OK, I think I've heard about as much about ryzen's current gaming issues as I need. My take: Assuming a few optimizations show up, my money is on team red ending up reasonably close to team blue in most games. And since I'm the kind of filthy casual gamer who typically games at 1440p (4k planned) with 20 Chome tabs, 3 Word documents and 2 Powerpoint documents open at the same time as my current game, I'm warming up to the idea of MOAR CORES, provided said cores don't completely sux. So, a 6 - 8 core ryzen system might be an option toward this fall. But then I got to wondering about the future of 3d xpoint and Ryzen. A few thoughts: - Fundamentally: Suuuuupa-fast storage could be a real game changer for gamers. (Instantaneous level loads? Oh yeah!) (As far as productivity goes ... meh.) - For now, there's nothing of interest on the market yet. Micron's QuantX stuff won't come until late this year, and even then, it's a server thing, not a gamer+productivity thing. intel's Optane is coming in q2, but I understand that it's (a) very expensive and (b) not as exciting as everyone originall hoped, so far. - OTOH, when (if?) Optane does come through, though, intel is HARDLY going to licence it to AMD! - Assuming that something really interesting FOR GAMERS turns up in, say, 2018, are ryzen users going to be left home from the ball? Or (to change fairy tale metaphors): Is Optane going to be intel's silver bullet? - For that matter, even apart from gaming: Is Optane going to be intel's silver bullet in the server space? Seems like fast storage is what the server market is all about! (Did I mention that I have a couple grand of stock in AMD and Nvidia, but not intel?) - What kind of MB advances are going to be required to start playing the 3d xpoint game, anyway? - Or does 3d xpoint turn out to be vaporware?

While SSD prices have been slowly decreasing and capacities increasing over the last few years, ever since a year or two ago performance for the average user has come to a standstill. Boot up and app launch times have barely improved at all over the last year or two, but 3D XPoint could be here to change that. The original reason why SSDs were so much faster than HDDs was random read and writes and latency, and 3D XPoint seems to have significantly lower latency than NAND based SSDs as well as having somewhat higher random reads and writes. While it's nothing close to the "1000x faster" that Intel was advertising 3D XPoint flash to be compared to NAND, it still seems like it'll be a significant increase that we should be looking forward to. Hopefully regular consumer based 3D XPoint products get released soon as I really want to see if they can make any difference to performance for the average user.

My new system I had just setup is running on the Kabylake 7700K alongside the Asus Rog Swift Z270E. It's ready for Optane. From what I read in the official Intel website, it can only run on a bootable SATA drive which has to have Windows 10 in it. The drives that I have in my rig are: 1 x Samsung 960 Evo NVME M.2 250GB 1 x Samsung 850 SSD 256GB 1 x Seagate 2TB 7200RPM (This is for storage) 1 x WD Blue 1TB (Windows and games) I will be running Optane on the WD Blue HDD. And the reason for this is because I will be installing tonnes of games here and I want to run everything fast. The 2 Samsung SSDs simply do not cut it due to their limited available space. So the noob question is as follows: I read the Asus manual. It said that in order to run Optane, I have to switch to the RAID controller from AHCI controller. And... Due to the limitation of the Intel Chipset, all the drives will be in RAID mode. If I did not create any volumes, can the other 3 drives still be read in the system?

So I know that if you write and rewrite an SSD , (Micro) SD card or USB stick many times it loses it’s function is that also true for 3D XPoint ? as a cashe intel Optane gets rewritten very frequently. I’m curios about your answers

This is cool and all, but what's probably much, much more interesting for me and all of you is a mysterious "Z-NAND" that Samsung announced but didn't give us much details about. This product sounds like a 3D-XPoint competitor, with Samsung advertising huge latency improvements and that it will bridge the gap between SSDs and DRAM. Sound a little familiar yet? Z-NAND doesn't seem like a completely different thing from V-NAND-instead Samsung is saying they redesigned some of the circuitry and the controller, but the large latency improvement and somewhat significant sequential read jump from nvme to Z-NAND still seem pretty big to me. I still feel like 3D-XPoint will probably outperform Z-NAND, especially with the massive random read/write iops numbers 3D XPoint is able to spit out. This still seems like a big performance jump from what's currently on the market, though, and with the 1TB Z-NAND product coming out this year we'll be able to see just how powerful this thing really is. Thoughts?

I'm planning a new desktop around Skylake (I currently only have an ultrabook). However everybody keeps saying how mindblowing the new 3D Xpoint technology on Intel's upcoming Optane SSD's will be over the current SSD's. I also understood that the Optane SSD's will only be working with the upcoming Kaby Lake which makes me wonder if I should just wait for the Kaby Lake over going with Skylake now. The possible unaffordable price of these new SSD's frightens me as well. What do you guys think?

Yeah 3D XPoint is coming soon and it'll be awesome, but my question is will it even be worth it? Sure, it's like 7 times faster than the fastest pcie ssd right now, but top notch ssds(like the 950 pro) are already soooo fast will you even notice the difference? As well, it'll probably be limited by the interface. Will it only have a home in companies and enthusiasts who HAVE to have the best stuff? Cause my next ssd I ever get will probably be an m.2 ssd of some sort(maybe the 950 pro). Curious as to you guys' opinions. One thing that might be interesting though is a nvme XPoint hybrid drive.
