I'm getting my PC ready for sale but I'm unsure how to go about clean installing windows on it. I have the windows 8.1 disk that I bought when I built my PC but my PC is now running windows 10 and doesn't have a disk drive... Can someone please help me, what do I need to do? Thanks in advance everyone, Hodge

Hey guys, I've got a few questions about Windows 8.1, and a couple of odd ones, so bear with me for a second while i'm explaining the scenario. I own a 2013 laptop with an installation of windows 8.1, which i use for everything from school to gaming to photoshop-bumblefuckery. It's not especially powerful, but it suffices in most cases... Or at least it did. The SSHD i've got in my laptop is a 750gb, 5400rpm 2.5" drive, and it's sucking. Hard. I'm fairly certain my drive is going to die somewhere in the next 2 weeks, and i'm looking to re-install my version of Windows 8.1 on a new hard drive, a 1TB SSD. When i say "re-install", i mean a complete re-install of windows 8.1, no file transfers, no old caches that have to be copied, a fresh, new installation. I've backed up everything aside from the OS itself, just in case my HDD dies quicker than expected. The questions: - How do i install and activate a new version of windows 8.1 on a new drive, without cloning the old one, presumably using my existing licence? - Are there still any windows-10-upgrade items active on the latest version of windows 8.1? (I'm running a 2014 version of windows 8.1... I despise updates. -_-) I'm not really expecting a full guide running me through the process, but anything from a link to a pre-existing guide, a youtube video, or even just a shove in the general direction of what i'm looking for would be much-appreciated! Cheers guys, and thanks in advance!

Through my college I was able to get a copy of windows 8.1 embedded industry pro and I was wondering if that would run better than the full professional version on an old laptop. The laptop's specs are CPU: AMD C-50 dual core 1ghz with integrated graphics RAM: 4GB It shipped with windows 7 home and currently runs windows 10 home albeit slowly. would this version of windows be better for it?

Dear LTT forum users, I recently got my hands on a new PC that i got from my late uncle. The machine is better equiped then mine with an X99 Chipset instead of a X97. My current machine holds a i7 4790K with a single GTX 780ti inside of it and 16 GB of ram all sitting on a Maximus VII hero board. (Windows 10) The other PC has 2 GTX 980's also 16GB of ram and is sitting on a Asus X99-A motherboard , i forgot what CPU it was exactly running but it was a pretty good one . (Windows 8.1) Now i'm having trouble and i'm a bit worried to change all the parts all of a sudden , like first of all i don't want to lose all my data , second of all i preferably wouldn't want to damage any parts of my computer. I searched a bit on the internet but didn't exactly know what to search for so i came here , sorry if this topic already exists like i sad i couldn't find anything. If somebody could explain me what to do , if it's even smart to start using the other pc i would be incredibly gratful. I would like to thank you already. sorry if my english isn't to good.

Hey guys, I am helping a friend with her laptop but it seems like the problem was a bit more complicated then I thought it would be. Specs are the following: CPU: AMD A8-6410, GPU: AMD Radeon R5, RAM: 8GB, HDD: Something with 1TB. I would be forever grateful if someone could help me fix this as fast as possible! Cheers! Problem: - Stuck in Windows repair when booting Stuff I've tried: - Resetting completely (Got the error "There was a problem resetting your computer") - Used CMD to try this

YOU WILL NEED A DESKTOP COMPUTER WITH TWO SATA CONNECTORS, A WINDOWS OS INSTALL DISK (Any one of your choice...) So I recently found my brothers old computer. It's an Acer Aspire 5551 if your curious. Sadly It was broken, and when I'd previously tried powering it on, It would crash at the login screen at create a Boot Dump log. Now If your in this case you might become stuck, especially before you can even get to the BIOS. If you cannot get to the BIOS: A) Get a new hard drive, especially if the computer is old... B) Use a old or present desktop computer that allows space for more than just one SATA connector. (If your hard drive dosen't connect VIA SATA, use any other appropriate connectors, or use a SATA adapter/extension/converter. Then after connection, go to My Computer, and you should see it mounted (If on Mac it should appear on Desktop, more on Macs later). If you do, your probably thinking just go to the bar at the top and click format. Well, you can't do that. especially if it's the C: drive, because the drive has encryption. To bypass this, go to "My Computer", if your still in My Computer skip opening it AGAIN. Click "Properties" (You can also go to the tab bar at the side and right-click on Computer and then on the right-click menu click Properties). On the left-hand side you'll probably see a bar/tab with some choices such as: - Device Manager - Remote Settings - System Protection - Advanced System Settings You'll need to click on System Protection (It should have the Yellow and Blue Windows Security Shield Icon by the side of the text). A bow should have now appeared, with a list of all of your drives. Below the box on mounted drives, is a 'Configure' button. BEFORE YOU CLICK - Click on the drive that is from the other computer, not your C: drive. If you disable protection on your C: your prove to having viruses edit your System Files. If you have clicked on your drive from your other computer (Broken/Old PC), now click the 'Configure' button. It should have some option boxes on a properties page. At the top it should have so called 'System Protection'. Well it should be by default on, well you want to turn it off, for now. Go back to 'My Computer', on Windows 8 it's called 'My PC'. Click on your old drive and now you can format it. Once done, insert your Windows install disk (Which ever one you pick, I suggest Windows 7 or higher, if that, Windows 8). Start with the x32 bit install disk, your PC will tell you if you need the x64 bit disk. If your confident, use the x64 bit disk, but if your unsure use my suggestion Insert the disk into your disk drive and copy the files from the disk over to the Hard Drive of the old computer. In the progress box, make sure it says Copying <> amount of files and NOT Moving <> amount of files. If so cancel. If its COPYING, don't worry. After it's done, but the hard drive in your computer and boot it up Good Luck!

Hello, wonderful people of Linus Tech Tips forums! I recently purchased a Nextbook 10.1 from a second-hand shop it was originally a display model from a Walmart. However, the issue I am encountering is due to it being a display model all admin abilities are locked behind an admin account that is password protected!Sadly they did not provide me with the password for said admin account.I do have access to a local account which gives me the abilities to do basic things, however, installing programs is out of the question on this account. So is there any way I can get into the admin account or possibly gain admin rights somehow? I switched my hard drive with my operating system (Windows 8) between systems and now when I try to enter the key in it comes up with the error above. I put the hard drive back into the old computer and deleted the key there, but I still get this error. I have also repeatedly uninstalled the key in the current computer, but I still have no luck. How do I make the computer register the key?

I recently purchased a password reset key featured in the Linus Tech Tips video below. It works fine an most computers, but when I tested it on my Windows 8 laptop, it removed the live account and replaced it with a seemingly identical local account. Now, it requires a different password and I can't get back in. I can't reset the new account password with the key, as it does not appear in the list of accounts. It was the only account on the computer. Thanks for any advice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_JIhn3vJVI

Hello. MY pc randomly frozen and when i rebooted it gives me a "LogonUI.exe - Application Error" and it reads "The instruction at 0x00007FFE62FF37B6 referenced memory at 0x00007FFE5E9958E0. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185. Click ok to terminate the program." This by my knowledge is an amd graphics card driver error. I have read that i need to boot up my pc into safe mode with networking but i have tried that and it still gives me the same error. Please help. This is the link to the thread I was referring to: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2735833/logonui-exe-application-error-windows.html

Hello. Don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but i try anyway. Today i tryed to factory reset my computer. It said that i would reset the computer back to windows version it came with, and that was windows 8, so i decided to to chose the option keep my files and then just remove my files. When i came to 45 % a blue screen came up with a message that said it dident work. I choose to press continue to use windows 10. Then when i pressed and the pc was loading, a black screen came up and said "No bootable partition in table". What does that mean? Is everything on my computer deleted? What can i do. Everything was pre-install, so i dont have the installation cd.

Hey guys, I have yet another question... So... I wanted to buy a new computer, but forgot to buy a new OS. This year I updated ly Laptop's windows 8.1 to windows 10. Will I be able to use any of these, to run simultaneously on my laptop and a new desktop? Thanks! Sailer

So today I was having some issues activating my windows 7 key after reinstalling the os, after contacting microsoft and getting my key activated, the representative asked if I wanted windows 10. Kinda confused, I asked if it was going to cost me- but they replied with "No, its a one time offer for a free upgrade". They took me to a webpage which basically just installed the windows 10 upgrade program (the same one that was used when that annoying little badge was in the bottom right), and currently W10 is the os running on that system. Dont really know why im posting this, but just thought it was good to throw out there.
