Hi, Am wondering - How to have VMWare Player or VirtualBox application running on smallest Tiny Core Linux (as host operating system and not virtualized guest) for running virtualized operating systems as well make use of x64 bit architecture and multi-core CPUs. If not possible which other "Thinnest OS" will support x64 Bit Multi-Core Virtualization with VMWare Player or VirtualBox ?

I work for 8 years with 3d rendering and advertising, and for personal reasons I'm going to work from home now. I'm going to set up a home office, and I've seen the need to have a NAS and a render farm, but I don't have much space. My question is: do I mount two systems in a single case (Enthoo mini XL DS), or do I mount two systems using a stronger processor and virtualization using Unraid? Hello All! I'm currently building a Home Virtualization Server to run a Ubuntu Web Server VM, and Video Surveillance VM. My specs are listed below. While doing some research I came across this video and a lightbulb turned on. You see I have a MacBook and no PC, So if I could pop a GPU in this guy for games and rendering in After Effects I would be so happy! I have heard mixed reviews on ESXi GPU compatibility. Is it feasible to passthrough a AMD RX480 to a Windows 10 VM with minimal performance loss. If not could anyone recommend a card. I don't plan to use a dedicated monitor as this guy will be in a server closet. My plan is to use Steam in home streaming. I know this is a unique config but I figured that I have a ton of compute power sitting idle, why not use it? And yes I know I will lose performance by virtualizing this and using steam in-home streaming, but I am willing to live with up to a 20% performance loss if it means I don't have to build a dedicated PC. Yes I know vSphere is Windows only, I use VirtualBox on my Mac. Is this a option or should I stick with something like Un-RAID. I would prefer to use ESXi as I am somewhat experienced with it. I look forward to what the community has to say! VIDEO. 8 (or is it 10?) Hi there, I'm from South Africa and I would like to build a monster 2 user 1 desktop PC. The budget is a difficult topic because the same product in the states costs around 30% more here and Amazon doesn't ship to Africa. The products listed below will give you a rough idea of what I'm willing to spend though. The build: Motherboard X99 Rampage V Extreme edition 10 CPU i7-6950X (I'm wondering if this is necessary as I'm sure the 5960X would do but it is an older gen. The local price difference is about R10 000($750) though) RAM Corsair Vengenge Pro DDR4 32GB (4x8GB) 3200MHZ GPU MSI GTX 1070 SEA HAWK Liquid Cooled OC edition (x2) PSU Corsair RM1000x CPU cooler Corsair H100i V2 SSD Suggestions? (Most major brands available) HHD Suggestions? (Most major brands available) Screens Suggestions? (Most major brands available) Looking for a 1440p to get the most out of the 1070 Peripherals To be decided on later Case PC will be built into a table and covered with a perspex top I'm open to any ideas or changes to the build. The idea is to build something that will last for quite a while and that will draw attention as a showpiece at LAN events for at least until the end of 2018. I would also like to do another build some time in the future to improve on this. The idea will be for a Pro gaming team (usually consisting of 5 players) to game competitively from one station.

Hi, today i tried making a vm with windows 98 for a video on my youtube channel. However, when trying to run it, i got an error message telling me Virtualization wasn't enabled. I went to my pc Bios and checked if it was on. It was enabled. I went back to Virtualbox and tried again. Still didn't work. https://gyazo.com/29bc2d6c3d4fb7237c4497ac66d34bea If you can help me send a reply ASAP. Thanks.

Hello all I'm looking for a laptop for programming, virtualization and some engineering graphics editing. Currently my system has i5 4210m, 8GB, 1TB hdd. I've gone through some systems from lenovo and dell. All of them are coming with i7 6500u or i7 7500u, 16GB, 1TB had. Now my question is how good is i7 6500u or 7500u for Virtualization and engineering graphics editing?Pre installed Windows is not mandatory for me as most of the time I use Linux. My budget is around $1000

DONT REPLY WITH PICS PLS Hey LTT peeps, Just received a notification from FedEx that my S8+ has shipped. Dope. Checking order status... 1 S8+ in midnight black. Dope. Wait. ...1 S8+ in midnight black +35? oh gawd, oh no. Nononono! 0_0 So... I only ordered 7 For my team. Did Verizon really make a $24,000 Order mistake? I wonder why these haven't changed their order status... (I'm sure not everyone will believe me, so im going to find a way to take a screen shot of all these with my #s blocked out.) Moving on, what do y'all think about Dex and its use with AWS? Amazon Workstations, other than being ridiculously expensive, has worked wonders in my experience. Being able to use your phone for access to a virtual machine with a keyboard and mouse is a very cool prospect... Until you see that the ethernet port on the dock is only 100Mb. Why not gigabit???

I'm looking to build a very basic, non-gaming VM server for home office use. I need 2 windows VMs, and a Linux desktop (Ubuntu - which will probably be the hypervisor) (so, three keyboards/mice/monitors). I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with hardware passthrough virtualization with Ryzen - which I find attractive due to the price point/cores+threads. As I haven't built a non-gaming centric computer in a while, I'd like to know what the cheapest video cards I could get away with and the main board that would work with pass through. Thanks,

Hello, I have this idea, i know it's probably terrible, but it's inspired partly by one of Linus's videos (the one where he built that super jank desktop with server parts). Also his other videos where he used virtualization (two gamers one pc, seven gamers one pc, etc.). So basically what I want to do is take an old rack mount server and virtualize a desktop on it and pass through a graphics card. I know most cheap servers are too old to have useable pcie slots and most are only x8 (i know you can saw off the end, but that's more jank than i'm wiling to go). But maybe there are some servers with graphics compatibility? I'm probably gonna have it in a closet, so I'm not really concerned by noise. I'm thinking I'll use unRaid for the vms, which is cool cause then I can use the machine for other things like kodi or whatever. I could even throw in other graphics cards and run a whole 'nother vm. So yeah, a rack mount server, unRaid, throw in a graphics card and pass it though to the vm, and use it for other stuffs. I need suggestions for what type of decommissioned rack server would support x16 graphics cards and any other suggestions, comments, just any information you'd like to share. Also, if you have a build idea that goes along with this, please share. yeet, thanks, out.

Hey, so I have a weird idea. This might be obvious to some of you. But is it possible to create an overpowered pc that stays in one room in the house, and then have multiple virtual clients around the house, (Easy enough so far) but then each of those client runs dynamically so the resources (gpu horsepower and cpu horsepower as well as one central file storage for non-os data) are shared where they need to be, but also, the user profiles are shared so you could switch from one computer to the other and pull up everything you had running on the other station.

While running Ubuntu or any other Linux distro on a pretty much straightforward, I can't find any .ISO disk images for Chrome OS. I found something from here and here but it's a .img file which virtual box doesn't support. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Do you know any method @Comic_Sans_MS @Ryan_Vickers?

I am building a new PC/workstation, the goal is to have something to run VMware, hyper-V, etc. Probably 6 or so VMs, and a few virtual networks, but also something I can add onto, put in RAID cards, etc. I got a Coolermaster HAF-X case which will do up to an EATX MOBO. I have a 6800K CPU that I ordered before I knew the 6850K was better, but I think I'll deal with the performance hit of fewer PCI-E channels than spending the $250 extra for the 6850K. I would also like the board to have like 10 SATA ports, maybe even some SAS ports. DUAL NIC card would be nice. I also like the boards that can flash bios from USB with no RAM or CPU, or repair from a USB stick. The boards with 2+ bios also seem like could be handy. A board that has a lot of expansion slots though, and ability to take a 6850, etc later on if I change. Not sure I would use, but if a board also supports Xeon CPU that could be a benefit. Two to four 4 pin fan haders would also be nice so I can control the fans better, and turn them down if they are making too much noise, and the system is staying cool still. I was originally thinking supermicro, and Linus seemed to like but seems the bulk of their MOBOs have like 3-star reviews so thinking probably just avoid them totally. I also looked at Intel MOBOS, but nothing they seemed to offer was a good fit. That leaves MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, Asrock, EVGA (that I know of). I like the looks of the Asrock x99 Extreme 11, but it's like $600 and seems reviews are not that good either. The EVGA classified looked promissing too, but not sure maybe best choice. Also a few similar ones like Asrock x99 WS-E, ASUS rampage V E10, ASUS x99 deluxe, MSI X99 godlike gaming carbon also looked promising. I like the looks of some of the gamer type boards, but I also want something that is more server like. I have mixed feelings about RGB, some of the boards are like yellow, white, red accents and black to me just look strange. Any tips, sugestions, etc. Thanks.

I have installed windows 10 on kvm using virt-manager with host os arch Linux and made integrated graphics passsthrough and it worked, but. Cpu performance is bad and it decets cpu model uncorrectly. If I enable "copy host cpu info" it enable cpu model amd opteron g5, while my actual is a10-7850k on kaveri architecture. this is what guest sees cpu like this and it's only single core, dispite selecting 4 cores: please help, gpu performance is near-native but cpu is very low. It much slower than virtualbox or VMware. Sorry for messy explanation, my English is very bad.

Hello! I have a problem, and many have asked this before but, why is performance in VMware (or any virtualization software) so bad? Everybody I have found who ask this question is running hardware not capable of running VMs, but my hardware should be capable of it. All OS's have this bad performance, but especially Windows 10 is bad. Choppy animations and slow performance in general. VMware tools are always insalled. The machine was dedicated 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM. This is always the case with all VMs. Core i7 4790K, 16 GB of RAM, GTX 770, host is Windows 7 running VMware 12.5.

I'm looking to build a multipurpose virtualization server/workbench. I want to use it as my main developer machine but I would also like to make use of virtualization for testing, deployment and learning purposes. It would be nice if I could use it for some casual gaming as well, although nothing super fancy since I want it mainly for developing and virtualization Can someone please help me with the hardware I should aim to buy? I understand you can buy some refurbished hardware (servers) cheap on eBay but I'm a little concerned about the noise since I will be having the machine near me. I wouldn't have any problem buying used hardware as long as it is really helpful. Should I look for a dual Xeon build to help my virtualization requirements? How much RAM should I be looking for? I'm open to read recommendations from you guys about what should I do! Budget: Ideally under $1,000 since I have to factor importing taxes and shipping to my country No peripherals required (monitor, keyboard/mouse) since I already have them.

Hi, I'm a consultant working primarily on Web development, micro-controller (such as the STM32) and FPGA. Some of my works runs in environments use between three to about twenty different machines with different responsibilities. Using Vagrant and VirtualBox, I manage to pop about 6 to 8 VM before it runs too slow with my MacBook Pro, and for that reason I would like to build a workstation. Since I may pay between $5,000 CAD to $8,000 CAD for that, I don't want to mess up. The last time I build a computer was in the early stage of the Pentium IV with HyperThread, and AMD was cheaper and often better. My knowledge are not up-to-date in that regard. Main Question: AMD or Intel? I was going to buy a LGA-2011 v3 motherboard in the first place, since all my "devops" friends tells me that "intel is worth the price". But I've heard about AMD Ryzen series and how it outperforms Intel per dollar except in gaming . Since my main objective is to virtualize, should I considered a AMD Ryzen architecture ? I know it is a new product from AMD and Intel has made their mark with the Xeon E5 series. If I stick with Intel Technology, I saw the LGA-2011 v3 and v4. What is that? There is actually sockets with the same number of pin but that are not compatible? Or does the v4 support the v3 processors? What about the LGA-2066, is it coming soon? Thanks

So I'm putting together a new system with a budget roughly around 2k. I play lots of games and do 3D work and am a bit of a data pack rat. What do you guys think about a system like this running unraid or something so that I can use my system to run 1440 games and have a server with the red drives as a nas and the ability to run a small mine craft server or something. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/killjoy5545/saved/hZGD3C

Hello! I am in need of a server configuration for my company for around $2000-3000 (with GPU) or more if needed It will be used for KVM Virtualization - 1 Windows and 1 Ubuntu server DIALux software for 3D modeling [Windows] GALA software [Windows] Web server [Ubuntu] NAS (NextCloud) [Ubuntu] Minimal requirements as I see would be CPU: 4C/8T RAM: 16 GB GPU: Quadro ili FirePro 3 SSD (120GB) one for Host (or usb) and two for Guests (We already have HDD) What components would you recommend for my needs? Furthermore, what software would you recommend for virtualization? unRAID Basic (6 devices would be adequate for now)? Crude kvm/qemu? Thank you!

Virtualization and Gaming PC for $4k [$30 Prize!]
Chepto19 posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hello I have a $4k budget for a Virtualization and Gaming PC. I'm looking for PCI Express SSD (very high speed) and 7200RPM+ Storage, RAM should be over 32gb, for the rest I'll let you offer me. If you can include the monitor, please do so, the size should be 27 inches maximum. I'm really not experienced in choosing hardware, I've never built a desktop from scratch before, but I know how to assemble it. Will give $30 in Bitcoins (https://bitcoin.org/) to the one who has offered the build I will purchase. Many thanks -
Hey guys, For my work i currently need to build a little computer lab (its a school) we have a byod policy but nonetheless we need a lab. I was gonna simply get 10-15 systems from normal vendor(dell,hp,acer, asus etc) ($500) a Computer performance requirements are not high a simple dual core i3 level with 4-6 GB of ram should be sufficient.Use would be basic productivity work in Ms office 2016. Some programming work and various IDEs, and maybe some light Photoshop work. Now my question is would be better from a money point of view to build a server like Linus did for the gaming ( not as pricey tho) Im assuming for each VM id need a separate GPU. So maybe 4-8 VMs per Tower. As for budget max id spend is 7500 CAD for components excluding monitors and Keyboard/mouse etc. So what do you guys recommend is this even possible

So I been looking to build a new computer made for virtualization, which means support for VT-d is a must. Currently I have this part list http://pcpartpicker.com/list/G8XYXH. The reason why I didn't add any storage, is because I plan to use my drives from my current computer . I have also been thinking about water cooling, to make the computer run quieter. I'm just worried about leaks on the graphic card. Note: I can as max go to up 1.4k USD. But unless I get much better performance, I would rather stay below it.
