole other issue I will talk about next. The overall performance is mediocre - navigating Windows feels sluggish and is prone to low-framerates and stutters throughout the OS. Simply alt+windows key-ing into taskview the animation plays at what I'd say it about 12fps and combined with the ghosting, is just horrible. I know I may sound ridiculous for even discusing this, but considering the price point of the device, I think issues like this should be ironed out. I've tested other resolutons - namely 1080p for the exact 4:1 pixel ratio and the navigation is drastically smoother. So essentially, the HD 630 onboard graphics cannot handle 4K properly. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on all of this! Cheers!

Got a dell xps 15 9550 from eBay. Everything works, except the battery connector is broken, so the battery is not showing up. The only thing that seems to be broken on the connector is the plastic housing, but it is not working. Any suggestions on how I can test the connector, or where I can get something that shows me the pinout? If the connector is in fact bad, where could I buy one to replace it? Looks like a fairly easy surface mount replacement.

Hello all! I recently got one of the new Dell XPS 15s the 9550 version. The first thing I did was reinstall windows and I have been experiencing a random blue screen issue. I've tried reinstalling windows several times. The error is as viewed in the windows event viewer is: I originally did not bother to install any dell drivers other than the wireless since this was required to connect to wi-fi. Windows update seemed to fined the rest. I have since installed all dell drivers from their support page. I saw a reference in another post here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/460787-maximus-viii-hero-freezeing-acpi-error/ to a very similar issue and this is really the most information I have been able to find. I updated the BIOS after seeing this and am still experiencing the issue. The only thing I can think of is that I might need to reinstall windows 10 after updating the BIOS but to me that seems like a bit of a long stretch. I tried contacting Dell Support and their suggestion was that I had too many programs installed in windows (all 15 of them). They have sent some dell recovery media my way which has not arrived yet and I'd really rather not have to deal with their bloatware. They told me that the windows media creation tool only makes a partial installation of windows and that I would not be able to activate windows 10 so I don't have high hopes for them actually helping at any point. Had anyone else had issues with this laptop? I'm wondering if it might be a hardware issue with my laptop. Everywhere I look online I find nothing but praise for this laptop and I would say it is prefect minus the bsod issue I'm getting.

I've had the new DELL XPS 15 (9550) for a week or two now and I am pretty unimpressed so I thought I would do a little write up of what irks me about it here and see if there are any other LTT users with this notebook and see if they're having the same issues. The first thing I noticed when I received the notebook was a bright pixel dead center of the screen, I thought that was pretty bad but when I got to googling it I saw that some users were dealing with clusters of dead or bright pixels on their displays so guess I got lucky. The good news is after a really short chat with DELL online chat I had a tech here the next business day who replaced the screen and it's now perfect. The next thing I noticed is the speakers. In my opinion the actual speakers are not that bad for a slim notebook like this they're fairly loud and I think sound good enough for the average user, I would definitely prefer to use headphones though. The issue with my XPS is that the speakers sound terrible due to the rattling that the speakers produce as low as 25% volume. Music with Piano playing sounds horrible and most annoyingly speech is really bad so films & YouTube presenters sound horrible. This can be helped by changing the sound profile from "Maxxsense" to "voice" but that pretty much just makes everything quieter and sound flat. I know this is an issue with the build quality because pressing my palms on either side of the mousepad almost completely eliminates the vibrating sound at 80% Volume and completely removes it below 70% Volume. I saved my biggest issue for last; It doesn't wake from sleep. When I manually put the notebook to sleep I can wake it fine I've never waited more than a few minutes to test this though so maybe there is some ultra-low power mode that it enters after a certain amount of sleep time that is causing the issue. When I leave the notebook for a long time without closing the lid and it enters sleep itself it becomes impossible to wake up without holding down the power button and forcing a shut down and then starting it back up again. To me that is a deal breaker for a notebook as I want it to be ready to go when I need it and obviously can't have it constantly on without killing the battery. Other than those issues it's perfect the display is beautiful (besides the horrible 4K support, seriously? feels like this should be solved by now) it's absolutely silent and it's lightning fast. Unfortunately though the quality control issues have killed it for me and I'm going to be returning it. I will test out a replacement before I go for a complete refund and will update this post if anybody is interested on how that goes but I'm not very hopeful. This was all tested with the latest BIOS & Drivers available for the machine as of the date of this post. Would love to hear from other New XPS 15 owners on what their experiences are!

Here is my current (and old) rig: CPU: AMD Phenom 9550 RAM: 4GB MOBO: mATX Generic HP (Has only PCIe 1.0x16 ) GPU: 8800 GTS PSU: Corsair CX430w I was wondering if I would be able to throw in a AMD Radeon 7850 and not have any bottleneck on the GPU? If there would be a large bottleneck, what would be a good GPU to get? The reason I ask about a 7850 is because they can be found for a decent price and have a decent amount of performance that I dont believe would be bottlenecked by the CPU. I saw the scrapyard build that Linus and Luke recently did and Linus used a 7850 with a Q6600 which my resaerch says isnt much different from the Phenom 9550. Thanks in advance!
