Hi! I’m building Linux From Scratch 11.0 on a freshly installed Ubuntu Impish (21.10). I seem to be stuck at the step 8.26 though. I’ve chrooted into the system, all the necessary stuff is mounted to /dev and other directories (so all the steps of the guide are followed), but `su tester -c […]` fails for me with `su: Cannot drop the controlling terminal`. I’ve got a situation similar to the OP’s of this thread on another forum, except that `tty` returns `/dev/pts/0` for me. Any ideas on how to work around this?

I am planning to move from windows to ubuntu, however i want to make sure all my existing peripherals work! To do this; I am running a virtual machine with ubuntu in it, and passing though those usb devices to it. Now, I don't know if it is because of this, but i cannot seem to get my capture card to run on ubuntu. I use a Genki Shadowcast to stream my switch to my laptop when docked, and i have tried several methods to get it to display on the VM. The device is passing through, and showing as both video and audio input. It appears when running `lsusb` The methods i have tried are as follows; * Using the command `gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src device=/dev/video0 ! xvimagesink`, the shadowcast for some reason seems to add two /dev/video entries, both result in the following error. Setting pipeline to PAUSED ... ERROR: Pipeline doesn't want to pause. I have setup LanCache on a Ubuntu 20.04 system following the documentation on their website and a YouTube tutorial from BattleNonSense. I can see the docker of lancace_monolithic_1 and lancache_dns_1 running with "sudo docker stats". I set a static IP, outside of my routers DHCP range, on the Ubuntu system and set this IP as the DNS in Windows. The .env and docker-compose.yml files are configured to this settings. See below for my config files and screenshots of the IP and DNS settings. ipconfig /flushdns nslookup steam.cache.lancache.net nslookup lancache.steamcontent.com After i tried this in Windows, it still returned Steam's IPs not 192.168.178.10 from the Ubuntu system. I set the DNS in my router before, It didn't change anything and I prefer to set it in Windows. Do i have to do anything related to the ports in my system? I had synergy installed, to share mouse and keyboard, but removed it incase it messed with the network or ports for LanCache. I beleive synergy also uses port 443. Here is the content of my .env file: And my docker-compose.yml

It's been a few months since i switched to ubuntu 20.04 on my toshiba l850 laptop. And trackpad hasn't been working ever since. I know it's not a hardware problem because it works on windows (installed by default). Plugging in a usb mouse works and that's how i've been using it. But I'm tired of carrying an external mouse around. It might be a driver issue but I'm not really sure about it. There are drivers available for trackpad of this laptop but they're all for windows. I've been trying to debug it ever since but it never really worked out. Would be glad if any of you can help thanks. I have been using an old salvaged desktop to run plex and other similar services. I was booting from an M.2 drive in an external enclosure with Ubuntu. I wanted to upgrade my hardware but keep the OS and the work i have put in setting things up. After building the new computer the system boots to the BIOS and I see the drive but it will not boot to the OS. Is it possible to salvage the data and OS or will I need to start a clean install? I've been running the development channel version of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS for a few months now. (Official LTS is set to drop at some time in April). Today I decided to do a repo update as I have been doing more frequently with new bugs popping up here and there over the past few weeks. Today Ubuntu released a few new UI changes and a nice built in tool for taking screenshots and screencaps (not at the greatest quality and uses .webm file format) Upon pressing the "Print screen" button on my keyboard I was greeted by this lovely tool that allowed me to choose what specifically I wanted to screenshot and gave me the ability to take a screen recording.

I recently upgrade to an SSD in my old laptop and reinstalled Ubuntu 21.10 on it to start fresh. However once it all was installed, after I login the only output i get is a black screen with occasional artifacting at the top of the screen. I am able to access the TTY terminal from the login screen luckily, but I've been stuck trying to find a fix for the problem for the past two days. So any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Here is a video of the flickering Troubleshooting steps that have been tried: Reinstalling the OS Formatting the drive and then reinstalling the os Trying a different distro (PopOS). Still have the same problem Laptop Specs HP 15-bw011dx AMD A6-9220 APU 4GB of Ram AMD Radeon R4 Graphics 120 GB SSD I'm still a novice when it comes to using Linux so if there is some more information that you need just tell me how to get it and I can.

I was just starting up the system and opened Steam when Gnome locked up, the mouse worked but nothing else including alt+f2 worked. I waited a couple of minutes for the drive activity light to disappear, and I hard rebooted it. After the Systemd boot menu I see a flash of gray from the Gnome login screen right before being dumped here. Booting between the current kernel and the old kernel via the systemd boot menu makes no difference. I haven't tried booting into the recovery partition yet, but I can boot into Windows which rules out hardware failure. After some searching I found this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/646414/welcome-to-emergency-mode-think-it-is-a-fsck-problem After booting into the recovery partition and running fdisk -l I get this: sda appears to be the NTFS formatted Segate drive installed in my system that mounts on boot. (I have checked it in Windows and it is fine) sdb is the drive PopOS is installed on, but I don't know what to do about the "Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary" error. If anyone has any information on this I would love to know more. As you can see here, fsck thinks that sdb2 (The partition I believe Pop is installed on, is fine) Running cat /etc/fstab provides this: Am I screwed? How can I figure out what went wrong and (hopefully) fix it? If anyone has any idea what's going on here I could really appreciate the help. If worst comes for worse, would refreshing the OS from the recovery partition fix this issue?

I have created a minecraft server on Ubuntu 20.04 lts for me and a few friends. I am able to join fine but when anyone else tries to join they fall through the ground. Ive ran a speed test on the server and it was fine (140mbps down and 12mbps up) their ping is 80-90ms. There is nothing in the logs i can find that helps and i have run out of ideas. Any help is appreciated and I would be more than happy to provide any info needed.

I'm following this guide for bcache: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/Bcache I have a sata ssd that I'm not using in my gaming pc that I put into my server to cache my steamcache to make it faster. The drive isn't mounted in linux and I've tried reformatting the drive, using umount and using wipefs with the force option enabled. None of these have worked. On the steps for wipefs and make-bcache in the guide they both return the same error for /dev/sdc which is "device or resource busy" as far as I understand since the drive isn't mounted to the filesystem no processes should be using the drive so I can't figure out exactly why linux isn't letting me use wipefs or make-bcache.

Hi there, I have some work that requires me to use a VPS from the UK. I need to cut the cost from every angle possible hence the cheaper it is the better and I have found a VPS provider (Fasthosts) that gives me 1 vCPU, 512MB RAM and 10GB SSD Storage won't be of any use for me as my work will solely be limited to only 1 or 2 tabs of a browser. I have beginner to intermediate lvl knowledge for Linux based OS's mainly Ubuntu (I am a pretty scrappy person who can get things done and if needed I WILL learn new OS's) My question being: Are there any low ram usage browser that I can use on 512MB of RAM with 1 or 2 tabs opened which also needs to run only 1 chromium extension "Bitwarden" with it? My OS option that Fasthosts provides are: Debian 10 (Pre-Installed) Ubuntu 20.04 CentOS 8 I only have experience with Ubuntu but can work with others, but have NO CLUE which OS will run better on just 512MB of Ram and run a browser with an extension running on it? and also what browser to use that can meet my requirement? I can if there's no other option get the 1GB ram option but can't spend any more money than that. Thank you so much in advance if you can help!!

Hi so what has started to happen is as soon as I reboot/shutdown-power on my server the server looses internet connection for some reason. It still has acces to my LAN since I can ping it and ssh into it from my main pc but I cant run a speedtest for exemple and I can update or upgrade either and my devices using it has a dns server, because of pihole, dont have internet acces until I unplug the ethernet cable either from the server nic, the patch pannel or the switch. Im on ubuntu server 20.04. Any idea about that weird problem?

Asus Zenith Extreme 2 1920X Threadripper 64Gb ECC Nemix 24x HGST 8TB drives 1 TB Samsung SSD 980 Ti I am currently running Ubuntu with everything on the Raw OS. 2x ZFS pools of 12x raidz2. I am looking to switch over to a Docker solution for Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr and Plex also interested in My home assistant But have heard of issues of 1) Dockers accessing ZFS filesystems in these containers. 2) Plex having issues with hardware encoding (also issue with AMD processors and HW encoding) 3) If I do is it better to Clean install or migrate also heard docker makes this much easier.

So I was running Ubuntu in virtual box. It had been awhile since I fired up this particular VM and so firefox was out of date and so was the copy of Ubuntu. I was on a website and I clicked on something accidentally that was very similar to an ad. Firefox immediately threw and error and froze, Ubuntu then threw a kernel error and Firefox then crashed Like 20 seconds passed and then it clicked in my head that everything in the VM was out of date, I just clicked on some random ad that crashed firefox in a way which could be through overloading the memory and caused kernel errors. I could literally have a kernel exploit being run. Or it could have just been a bug. Regardless due to the very systematic way things were throwing errors and crashing I killed the box after like 30 seconds. I don't think I gave it nearly enough time to do any real damage and the few accounts I had logged into on the VM all have two factor authentication. But my host PC is a different story, if it got out of the VM my life would be much more difficult. The virtualbox machine did have a NAT connection to my main PC, which was connected to the internet through a VPN. I may just be paranoid, but if it was some type of exploit how possible would it be for a sophisticated piece of malware to escape virtualbox?

Hey everyone, I've just updated my server to from Ubuntu 20.10 to 21.04 and now my harddrives won't spin down I'm using WD Reds (WD60EFRX) and previously I've used sudo hdparm -S 180 /dev/sdb to set the automatic spindown after 15 minutes, however this doesn't seem to be possible after the update. Quickly checking with sudo hdparm -B /dev/sd? returns APM_level = not supported for all 3 WD Red drives I have. The random Seagate ST3000DM001 that's also on the same SATA controller returns APM_level = 128 and spindown works as expected. Any ideas how to fix that?

Hi all, So I've been attempting to set up Windows 8 dual booted on my old Dell Latitude E7270. This laptop was running ubuntu. I managed to get the USB installer working, but in the BIOS settings, I think I accidentally deleted the Ubuntu boot option. However, I know I didn't delete ubuntu, or my files, because while inserting the ubuntu installation USB, it informs me that I already have ubuntu installed. (Also, when in the installation USB, I deleted the partition with windows, but the one with old ubuntu is intact.) When I try to "add it as a boot option" again, BIOS setup doesn't show any files. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my SSD, same as where Windows 10 is (dual boot system). No audio plays when I plug my headphones in to play music/watch Youtube videos on Ubuntu. I tried a fix on Github, but it didn't work. Audio works normally when I boot back into Windows 10. Anyone know a fix? Laptop specs: Lenovo C930 256GB SSD Intel i7-8550u

I just bought a Fairphone 3 with the intent of downloading /e/ to it when I got it, but I just heard about Ubuntu Touch, which seems like an equivalent operating system. Due to the fact that there is little to no media coverage for both of them, i was wondering if anybody who has used them can recommend one. I love open-source things, and my daily driver computer runs Ubuntu 20.04, but the appeal of /e/ is that you can still access the Play Store. Any Thoughts?

Hi, After Google Photos is no longer "free" (they want to scrape your data and pay for the privilege), Dropbox in no longer good, and OneDrive is a piece of ****, I decided to try Nextcloud on my on server. Config Hypervisor running: - FreeNas with Z1 zfs - Ubuntu VM running plex, sonarr, homeassistant, Nextcloud (installed on its own SSD) Usually Nextcloud installs in the localhost file system, but it is a VM and I want to keep my data on my NAS. I changed my data folder location to a mount that links the VM with my NAS (same mount I run my Plex, Sonarr and other related programs). After moving the data folder I get this error "Nextcloud your data directory is readable by other users". I solved that by editing server/config.php and adding 'check_data_directory_permissions' => false, . How safe is my setup given I bypassed this option? And who are other users? Is it referring to local users, I am the only person using this server, and yes I can browse the files stored by Nextcloud using SMB. I set up Nextcloud with https and let's encrypt, that I can access through a DDNS. Is this setup safe ish? Also, how do I get rid of or block the http connection, if I go to the VM ip using http is get --- Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page. (just delete the www /html/)? Thank you!

Hello All! I'm currently having trouble figuring out how to run a shell script that executes with root privilege after the arriving at the desktop in Lubuntu 20.04. Unfortunately, the built in Autostart functionality in the LXQT configuration manager doesn't execute with elevated privileges. Additionally I also tried putting the shell script in etc/profile.d directory; however, all this did was make Lubuntu take longer to get to the desktop. I have made the file .sh, executable, and owned by root. Essentially, I want the terminal window for the script to pop up after I arrive at the desktop to prompt me with options. The script waits 60 seconds for user input before automatically executing another script. The reason it has to have root privilege is because the second script getting automatically executed needs to have root privilege as well. That script contains a watchdog which needs root privilege to trigger a hard reboot in the event of a hardware failure while I'm away from the computer. Hope someone can guide me in the right direction because I'm currently out of my depth. Thanks!
