He told me he wants a pc for 4k videoediting. The budget is 1200CHF but I think that is unrealistic. Thus far I would get a Ryzen 7, 16gb RAM, NVMe boot drive and a big SATA SSD for the Videofiles like 1 or 2 TB. But the GPU, well that is a different story. I'm thinking he just needs to harvest some kidneys to pay for them, 1000CHF for an RX 6700XT doesn't fit the budget. So I'm wondering if someone might be able to help. I also think the budget is expandable to maybe 1.5k CHF. Now I just have to teach my brother how to edit videos. Thanks for your replies and ideas.

I built this PC for $780 and have really been enjoying it. I have an editing station I use at home with a 3700x, 1080ti, 64gb, and x570 board. This experience I have had with the 5700g has been amazing so far. As for 4k editing, it has held up very well. I was able to overclock my crucial ballistix 3200mhz memory to 3600mhz (turned down in these benchmarks). When my AIO comes in i'll be able to hopefully push the graphics card and processor even harder! I have no real gaming benchmarks yet but I have been playing 1080p splitgate, medium settings, at 180 fps!

While I would want to maintain the ability to game comfortably, you’ll note from the games I play that it is not as primary of a feature of what I would like to accomplish with this. I am generally happy with the build below but would like general feedback/constructive criticism and help on the local storage solution: To the actual point of the post: I would like to ensure local redundancy with RAID as I have had drives fail in the past and while data was recovered or backed up externally, it was a headache to get up and running again with any type of speed. I will be getting a NAS in the future (Q1 2021) and have plenty of external storage right now to hold me over until that point. In the list I intend to us the M.2 for a boot and main program drive; and the HDDs in RAID 6 to allow 4 TB of usable space with two redundancy. As I have found again and again hardware RAID is recommended over software and is essentially necessary for RAID 6. However, I worry about write speeds with RAID 6 especially since I am having a hard time vetting a RAID controller as much of the information seems to be older. The Questions: What RAID controller would those with the knowledge recommend? Is RAID 6 overkill in a local machine? Is it even possible? Does AMD hinder this in any way and should I look to Intel? My Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K is coming out soon, actually in a day or two. This beast shoots RAW 4K at 75 fps max. A computer that can handle this kind of footage is crucial. Especially when dealing with RAW, color grading, etc. (I'm editing in Premiere Pro CC 2019 by the way.) Give a list of all your recommended cards ASAP that would be appropriate for MY SETUP. Hello Community! I'm Dev and after doing some research for the last two weeks, I decided to come to this place, as the level of knowledge and engagement seems to be to high standards! I run a little design studio with three people (plus freelance) doing lots of video recently. Right now, we have 3 Mac Pro, two iMacs, a Mac Mini (for administration) and several Macbook Pro. All Macs are connected via 2xGb LCAP and a Synology DS1812+ equipped with 6 WD Reds serves also over bonded ports. The Synology did nothing but file sharing so far and it did well. Since upgrading to Gigabit-Network we've been able to edit 1080p on the NAS via NFS-mounts. Because our customers demand it, we did all shooting and editing in 4K recently, ending up with full SSDs and some external Thunderbolt SSDs we shuffle around. In a nutshell – a total disaster. It was easy to stumble across the Qnap TVS-871T (and similiar) which offers a super fast connection that would enable us to edit 4K over the network and get back to our approved structures and routines for handling stuff and backups. But with customers demanding more and more quality while simultaneously increasing the pressure on pricing, we can't put down 3-5 grand for the Qnap solution. But, we have some hardware around. And while I did my own builds in the past, I would appreciate your help here: Is it possible to build a file server with Thunderbolt-Networking? The goal should be a server that can deliver decent speed to at least two machines over Thunderbolt to edit 4K. As we have a lot of space on the Synology, we could use it for backup and the new NAS for actual work only. That takes away the need for a backup on the new NAS itself or even for redundancy. Would JBOD be an option here? Parts we have around: Intel Xeon E5-1620 V2 Intel i5 6600K 32GB ECC 1600 MHz DDR3 empty cases PSUs So, a build based on a server mainboard with the E5 and the ECC RAM suggests itself, but I think there will be almost no mainboards for that with Thunderbolt built in (or are there?). It would be okay to do a build with the i5 if the CPU would suffice for the purpose. Can anyone recommend a build for our needs? Mainboards that have working Thunderbolt networking. And which OS to use (we are all macOS and Linux guys but wouldn't mind using Windows if it meets our needs). Thanks for your help! Dev

I've asked a bunch of people this question already and have gotten a bunch of different answers. I'm looking for a PC that can run games very smoothly at high settings (4K gaming doesn't matter), is VR capable, great for multi track music production (with multiple effects added onto each track), and is also great for 4K video editing. Monitors and OS should be excluded from this price (but if you have any suggestions for monitors, I'd be happy to hear them :) ) The issue is that the needs for a high-end gaming PC are different to those of a high-end video production PC (especially one that edits 4K footage), on top of that, a high-end music production PC may require certain things as well and unless you're experienced with building PC's for all of these different needs (which I am definitely not), it can get a little tricky given the budget. I'm trying to find the best way to include all of those needs into one PC. Questions are encouraged, please don't hesitate to ask. (If curious, the DAW is Ableton, and the video editing software is Premiere Pro)

I am currently using a 2011 Macbook pro for video editing on the go but since I am slowly switching to shooting in 4K I figured I should upgrade. I am looking at the dell xps 15 9500 with 16 gigs of ram, i7 6th gen and a 960m for decent specs and good battery life and its under a thousand used. I'm just wondering how it performs editing 4k video in premiere and after effects in 2018.

Hello! Basically I'm in the market for something to replace both my desktop and laptop. I've just finished my first semester at university as a filmmaking student and need to upgrade my editing solution. Why replace both my desktop and laptop? My desktop simply cannot handle the Panasonic GH4 4k footage that we edit (even transcoded), thanks to the weak Xeon 1603-v3 being pinned at 100% at the thought of opening Premier, and furthermore it takes up far too much space in my cramped dorm room, and my Macbook Pro 15 inch can't handle it either, but on top of that, needs a battery replacement, and is becoming sluggish just nipping around MacOS (even after a fresh install). So basically I'm looking to replace both with one laptop for ultimate portability (essentially allowing me to work anywhere as I move from my dorm, to home, to my girlfriends' pretty frequently and have to stay away for shoots). I don't really think an ultrabook would be up to the job, at least from a longevity perspective, and I may struggle connecting all my peripherals when it is docked in my dorm (keyboard, mouse, external hard drive enclosures, etc). Gaming is not a priority, I only play light games for the most part now due to time constraints, but when I graduate I could always build a gaming desktop if I wanna get back into it. Requirements: -Powerful enough for transcoded 4k editing in Premier Pro CC. -Decent IO for connecting to peripherals. -Good enough battery life to last through lectures (roughly 2-3 hours max) for taking notes. -Not over £1000 ($1300) preferably. I am open to buying used/second hand if it means better bang for my buck. Thanks in advance!

I've been editing 4K footage for about 4 months now as an eSports videographer and even though I can get the job done, the timeline lags when I start to add a lot of clips. I have about $1000 to put into my PC but I don't know where to put it. This is my current build. I'm thinking RAM or a new CPU.
