  1. I've got an open air case and my neighbor's cat peed on it. The PC was turned on as I was copying files. It doesn't boot nor beeps (after drying for 3 days),but my GPU still has display when tested on a friend's rig. I got a new motherboard and PSU but still nothing. The fans would spin for a sec then turn off-- no post, no beeps. I can't test my CPU on friend's rig as we have diferent sockets. Could that damned cat pee shorted my mobo killed my CPU but not my GPU? Most of it was on my GPU and PCIe x16.
  2. I have a dell optiplex 980 i7 that I wanted to convert into a gaming pc. I took it apart outside and spray painted everything black and left everything out to dry. The next day I woke up with my psu sitting in 3 inches of water because the water sprinklers unknowingly went off. So is my psu dead? If so I can’t just replace it for $20 because the motherboard connector is specifically for dell. That would mean I would have to buy a whole another $500 computer. Which I can’t afford because I’m only 12. I heard other people saying that if it has power going through it, it is fryed but if it’s off it just needs to dry. I didn’t have power connected to it, it was completely disconnected. Will it work or is it fryed and what should I do? I can’t really afford to buy a whole another computer.
  3. My dad uses a secondhand WoW mouse for work. He uses the buttons for their programmable macros. He brought it home a couple days ago because it stopped working (not during use, he showed up and it was broken) and I know a lot more about electronics than he does. I popped it open and found some mild corrosion buildup, which I removed to the best of by ability with a small, dry paintbrush. The cable itself is fine (I broke out a multi meter and tested for continuity across it on all the channels). Any advice? If I can't fix it, any recommendations for a replacement mouse? he uses all 14 buttons on a daily basis and wishes there was more of them.

  5. I have a model A1502 MacBook Pro that has experienced some water damage. I have cleaned areas of corrosion and look over a lot of the other components. I should mention that I cleaned it with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol and let dry for a full day outside the enclosure. The first time I tested the system I was able to boot it enter the password and view saved documents and the lot. It was a functional mac book. It worked when I unplugged it form wall power and when it was attached to wall power. However after having it run for 5 mins the back light on the keyboard began to flicker the screen cut out and back it i was able to power it down thought the menus. The keyboard, track pad, back light, audio jack, speakers and storage all worked. What component failure could cause this??
  6. Hey guys. This is my first post been a ltt subscriber on youtube for over a year and figured id use the forum for the first time. Keyboard: corsair k70 rapid fire so i spilled a cup of tea on my keyboard. It had some lemon juice in it, no sugar or milk. The computer was on and after the spill I immediately went to unplug it from behind the tower. As i was unplugging it it apeared to be hitting a bunch of keys at once. It ended up at the ctrl alt delete window when i unplugged it. I think everything will work once its back together but i disassembled it down to the frame and pcb. Would it be okay to wash it in the tub and let it dry for a week? Is it ok to get water inside the cherry mx switches? I inverted the board to drain the tea after the spill which is why i think the tea might have gotten in the switches and i want to wash it out. Is this a bad idea? I dont want to ruin all the switches since i think only a few might have been affected. But i also want to clean it and make it like new again since it is pretty dirty and i want to take advantage of having my keyboard disassembled lol. Thanks in advance for your suggestions
  7. So, about a week ago I accidentally spilled about a glass of water on to my account aspire 5 laptop keyboard, being the tech savvy guy I immediately turned off the laptop turned it around, disassembled it right away to disconnect the battery and dry everything up, that actually saved the display as the internal connector was already corroding. Now, I actually saved the machine, but it seems like some water sipped in between the membranes of the keyboard, rendering it completely useless (but not burnt or utterly damaged). I can confirm the laptop works as it turns on when I'm lucky enough that the power button decides to work properly (as the damn button is embedded in the keyboard) but holding the laptop at the wrong angle causes the button to be read as been pushed. Now I've tried to locate a diagram for the board so I can temporarily put an independent power button with no luck (it's a Wartortle_BS if someone has more luck than me). So, oh wise ltt forum, what can I do? I've tried resting only the keyboard in rice and sealing it with a bunch of silica gel in a bag for 2 days. Now I'm thinking on baking it at 100°C but I'm afraid it would ruin it for good in the process, or giving it a bath in 99% isopropyl alcohol. I'm also searching for replacements in the meantime but I didn't find the right language and the ones I found come separate from the chassis, and I'm not in the mood of removing the damn rivets and gluing the new keyboard. I'm attaching the picture of my keyboard's label if someone's interested. Sorry for the long post and thank you for your replies. UPDATE: So, after numerous tries with the alcohol and the hairdrier I just had to give up. For the record, If your power button is part of the keyboard, buy the cheapo silicon cover for the keyboard, the damn part is essential for the normal functioning of the laptop. if you spill anything on that you're SOL. Now, I had to commision a friend of mine to buy a replacement keyboard in the capital, since I wasn't able to get the part in the town I live... friggin embedded power buttons... UPDATE: So yeah, I found the replacement and got to the job of replacing the keyboard, that meant melting about 70 plastic rivets to remove it, carefully reshaping them to place the new keyboard and melting them back to hold the new part, the whole endeavour took me about 4 hours, including laptop dissassembly and reassembly. if someone reads this, please get those cheap silicon keyboard covers if you plan to have liquids anywhere near the laptop, cuz having to do this is a REAL pain in the butt
  8. Alright I have a lot of back story, but the current problem is this; When I turn my computer on the LED and fans turn on (everything is normal), but none of my 2 displays recognize the computer. Even without the GPU it gives me the same result. On my motherboard when I boot, my debug LEDs react as following (CPU LED lights on and turn off, DRAM LED lights on and turn off, the VGA and BOOT LEDs do not react, with or without my GPU installed. To try and fix this I reset the CMOS, the method I used was to remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 5-10 minutes. When I booted after performing the CMOS reset the result I got from a boot without my GPU was the same as the former. However, when I re-installed my GPU after resetting the CMOS my boot was as follows, my computer posted and a message telling me my BIOS settings were reset. I ran the setup to enable the XMP profile for my RAM. Once I left the BIOS it began the "Automatic Repair" (Because I did a lot of force shutdowns because my computer wouldn't POST. It started the "Automatic Repair" but it froze on "Preparing Automatic Repair" (It was not a "loop", the dots that are supposed to be turning weren't there). I left it on that screen for about 5-10 minutes, nothing happened. After waiting, I force shutdown and that's where I am today. It's very random when it decides to POST then freeze or to simply not POST. Time for everything that led to that situation because I believe it will help a lot with answers to my problem. To begin, my case has an exposed top (like it has holes for air circulation), and about a week ago I dropped about 50ml (1.7 oz) in my computer through the top. When this happened I was in the middle of a game, my computer instantly blue screened (I am sorry I didn't take a pic or read the error message) and it took about 10-15 seconds for me to react and remove the power from the computer. I proceeded to try and dry my GPU the most I could. The PCB seemed to have caught most of it, but it was dripping a bit when I turned over. That night I laid it on a towel and let it dry overnight. Because of how the computer was orientated the water touched the CPU heatsink/fan, the GPU and the PSU. I figured that the water wouldn't affect the PSU nor the CPU because it didn't get in anywhere important (ie: On the unexposed part of the PSU and the fan blades of the CPU fan). The next morning I didn't put my GPU back in right away I was waiting for my friend to give me a second opinion on what to do next (I wanted to try and clean it). Now my memory is a bit hazy but I am 90% sure that the morning after the incident the computer was working normally without the GPU (I was using integrated graphics and it was working). My friend agreed and recommend I should remove the PCB and try to clean it with q-tips and 70% isopropyl alcohol. I did and let it dry for about an hour or two before putting it back in. Once putting the GPU back in after cleaning it started to work. About 30 minutes after the computer running the computer froze, no error message or nothing. Nothing was responding, my screens were just frozen. After about two minutes I forced shutdown and was no longer POST with or without my GPU. I let it dry overnight once more and the next morning I decide to try again. It booted properly with my GPU and my computer was working fine. I had about 3-4 days where it worked perfectly. On the fifth night about the same freeze as happened prior occurred and when I went to re-boot my computer, it no longer POST. The day before resetting the CMOS I ordered and received a new PSU that I tested and nothing change. Specs: GPU: GTX 980 Ti EVGA CPU: i7 7700k RAM: DDR4 Corsair 8GB x2 MOBO: Z270-A Pro MSI PSU: 650W Corsair Storage: 1 SSD (OS Only) 3 HDD (Games, Programs and Storage) Things I tried: 1: Cleaning GPU with alcohol 2: Remove GPU (Integrated Graphics) 3: Re-seating RAM 4: New PSU (Same Wattage) 5: Resetting CMOS 6: Booting only with my SSD 7: Booting with a USB (Windows Media Creation Tool) TL;DR Spilled water on GPU while playing a game, blue screen and quickly unplugged computer. Next day I cleaned the GPU with isopropyl alcohol and later worked for about 30 minutes before my computer froze (Had to force shutdown). The next day I tried again and it worked perfectly for about 3-4 days then it froze again. After that point I've not been able to POST or if I do manage to POST it freezes (Not a loading loop). Any suggestion or help would very much be appreciated. (I am prepared for the worst ?)
  9. Hello. Let me give some context. Recently spilled water right into the top of my PC, causing it to immediately turn off. I unplugged it, let it sit in the open for a day, and turned it back on. It was working fine except for my ethernet port, which I fixed by getting ethernet to usb. It worked for probably 3 days, and then randomly shut off. Since then, I have not gotten it to make a sound, turn on a light, or start fans. No sign of life. I have tried a new PSU and a new motherboard, every combination of single ram stick with different slots, no sign of life. I just now realized that my new motherboard is the MSI B450M Pro-M2 Max, as opposed to the non-max version. I couldn't see a difference so I looked at the specs and supported RAM speeds are all higher than the non-max version. My RAM is 2400hz, which is not listed in the compatible speeds for this new motherboard. My question is will RAM being slower than the listed compatible speeds cause the PC to not post or start any noise/light/fan whatsoever? I need to be certain of the problem before ordering new stuff because I am a poor student and can't afford the risk of wasting more money because I'm already $140 down from wrong guesses. Any help would be really appreciated. It's been out of commission for about 2 weeks, and because literally all of my responsibilities require that computer working, I have been out of commission for 2 weeks and my boss, my teachers, and my research group are getting frustrated. Rant over. Any ideas?
  10. So I really screwed up last night. I accidentally spilled a beer on my predador 17. And now it doesn't power up. I have taken the panel off, and have cleaned it up. Would it be worth me getting it repaired or just getting a replacement? I love the damn thing. I am so disappointed in myself. I don't really have that much money to get a replacement. I would have to put it on the credit card. Anyone willing to help me repair it. I think it would be a interesting project for me and who ever is involved. Please help. I am so sad. 11. my laptop (Asus ROG Strix G GL531GU) won't boot now, it was on lock screen it freezed, showed me the error " your PC ran into a problem and we will restart it for you " and then it showed the ROG logo but never restarted, the keyboard started flashing red light and that's it, no other response. I tried to hard restart it (pressing the power button for 30 secs) but it didn't work. My laptop is under warranty so the first thing i did was visit the service center, submitted my laptop. I got a call from them on the next day saying that your laptop has corroded from inside, it is water damaged and its not covered under warranty. I know for sure that there was no water damage to the laptop at all. I remember my laptop heat sink turned black, they were all copper and shiny when the laptop was new but overtime in 8 months it turned black and that what the service center guy is calling corrosion. I looked up on the internet and found that it must be some bios issue (bcz of keyboard flashing) how should i make them understand this? they are just trying to blame me for water damage rather than accepting the issue. According to me there is no way that laptop shows " PC ran into a problem error " if its water damage or corrosion issue. And i suppose heat sink turning black is pretty common. 12. Hello everyone, Greetings, I recently fucked up my R9 270x by spilling some 70% iso on it while trying to clean my cpu heatsink while the PC was still running, why did I do something that stupid? Because not only does diluted alcohol fuck electronics it fucks your head too. After I spilled a bottle cap's worth of iso on my card, it still ran fine without any problems (at that time) and I just gamed on it for the night thinking the high temperature will dry it out.But the next morning when I turned on my PC it didn't give me a display, at that moment I knew I fucked up.But after multiple restarts and a few prayers to the Omnissiah it worked and everything was right in the world. Now this practice of restarting my PC a few times before getting the GPU to work continued for about 3-4 days until one day it just won't give me a display no matter how many times I restarted my PC the card would just spin it's fans and that's it.The thing finally died. Now I cannot buy a new GPU,not unless I sell a kidney or indulge in illegal activities considering the fuckstorm that is today's market. So for the time being I am using my old GT 640,ever heard of that? IT'S ABYSMAL the fucking thing is a potato with fans. So I can't buy a new card and want to play BF-4,that only leaves me with one option, that is to repair my 270x. Now I really don't know if I can pull this off or not but I am going to give it my best.A visual inspection showed no "bad" capacitors or other components as my knowledge is limited to "does it have black soot round it?" so I have ordered a multimeter with capacitance measurement and I plan on doing the painfully long task of checking each and every capacitor on the card and then replacing it with a new one, now I can replace an electrolytic cap because those are easy to solder but I don't know how the fuck on earth am I going to replace a ceramic one because those things are the size of......Linus' dick.... Well they're almost microscopic. So if anyone here is experienced in this matter then please share some valuable advice with me as I don't really know what the fuck I am doing,I mean I can solder things and that's about it,so any advice is much appreciated. Thank you.
  13. ill start from the beginning ordered my HBA+ cables about 2 weeks ago my LSI sas 9207-8i from amazon showed up yesterday a day early, came all the way from china , well amazon had there in-house delivery service do the final leg for some stupid reason , they left the HBA along with the 8087 to sata cables in the amazon yellow envelope package outside of my house in the pouring rain , the card is trash ive already ordered a new one after calling amazon , person from amazon wouldn't stop saying were sorry ect . i have a mail box at the street which the card+cables would of fit no problem , they had to walk past it to put it where they did , but they didnt. the cables are sealed well in there plastic baggie, they didn't want to refund them since they are packaged well since there is no moister in the plastic bags the cables are in , i think they are safe to use or am i wrong ? i dont want to screw around since im attaching 8tb reds+ gold to this . since they wanted it back asap . the box had water coming out of it for the controller , left it behind my server exhaust to try and dry the box out enough to mail it back . didn't think UPS would take a package dripping . its mostly dry now the box for the HBA. here is one of the sas cables images to save time .i have a few of them but they are all the same , also have a port expanded ordered but they hasn't show up yet
  14. I have(had now...) a msi z270 sli and today i spilled some water over the case, some of it went inside the computer, i unpluged the power cord and went quickly downstairs to get it dry. When i made sure there's no water on any component, pluged in averything again and the pc turned on but i had no video signal then i noticed one of the "ez debug" led was light up, it was de cpu led, then i went to the usar manual and it means "cpu not recognized or failure" so i checked if there was some water in the socket but it was dry as desert, pluged everything again and the hole thing does not turn on any more. Some thoughts? I'm fine with my motherboard dying but i wanna know what happend.
  15. As the topic says, about 10 minutes ago a pipe for our dishwasher upstairs broke and got to my PC. My guess is that the GPU is definitely fried, but I was wondering if it's even worth trying to salvage anything else
  16. Hi everybody, I just wanted a fun project to work on. I left my 4G HTC Evo out in the rain about 2 years ago. It clearly doesn't turn on anymore. Any chance of breathing new life into this thing? I realize that's unlikely. What components could I switch out to give it a chance? I imagine if the logic board is dead, than there's really no point in trying, but I thought I would just ask. Thanks for any help in advance!
  17. Hey techies, I own a Moto G 2nd Gen (Android 6.0), and I am on a holiday to Greece when I dropped my phone in to a small pond. After about 3 seconds I grabbed it out of the water again. Once I grabbed it I instantly woke it from standby (which I now regret according to other internet posts) and dried it (somewhat) with my shirt. It was working properly, I even recorded a video to test if the mic/camera were still OK. But then after putting it back in my pocket to return to the apartment, I woke it again after about 3 minutes; NOTHING. I tried turning it on a few times and after a while I started shaking it heavily to see if the water would fall out, which worked because 2 drops landed on my arm and it turned on again. I left it in the sun (car dashboard, removed back) to dry a bit more and when I got to the appartment I started using the phone normally. And then suddenly the screen went blue and audio stopped working. After about 5 - 10 seconds it turned itself back on again. This happened again about 2 hours later. It is now about 3 hours after I dropped it. I will use rice/towels tonight when I go to sleep. What to do? Also ask for more information if necessary. - ReThorb_
  18. So about a 4 months ago I dropped my S6 in some water. It was only halfway submerged so the Liquid Damage Indicator never got tripped. When I turned in on it was overheating so turned it off. When I got home from the lake I put the phone in rice for a few hours I was being very impatient and took it out. Some of the bottom touch buttons we not working. So I put it back in some rice for the night. It worked from there besides in not charging fully almost every time. Then few months later I started to get Battery overheating problems, I would let it sit for a few. Then charged it for a few. Then it got worse it would only charger like that when it was off. It wasn't a huge deal because I'm not in school so don't go on my phone to often besides Pokemon Go ;). Then it said I could update to Marshmallow, so I did. 30 seconds into the "new" Android it said my phone was overheating. So I did all the steps to "fix" overheating the last step was factory reset. After that my phone was overheating from all the google apps it had to redownload. So now it is just overheating randomly and the battery is still overheating when charging. So I don't know if I need new battery, new micro usb port or some other thing fix. I keep trying to do research but keep finding different things.
  19. So yesterday, a slightly annoying event happened.. I'd gotten changed ready to get in the hot tub, put my phone in my trunk pockets because I was waiting for 30 mins or so. I get in the hot tub and after about 10-15 mins I feel something falling out my pocket... My iPhone was now sodden. Then to add on to this, the day before I put a new screen on, loosing all the waterproofability that it had in the first place if the screen wasn't cracked. I got out, dried it off and put it in a bowl of rice. After we had finished in the hot tub, I took it out and shook out the water as much as I could. I then grabbed some silica gel and put it around the phone with rice around that to for the night and left it in the boiler cupboard. Its been in there about 14 hours so I took it out and checked if I could shake any water out, nothing comes out. Should I try to power it on or what? Thanks, Doug
  20. last saturday i got y sony z3 back from my insurance company since my old one was very broke and today while i was in the bath it slipped out of my hand and went into the water and now the screen no longer works. by went into the water i mean the whole phone wasnt submerged it was only about 3cm in at the bottom for less than 5 seconds but the screen no longer works. and i am really annoyed at this since the hone is rated at being fully submerged at 1.5m for 30 minutes of use and it broke after 3cm for less than 5 seconds. so i was wondering can i complain to my insurance company about this since it should have been fine even though it is not or would the company not do anything about it. or would i t be better to get in contact with sony about this whole ordeal?
  21. You know, you drop your phone in the toilet. You find out it won't turn on. You cover your phone in rice for a day. Then it works. I know the rice absorbs the water! That part is obvious. But how does it absorb the water from INSIDE of your phone? It's not like the rice can actually get inside your phone because the case and the screen is in the way. So how does this age old trick actually work?
  22. Hello So some time ago I dropped my Moto X 2014 in water. Somehow, water got into the phone without doing to much damage. Anyway. After drying it, a quick disassembly and blowing some water out using air pressure, I tried starting it up again. And everything worked! The camera worked, the screen reacted. Even the speakers... After some use it got a little warmer and the phone completely started flipping. The screen showed deformed images and started glitching. This image I found on the internet somewhat shows what I mean. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/drZc4ZPcuvo/maxresdefault.jpg Eventually the screen completely turned of and stopped working! After it had cooled down I was able to recreate the exact same circumstances over. I even completely wiped my phone to make sure it wasn't a software glitch... Anyways... Here's my crazy idea. My father has access to a vacuum chamber. Since the lowering in pressure also lowers the boiling temperature of the water, it will vaporize and the water could flow out. In theory... Now my question was, what are the extreme circumstances for my smartphone for air pressure. In other words, will it survive this or not? Could the amoled panel or other components be affected in lasting ways? Are there some things I need to watch? I tried figuring this out myself, but since information is scarce. I thought it would be safer to ask. I already pulled out my battery and camera unit to be sure (I know Li-ion batteries can be dangerous and sensitive) I will not insult you if you think it's safe and when I try it out, it breaks. I am trying this completely at my own risk, knowing that this will totally void my warranty (as did dissassembling my phone and dropping it in water) (warranties on phones suck most of the time). I want to try alternative methods instead of handing my phone to repair shops, who ask (to my oppinion) way to much money for the repairs (I know parts cost a whole lot of money) (In my country anyway). If you can help me, any information or advise is welcome! Thanks for your help. Reds Duty
  23. Hey guys! Recently posted about a spill I had happen on my PC, and I've replaced all parts that I can test given my current supplies. Running a new power supply, and a new motherboard, Upon atempted boot up, it started up for like 5 seconds before promptly shutting down. Now it loops these quick turn ons and turn offs until I kill the power on the PSU. It doesn't do 5 second start ups now, only quick one second ones. I disconnected basically everything and have my rig barebones on the motherboard box with a single ram dim inserted, CPU in (with heat sink) and the power supply powering the CPU and board. Still does this. I did ALL the troubleshooting online, but can't find anyone mentioning how a computer behaves when the Motherboard shorts, but is replaced. Everyone says it's the PSU or the MOBA, but I've replaced both. So is it the processor? Thanks in advance for any help. This has been an absolute living hell.
  24. My h100i gave up today and I now have corsairs cooling goo all over my pc. I am trying to dry it and clean it best as I can but I need some advice as to if corsairs warranty covers their hoses popping off and if any parts are broken what shall I do from there.
  25. Hi Ltt so I've been trying to water cool my rig and long story short both of my reference 980 ti cards got some splashes of ek pastel cooling liquid on them (I know I'm a d%@ckhead) When they were splashed the system was completely disconnected from power (had been for about 3 hours) and since they got wet they haven't been powered at all. I took them apart (down to bare pcb) and paper towel dried the drops (about 4 per card) and then used q tips on the smaller spaces that were wet. And that's where I am now. I'd like some advice for my next move, there is still some orange puddle residue on the boards, how do I go about cleaning that? And since I work in an industrial kitchen I have access to a graphic card sized food dehydrator, is this a good way to dry them? ( it's an open box that blows air from 30 to 90 degrees C onto a shelf) Help me Linus tech tips, you are my only hope
