My Sony VAIO VPCEH1L8E has gradually stopped charging over the past 18 months. At first it would charge intermittently then it would only charge using certain sockets and in the past 6 months it has stopped charging almost entirely. It occasionally charges to no more than 9% then stops. I am looking at replacing the PSU first then the battery. The PSU cable is worn in sections from being caught in covers for recessed floor sockets so needs replacing anyway. Should I purchase a replacement Sony VGP-AC19V33 from eBay or should I purchase a universal laptop charger? Bearing in mind around 5 years ago I upgraded the Core i3-2310m (35W TDP) to a Core i7-2720QM (45W TDP) which was never an option on this model. The CPU appears to boosts very close to its advertised maximum frequency of 3.3GHz when under load so it must be drawing more power than the system was designed for. Just wondering whether the laptop would benefit from a more modern and powerful charging solution. As an aside I would also appreciate any thoughts on purchasing a replacement laptop battery in the UK. There are a lot of online retailers that sell the correct battery but not sure what quality and lifespan I should expect from a third party battery.

Hi everyone, I recently pulled out my old Sony Vaio handheld PC VGN-UX180P from storage and decided to finally replace the cracked screen I broke back in high school (it was kicked on the ground...) and rendered the touch screen unusable. Its a pretty unique little computer, very ahead of its time in terms of features. It runs Windows XP (some later ones came with Vista), has two cameras, a slide up keyboard reminiscent of the old flip phones back then, supports SD cards and a SIM slot and a USB2.0 port. A cool gadget that I'd eventually like to find some use for... So I replaced my screen with a new one from EBAY, but there was an issue with the touch screen - touching anywhere on the screen would peg the mouse pointer to the top of the display, however, I can still move it left or right. I can't move the pointer up and down at all. Note that this only occurs when I touch the screen, I can still use the built in mouse stick to control the pointer while not touching it. Does this seem like an issue with the new display or a bad ribbon cable? I want to know if I should request a refund/replacement for it while I still can. I already tried re seating the ribbon cables and cleaning the contacts with IPA. I also noticed a single dead pixel in this new display, so I'm leaning towards it being a problem with the LCD. Thanks!

I installed Samsung Evo 870 250GB SSD on my Sony Vaio SVE1513ACNB. It is giving Sequential read of 558MBPS, and write of 371 MBPS. When I bootup the system, a buzzing sound comes from near the SATA Case, I held my ear against it. Then I tried boot up the system by SATA connector from same SSD. It couldn't do it BUT I connected it as external storage and it was making a minor buzzing sound when ear is placed near SSD. I don't know if it is normal or not. Though it is a very minor sound and should be normal for electrical devices. Does someone know if SSD should make buzz sound (like electrical buzz sound)? OR Will it damage the PC? Though the HDD had much more sounds like grinding , buzzing etc.

I have laptop which turns 10 next month. I want to change its HDD 500 Gb to SSD . I asked on Sony Support , but they said " its not recommended to do changes with storage as the company has shut down its operations in India " . He didn't bother to explain the technical reason. Is there really something that I shouldn't change it? Also the HDD has aged 10 years. I checked the disk and I've attached the results from this software. Should I use SSD? Edited: Does anyone know what writing/reading speed would I get in this laptop if I use 550MBPS SSD.

Hi I've recently bought a sony vaio laptop and i have a weird problem. I thought that hdd is the problem so i got new ssd and installed windows on it. Laptop at first worked just fine after windows installed. Right after i've turned off laptop to reboot, it didn't go to windows. It shows windows logo, dots spin and screen flashes and nothing. I got it working again after leaving it for a few days. Windows was repairing and it booted up again. I tried even playing on it for a bit to see if it's gonna crash or smth. Nothing happened but i wanted to see if the problem is gone. I've shutdown laptop to see that it won't boot to windows again. Do you know what might be the cause? Procesor is at 100% almost all the time if it helps in anything. I thought maybe it's getting too hot and it needs to cooldown to boot to windows properly. I don't know what is the reason. Hope you can help me out here. Thanks for reading

Budget (including currency): $1500 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Photography editing and multimedia production (Adobe Illustrator, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) Other details I’m looking to gut and upgrade this Sony Vaio which belongs to my mother. She’s had this computer since 2005 and was a workhorse during our most difficult times. The computer stopped working at the behest of a young and incredibly naive and dumb child (me) around 2011, and I would like to upgrade it with more modern specs. Here are the issues I’m facing: 1) The liquid cooling unit’s placement is installed in such a way that it’s difficult to remove it from the CPU, as it snakes through a thinner part up to the radiator located at the topmost part of the chassis (shown below). 2) I would like to keep the installed dual optical drives, floppy drive, SD and memory stick ports located on the front panel of the computer. I understand modern motherboards don’t have IDE connectors anymore in place of SATA. 3) I would like to try and keep the current liquid cooling unit, however I’m concerned with how it’ll keep up with modern CPUs as this computer was installed with an Intel Pentium D. 4) The power supply is in a really weird spot given the design of the case, and I wonder if a modern power supply would be able to fit in its current spot. This will be my first ever project, so any ideas you may have for how I can navigate this case would be incredibly helpful. Cheers!

Problem: Windows 10 has become unstable freezing after 20 or so minutes of moderate use. Display breaks up with horizontal lines starting at the top of the screen and spreading to the bottom. Sometimes the bottom quarter does not break up. This is sometimes followed by blue screen which sometimes does collect information on the crash and sometimes does not. Rebooting the machine results in the same style of crash occuring progressively quicker until rebooting results in a black screen. Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64 bit System specs: Sony VAIO VPCEH1L8E, Intel Core i7-2720QM, Sony MBX-247 DA0HK1MB6E0 (REV:E), Kingston Hyper X 16GB DDR3L (2133 MHz), Western Digital Blue SSD (500GB), Panasonic E233037 (CPU Fan), Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260, Sony VGP-AC19V33 (19.5v 3.9a) BIOS version: INSYDE R0200Z9, 19/04/2012 (last release) Background Information: Ever since this laptop got lightly kicked a few of years ago the screen has flickered red at certain angles when the laptop is open but adjusting it always solved the issue. The issue has never bothered me too much but I would like to resolve it at some point. In the past couple of weeks the screen has been breaking up entirely in a different way to the usual red flickering and windows 10 crashes but I do not think the damaged display is contributing to the crashing. I have reinstalled windows 10 twice initially thinking it had something to do with the "2021-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5005033)". After reinstalling Windows 10 the first time it ran problem free for a couple of hours with no issues then crashed in the same way again. I reinstalled Windows 10 again yesterday and it did not even last the Windows 10 set up procedure. This morning I took the laptop apart to see if there was anything obviously wrong with the graphics chip, motherboard or display cable but nothing was untoward apart from oddly, a loosely seated RAM stick. The upgraded RAM was installed around two to three years ago. I cleaned the system with compressed air and Isopropanol then put it back together. It wasn't overly dusty but we have had a lot of building work done in the past year and the house has been full of plaster dust. Thus far it has not crashed but I have not done anything on it other than let it run idle and extract the crash dump file I have attached. It is also worth noting this laptop has been substantially upgraded beyond the original intentions of Sony so I'm not sure how much wear the more power hungry CPU is having on the system. I have not used this as my main system for a long while especially with home working/ home studying not requiring me to have a portable computer however it is used weekly. 082921-7484-01.zip

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEA25FA laptop. this model, comes with a windows 7 home. (yes, it's old, my father gave it too me). So installed Windows 10 on it and found something illigal about the graphics chip. It has an ATI mobility Radeon HD 5145 chip with 512 MB of VRAM (the standard mobile 5145 has 1GB). I tryed to install the driver from the sony website, but all of the drivers there are for Windows 7 Only and at the AMD website, the application they suggest doesn't install. BTW the driver that is installed now, is something not existed. pictures below Specs List: Intel Core i3-350M 8 GB of ram ATI mobility radeon HD 5145 512GB Laptop product page: https://www.sony-asia.com/electronics/support/laptop-pc-vpc-series/vpcea25fa Specs on Sony's website: https://www.sony-asia.com/electronics/support/laptop-pc-vpc-series/vpcea25fa/specifications The ATI mobility radeon HD 5145 at AMD website: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-hd/ati-mobility-radeon-hd-5000-series/ati-mobility-radeon-hd-5145

So I have a Sony Vaio laptop which is about 5-6 years old running Windows 10. I recently upgraded it's hard drive from it's original HDD to a new SSD (Kingston A400 128GB). I had previous experience with this kingston SSD since I have a second one working just fine in my PC. For the first month of buying and installing it on my laptop everything worked as advertised. I was enjoying the super fast speed of my new SSD. But after a while I saw some major slowdowns. Keep in mind the laptop was used solely for browsing and maybe watching a movie or so. No heavy tasks. The first thing I did was open task manager and there I saw that my disk usage was at 100% non stop. And that was because 'System' was the first program popig up on task manager. I tried some things I read like disabling superfetch, windows search, do a restart, check antivirus. Nothing worked. So I did a complete format and reinstalled Win10 my formatted SSD. Not wanting to overload my Laptop I installed only 4-5 essential programs ( Chrome, iTunes, iCloud, Libe Office and Popcorn Time). For a span of 2 to 3 weeks the Laptop worked fine again. But after that all of a sudden I again saw major slowdowns. I tried some things again with no results so I formatted again. The same thing happened. After 2 or so weeks my laptop is again slower than ever and I dont know what to do. Is it the SSD's fault, Do any of the programs mentioned have a history of slowing down PC's Is there a problem with some other hardware? I could really use some help.

So I got my hands on an old laptop , a friend gave it to me cause he did not to want to throw it in the trashcan. It is working about as you would expect from an old laptop with a dual core pentium and 2gb of ram. Since I have a LOT of ddr2 lying around I thought I would pimp it out so it would run 32bit mint like a boss. But it does post with anything more than 2 gb, either 1 or 2 sticks. I made sure the ram sticks were not conflicting. They had the same model number , frequency etc... Is it a motherboard limitation or a cpu one ? The model is Sony vaio PCG - 7y1m. Could I update the bios and be fine ? its pretty old , updating bios must be a nightmare. Also could a cpu swap solve that, it is socket p.

Dear all! I'm fairly new to the PC modding scene and I'm particularly fond of collecting slightly older hardware - mostly things I was lusting over as a teenager and couldn't afford until now. An example of this is my beloved Vaio TZ (VGN-TZ31WN... gotta love Sony's classy naming scheme), which is sadly hopeless obsolete nowadays. In order to inject more life into it, I thought I would try installing an NVME SSD - specifically this one, an SK Hynix 256GB M.2 2230 affair - paired with an M.2 to mPCIe adapter (from here) - into its single mini PCIe slot currently occupied by the WiFi card. I'm aware that I'm limited to 1x PCIE 1.0 (or 2.0?) speeds, but even that would be around twice as fast as the current PATA limit. There's surprisingly little information about how to do this, with perhaps the closest thing to a guide coming from here. I gave it a go anyway and the device completely failed to show up. There are a myriad of reasons why it could have gone wrong (not least of which is the Chinese adapter...) but what steps can I take to eliminate probable causes? The PC is running Windows 10 with all updates as well as the "latest" BIOS (from 2009). I don't know if there is anything I can do in Windows though as the device does not show up in diskpart, diskmgmt, device manager or elsewhere. I have tried removing and reinserting several times. I have been unable to test the SSD and adapter so far, but am planning a test sometime soon in other systems (one with an M.2 NVME slot and another with an mSATA slot to see if it can convert a separate SATA M.2 SSD). I don't suppose I could ask for some advice? Thanks very much!

I am thinking of buying Acer aspire 5s which costs 500$ specs include: Intel Core i5 8th Gen 8265U (1.60 GHz) 8 GB Memory 512 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce MX250 1920 x 1080 Windows 10 Home 64-bit II am currently using an Sony Vaio with a second gen i5 2540M processor, 1 terabyte hard drive no graphic card at all and 4gigs of DDR3. I am also into music production and the Sony Vaio has been supporting my music production for a while now but if I load if I load up too many Vst synthesisers it causes audio clipping so I wanted to know that if I am buying this laptop would it be able to perfectly do all that type of work this older computer. I kind of know that this laptop for provide me with the performance that I need and Some of you guys may be thinking that I am a asshole and doesn't know anything about processors yeah u might be right. The problem is that the older laptop I have already gives me about 2.4 gigahertz of base clock and the Turbo boost clock of about 3 ghz and the Acer aspire that I would be buying has 1.5 gigahertz base clock and 3.7 gigahertz Turbo boost frequency so is it okay to go with the acer? Plus I wanted to know that would it be able to provide light gaming like pubg pc, fortnite, Apex legends Even if it's at mid or low graphic settings? And finally can I do midocre video editing In adobe premier without any issue on the acer? Thanks in advance

Hi all Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can keep using this laptop in a portable fashion. The screen glue has got to the point where I'm struggling to use it. A new screen from what I can see is looking to cost £500+. I'm not bothered about the touchscreen functionality and don't mind if it looks a bit jank. I'm just looking to replace the screen and still keep it portable. Can anyone help. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I stumbled upon this old Sony Vaio that I would very much like to get back in shape. An upgrade like ssd or CD mounted hdd would be great. But, there's a problem. Being an old japanese laptop, this vaio has a lot of atypical parts that you wont see these days anymore, like mSata-like wi-fi module or this "wonderful" 60GB CF HDD. What upgrade route to choose and is it worth any hassle? Any good advices? P.S. Kingspec CF ssd is not an option. P.S.S I will try to put a x32 win10 in it.

Hello! I'm trying to put ubuntu 64-bit for a course in college into my old laptop, but it's shows me: "This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU". The laptop is a SONY vaio PCG-4V1M. I found solutions online only for virtual machines and options that I can't find in my bios. If you can help, I would be great. thank you!

Hello everyone. I need help, yesterday my laptop(vaio VPCSB45FL) showed the bluescreen maybe related to video drivers. It does not let me access the system unless uninstall the drivers in safe mode, just like this starts w7 but without the proper driver. This is the information that I have of the problem: Firma con problemas: Nombre del evento de problema: BlueScreen Versión del sistema operativo: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3 Id. de configuración regional: 2058 Información adicional del problema: BCCode: 116 BCP1: FFFFFA8009C97010 BCP2: FFFFF88004CA3A2C BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 0000000000000002 OS Version: 6_1_7601 Service Pack: 1_0 Product: 768_1 If i try to install the driver it will show bluescreen again. It also causes not being able to suspend the pc, I can only turn off or hibernate. I read that this problem comes from the lack of the same driver. I hope can help me, attached the error capture and another capture took when I tried to start in linux. Excuse me if my English is not the best. regards.

My VAIO has 35W i5 3230M and want to upgrade to 35W i7 3632QM. I think that generally there is no Laptop CPU microcodes available... but socket is upgradable / not soldered. If someone ever upgraded SONY VAIO E17 / E15 / E13 laptop to any other CPU please let me know... Maybe there is no need of new microcodes and they are built in but as the i7 CPU is expensive, I need more information first. I do not need any other information, comment only if you experienced VAIO (or any) laptop CPU upgrade. and just for the info: This VAIO had two models in shop, i5 and i7 and there is not CPU support information for this models. Generally laptops CPU support isn't available. Most time at least.

I have a sony vaio PCG-81114L. I bought a charger online which didn't work when it arrived so I dug up an old universal one with the exact same specs and it worked... for a bit. Then the charger suddenly stopped. On my multimeter it reads 1.9v now instead of 19v. What could cause this and could I fix it at home?

I really need the community's help here; I want and need a good 2 in 1 convertible laptop. My main concern is with RELIABILITY. I had a Sony Vaio Flip 13 which was perfect when it worked: powerful, light, no bloatware, absolutely stunning design, a genious hinge mechanism and a wonderful stylus. But what a piece of junk it was regarding reliability!!! :-( It constantly stopped working and presented numerous hardware issues. MB replaced by Sony under when warranty, pc fan broke and I had to replace it myself and finally the screen and CPU malfunctioned, so I sold it for parts. But man, I still miss it alot. It worked for 18 months and my whole Nursing & Engineering degrees where on its Onenote. Now, the all new HP Spectre x360 t13 or t15 are my lead options. But I keep reading very bad reviews in amazon about them in every issue of hardware failure and such.. Vaio is also a good candidate (great 48W CPU). But I read it has a baterry issue and NO support from the company (and no Thunderbolt 3 i/o which is essential for future graphics proofing). Can people here with actual real life experience with these models confirm or disaprove the reliability issues? I need help here... Thanx

Since i received my first laptop in 2014, it has been plagued with hard-disc over-utilization. I now own a new(old) laptop that belonged to my mother, which is a Sony Vaio, it too has been plagued with the same issue only much worse. From the moment i turn it on to the second it powers down. It does sometimes however settle down after a while but once it does go down it seems to go into a exteremely unstable state where the utilization does not remain c I need help in resolving this issue as im at the point where ive done everything apart from deleting system32 . All Jokes aside, id love to receive some advice on ways to remedy this issue and hopefully be able to use my computer properly again.

I have been the happy owner of a Sony VAIO VPCEH1L8E for nearly 6 years now however while the laptop is fine for microsoft office tasks and browsing most websites it is struggling with Adobe CC and Autodesk programs. I am in the process of upgrading it because I don't feel it is obsolete just yet. I use a desktop for the bulk of my work which I enjoyed buiding last year but I still use this while out and about. I can't justify buying a new laptop just yet because it doesn't get heavy use. System Properties Operating System: Windows 10 Education Chipset: Intel HM65 Express Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz 2.10GHz Installed memory (RAM): 8.00GB Storage: 452GB HDD (500GB SSD on the way) It has been a very loyal servant to me and I hope to keep it relevant for a couple more years by utilising all possible performance upgrades. The CPU is not soldered so replacing the CPU must be possible. Other variants of this model came with an i7-2620M but I am unsure how much further it can be taken? i7-2640M?

Finally on my 10th year of owning my Sony VGN-NR120E, I've come to the point of installing 6GB of RAM. When my VGN-NR120E was new in 2007 it came with 1GB of DDR2, after a year I upgraded to 2GB, then some 4 years later I bumped it up to 3GB. In 2014 when I upgraded the CPU, mobo, SSD, and GPU I popped in another 2GB DIMM for a total of 4GB. Now in the year 2017 I have a total of 6GB, a combo of 4GB of Hynix and 2GB of Crucial. Why is this remarkable you ask? My laptop originally came with a GL960 northbridge that could only officially support 2GB of RAM. Some Dell and Sony laptops with these chips were higher binned and were capable of running 3GB of RAM along with higher FSB 45nm Core 2 Duos. Currently I have the PM965 northbridge which only officially supports 4GB of RAM, while I am using 6GB of DDR2 not to mention an overclocked extreme edition CPU. This is another instance of Sony receiving higher binned chips from Intel. If you're lucky enough to still own a Sony VGN-NR series laptop I encourage you to try this RAM upgrade. 6GB of RAM really wakes this laptop up with current applications and workloads. If you own any laptop with the PM965 northbridge it's worth a shot to try this RAM upgrade, maybe a CPU while you're at it. The total cost of the upgrade was $15 thanks to Free Greek Minneapolis. They looked through every laptop that came in the door for months to find the 4GB DIMM that made this upgrade possible.

I have an old Sony VPCEH25EN laptop currently on dual boot Linux and Windows. My laptop came with Windows 7 Home Basic. It included a Quick Web Access button and a Linux based OS only for browsing the Internet. It went away when I installed Windows 10. The button still responds but reports me that it's missing a software. Now my question is can I assign a normal Windows boot when clicking the power button and a Linux boot whenever I press the WEB button?
