So my current computer was built using random/cheap ssds from before I knew anything about read or write speeds. I'm about to do a completely new build and I want to see if any of these ssds are worth keeping. Does anyone know of a free and non-virus filled way to test their performance?

Anyone else ever try to buy parts from auctions? Picked up a 24 inch Acer V243HL for around $35 USD 2 years ago, came from a company selling their old IT equipment. It also came with a garbage keyboard and mice, which I threw into the trash. It's now with my parents and used pretty much all day, definitely a good purchase. More recently I picked up an Intel NVMe 256 GB M.2 SSD less than a year old for around $20 USD, with a few 256 GB 2.5inches Samsung SSDs that were around 2 years old for the $20 each. The Samsungs were probably fair prices second hand compared to the bargain that was the Intel. Given the model numbers and another auction on the same site, I believe they came from Lenovo laptops which were put up in a separate auction. Given the volume I assume it came from a Lenovo distributor, but I don't have clear info on that. Currently waiting on delivery for those. Update: all the drives work fine. Great addition to my new build

Hi, Im currently looking to build a system (in the UK) for a total of £550 and have come to the conclusion that buying a used GPU will, most likely, provide the best performance in this budget. Is it worth the money considering it is a used card / older architecture? Any recommendations are welcome Thanks, Lex

I am able to buy a used Blower Style Cooler MSI Vega 64 for approx CAD$300 (US$225). It's a blower style model which has apparently been used for 1.5 years. Is this a good deal? I have a 144Hz 1080p monitor and don't mind lowering settings to hit the 144hz (paired with i5-8400 & 16gb 3200Mhz Ram). I know blower style GPUs aren't amazing but I don't plan on overclocking the card and plan on having decent airflow in my case. Am I correct to say that GPU is on par with a 5600 XT or a RTX 2060 for gaming? (The cheapest used RX 5700 I see for sale is C$375 and cheapest used RTX 2060 is C$400) Any input would help, thanks!

Hi everyone, With the release of the 2070 Super I am considering upgrading to be able to get the most out of my 1440p 144hz monitor. I am currently in doubt between getting a 2070 Super or a used 1080 ti, since their used prices are quite attractive and the 2070 Super (not to mention the 2080 (Super)) prices are ridiculously inflated where I live. A used 1080 ti is about half to two-thirds of the price of a new 2070 Super in my country. So, what are your thoughts about about both cards? What are the benefits of one over the other?

so, here is the dilemma. i have been using my gaming PC for 5 years now. never had issues with anything, runs any game good or bad and has (obviously) degraded over the time i have spent using it. i have taken a liking to vr and so i purchased an oculus rift etc etc. everything stayed the same blah blah (just to note, i did buy myself a gtx 1050ti on release which i kept until 13 days ago). vr was not as smooth as it could be with just my 1050ti but was still enjoyable, nevertheless i still wanted that "better experience" and turned to eBay, where i scored a gtx 1070 founders for little under 200 pounds, installed it, cried like a baby while waiting for the drivers to install. all was fine until i tried vr. minor improvements. this is where i decided to finally do a full spec upgrade on my PC whilst at the same time going within my budget (student currently on EMA, you can guess how that plays out money wise). **im going for a used build** oof anyway, i sold my 1050ti and make a nifty 80 pounds (was in great condition :v) i now have an extra 80 lying about --> going toward pc cost. give it time and i can accumulate enough funds to get all i need, piece by piece. problem is that i cant find these pieces. which takes me to a few days back....Linus how on earth did you source these components...and where? im looking all over for them sweet deals at the moment im looking for a cpu, mostly for 7600k i5/i7, then onto ram (going for 16gb at least) then onto cooling. i currently have the 850w psu I've been rocking for all this time to keep me going progress so far is; -asus prime z270-p (snagged for 45 pound) -gtx 1070 (stated above) -bunch of 120mm corsair red led fans w/8 way fan splitter (bundle i snagged for 30 from a friend) -5 years worth of accumulated thermal paste and dust spray??? (cost probably something when i bought them) -old 850w HEC Compucase G7 psu (old and running still -Corsair spec 03 case (my old case, will continue to be my case, im keeping the 5 years worth of sticker bombing too) -HDD's blah blah but also a brand new SSHD from sea-gate. -some old cpu cooler that probably wont even fit an lga 1151 socket to be fair -ton of cables -copy of windows home linked to my account blah blah and finally -a 2m string of red LED's that i had under my bed for some reason. im basically asking for help in the little fixes i can do to improve this "upgrade" and so im turning to the tech "bros" blah blah etc etc because i can sentence properly don't worry. all in all im planning on making a used lga1151 build suitable for vr... i should have just said that at the start but hey if you read this your thinking the same probably. EDIT: forgot to add but i am not looking for links here, just advice and tips on sourcing these things, i.e upon new releases etc EDIT2: i have sourced myself an intel i5 7600k that i sniped in a bid for little under 130 pounds, as well as that i managed to get hold of 16gb ddr4 ram by corsair for just under 60. im thinking of possible getting an m.2 ssd as a boot device as my hdd is again 5 years old and definitely slows me down. as for graphics, i dont exactly need anything but perhaps a second 1070 in sli would be a good investment as some point? if theres any thoughts on this please let me know

As title states. I was gonna buy a new Galax/kfa2 RTX 2070 from amazon, which was gonna cost 499euro. Just before i bought i found a deal, for a use Aorus gtx 1080ti for 550eur. After asking, the seller re-assured me that the card was not used for mining, and that it was only used for a year. Especially since the price will be nearly the same when considering shipping costs. I am looking for an opinions, is the risk of buying a used card worth having the performance difference ? Would a generation older card result in any problems down the line ?

Hi, I have a problem I would like advice on. I'm looking for some advice on a graphics card I just bought from ebay. I'm posting in planning, because I am rebuilding a PC using my old crosshair IV and phenom II 1055t rig, to sell it for almost no gain. Really just because I'd like to give the hardware new life instead of letting it go unused, and give someone a good deal on a fairly powerful gaming PC. Ok so the dilemma is, I bought a used Asus strix gtx 970, that SAGS more than anything I've ever experienced. I actually have to prop the card up in its slot with a chopstick to get video signal. See the attatched picture. The backplate is actually warped. Upon testing the card, I see that temps reach 93°C. This is unacceptable to sell to someone who is inexperienced with computer hardware. I want to return the card to the seller on Ebay and get my money back, but is this worth trying, I may just reapply thermal paste and mount the card vertically in its new case to try solving the sag and temps. What would you do?

Hi I'm from South Africa and I'm building a relatively high end PC. It's my first personal build and the specs I'm looking at are: -The latest RYZEN 7/9 CPU (waiting on the release) -Waiting on the latest Motherboards to accompany the CPUs. -A GTX 1080ti MSi Gaming X for R6000 (about $450, used) -16GB of Hyper X Predator RAM (3600 MHz) -I'll buy the SSD and Hard drive with any specials that come along -Antec Mercury 240 RGB All In One CPU Liquid Cooler / 900-1800 RPM Fan -The case I haven't decided on yet -Antec EAG750 EarthWatts Gold Pro Series 750W 80+ Gold Semi-Modular Power Supply I'm considering a used Antec High Current Pro 1000W 80+ Platinum modular power supply for the the same price as the one above, just $10 cheaper. Is this a good idea?

Hi i currently own a machine that is around 6 years old now and it has been servicing my needs comfortably for that time. The current specs are i5 3470 HD 7990 16GB 500GB ssd It is generally used for light gaming, office work and as a media center as connected to a 50in TV. If i am gaming i normally have a twitch stream, Skygo football stream or youtube video on my second screen. Recently I've noticed stuttering and checked task manager to see the CPU is being used heavily by chrome streaming the video. My motherboard is a P8 Z77-V-LX2 and the max it supports is a i73770k cpu which i can find on ebay and the likes for around £120 My question is that in 18 months my eldest son starts secondary school so i was going to fully upgrade then to what ever the bang for the buck platform is then and pass this machine to him for a school work machine. So is it worth me buying the i7 now improving my experience and his in the long term (Also opens option of overclock with z77 board) or just wait the 18months save my £120 and just chuck that on the new machine. Any other options that you think i should look into as well im open too (by light gaming i mean, Fifa, HOI4, Divinity original sin 2, FM19 etc not intensive AAA games although if Red Dead Comes to PC i wanna play that) Thanks Again J

Hi guys, I've been trying to do a lot of research but I feel like the situation I'm in is an awkward middle ground. I've been trying to sell my Lenovo Flex 3 15" for the last few months but I don't really know of I'm marketing/selling it the way it should be. It was purchased at $1200 in 2014. Specs- Core i7 5500U 8gb DDR3 RAM 1tb hdd 360° touchscreen I swapped the HDD for an SSD while I used it but swapped the HDD back in once I built myself a PC. While the SSD was in it was totally usable and the battery life wasn't awful (3-4 hours). I kept it in good condition. Is $400 too ambitious of an asking price on the local classifieds? I don't think it's at the point of being a salvage computer, even though it's going on 5 years old now. Should I be following some kind of rule of thumb for value? Thanks and let me know if pictures are necessary.

So I started playing video games on a WII and my dad's PS3, but once I saved up a bit of money, I decided to buy myself a computer in order to play some games with my (still) best friend. Now it's been a few years since then and I have now built my very own PC and have upgraded it a few times. This laptop is simply sitting around doing nothing and I am thinking of selling it on Kijiji (Canadian craigslist) but have no idea how to price it. It's decked out with only the latest and greatest A6-5200 4c/2Ghz, Radeon 8400 w/512Mb vram, 750Gb 5200 Rpm HDD, 8Gb DDR3L (could someone also tell me what the L is?) and a nice 15.5"LED LCD. I would also like to note that it has a full keyboard (numpad) and the I/O is not bad either; 1x Ethernet, 1x VGA, 1x HDMI, 3x USD 2.0 and an optical drive slot (no drive, but it does have a dust cover). Could anyone tell me how much this would be worth? Thanks

Hi there, I'm upgrading my whole system from an i5 6500 + GTX 1060 to a 3600 CPU and a yet to decide GPU as you read in the title. I'm torn between the Sapphire RX 5700XT NITRO+ for 477€ and the MSI RTX 2080 DUKE for 560€. The 2080 is used, but it was only for 6 months, and still has a year and a half of guarantee at my local hardware shop. Do you guys think I should spend the little extra and go for the 2080 or just go for the 5700XT? That extra money was going to be used to buy a game, but I don't mind waiting a month or so to buy it. Thank for you guys's help

Hi all! I just bought a used RX 480 4GB (Sapphire Nitro, not Nitro+). I installed it last Sunday by doing this: I downloaded the latest RX 480 drivers from AMD's site, rebooted into safe mode, used DDU to uninstall all graphics drivers, shut down PC, replaced my GTX 750 TI with the RX 480 and connected my PSU's 6+2 pin PCIE connector. So I booted up my PC, everything was working great with no problems, I did some web browsing and a couple of Dota 2 games. I don't have direct access on my PC right now since I'm only home on weekends. My brother uses it on weekdays though, mostly just browsing, web development and Dota 2. So my brother told me that this Monday and Tuesday, the PC had no issues, but just this Wednesday, it had random black screens (literally, NOT "No Signal" black screens) that lasts for a second. It occurred about 5 times while playing Dota 2, and a few more afterwards while doing web development. He shut the PC down but later that night, when he played Dota 2 again, black screens occurred again about 5 times. Specs: Motherboard: Asrock H61M-DGS rev 2.0 CPU: Intel i5 3470 Memory: 8GB DDR3 PSU: Thermaltake Smart SE 530W GPU: Sapphire Nitro RX 480 4GB (was Palit GTX 750 TI) OS: Windows 10 x64 Some background on where I got the gpu from: A shop that sells used parts from Korea. I had the gpu shipped to me, they gave a 1 month warranty, so it can be replaced if proven faulty. It makes me wonder though why they were selling Sapphire Nitro for RX 480, and not Nitro+. I searched the net for Sapphire RX 480, and very rarely does Nitro (non plus) come up, at this point I'm starting to suspect that the gpus they are selling have been used in mining. I found out though, that the random black screens have been an issue with AMD gpus these past few years, so maybe the gpu I got isn't faulty after all and that my issue is maybe just the same as everyone else's. Still, I'm not really sure how to diagnose the real problem, I mean how do I tell if it's because of the gpu being faulty, something software related (drivers, win10), or something else entirely. Would a stress test like Furmark help determine if its a hardware issue? I can only list down things to do before I get home on Sunday. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Hi Is there any markets in Kuala Lumpur that sell used PC parts like YongSan Electronics in Seoul Korea. I know that Low Yat Plaza has lots of new pre built things but I am looking for individual parts like Graphics Cards and CPUs. Thanks

Hello! Thanks to @DatTestBench and @LukeSavenije I got an answer to my question about mining GPUs and if they are worth it. From their answer, I came to the conclusion that the "deal" I found is worth it. I found an RX 580 4gb that was mining for about a year and a half for 90 euros (about 110 USD). Used hardware prices are whack in my country and that's why I'll refer to this ad as a "deal". (they were mining ETH btw) Basically, I found a mining rig with 6 XFX RX 580's. The dude is selling the GPUs 90 eur a piece. The owner claims that the GPUs mined in well ventilated rooms, that they were never overheating and that they were never cooked, fixed or even opened. I think that the cards have Mining BIOSes on them and that's why I'm asking the question, HOW do I install a default BIOS? Also, from what I know, some 580's have a switch next to the power connector which switches between the two bioses that they apparently have? So yeah, how do I install a normal GPU BIOS on a card with a mining BIOS?

So, today on one of my many flea-market escapades, I came across a big box of assorted cables, there was all your standard things, DVI cables, VGA cables, power cords, SATA cables etc., but just as I was getting to the end, a strange USB connector peaked out at the bottom of the box, and I immediately recognised it from Linus' video from a few years back, I dug down to the bottom of the case in a rush, only to realise, that the cable was still on the spool, and that it had never been unwound from said spool, after inspecting it a bit more, it turns out to be the 50 meter version (165ft) which at the time of release was priced at just over $600. ? So, now I have a 50 meter optical USB 3 cable, that I'm not quite sure what to do with, but I'm just stoked to get a chance to see it in real life! ? While this might not be my biggest or craziest "find" ever, it surely is one of the coolest! What crazy and off finds have you guys made in unexpected places? (Flea-markets, Dumpster-diving, junkyards etc.) ?

Hello, I am looking to buy myself a cheap, but usable laptop for schoolwork, development, etc. I am looking at around 300 to 350 US Dollars for this. I have looked at the THINKPAD lineup, and I think that that may be the way to go. I could probably upgrade the RAM, as well as upgrade a HDD to an SSD. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm a student on a tight budget and I would like some input about whether or not to buy used last gen model laptops. All I really need in a laptop is just something that is not chrome os, and that I can use full version of windows on. For example I see listings on ebay for surface pro 3 & 4's for around $250 with the type cover, however I am not certain if this is a worthwhile deal. Would buying a used cheap last gen model be the best move?

The title is pretty self explanatory. I have been really lucky recently and have gotten some computer parts as gifts from family to build some systems to get into virtualization and some other projects of mine, as well as some old parts from a friend who upgraded their system. However, I did overlook one detail. I have zero extra DDR4. Which just so happens to be the thing these systems need. So here is the situation: I have three systems, and one kit of DDR4 (G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200) Currently what I do is put the RAM into the system I need to use at the moment and use it, then when I need to use one of the other machines (see list below) I power down the system currently using the ram and stick it in the system I need to use next. Not ideal, as I know I run the risk of damaging the slot or DIMM everytime I insert and remove the DIMM. The first system (system in back of photo), which currently has the kit in it, is my desktop PC (I have a decent laptop, so I haven't been using it often, I still use it though) It has a R7 2700x and an Asus "ROG Strix X470-F Gaming" motherboard. The second system, which I hope to get up and running to lend to my girlfriend, has an i5 6600k and an Asus "STRIX Z270G Micro ATX LGA1151" motherboard. The third system, which is my hopefully soon to be home server, has a TR 1920x and an Asrock "Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming" motherboard. I was wondering if any you had some good recommendations for used or refurbished RAM as I have never really bought used hardware online before and would rather not screw it up. I was hoping if at all possible to get a 2x16GB kit for the TR system (or if I am lucky 4x16GB) and I don't think I have room to be picky about frequency or ECC/Non-ECC. Then for the Intel system I think just anything that would work, like a kit of 2x8gb, and I don't think I'd be picky about if they have a heat spreader or not. If it doesn't I can just slap an aftermarket heat spreader on em to make em look nice. Sorry for asking what seems like a pretty easy question to answer with google, I wanted to get a little human input to make sure I make the right decision (=

Hey guys, Since I'm upgrading , I'd like to sell my old rig. Can I get an estimate of how much I should sell this for, and if I should part it out or sell it as a complete rig? If I sell it as a complete rig I'd have to get a case for it, I picked that one out that's in the list since it looks good, buildable and cheap. Also, let me know if your response is in CAD or USD.
