Hi everyone. I recently formatted my laptop, and installed Windows 8 from a CD (the harddrive was completely formatted before installing). The installation of WIndows succeded, but when the computer would restart, it would just go into some kind of boot loop. The screen would flash a couple of times and the fan would spin, and then stop.... And then repeat it infinitely. I found out though, that if I force it to turn off (by holding the turn-on/off on the pc down for a while), and then boot in to the BIOS/UEFI and choose Windows Bootloader in "Boot Override" (Or something like that), it boots into Windows just fine. My question is, how can I fix this? The #1 boot priority is already set to Windows, so that shouldn't be the problem, right? I'd also like to know if there's a way, that I can make my PC load the BIOS/UEFI everytime it turns on. Like just opening the BIOS when pressing the start button. Thanks a lot, Chrissy. (My laptop is an Asus r551l if it's to any use)

I was here trying to setup a program to enable multiple desktops on Windows 8, until it told me that a few hotkeys were already reserved... Namely Windows + any number/function key. So I decided to see what these did. To my surprise, pressing the Windows button and a number opened a program in my taskbar, with the number corresponding to the position it is in (Just tried numpad keys and those don't work). While I'm here I might as well mention a few more windows life-hacks that I know. Control button + Click = multiple select Shift + Click = select all files between two points Control + A = Select all files Control + Tab = Flip between browser tabs (Firefox, might work in chrome) Control + Esc = Opens the start menu. Another excuse to disable your windows button for gaming ;P WinKey + W = Search (Win8) Some basic ones EVERYONE should know WinKey + L = lock PC Control + C = Copy (On the command line, it means close) Control + V = Paste Control + X = Cut WinKey + M = Minimise all windows (Great for PornHub ) Alt + Tab = switch open windows (Windows 7) WinKey + Tab = Flip windows in a fancy way if Aero is enabled. Doesn't work on Win8.

I have a Lenovo keyboard, specifically one that came with a Lenovo Yoga tablet. I'm currently using it via bluetooth on my Windows 8 system, but the windows key (android key?) doesn't respond and many of the FN keys are either non-responsive or incorrectly labelled. Is there any way to get into the devices functionality and change some of the keys? I plan on buying a Windows specific keyboard soon, but until then I'm trying to get by with this little thing.

Hi everyone, I recently got the go to update to Windows 10, however whenever I try to update , it always reboots back to the desktop with my current version of Windows installed. I did some digging around and apparently, my PC is missing some key OS files, and I assume I can't upgrade unless I have all the files I need. I've decided to do a reinstall of Windows, however I'm not sure how the process should go. I'm going to boot off a USB and will reinstall from there, however I'm not sure if I will need to put in my CD key again, as it should already be tied to the computer. Will I need to reactivate my CD- key if I'm reinstalling? Any help I can get is much appreciated!

So for obvious reasons Ive been wanting upgrade to Windows 10 on my laptop. However, for other reasons that aren't necessarily relevant I DO want to keep Windows 8 on it... interesting predicament. I was wondering if anyone has experience dual booting operating systems on a laptop. I'm assuming it's fairly simple? (Install 10 ISO on a USB Drive, create a partition in system memory, etc. Etc.)I'm sure I'm not the only one to think of this, but I just wanted to get people's opinions and experiences. Thanks so much.

I resently built a new computer with windows 8 on it (specs below) and everything ran great for some time. Until I moved the system across the room, idk if I shut it down incorrectly or what but won't boot (it would occasionally boot up but mostly gave a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner) into windowsome anymore, I've tried about every windows utility , but nothing has worked . After the first 2 or 3 boots it goes back to the black screen. I've also wiped the ssd and reinstalled windows clean, didn't work, (when windows runs , it is slow on and off ) how can I get this thing to boot in a stable manor ? I tried to boot my laptop that has windows 8.1 on with a ubuntu live CD. I did some editing on it and now if I try to boot into windows it says recovery can't be found and gives me an error 0xc0000225. I have googled for hours and the regular fixes just don't do it. If I connect it to another PC I can see all my data there(I did back up) but when I boot the same error comes up. I'm 99% sure that the HDD is locked so how can I unlock it. HELP!

So for starters, my computer is a dual boot system with both W7, and W8.1. So today we tried switching cases and we got everything working, but for some reason windows 7 boots perfectly and windows 8.1 will get caught in an infinite boot cycle. All files are still accessible through windows 7 so the drive isnt completely corrupt. Anybody have any idea what might be going on?

Ok, first off the error itself, the machine isnt throwing any codes but rather going back and forth between the desktop and the windows 8 metro application thingy (you know that thing everyone hated), so the pc is completely useless, i dont have the cash for a new windows os (if anyone has a code that would be awsome), but the only thing i use it for is a pyton/html workstation so im compltely fine with throwing ubuntu on it and calling it a day. Im not new to linux as my gaming pc is running ubuntu, but the boot usb wont load ubuntu, i would love to just format the drive using a bios something or other, but im a super noob 16 year old who dosent know shit. Laptop model is a compaq cq58 if its at all important. Any help would be extremely appreciated and i wouldnt mind throwing some csgo skins your way either (dont get your hopes up its like 50cents maybe).

I actually ran into this memory leak issue a while back when I first built my current computer and installed Windows 8.1. After getting everything up and running, I couldn't figure out what was consuming 16GB of RAM. A reboot would fix it, but it kept re-occurring every other day or so. Finally I got to the bottom of it, and it turned out to be a compatibility issue with the Killer E2200 NIC and the Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring driver (NDU). Well I just recently reloaded the OS with a brand new clean install, and the issue re-occurred. I didn't think about sharing my findings back then, but because i just went through it again, I thought I might give people a heads up in case they are having similar issues. Here it is in a Knowledge Base type format: --- Applies To: Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Computers with motherboards featuring the Killer E2200 NIC Symptoms: Computers running Windows 8 with the Killer Ethernet E2200 NIC may experience poor performance due to high memory utilization. Heavy network usage such as downloading large files, or streaming media can accelerate the issue, causing games, applications, and the operating system itself to perform poorly. After a reboot, the system operates normally until the issue re-occurs. Cause: The Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver is a kernel mode driver that was introduced with Windows 8. This driver is apparently incompatible with some specific NIC drivers including the Killer E2200 NIC, as well as some Realtek NICs. Heavy data usage causes this driver to consume available system non-paged memory until there is no more available. Resolution: Disable the Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver (NDU) by performing the following steps: Open the registry editor by right-clicking on the Windows Start Button, select Run, and type regedit. Click OK. Warning, per Microsoft: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk. In the left-hand pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > ControlSet001 > Services and select Ndu. In the right-hand pane, double-click on the "Start" key and change the value to 4. Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

So basically in a little bit I will be building a computer. I currently own a laptop with windows 8.1. If I were to upgrade to windows 10 I could transfer the OS to the new computer, however I will be giving someone else the laptop. If I take windows 10 off the laptop will one of the versions be unauthenticated? I heard that even illegitimate copies of windows 7 and 8 will be getting a free upgrade to windows 10. If I transfer the 8.1 OS to the new system and one of the OS's are illegitimized by this, could I upgrade to windows 10 to get a full legit copy? Any explanation of the USB installation process could help as well.

I bought all of the bioshock games a while ago on steam for like, $15 dollars. I played through bioshock infinite, and found it to easily be one of the best games I've ever played. However, now that I'm trying to play bioshock 1, I've noticed a game breaking bug (at least for me). The audio simply wont work past the starting cut scene. I hear the main character go through the shpeal about how he was special, and then as soon as the plane crashes I get silence. at first, I thought this was because the character had just survived a plane crash and his hearing was shot, but when absolutely no audio came through right up until the pod that takes you to rapture had docked (also, could not figure out how to get out of the pod) I figured something had gone wrong. I've recently switched to a 2560X1080 monitor. I don't think this is the factor since I use headphones, not the monitor's speakers, and game displayed the option for the 2560X1080 resolution. What I do think is the problem is that my keyboard, a logitech g710+, has a volume scroll wheel, and when I try to use it I get kicked in and out of an in-game menu. I was thinking that perhaps it was reading a signal from the volume scroll wheel which caused the game to mute, even when the wheel wasn't being turned. The only other option I can think of is that the game uses some audio software which was abandoned some time after the release of the game. Any help on this front would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Here's my hardware (all most recent drivers): motherboard: msi g55 sli (Realtek ALC892 audio chipset) cpu: intel i5 4690K gpu: gigabyte gtx 780 ghz edition OC to +55 mhz core and +40 mhz memory that should be all of the relevant stuff, anyways.

After moving to a new flat, I have noticed that my computer has begun to behave extremely weirdly. My observations: - Mouse cuts off for 1-2 seconds, then comes back on (mouse lights done turn off) - Mobo "Gigabyte" Logo displays for around 30 seconds when starting up. - With the screens turned off, the computer runs for about 20 seconds after being turned off - Opening up a drive (eg. E:) takes a very long time, and sometimes fails. - Weird browser related glitches, desktop icons sometimes appear through chrome. This is all on a brand new install of Windows 8 (all updated), my specs are: -i5 3570k -Gigabyte 7950 -2x4 1600 mhz corsair ram - Gigabyte Ga-Z77-D3H Motherboard - Samsung 840 Series MZ-7TD 120GB SSD (C: Drive) If there is anything, anything anyone can suggest, Ill do it.

So i need to install a copy of windows onto a new PC that i will build in December. I have my Windows 8.1 OEM product key but no disk. My brother has a windows 8.1 home disk that I might use, along with my OEM product key. However i don't even know if this will work and if so i don't have any idea about how to deactivate/uninstall windows on my current pc before swapping the same install of windows to a completly new PC. Can you please explain how i might do it if it even works in the first place.

Should I install the drivers on 8 and then do my required windows updates and install 8.1 or should I update, install 8.1 then install the drivers?

For the past 6 month since after I rebuild my computer after changing the graphics and cooling for my computer. every time I turn on the computer from a cold boot it will turn on and pause at the screen where it starts to load windows. it stays like this for about 3 minutes then turns off. when I then turn the computer on after that it will boot perfectly and on takes about <1 minute to load windows and will work fine after that. some times when I turn it off after that it will turn on fine and some times it will do the same thing again or it may go into windows recovery. note: I think it may have to do with the hard drive being place into different sata ports. since originally installed win8 i have tried resetting the bios but that has not helped Pc specs: cpu: amd fx9590 motherboard: asrock 990FX Extreme9 gpu: amd r9 295x2 240gb ssd 320gb hard drive 500gb hard drive 4000gb hard drive blue ray player parts that where replace navidia msi geforce gt630 any other details feel free to ask

Hello everyone, I've ran into some issues with installing an OS on my system. I bought a used laptop running Windows 8.1 trial, i.e. not activated. My plan was to buy Windows 7 (because it's so much cheaper), install it and immediately upgrade to Windows 10. Now, I can't seem to get Windows 7 to install correctly (drivers, display (at 4k), and the thing installed to the USB, not the SSD, and it's an OEM...) Can I just download the Windows 10 .iso, run it and use my Windows 7 key for it, or am I pretty much screwed and should have spent a bit more on 8.1 to begin with? Cheery, Jonas
