  1. Hello there, I am not 100% sure whether a 650W PSU will be enough for this system as it's a rather weird combination. I need to pick a new PSU for my friend's rig, relevant specs: i7-870 which I intend to overclock as far as I can to keep up with the new GPU (old AF but also power-hungry, according to this test http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/p55-motherboard-overclock,2460-7.html ) Sapphire RX 580 8GB Nitro+ 8GB of DDR3-1333 RAM 2TB HDD, 120GB SSD 5 case fans total My friend is budget-limited and the only decent units he can get are maximum 650W (XFX Pro XXX 650W, EVGA GQ 650W, XFX Core 650W non-modular, Be Quiet! PowerZone 650W) Will that wattage suffice? From what I've seen, that CPU is a power-hog once it's OC'd and the high-clocked RX 580 8GB variant isn't too good in that regard either... And I need to OC the CPU because at its low stock clock speeds it won't be able to keep up with the RX 580, even at 2560x1080. It definitely is enough at stock speeds, it's overclocking that gets me a little worried. I might be tempted to OC the GPU too. Thoughts?
  2. Toying around with parts for my eventual system build, I am settling on the AMD Ryzen 1600 CPU, with intentions to overclock it. My current fantasy system build gives an estimate 300W power consumption total, with all parts at their default configurations in terms of clock speeds. With this, I am looking at PSUs that are rated anywhere from ~400 to ~600 Watts. What I'm wondering is how much of a buffer should I leave, particularly once the CPU gets overclocked (assuming everything else stays at default). What little information I have found suggests that this CPU would require an additional 10-20W over the base estimate of 65W, though it is difficult to find articles to confirm this.
  3. Hello everyone, I'm curious if I have enough wattage on my 600w EVGA PSU to add a second GTX 1080. My build currently is, -CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k Overclocked to 4.6GHz -Mobo: MSI Gaming M5 Z170A -RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB DDR4 2133MHz -Storage: Two WD Blue HDDs -PSU: EVGA 600w Semi-Modular 80+ Bronze -GPU: Asus GTX 1080 Strix - Boost Clock at 2068MHz and Memory Clock at 11010 MHz -CPU Cooler: Corsair H55 AIO Water Cooler Thanks!
  4. I'll keep it short. There's a TL;DR if you want. 3 years ago I constructed my own PC. In that time, most things have been fine. The graphics card died (random freezes, disconnecting) so I had to buy a new one (for £400 :o) and now something has happened that I need some guidance on. Throughout those 3 years, odd things have happened here and there. 1.The headset would flash on and off occasionally. 2. restarting the PC ALWAYS ensured the hard drive wouldn't be recognised, only turning the computer fully off and on made it recognisable, 3. buying a new, advanced keyboard with more than two USB plugs blue-screened my PC when browsing the internet. Unplugging one of the two USB's stopped the bluescreen. (razer chroma v2) 4. The wireless internet was incredibly unstable. Would cut out once every 30 seconds. Another day it would be crystal clear speeds. Buying a new wireless dongle, switching wireless channels etc. never helped. Throughout this time I never heard any weird noises other than my case vibrating or a slight hissing from my graphics card. Never an issue, however: TL;DR Now, here's the big issue of recent: I heard LOUD buzzing coming from my power supply, last night. It randomly begun while playing Skyrim. I turned off my pc as a result. When attempting to turn it on VIA THE WALL, it caused a surge that tripped half the house. I tried a further 3 times, causing a house-wide trip switch every attempt at turning on the PC at the wall. The next morning, I could turn on the switch at the wall, and my monitor and speakers would light up, but the PC itself won't turn on. What has happened? I assume the power supply is dead, and I will be RMA'ing it. But if it turns out all my parts are damaged, what can I do? If my parts aren't damaged, perhaps it's worth upgrading the lot anyway in case the 3 years have aged anything prematurely? Thoughts?
  5. HI. I recentlly decided to build a new pc. Heres the components: MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon MoBo 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance Led 3200 MHz Intel i7 7700 BOX Kingston 120GB SSD Seagate 7.2k rpm 2TB HDD Corsair VS450 450W PSU Phanteks P400S Tempered Glass Case 2x 140mm fans 24" LED Monitor Gaming mouse and keyboard. At first i had to cut the GPU due not wanting to spend all my money at once. SO i decided to buy the components above first, and use the onboard GPU to power my system. Im planning to buy the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X GPU next month. Before i bought the parts, in a moments blindness, i decided to just use some websites like: pcpartpicker and outervision psu calculator, to figure out how big a power supply i would need, not really putting any thought into quality and such(because im a bimbo). On these websites, i was told that i would need, with the 1070 GPU included, about 400W of power. SO i went on the the site where i bought my parts and bought the first low price PSU from a brand i knew, that i came upon, the Corsair VS450. AS i said, i didnt really read anything about PSUs before that, and i have know started to think that i made a mistake. On all the tier lists its trash tier and so on, but its still about 45W ABOVE what the websites reccomended that i should get. SO my question is: WIll i also have to spend money on a new PSU when i buy my 1070 Gaming X, or will i be able to run this system with just the Corsair VS450. I ddont want to fry my system or anything, but i wouldnt see why this would become a problem, since all the websites reccomended that i got a PSU with at least 400W, and i got one with 450W. Hope you can help me. PS: I suppose its relevant, that im not planning on any overclocking and such.
  6. I want to build a PC before I head back to college in the fall. After watching the TechQuickie video on choosing the right PSU, I found myself second guessing whether I should get a 430W 80+ white, or a 450/500W power supply with a bronze rating. PC part picker says the system would consume around 260W. Here is the list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MindofSamuel/saved/7Fc8dC . Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Hello all, Looking all over, you can find countless places to get a rough idea of how much your system draws, and some will even add a few watts for you. I'm interested in getting at why. According to this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus higher efficiency is expected at 50% usage than at 20% or 80%. To add to this, usually the same amount is expected at 20% as 80%. If we interpolate a normal distribution it should be that a psu is most efficient when using 50% of it's rated wattage. What this would mean is that ideally if you're willing to spend the money on it, is that the best power supply is one that has a continuous wattage of double what you system draws. I'm wondering out of pure curiosity as well for my new rig. On pcpartpicker it says I'll be using 385W. The current plan is that I'll the Supernova G2 750W PSU. It's almost exactly double what I think I'll need. It's also more power than what I think I'll need for a long time, so over the years I'll be able to put it in lots of different systems. Even if I wanted to run 2 high end graphics cards, and an i9 it would still be enough. In the name of future proofing it also has a ten year warranty. Since nobody else is doing this to my knowledge, I thought it'd be worthwhile to double check. Would I be better off with with the 650 or 550 watt versions? What about with a G3? My budget is fairly flexible.

  9. Im building a PC for my friens basically composed of 2nd hand parts, it's missing a PSU. I have no idea about the power that this thing sucks. I7 4770 R9 270x
  10. I have a Gpu that only draws power from Pci e slot it's a gtx 6200 turbocashe what will happen when I overclock it and it needs more power than the Pcie slot can deliver
  11. I am building a nas out of an olb optiplex 330 and I wanted to know if it can handle 2 or 3 wd ironwolf pro 3tb hdd drives. Any help?
  12. Hey all, I'm very new to building computers and I've just got to the part about learning on how to choose the right PSU. Multiple sources have said to look out for continuous and peak wattage, however, I can't seem to find this metric on multiple manufacturers. For example: http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/enthusiast-v-series/v550/ I'm sorry in advance if the information was blatantly there already.
  13. Hello there! I've found some pretty good parts for my pc, but I can't really get out how much watt PCU I need. My specs will be: CPU: i5-4590 GPU: Radeon RX 590 Red Dragon 8GB Memory: Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C-PB 4x4GB Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard 18E4 Cheap Gaming mouse and keyboard, around 2-3 cheap end fan's and a 27" Philips monitor Now I have seen that the GPU has recommended 600 watts, but I've found a reasonably priced 550-watt corsair PCU though if it isn't enough I can try to find better deals.
  14. It all started in 2015 when i build my first pc, this pc with the spesification of Core i5-4460 3.2Ghz little overclocked to 3.4Ghz Stock heatsink Sapphire AMD R7-370 Dual-X OC 8GB DDR3 2 x 1TB SATA No Fan 1 DVD RW Asus H79m E (If not mistaken) 2 Days ago when i just casually scrolling Youtube, my screen just went black and not responding. I brought it to my local computer store and services, and they said my GPU just die. He is giving me choice to go up for the Sapphire RX 560 or GTX 1650 the MSI one. In my place, the price are a little high so for a Ventus 4Gb MSI GTX 1650 is almost $200 and the Sapphire one is almost $160 The problems are, I'm going to use this GPU for the next 3 or 3.5 years span. I planned to replace my R7 370 next year so that the age will be longer but it is dead now. Second Problem, I've been using the Fsp Hexa+ 400W PSU for the last 4 years. WIll it be Ok if i use RX 560 or GTX 1650 with it? PS: I use my machine mainly gaming and video and sound editing and multimedia. I don't use any laptop. Thanks, Xynt.
  15. Hi guys, I recently got a new gpu, it's a XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS XXX Edition 8GB card. The card is a great step up from my previous GPU (GTX 750TI) but something's been bothering me, when looking at MSI Afterburner the maximum amount of watts I've seen the card use has been somewhere around 120W and that has only been very briefly. With most demanding games I've played (The Division 2, Devil May Cry 5, Middle Earth: Shadow of War) at maximum of close to maximum details so I know the card should be pushed to its limits. My problem is I know the RX580 is a 180W TDP GPU, so should it not be using close to that number? I've seen videos of RX570's using in the neighborhood of 150W. I'm not an expert in how these things work so I might be horribly mistaken about all of this, I mean my RX580 is performing a lot better than my previous card but if it's not using all of its horses then I'm not getting my money's worth. I suspect it might have something to do with my power supply, I've had it for about 8-9 years I think (I got it out of my mom's old pc I didn't buy it myself), I can't find any information about it online, the only information I have is the details on the power supply itself. I'm linking that information below. The PSU has 2x6 pin connectors that I'm using for the GPU, my RX580 only has 1x8pin connector but luckily it came with a 2xfemale 6pin to 1xmale 8pin adapter. So both of my PSU's 6 pins are connected to my GPU. The thing that I'm worried about is I can't find any information on my PSU on the internet, I don't know if it has any efficiency rating or if it is a good brand? Or that it might be going bad? Maybe one of the 6 pin connectors isn't working? My previous GTX750ti ran fine but that was only a 75W card. :/ Before I run out and spend money on a PSU I first wanted to find out if I'm mistaken about all of this? Sorry for the long post I just wanted to share as much information as I can to help you. Thanks in advance!
  16. hey guy's i have a question i have 2x a 1080ti if they are working 1 of them is jumping in wattage from 150 to max 350 or even higher is this normal?? please help!
  17. So I recently invested in a virtual reality headset and everything was going great. My system specs were: 2 x Nvidia 980 SC EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2 PSU Intel i7 6700K 4 x 4 GB RAM DDR4 Dual monitors (HDMI, DVI) VR Headset (DisplayPort) I often let my computer go to sleep rather than shutting down every night. After about 5 days of this set up, when I awoke it from sleep, the second monitor wouldn't wake, in fact, it was no longer receiving signal. I tried reinstalling drivers, unplugging the VR set, reinstalling Windows, and lastly unplugging one of my GPUs (the SLI setup was as new as the VR set, and I was suspecting too much power draw). It worked, at first. After playing some games in VR, I went to reboot my computer to test it and of course the monitor was no longer receiving signal again. After doing a clean install of the drivers 5 consecutive times, it began working again, and that is where I am at right now (I have not tested VR again yet). Other things worth noting: -Both monitors and cables definitely work. -When only one monitor is working, the problem can be narrowed down to the HDMI port on the graphics card not working. -When not working, and booted with 1 monitor only plugged into the HDMI, once it gets passed the Windows startup screen and onto the sign in screen, the monitor no longer receives signal. -SteamVR and the Valve Index are what is being used for the VR side of things. Would anyone out there have an idea as to where the problem lies and would be willing to help me through this? Thank you in advance.
  18. I was thinking of getting a 2070 super, specifically this one: https://www.newegg.ca/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2070-super-gv-n207sgaming-oc-8gc/p/N82E16814932171?Description=2070 super&cm_re=2070_super-_-14-932-171-_-Product it says i need 650 watts, does that stack? like would i need more than 650watts to power my entire system? how do the wattages work?I need to buy a new power supply anyway so I just need to know what to get, I looked at LTT forums power supply tier list, and i got the model i want i just need to know the wattage to choose
  19. Would a Corsair TX550M 80+ Gold 550W be enough for a build with an Intel i5-9600k and RTX 2060 Super? The cooler i'll be using will be the Dark Rock 4 if that helps
  20. Hey all! I have recently found a used RTX 2080ti that is at a price that I find fair, so I am considering buying it. I am concerned that my current PSU may not be sufficient to run the card however, so I am hoping you guys can help me make the decision to pull the trigger or not. PC Specs: EVGA 650 80+ Gold QC Semi Modular PSU Intel i5-9600k @ 4.8 gHz & 1.32v 2x 8 gb 3200 MHz RAM (Total 16 gb @ 3200 MHz) Gigabyte z390 UD Currently running Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 2 SSD's 1 HDD @ 7.2k rpm Let me know if you need any more information. I ran the Seasonic wattage calculator a couple times. The cards I am looking at are either the Zotac RTX 2080ti AMP EXTREME, or Asus RTX 2080ti Dual OC. Both have a boost clock around 1750 MHz I believe. I do intend to leave the cards at stock settings, and I don't mind lowering the clock a little bit if I need to. Thanks for your help in advance, cheers! EDIT: Thanks for the help guys, the seller ended up pulling the ad, he wants to keep his cards for himself. But now I know that should another 2080ti deal come up I should be ok.
  21. Hello! So, I want to change my PSU and I came across this one for a good price(60$ to be exact, if you think it's overpriced, I want to say that all tech is overpriced where I live. For example 9900K was like 700$ or more when it came out, now it's "only" about 600, which is still more than I'd pay for it to be shipped to me from US...): https://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001964 and PSU calculator says that it would work with my system https://outervision.com/b/XbiQJ1 but I checked the one on newegg and it says that I need a 600W. My question is, do I really need that much power? Or is it exaggerated? Also, is that PSU any good?
  22. I am having trouble chosing a power supply for my PC. I was thinking of going with a 600 watt seasonic fanless but a 2080ti and 9900k require a lot of power. Here are my specs: CPU: Intel - Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor CPU Cooler: NZXT - Kraken X72 Liquid CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus - ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory: Corsair - Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory Storage: Samsung - 970 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive Video Card: Asus - GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB ROG Strix Gaming OC Video Card Case: be quiet! - Dark Base 700 ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: SeaSonic - PRIME Titanium 600 W 80+ Titanium Certified Fully-Modular Fanless ATX Power Supply (can change) Fans: Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM * 4
  23. So i've got a scrap macbook pro from 2013 which i wouldn't mind using. I've gotten a spare 3.5" hdd and i've rigged something up that lets me connect it to the mac but my question is...how much wattage can the mbp supply through it's sata power connector. Because i know it was designed for a 2.5" hdd but i just wanna see if i can try and use this 3.5" one. I'm just wondering how much wattage the mac can give. Thanks in advance!
  24. Hi there, I have an GIGABYTE 1050Ti Windforce OC, the one with on extra power plug. So I'm thinking to change for an MSI RX480 Gaming X 4G. I have read that this card TDP is 150W, so I'm wondering if my PSU would hold it, at least for another year. My PSU is a ThermalTake TR2 430W, the newer version. My setup: ASUS B350M-A PRIME AMD Ryzen 5 1500X @3.8GHz BIOS pre-made OC profile 8GB DDR4 2x4 1050Ti from Gigabyte Thanks for reading this.
  25. Hi Gamers, Linus-lovers, and PC Enthusiasts. I'm looking to upgrade my rig to a better GPU, I've been stuck on this decision for a while, and I need some advice. If you have any tips, or prior experience please advise! I have done some research behind PSUs, and I am aware wattage is not everything, but I am not hugely smart when it comes to Power Supplies. I was thinking a GTX 1660 Super or a 1060 6gb would be a good pick. Is this doable with my current rig? I really appreciate any help on this. The following are my current specs - I have added as much information as possible. Current specs (I have not OC'd anything) CPU: i7-7700 @3.60GHz (8 CPUs) RAM: 16GB DDR4 MOBO: Asrock H110M-HDV PSU: Zalman ZM400-LE GPU: GTX 1050 (2gb) OS: Win 10 Home 64-bit Drives: 2TB SATA 7200RPM HDD, Crucial MX500 500GB SATA SSD, DVD-RW Drive Thank you for any help or advise you are able to give!
