  1. Hi so im looking to build a workstation PC and i saw that you can buy 2 E5 2670 Xeons for around $120 and for 16 cores 32 threads thats pretty good value for money but i was wondering how would these CPUs do in rendering video editing and gaming. would this make a good value for money PC? thanks guys
  2. Hi everyone, I'm currently on the lookout to upgrade my GTX 275 to GTX 1070. Now I've also considered that I should upgrade my CPU - MB - RAM in the near future. So I have two questions: 1. Will it really be worth upgrading to Skylake? I've never noticed any hiccups or lags whatsoever in my current PC except when it came to GPU intensive games. 2. Some have told me that there are issues with DDR4 regarding memory speeds and they slow down. I don't really believe that but I thought I'd ask you about it. If I'm to upgrade, I'd get Core i5 6400 and 16 RAM GB and probably H170 MB. My current PC has core i5 2400, 8 GB RAM and the Asus P8P67 Pro.
  3. Hi there! I'm running a 4-year-old PC with an i7-2600 (non-K), on a Z68 chipset board, the graphics are provided by the MSI's gtx 780 Lightning. And lately I felt like my games are running a bunch slower then they should. I cleared up all the useless junk, so my casual CPU consumption (when not creating stuff) is about 7-10%, so that bg process shouldn't be an issue. UPD: To clarify, I'm running overclock, with average speed of 4231.1Mhz Core speed (41.0 x 103.2 MHz) (sometimes 4.35). But the fact is - I have a 1333mhz memory (16gb of that), and I've read that in the most recent games, memory, actually, makes a difference (which was barely noticable before), at least that what digital foundry found out lately. I've googled a bit and discovered, that my CPU can run memory up to 2000mhz+ pretty easily, even though the speeds in the spec. lists are set to 1600mhz max. So, after all that, I have two questions: will I benefit from semithing like this 32gb kit: 32Gb DDR-III 2133MHz Kingston HyperX Savage (HX321C11SRK4/32) (4x8Gb KIT), in games in particular? And will I be even able to run that thing on that old of a hardware? If you want to ask, why I need 32gigs of ram, the answer is simple, I work with video, like a lot, so I consume it pretty fast. Attached cpu-z and dxdiag reports for the full spec-lists Thanks a lot! cpu-z.txt DxDiag.txt
  4. So after troubleshooting myself, I can't get these USB ports to work. I thought they were defective, but in Device Manager, it says that drivers were not installed. I re-installed Windows and the Drivers, and it still seems to not work. Specs: EVGA X79 SLI Core i7 3930K Adata SP600 SSD 128GB MSI TwinFrozr III 7950 EVGA Supernova 850G2 Here is a picture of Device Manager
  5. Recently I got my hands on an Alienware x51. The case is junk to me, same with the motherboard. Not to bash on Dell but, those custom motherboards really suck. Anyways, I still have an i5 2500k 3.7 GHz turbo Sandy Bridge processor. My plan was to build a very nice mini gaming tower, using the Prodigy M case. After looking around, with the socket of the processor at 1155, this limits my options on good motherboards. I wanted the Asus Maximus V Gene (ROG) but they don't make them anymore, any ideas on good Motherboards in the price range of $100-230? Thanks
  6. Hello guys, I now run a Intel core i5 2500 and I wonder if I will get a big performance improvement if I update to an Intel i7 4770K cpu, or if I could better wait until the next generation of proccesors. Or if I should upgrade something else? Pc specs; Cpu: Intel i5 2500 (3.9 Ghz) Psu: Coolermaster 550w Gpu; Asus 570 (stock clockspeed) Motherboard: Asus p8p67le SSD: Samsung 840 120Gb HDD: 1 TBCaviar black and 2 1 TB Seagate Case: Coolermaster HAF XM Cpu cooler: Coolermaster TX3 evo RAM: Team Elite DDR3 1600
  7. Hey Guys, I'm new on here because I recently started watching Linus Channels. Anyways what I want to know is what CPU/MOBO upgrade should I make from an I5-2300T(El Cheapo)? I was looking at the i7-3930k socket 2011 cause it has 6 cores and is OC'ble. Would it be wise for the future? Or should I go Haswell instead? Current Rig: Intel H67 Mobo(Acer) Intel I5-2300T 2.8Ghz CPU 12 GB DDR3-1333MHZ Crucial Ballistik MSI GTX Geforce 650 TI BOOST 2GB GPU 1TB SeaGate HDD Bitfenix Merc Alpha Case Zalman CNPS14X CPU AIR COOLER (it was 12$) Basically it's the Gateway DX4850-43CU they sold at futureshop. I was lazy back then and wanted something already built which could be good to work from. It's been good for the last 2 years but it's time for change. If anyone could help me on this subject would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance! Jon
  8. I have been looking at all the options and have come up with some local CPU's. One is an I7-2600 locked that was pulled from a workstation comp for 90$. The other is a 2600K for 100$ that the seller replied with this information. "Sure do. I had it at 4.5Ghz 24/7 at around 1.35V It can reach 5Ghz if you've got really good cooling ” With this much time on overclock I am wondering if the chip may be approaching the end of its life, and if the locked processor would be the better option at this point? I would also need to invest in an aftermarket cooler for the K on top of the CPU.
  9. Hey guys, What are your opinions on my voltage, my Core i5-2500K is clocked at 4.0GHz @ 1.165v and I've had it at 4.2GHz @ 1.185v stable after 11 hours of AIDA64 P.S I love Sandy Bridge so much, hard to believe my CPU is almost 6 years old now.
  10. Hallo Allo Wasn't sure where to post this, in motherboards or graphics. I guess since I'm having issue getting something to display then I posted here. I got given a Gigabyte DA-H77M-D3H motherboard with an i5-5200 Sandy Lake CPU. When I turn with just internal graphics, everything is fine. However I have a spare Sapphire r390 8gb. When I insert this, I don't get the boot screen, like not even the very first motherboard splashscreen / post screen. I don't know what's up or who to turn to. I have tried another graphics card ( rx580 8gb ) but same thing. I don't know if the PCI-Express slot is faulty or if the Graphics card are not compatible with the CPU/Motherboard. The manual did say that I need to have an Ivy Bridge CPU to get full PCI Express 3.0 and therefore optimal performance. I am not sure if that is an actual requirement to actual getting anything to display on screen. I have changed the setting in the BIOS to use the external graphics card first but no difference. I don't want to disable internal graphics from BIOS because then I really will be screwed and I don't think I should need to. I have heard Gigabyte support is poor and since this motherboard is way old they probably won't even fart in this direction. The graphics cards work because I have tested in another computer so no point going to AMD or sapphire. Could anyone please help? I am maybe looking for either steps to help solve or maybe if anyone can direct me to some entity that can provide support. I am in Canada, Mississauga.Toronto. Thank you in advance for any advice or direction.
  11. I bought a Z77 motherboard from a user on reddit.com/r/hardwareswap (great subreddit) and I installed it in the NZXT S340 case. Problem is it didn't have an I/O plate. Or so I thought. I found it in one of the bags the user shipped it with 5 minutes after I finished building it. So I installed the I/O plate and turned the computer on to make sure everything worked, and it did! After that I went somewhere else for a few minutes and when I came back to the computer it wouldn't turn on no matter what I did. What happened, and what are some possible solutions.
  12. I have a £120 budget for a short term CPU upgrade. I can buy a Z68 mobo to overclock for £30 if someone finds a unlocked CPU for £90. I was originally going to get a 3570k for £85 and a Z68 for £30 to overclock. What's the best CPU I can currently buy, used or new i dont care, that's 1155. I already have a 1155 H61M mobo. My rig is: i3 3220 GTX660 6GB RAM CX430
  13. Hi, I just recently built a budget gaming and workstation system using a z77 motherboard with an i5 2500 non k and 16GB ddr3 ram. However, later on I want to upgrade the CPU to something beefier to handle my workstation tasks more effiecently plus the games I play like having more than 4 threads and are somewhat CPU intensive. I really don't want to move to a new platform so I am looking at LGA 1155 CPUs, specifically the i7s and Xeons since my motherboard can use either. Should I get a i7 2600 non K, i7 2600k, Xeon E3 1240, i7 3770 non K, i7 3770k, or Xeon E3 1240v2? I'm trying to find the cheapest upgrade that will last me a long time. 14. Howdy, I've noticed since the whole Spectre/Meltdown news broke publicly my Sandy Bridge based daily driver is slower than it used to be though that might just be placebo. Regardless if the slow down is real, I think I've read that most of the fixes to really get rid of the problems won't roll back past Haswell. Is this the straw to finally upgrade a Sandy Bridge based system or does that soldered processor just keep on trucking if surrounded by modern stuff (SSD and GTX-1070 here) like that other Canadian tech channel's tests suggest Thanks
  15. I decided to get a quick upgrade from my trusty i5 2500k, from what I saw an overclocked i7 2600k reached performance similar to some modern cpus, crazy considering it's a Sand Bridge. I managed to buy a cheap i7 2700k over a 2600k, I googled the difference and some said that the 2700k was a binned chip? What does that mean? Also I know the sweet spot for the i5 2500k was 4.5gz, should I be aiming for that on the i7 or could I go higher? Would the age of the chip affect possible overclocking results seeing as it's about 6 years old now. Thanks!
  16. Greetings, Skylake has been lighting up like crazy, even I'm excited on the brand new microarchitecture Intel has to offer. But should you upgrade? Many have asked this question to others and themselves numerous times and the Internet as we know it, has answered those questions for all of you folks looking to move to a new platform. The statements above are related to those who are on previous microarchitectures (Devil's Canyon, Haswell, Ivy Bridge, and Sandy Bridge) and the comparisons herein. Benchmarks has already been performed and there's a plethora of information, both valid and fabricated. But I will provide only valid ones to comply with the guidelines stated. PC Perspective's test with discrete GPUs: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/Skylake-vs-Sandy-Bridge-Discrete-GPU-Showdown Their testing methodology is different, but confusing for an average reader at best. So I would advise to read how they did the tests to see how they stack up with Sandy Bridge before you make your decision. I didn't read the whole article, but what I could say is for single GPU performance at 1920x1080, Sandy Bridge held up surprisingly well for a four-year old microarchitecture. But when you add another GPU and run the cards in SLI/CrossFire, Skylake is clearly the winner the tests. But for most tests with a single GPU, it produced a 7-8% performance increase, which to me makes no difference at all in gaming performance. So to summarize this from PC Perspective, for those of you who are on their Sandy Bridge systems, be it mainstream or top-of-the-line at the time, just hold on to it for another year or so. But if you plan on or are currently running a multi-GPU setup, then Skylake looks like a compelling upgrade. But if you're building your first Intel system, then definitely go for Skylake. Now to Tom's Hardware's review of the Skylake SKUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2752766/skylake-upgrade.html They list and describe all the new bells and whistles for the Skylake SKUs, such as DDR4 nad DDR3L support, Z170 motherboards to go with it, and the CPUs themselves. But what I'm more interested in is should you upgrade? That's what I'm getting at here with this article, or so to say. But what they say for Haswell/Devil's Canyon users is to wait another year or so, while on the other hand for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge users is to go and upgrade as it offers a 30-45% increase in performance, but where exactly will users see an increase in performance? Gaming? Productivity? IPCs? So here are the quotes below here from Tom's Hardware: To summarize what Tom's Hardware has to say about it, to me it's a little polarizing when you look at both PC Perspective's article and Tom's Hardware's article side-by-side. But my stance will remain is to just stick it out for another year if you only do single GPU, but upgrade if you do Multi-GPU setups and/or you want to get the latest features that fits you well. From my point of view, if you were me, if you can wait, wait for AMD's Zen microarchitecture because they may bring much needed competition. If AMD just rips, then I would be floored because it has been both Intel as the go-to for performance and it has been that incremental 6-8% performance increase for four freaking years now, which, as a PC enthusiast, makes me want to hold on to my system for longer, even the top-of-the-line one for longer until something with a large performance increase like what happened with Nehalem when it was replaced by Sandy Bridge. Now to conclude this. Is it worth it to upgrade from your previous system to Skylake? I guess it's up to you to decide. Should you go to Skylake for your first system? Definitely go for it. But I would take my recommendation for you folks who are on their previous generation systems right now to wait another year or so. But ultimately you decide what's right for you. 17. I'm trying to overclock a 2600K on the motherboard mentioned in the title. However i'm unable to raise the clock frequency. It seems as if a custom multiplier has no effect on the clock frequency. Here's what i tried: SpeedStep has been deactivated. I also disabled C1 States (aswell as C3/C6). Disabled/enabled Turbo Boost. Set manual VCore at 1.2 for testing(Changing these settings works as reported by CPU-Z). Load Line Calibration is enabled. Tried setting the RAM at stock aswell as XMP(I know it probably doesn't do much). CMOS has been Reset. Board is running the latest BIOS(F7). The clock frequency still jumps around, as if SpeedStep is still enabled. Usually jumps between 1600-3800 MhZ. As seen here, the frequency does not go above 3800 MhZ when stresstesting, even though the multiplier states is set at 45. Also, I have no clue why it reports it as 16-45: Does anyone have a solution, or atleast a similar problem? Could the board be outright defective (RMA not available)? Thank you in advance.
  18. So i'm having trouble deciding between the P9X79 WS or the LE. I don't do much workstation grade stuff but i eventually plan to and i also like the look of the WS board better. Also a i7-3930K and a i7-4820K are going to run me about the same, which one is more future proof and faster.
  19. My old Corsair H100 all-in-one liquid cooler was reaching it's limits with the I7 3970X running at 4.6 GHz, so I decided it's time to cool my cpu proper I've had my R9 290s under water with 480 mm radiator for a couple of years (did that one pretty quick lol), but the cpu has always been in it's own loop with H100. I had I7 3820 before for a long time (ran it @4,3 GHz), but recently I swapped it to an old 3970X from ebay. This thing is power hungry on a complete different level. While the H100 certainly could cool it, I decided to finally add the cpu to the existing loop (and about time, I had 4x 10/16mm fittings lying in a box reserved for the additional radiator and cpu block to come for almost two years). So I also added a 360 mm radiator to the loop while I was at it. Sandy Bridge Extreme series processor still have soldered ihs and I read online the H100 flow rate really wasn't much to write home about (you could feel the inlet side of the radiator be much hotter than the outlet), so I was expecting some results. For reference, here's an old pic of the PC with H100: And here's now (I'm still leak testing so the side panel is off - I just completed putting it together and ran the tests): So here are relevant setup details: Old cooling setup: I7 3970X @ 4.6 GHz, Vcore ~ 1.37 V (offset mode, so voltage and clocks go down in idle) CPU cooling: Corsair H100, push/pull with 4x noctua fans Tim: GC- Extreme GPUs in their separate loop New: I7 3970X @ 4.6 GHz, Vcore ~ 1.37 V (offset mode, so voltage and clocks go down in idle) Radiators: 360mm (3x noctua fans pull) + 480 mm (4x Alphacool NB-eLoop 1200rpm push) Pump: EK-5D Vario (X- RES 100) CPU block: Alphacool NexXxoS XP³ Light - Acetal Tim: GC- Extreme (GPU blocks: EK-FC R9-290X - Acetal+Nickel (Rev.2.0)) Loop in series: pump -> GPU2 -> GPU1 -> 360mm -> 480mm -> CPU -> pump, tubing ~ 3m *added a Noctua fan to blow at the back side of the cpu socket (to provide more cooling to the backside vrms on the motherboard) Rest: I ran three tests on both setups: 1. Idle at desktop (system has been heated up and running at least 30 min before the test) 2. Blender (2.78.0 latest build) BMW 3D rendering benchmark scene (realistic 100% load on the cpu) 3. Prime95 (28.10) AVX small FFT (maximum CPU heat and power) In all cases the room ambient temperature was 21 C and all test were ran with fans and pump at full speed (to keep things simple for this). Crapload of data was logged with Corsair AX860i PSU and Corsair Link 4 software to spread sheets. Focus will be on CPU core temperatures and system power. Below are the temperature and power graphs from these tests. Results with H100 are first, and CL (= custom loop) follow in each test scenario. 1. System idle (mostly): H100 CPU cores avg: 30 C Custom loop CPU cores avg: 27 C PSU reported idle power is about 150 Watts in both cases (system was doing something during the jumps) 2. Blender BMW rendering benchmark scene: H100 CPU cores avg reaches: 72.5 C Custom loop CPU cores avg reaches: 49 C PSU reported power is about 400 Watts in both cases, but it starts to slightly increase with H100 to around 420 W as components heat up more. 3. Prime95 AVX small FFT: H100 CPU cores avg reaches: 83.5 C, hottest core: 88 C Custom loop CPU cores avg reaches: 57.5 C, hottest core: 62 C Things to note: H100 setup severely throttles at around 310 secs (either processor Tcase max 66.8 C is reached, or motherboard VRMs overheat) and test is soon stopped. The torture test is run longer on the custom loop while no throttling occurs. We start to see how heat affects efficiency, H100 system power: 450 Watts, custom loop: 420 Watts As a side note, the cpu seems to be pulling quite nice amps through the additional CPU power (8-pin pcie, marked yellow in the graph): So there you have it, and I'm extremely pleased with the results! And one last thing, I noticed that the CPU block contact surface was not entirely flat, but it was slightly raised in the center and edges. I considered milling it it flat, but the results are looking good, so I'll let it be I hope someone found this info interesting and if you want to share your experiences, please feel free to post below!
  20. I'm looking to replace my very old laptop with a desktop. I've got a 27inch 1440p display and peripherals, and I was looking at buying a refurbed OptiPlex or similar. There seems to be some quite good deals for systems with i7 2600's, but do they have much life left in them? Presumably Windows 10 support will stop for them at some point? I couldn't see a specific end date on ark.intel. I won't really be using it for gaming, just very light games if I do. It will mainly be used for browsing, office, and web development. Is it worth going for a 2600 in 2018?
  21. So here is the thing. If i compare an i7 2600 vs i5 6500, on paper the i7 is faster than the new i5. http://www.game-debate.com/cpu/index.php?pid=639&pid2=2...It says that i7 is almost 7% better in performance than the new i5. But thats performance on paper. My question is that will the new i5 perform better than the i7 2600 in newer games like Watch Dogs 2 or Battlefield 1? I am currently using the i7 2600 3.4ghz with my gtx 1060 3gb and it bottlenecks like hell... Watch Dogs 2 gives 30 fps. Changing graphics settings or resolution doesnt affect the performance either. (Thats a bottleneck right?).
  22. Hello community, I wanted to overclock my Xeon E5 1620, but as I tried changing the multiplier, it displayed everything correctly until I booted into Windows. It worked sometimes, but only in rare cases. All the other times it showed up with it's normal 3,6 - 3,8 GHZ. I know it worked sometimes, because it got better Cinebench scores and showed the correct frequency (~4GHZ). I can't seem to find why this happens. 23. My current build: CPU: Intel i5-3570k Mobo: MSI B75MA -P45 Ram: 16gb DDR3-1333Mhz (8gb x2) OS: Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB Data: 3TB WD Brown Drive Case: Sharkoon MidTower Case (not sure about exact model) Graphics: Palit Superjetstream gtx 1060 PSU: Seasonic 520W 80PLUS Bronze Certified PSU My computer is a few years old and has recently started to slow down for tasks like chrome and rocket league has been running at 90% CPU usage(My CPU also ran at around 100 degrees Celsius for about a month before I added a cryorig H7). I recently upgraded to a GTX 1060 replacing a 660ti with noticable improvements, but i still cant hit the magical 144 fps to match my 144 hz monitor. I have a budget of about 1000 bucks but hope to keep it in the 500-1000 dollar range. What would you do to up the performance of the above rig? I was thinking of either getting a new mobo that would let me OC the 3570k, going to skylake completely (i5-6600k) or the gtx 1070. Your help is much appreciated!
  24. Hi! I am really curious if I can enable hyperthreading on my i5 2500k. I know that intel lasers off cores, but HT isn't a physical thing, it's just a manipulation of the cpu. So I was wondering if it can be done via a custom cpu microcode/bios hack.
  25. I currently have an MSI X79A-GD45 motherboard paired with an i7 3820 at base speed and i was wondering what i could upgrade it with to gain some performance. Or is this a dumb question and should i just get an i5 8600k or i7 8700k?
