Hey all, I'm a dedicated gamer and software dev and I wanted to get some feedback on a business idea I had. As a student I could barely afford the computer I was using for homework much less a gaming rig. I want to provide an alternative option for those in similar situations. I would like to rent out VMs on a subsciption based or pay-as-you-go model that the average consumer could use easily so long as they had a decent internet connection. Because they would be VMs each user could have their own installed apps and not be locked to one service for their games or have to double the cost to pay for 2 subs at a time. With how computing has changed recently I am unsure if there would be any interest in the project. Any feedback and poll results are welcome. Cheers!

I'm looking at scratch-building a PC to use at home to study cybersecurity and in the future when I go to college for computer science. I want it to have blazing-fast storage and plenty of RAM so it runs flawlessly for day-to-day use and also so it can handle running Virtual Machines, dual booting with several OS's, and anything else I may want to experiment with. I want to build it now so I can use it the next few months, but it'll be about 2 years before I go to college and start using it heavily, and I might want to upgrade it then if it makes sense. I've got two builds I'm pretty happy with, one AMD and one Intel, both 6 cores/12 threads, and I'm trying to decide between them. The AMD has the potential to add a second PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, and the ability to potentially be upgraded to a Ryzen 9 5950X with 16 cores/32 threads in several years. The Intel is limited to a single PCIe 4.0 SSD, with any additional drives being PCIe 3.0. Additionally, I believe the biggest upgrade it could get would be to an i9-11900K which is only 8 cores/16 threads. It does however have integrated graphics, and I didn't want to buy a graphics card soon because this computer won't primarily be for gaming. Now frankly 1TB of PCIe 4.0 speed storage is proably overkill, and if I did want to upgrade it I could just get a 2 TB stick, so I don't know how important that is. The more important question is how much does the upgrade path matter? Because besides core count I'd rather go with Intel, but AMD having upgrade potential to 16 gives me pause. I've heard more cores matters more for things like productivity, so how useful will 8/12/16 cores really be for running Virtual Machines, DAWs, moving large files or other intensive tasks I might want to do? Advice appreciated. No need to budget for peripherals or monitor or anything. Just looking for the tower here. Suggestions on a decent cooler for overclocking appreciated. ~$100 Also I know nothing about graphics cards, what would be good for this rig? (willing to spend $400-600 when prices are normal again) 1440p & VR would be cool if that's possible. Pretty happy with my builds at this price, but am willing to save more if I'm missing something important. I'm partically new to the vm side on pc. But today I decided to install and try out macOS Big Sur on virtualbox VM and see if i can use it as my daily OS for studying since its more minimal and less clutter. I've assigned 4cores and 8gb of ram to my VM but when I start the VM it's really laggy and can be considered unusable. I'm running a i7 8750H and 16gb of ram so allocating 4cores should not be a problem ? I tried to allocated only 2 cores and 8gb of ram to the vm but it is also laggy and hard to use. I've already enabled hardware acceleration and Vt-X. Besides that, there's no audio output on the vm system so please does anyone has similar encounters

Good day all. I'm having a difficult time finding info on this, but it might be due to me not wording it correctly. I work from home 2 days a week, and things are painfully slow. My work has us using a Citrix VM that uses a VPN to connect to the works network and systems. I do not use a VPN for my personal computer. I would be very appreciative if anyone can provide me info regarding: 1) If I move the VM window to my 2nd monitor and open up a streaming service, game, etc. on my primary monitor, would my work be able to see whats on my primary monitor? 2) While the VM (with it's VPN) is open/active, is my internet traffic viewable to my employer on just the VM, or is my personal computer's traffic included? I heard from a co-worker that while the VM is open/active, all of my internet traffic on my personal computer is either being routed through the VM VPN, or allows my work to monitor all of my traffic. Is this correct? Thanks for reading.

Summary Someone figured out how to run windows XP in Minecraft by mirroring a virtual machine onto a minecraft game and allowing you to build your own computer within the game. It's like pc building simulator in minecraft lmao. My thoughts So it got me thinking, who better to test this stuff, push it to it's limits and make an awesome video out of it than LTT? There's very few people who could attempt to run windows 10 on this mod, utilize the majority of it's options and play Doom in Minecraft, or even play Minecraft in Minecraft in Minecraft in Minecraft. The opportunities are endless. Sources https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGD3cbyT-hI https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/fabric-api https://github.com/Delta2Force/MCVmComputers

I'm setting up a program to trade Fifa 21 coins (in game currency) to sell online, but to do it, I'll need to set up 15 virtual machines within a desktop. The program I'm running uses about 2gb ram per instance, and essentially simulates a single google chrome tab. I'm thinking 64gb ram should be enough, what type of processor would I likely need? Also, ideally this would be a mini pc, any recommendations besides intel nuc? Thanks for any help!

So there is this application/browser that many colleges around the New York area use to administer tests and exams online. The application in question is called Respondus Lockdown Browser. This browser basically is supposed to replace your traditional browsers (chrome, firefox...) when you're trying to take an exam. When lockdown browser is open it prevents you from switching to another application to prevent cheating. I thought I was smart and had the idea of creative a VM and using respondus within the VM so that I can freely switch between the VM and and my host pc to search up questions during the exam. I tried it and you can see how that turned out with the photo I attached to this post. Does anyone know of any parameters I can put in the .vmx file of the VM or is there anyway I can bypass this VM detection. I really need to figure this out by the end of October 7th. Here is the prepaid link to download Lockdown Browser if anyone wants to have a shot at bypassing this<Removed by staff> Please help me!!!

I recently acquired a 2U server blade with dual 10-core Xeons, 64GB RAM, 2.5TB of SSDs, dual redundant 900W PSUs, 4 RJ-45 NIs (not incl. the IMM port) and figured I'd do my dream server build, but I'm struggling a little. My plan is to run Linux Mint as a host OS for VMware Workstation Pro 16 and run VMs for: pfsense OpenVPN Home Assistant Plex Media Server I'm currently having trouble getting Mint to connect to the Internet through pfsense. I can ping the default gateway IP successfully in CLI, WAN and LAN configure in pfsense, pfsense can ping Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS, but I can't access the Webconfigurator for pfsense or open a website in Firefox. I'm fairly certain I have VMware's network settings correct, but I'm a bit rusty on my network admin skills, so I'm not sure if I'm using the best subnet settings, etc. My biggest concern is that I don't have network settings correct for Mint or pfsense. It feels like the bridged virtual network connection just isn't working. I've tried different default gateway IPs, turned DHCP on and off, restarted my modem... I just don't understand what is going wrong. Don't hesitate to ask trivial questions. It may sound like I'm decently well-versed in this field, but my knowledge of this terminology is better than my practical knowledge, even though I do have some coursework and job experience with some of it. Any help would be appreciated, as well as suggestions for a better way to accomplish my goal. I'm not willing to give up on running this all on this machine, but I'll be honest that I have no idea if VMs and Mint were the right move.

Hello! So I have gone through the entire setup process for a Hyper-V Machine Setup, I have RTSS, Virtual Audio Drivers, Parsec, GPU Drivers, and everything, but I am wondering how I do the "1 pc 2 gamers" thing, because I cannot get it to work... how do I do the thing to do that? can I do it with a low end old gaming pc (integrated graphics)? Or can I do it with the local pc? just with two sets of peripherals plugged in? Or do I have to have another computer? Would love some answers thanks!!

I get the difference between of VirtIO/QXL vs GPU passthrough. The latter is used with a Windows 11 VM with my GTX 1060, and the former with Linux distros I'm playing with, but I don't understand how VirGL compares with GPU passthrough or VirtIO/QXL. From what I understoond VirGL is the middle-ground between GPU passthrough and VirtIO/QXL? My system uses the RX 6900XT Phantom Gaming D as its primary GPU. Since macOS & NVIDIA don't support each other, will VirGL allow me to use macOS in a VM with a decent performance?

Hey all! This is an odd question but I've found myself in a bit of a pickle. I want to run a Windows 10 or 11 VM on my my PC (which is Windows 10 Home). The issue here is Hyper-V is not enabled on Win10 Home. I've found it is possible to enable Hyper-V on Win10 Home edition but it ends up screwing up a few other application (BlueStacks etc). So my thinking is if there is a third party application when I can simply run the VM within Win10 Home, this would be fantastic but I'm a completely newbie when it comes to VM's so I was wondering, can anyone vouch for a decent "idiot-proof" VM software that isnt Hyper-V please? This is for personal use if that's something you'd need to know. Appreciate the help!!!!

As the title says, I'm trying to get an old game (Age of Mythology) to run on Windows 7 since it looks like Microsoft borked support for it in Windows 10 and later. I get it to sucessfully install, but get this error upon launching the game: I'm using VMWare and Windows 7 Home. It looks like it's complaining about my GPU, the link it provides just redirects to the Xbox website (not much help), is there some way I could passthrough my actual graphics card and not the goofy VMware one? I use an RTX-3050 so not sure if that'd even be possible, or solve the problem. Here's the specs of the "virtual GPU" VMware is trying to use: Any advise would be much appreciated!

Alright, I'll try and make this quick. So, I'm trying to install an evaluation version of Windows Server 2022 which can be acquired here, on a VMWare virtual machine. I'm preparing to take my CompTIA A+ exam but I don't have any experience with Active Directory, so I'm creating a domain controller on a VM to play around with it and familiarize myself with its operation. This ISO file from Microsoft is supposed to give you a few months to evaluate the product. However, when I begin the setup on my VM I get this error: This is very confusing, because the ISO is acquired through Microsoft themselves. What might be causing this particular mystery?

Budget (including currency): $1200 - 3500$ USD Country: Bulgaria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I want to Work(programing) on MacOS and game on a Windows on single PC. I hate having to restart to switch OSs. I need good configuration to do so. Other details: There are atleast two options: Running Windows and MacOS on VM Running MacOS(Hackintosh or Native) and running games on Windows VM (Are we there yet?) I need lets say 3 variants: budget, price/performance, performance. I usually prefer second hand hardware. What is the best software solution/configuration to utilize this idea? Is there a LTT video about this?

I'm new to VMs so apologies if this is a stupid question. I want to run a windows 10 VM on a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor. I want it to essentially be a separate computer which my little brother can game on while I get through assignments cause I'm reluctant to go to the library during a pandemic.. It's a beefy PC so it should be able to handle a windows 10 VM running the games he wants to play while I do my work. Just wondering if it's possible and how I do it.

I am a student in college (not a very good one, thus why I'm here asking for help) and I will eventually be in classes where I will need VMware, but that is at least a couple of years out. Currently, I have no experience using virtual machines, but I'm in some development classes that I believe would be improved if I could host XAMPP locally in order to test my php/perl scripting without having to upload it to the student server (which is time consuming during scripting/debugging), so I've concluded that it would probably be best to set up virtual machine capabilities in order to install XAMPP (on Linux, in a VM). I don't have any experience doing any of this, but I think I can figure it out. What I'm wanting to know is which Virtual Machine software suite is most similar to VMware, but FREE, since I really need to learn VMware, but I can't afford it currently (even with the student discount). I don't want to learn a program that will make learning VMware more difficult due to the need to "unlearn" things that operate completely differently, so I'm trying to get whatever free VM software is the closest to VMware in usability/UI. What would serve my needs best? Virtual Box? Hyper-V? Something else? I'd like to stress that I have zero experience with any of this, and I'm just going by what I could find using google search. Am I over-complicating this? I tend to do that. To be clear: I'd like to be able to run php and perl locally on my PC (Windows 10, 64 bit) so that I do not have to upload my webpages that include server-side scripting to the server to see if they work because it is very time-consuming.

Hello everybody, so, I've discovered that some older games (particularly Knights of the Old Republic I) just won't run on Windows 10. I've tried all the fixes, nothing. But they will run no problem on Linux with Windows-Steam installed through Play On Linux... it's just that my Linux laptop is not very powerful, and even in Kotor I have to turn down settings a little bit. Not ideal. Could I just install an Ubuntu VM on my main machine and Windows-Steam through POL there? Or would I run into issues with, say, 3D acceleration? Asking ahead because I really don't wanna go through that just to discover it doesn't work at all... Cheers, John

Hey!! So I'm currently working on a project and need a system that I'll be able to run upwards of 14 ish VMs on! Each VM will be using the internet - nothing too intensive - no gaming or anything like that. If budget is a bit too high may be able to do with 6 or 7 minimum but preferably have the 14 ish on one. Budget & location: Budget is around £1600 ish hopefully including monitors but only if possible. Will be buying in Uk. Aim: Be able so smoothly run around 13-14 VMs that will all just be running internet browsers with nothing too intensive on them. Monitors: At minimum 2 monitors, but 3 would be preferred No preference for screen res size etc Peripherals: Sorted for peripherals If if you need any more info feel free to ask but any help is appreciated!

Here is some context: My company uses an OLD DOS software for product purchasing, distribution, and sales. As it is a 16-bit software and DOS, it must be run on an XP or older OS. Due to aging hardware and older OS compatibility issues, I have decided to try using Virtual Windows XP machines on more modern hardware (ie. Windows 10 x64 machines.) I have set up the virtual machine as Windows XP Professional x86, enabled networking via NAT to the existing network adapter (Intel Lan Adapter.) I have an internet connection on the virtual machine (can get on Google.com with no problem, but I cannot see the server on the network, or any of the other connected workstations for that matter.) Any words of wisdom?
