Is the new 2.5 gig network cards are a better alt for diskless workstations for cheap? or should we ask linus for a video we rather didn't ask for? can it handle multi-response times like a 10gig emulex cards or no? (its for future proofing Internet Cafes when it comes to network arrays or illustrators who want a clean solutions)

So I've finished building my first high end dedicated server, I know some might be like ??? once they see the build list, I just bough the CPU and have everything else on the pcpartpicker so I'll be building this server and putting it into the datacenter, One question I have for this server is does anyone know of a rack case that I can buy to fit this server build so I can pay less for having it in the datacenter. One thing I will say for this secondary server, I'd like to use only use AMD CPU, I don't like Intel cpu, Don't hate on me intel lovers. I have been looking at the AMD EPYC cpu's and have been debating if I should go for the single or dual cpu build for the second server. I am going to be using this server for multi purpose of things (Game Servers/Web Hosting/Voice Servers/Etc) so I'm aiming at doing 128 GB of ram or more etc. If you guys have any suggestions for how I should build my second one, I'd love to hear!

Waddup fam, I work for Hewlett Packard Enterprise specifically in the server sales department. Y'all could start a series on how enterprise tech trickles down into consumer tech. Another option could be partnering/ helping these small startup companies create infrastructure/ give tips on how to successfully run a small business (accounting, marketing, advertising, sales, etc.). A different path would be to help smaller creators get exposure to sponsorship opportunities while taking a referral fee. Anyways.... if yall want to check out Nimble Storage (full solid state storage, and or compute servers HMU). Its like 3AM and I have work at 7.. fantastic.

So at tech university we've been assigned to plan a cloud solution which would improve security and reliability of a rail-based transport system. The machines are old and not computerized so I'd have to introduce standalone hardware and software to make it all work. The effort and cost should be minimal. I'm thinking on a few possible ways this could work (e.g. a centralized server with limited access according to the rank of the staff members plus a cloud backup) however I'm not very much into cloud architecture so any tips on what must and mustn''t be done would be greatly appreciated! Also if you are familiar with any existing plans which I could base mine on, please share. P.S. It's a side assignment, not rewarding grades or credits.

Hello, so im new to the server side of the tech world, but realized im really missing out on some workflow optimization by doing so. My setup is a dell Poweredge 510 a custom built encoding server running a 3950x and my main work station. I do video editing btw. So my plan is to have my poweredge configured as a nas running raid 10 or something similar with two 10gb cat7s running to a switch that is running two cat7s to my main work station and is also connected to my encoding server. I want to dump my new footage onto my encoding server and have that encode it, then send both the original files and encoded ones to my nas where I can edit off of them. Yeah 20gbs is overkill for now, but I will likely outgrow this if i dont future proof it a little. My questions... Can I add storage to the 510 in the same data pool? What cheap rack would you recommend, i have the 2u r510, my 1u r200 firewall, my 1u cyberpower ups, my 2u encoding server, i also want to be able to add more storage later, plus I need a switch. That brings me to my next question, anyone have switch recommendations? I have heard ubiquiti is good. Last, software or better raid recommendations? Ill probably throw a hypervisor on them and mess around, but I would love some input on where to start. Thank you!

Greetings guys, I have joined the forums today for this sole purpose: to propose a proper set for the server room. Although not brought up often, when a video is made that revolves around the server room it is clearly not up to the standards that we have seen from LMG. What is the production quality of a closet? I feel that for how important it is, a typical server closet does not do it justice, and does not fit the LMG style. Furthermore Linus loves messing around with that stuff, he has true passion for it. Watching a passionate man play with his enterprise toys makes for good content IMO. I believe a proper set would open up the doors for future videos of Linus geeking out, because he would have way more options and less limitations. In my head I see a proper sized room, sealed, insulated, fireproof, dust filtered, and maybe even having an air shower system, because why not — it seems like something Linus would do. It would have it's own climate control, and maybe even some active noise cancellation technology which would make a great video as well. Finally, RGB of course. The whole room. Those are just my assumptions on what the team would do, but I am sure you guys have a lot of suggestions as well. Looking forward to hearing your feedback, Cheerio –madscience2728

Greetings (data)travellers! ? The challenge is simple: Create a plan for building and maintaining the cheapest possible NAS solution (10tb+ storage and redundancy of your desire). I'm trying to figure this thing out myself, because I'm on a really tight budget and I'm curious to see what you'd suggest! have a great day/evening!

Hello Everyone, Am Atharva from India looking to build a home server. My budget is ~300$ (ik its less but cant exceed above that) Right now I have 2 systems conected to a public IP on which I run multiple stuff 1) Main PC Processor: I5 8400 RAM: 16GB SSD: 125 GB HDD: No (using SMB from my server for storage) Motherboard: Asus B360M-A on above system I run cirital sites or projects which are very imp to my using hyper-V on Windows 10 Pro 2) Old PC (turned into server builted in 2007, running 24*7 as a server since December 2018) Processor: Intel Dual Core Due 2 E8500 3.16Ghz Board: Zebronics G31 chipset RAM : 4GB DDR2 (As my board and G31 supports 4GB at max, i think) SSD: 125 GB Boot drive for Ubuntu Server HDD: 2.5" Laptop HDD 1TB TP-Link Gig NIC (as on board is 100 mbps) on above build I run multiple containers as I design NodeJs Microservices Stuff for projct. RN I am able to run almost 13-15 containers at a time without issues on the server but as its too old I'm unsure about its remaining lile and stability hence if something is very imp to host then I simply create a VM of 8 GB RAM on hyper-V and run on mail PC. This peaks my processor (I5-8400) to ~4GHz with 100% utilization as I use that PC for work simultaniously. What I want: system that is well is budget (at least board, RAM, processor) can run multiple VMs and containers wont be out of date soon (I cant afford Xeon as I am looking for consumer hardware) Will be cherry on top if it can run VMware ESXI out of box I guess I need to have more thread count to make it possible ... It will be great if someone can help me out ....................

Hello, I would like to know how domains (or similar things) are done on the Linux/Unix side of things as compared to Windows systems. I am talking about domains as in what Active Directory is to Windows. I have been working with Active Directory for quite a while and I understand how it works, but I have always wondered how a similar thing is handled when using Linux. When I search about this, people say that Samba can act as a domain controller but that looks like something you would use if you need to mix Windows and Linux systems together and does not sound native at all. How are domains done in Linux, are domains even a thing on Linux that many people use, or is there a completely different way or concept of doing things on Linux (scripts and management software?) For example: With my Windows systems I have 2 DCs, a WSUS server, Exchange server, IIS server, SCVMM server, SCCM server, SCOM server, etc... and they are all part of a domain and everything is configured through group policies. Now lets say I replace all of that with Debian or CentOS or something and have a Postfix server, Apache/NGINX server, etc... then how do companies usually manage all of that? Through a control panel or is there a domain equivalent that everyone uses? Sorry if this sounds dumb, I haven't been exposed that much to Linux systems, mostly Windows Server, so I was a little confused when I found a bunch of search results about Samba emulating a Windows domain controller, and thinking what the "native" Linux way is, and wondering if domains are even a thing in Linux or if there is some other completely different way of doing it.

So VMWare is supposedly targeting AMD's high-level server CPUs with their new licensing fees according to a Tom's Hardware article here. VMWare themselves have acknowledged the licensing changes in their news updates section although they've not mentioned AMD or any other company by name. Been seeing a lot of people theorizing that Intel tossed a lot of money at VMWare to do this seeing as how it seemingly doesn't touch Intel CPUs yet. Don't personally believe this to be the case but I've been proven wrong before. One way or another though, this is definitely going shake things up considering how widespread VMWare Workstation and it's parent company Dell is in the industry coupled with the shifting trends towards higher core counts. Interested in hearing other people's input on the matter though.

I'm looking at building a home Minecraft server for about 10 people. I don't want to pay for expensive hosting anymore. However, I am not sure if my build would run a server without issues. Build: - Ryzen 3 2200g - Stock Cooler - 32gb DDR4 3000Mhz RAM - 256gb M.2 NVME SSD - Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H Micro ATX Would this build be able to support a spigot server? Thanks

After seeing what the community said about LMG (Linus Media Group) making an anarchy server, I was dumbfounded. So I decided to make my own, 1b1t or 1Builder 1Tool. Yes, this is a copy of 2B2T but there is no queue, unless the lobby gets full (25 slots, upgrading soon). depending on how much my Wi-Fi internet can handle I may bump it up to around 50. IP: 1b1t.org Version: 1.12.2 Rules: None Location: Perth, Western Australia (add 60ms to latency as Proxy has a 60ms delay from server) Avg TPS: 19.99 Come and join the miniature 2b2t community today!

I just watched this video, and I thought, "Wow, these guys must have bank accounts exploding with money." The guy has 16 1080 Ti, and so much other stuff I don't even know. I tried to put it together on pcpartpicker but gave up because I didn't feel like adding 24 64 gig sticks of Ram. I don't know the brands he used for it, but it was bound to cost a lot. And 5 TB of SSD storage!! 4 Xeons! And what would be the profitability in bitcoin that you could mine on there?

Hi all, I have been looking to put my slow and ageing X3650 M2 to good use and have been wondering about turning it into a BungeeCord minecraft server using MineOS. I am thinking of getting Xeon X5670's and 32GB of 10600R ECC (on top of the 8GB already in system (may not work but worth a try)). firstly, I am wondering if using BungeeCord in this way is even possible? as well as if this hardware will be fine handling maybe ~50 players on each server during peak times. Memory allocations will be calculated later on dependant on individual server load. The upgrade cost as a whole totals around £110 which is way cheaper than any other similarly spec'd machine on ebay at the moment. I'm mainly asking if anyone has run servers on X5670's and is their single core performance sufficient for non-modded BungeeCord/Spigot servers? tl;dr: X5670 run minecraft server good? and Does Bungeecord from same server workie? Thanks in Advance ~ Chaz

So as a SydneySider from down south where used servers cost as much as a cheap car I’ve been looking for a few months to build a storage and networking server to run Plex and pi-hole and manage around 30 Ethernet connections in a rack mount case. In this thread I’ll post my progress and take suggestions or criticism.

Hello, I have 2 very old servers: - Sun Microsystems Sun Fire X4100 with 2x AMD Opteron 254 - HP ProLiant DL360 G4 with 2x Intel Xeon 3.60 GHz (Nocona) Both of these systems had very bad problems, from turning off and power cycling randomly, to not turning on at all and just a bunch of weird issues. I spent an entire day stripping them down completely, cleaning everything, and heat-cycling them with a hairdryer (I was really out of ideas), anyway, one of these methods worked and both servers came back to life. I then updated both servers' BIOS and Firmwares. I then created a fresh RAID array and installed Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 on them (just for testing purposes). I needed a way to stress test them to make sure that they are actually fixed, and that they are not going to just fail on me again. I loaded AIDA64, IntelBurnTest and Prime95 on them (only running 1 at a time though), and proceeded to run the tests. I noticed that they didn't get that hot and even though all CPUs were pinned at 100%, the systems still felt responsive as if there was no load on them at all. Basically, I would like to know if there is a way to stress them extremely hard and really torture the hardware to tell if it is going to be stable. I will run the tests for a week or two to make sure. So far, they have passed a night of AIDA64, but as I said, they don't really seem to be breaking a sweat. I want to push the hardware to it's absolute limits. CPU, Memory, Cache, FPU, Disks, Network etc... really rev them out and take them to their breaking point. Any suggestions will be appreciated! PS. I know these things are extremely old and almost useless by today's standards, and use a lot of power, but I like them and they are still very useful to me.
