I recently bought MSI Twin frozr R9 290x for triple monitor gaming. But I have second thoughts about Twin Frozr GTX 970(although people in the shop told me that 290x is better for high resolution gaming than gtx 970), which is $ 20 more in my country. Should I return 290x and get a gtx 970? (Also is there any difference in 4k codecs of 970 and 290x?)

Do you think that the r9 290/x will be rebranded?

Hi, I'm using the Corsair CX750M and I threw a R9 290x in my system, and it worked fine and all, but later it died so I sent it back to Newegg. I started doing some PSU calculator tests and sites were saying to use between a 550-600w with a couple saying 1000. I didn't hear my PSU make sounds with the 290x in, but I didn't think it was worth ruling out. So as of right now I have a Sapphire R9 270x oc 4gb and I'm looking to upgrade. The card I really want to get my hands on is the Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-X 4gb, but after looking at benchmarks and what not, I don't know if I should go for that or a gtx 970. And even if I was to the gtx 970 route, I wouldn't know which one to get because I've been using Radeon cards for as long as I've had a pc to use it on. There is no need to worry about bottlenecks from the CPU, my rig is able to handle it. Specs: MSI Big Bang X-Power II LGA 2011 i7-4820K 3.7 GHz -plan to overclock to 4.3 GHz when I get a better cpu cooler Noctua NH-L12 -Yes, I know, why did I get this, it's for a smaller profile build NZXT Phantom 820 G. Skill Ripjaws X (2x8) 16gb 1 TB Western Digital Green Drive -Again, I know I should've at least gone blue Sandisk 32gb ReadyCache -This ssd is a storage cache SilverStone Strider Plus 750W 80+ Silver Asus DVD Read/Write optical drive so yeah, was just wondering which video card I should upgrade too, I'm asking here because everyone I know who has the slightest idea (don't personally know a lot of people into techy stuff, kids in my high school think it's weird) about computer tech are extremely bias towards Radeon, so GeForce is constantly getting a bad rap, but I just want a more varied opinion.

I have a powercolor r9 290x reference design and would like too cool it good. I am not specially experienced with water cooling, but I have seen this: http://www.amazon.de/Alphacool-NexXxoS-GPX-Backplate-Schwarz/dp/B00NYROY26/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1415522688&sr=8-5&keywords=Nexxxos+gpx I would also need a pump, tubes....... Would you recommend building a custom loop as an beginner? Is it really worth it and much better than other solutions? If it is ok to do this as an beginner does anybody know what pipes radiator and pump I should buy? My budget is in around 150 euro? (Is this enough?)

I have just sold my r9 290x, because it was too hot and loud (and the release of the 900 series). Now I am not totally sure which card to buy. I thought that sli gtx970 would be the best solution, but I have a Amd processor and because my old Gpu also was from Amd it only supports crossfire and not sli. So I could either buy one gtx 970 now and exchange my motherboard (and my CPU*) later on. Or should I just get the 980? Is it really worth the 550 Euro? I am not planning to play in 4k, but maybe in 1440p (or maybe 1600p). Or would a single gtx 970 be more than enough? (*I was anyways planning on buying a new CPU in around 3/4 year.) My other specs: Amd fx 8350 (overclocked to around 4,4ghz Noctua nh-d14 Bitfenix Shinobi Asus m5a97 r2.0 16gb ram Samsung 250gb ssd 2000gb hdd Be quiet 600w 80 plus silver 4 jetflo case fans I know I have already asked this, but I would like to hear some more opinions. Thank you everybody for answering.

So, my name is Lheevi, and im getting a Gigabyte r9 290x. And my CPU is the AMD A8-5600K. I also have 8 gigs of 2333 mhz ram, and an asrock motherboard. So my question is, will the bottleneck be in reasonable bounds? I mean, i know there will be a bottleneck, but, im more interested if its still gonna be good enough to still play Battlefield 4 on high 1080p, 60+ fps. Thank you for the replies

Guys, I will be buying 2 used sapphire radeon r9 290x tri-x oc 4gb link:- http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814202079 tonight, But how do I know I am getting the 290x not the 290? How do I figure by looking at the card that those are indeed 290x but not 290? I keep looking at pictures of both sapphire radeon r9 290x tri-x oc and the 290; but could not seem to figure out. They look exactly the same. No specific notation on the 290x card... P.S :- I am upgrading from EVGA 760 2 -Way SLI, is it worth the upgrade?

Hey folks! just wondering if I should purchase an R9 290x with aftermarket cooling or save extra for a 780ti. I've been seriously considering an R9 290x because of the price point and amd's never settle program, however I have been reading up alot on these cards and the consensus seems to be failures. Looking on Newegg, NCIX and Tom's Hardware for product reviews a LOT of people are reporting blackscreen, failures, overheating, rma's, artifacts and bricking. Would it be worth it to purchase one of these or gather some extra money and get a 780ti? According to AMD TressFX running on Nvidia is faster than HairWorks running on Nvidia. HairWorks is part of Nvidia's closed DLL GameWorks library that developers have been criticizing. The source code to HairWorks isn't public so no one can get their hands on it to optimize it except with permission from Nvidia. In contrast the latest version of TressFX (2.2) can be downloaded for free on AMD's website. The code is completely open to anyone including Nvidia, which is why it runs well on Nvidia's hardware. TressFX 2.0 Demo can be downloaded for free by anyone here. Full article

Hey guys. First time for me posting in this forum but I have been a long-time lurker on the LinusTechTips and NCIS Tech Tips youtube channel. I'm a college student from Germany. So please ignore any kind of weird sentences or spelling mistakes I was wandering if you guys could give me some advice or put some convincing arguments on the table which graphics card I should get. Current graphics card: R9 280X Sapphire Vapor-X (custom cooled with the "Alpenfön Peter II") 14.4 catalyst drivers Current CPU: i5 4670k Ram: 8gb 1300 DDR3 Option A: R9 290X Option B: GTX 970 Option C: Another R9 280x for Crossfire Games I play: Mainly Battlefield 4 Monitor: BenQ Xl2411T (so I'm trying to reach 144 fps or 120fps (together with strobelight) The concerns I have in mind: Despite the raw performance boost the GTX 970 brings in comparison to the R9 290X, having Mantle in mind I'm not really convinced that it will actually perform better in BF4 I would have to upgrade my PSU if I'd crossfired two 280x (although pricing for one 280x + psu is almost the same as getting one of the other cards) R9 280X uses GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1 on the R9 290X should perform better on mantle (would that be enough to run BF4 on ultra no AA no HBAO on constant 120fps?) The main reason I'd like to upgrade my R9 280X is that although I can run BF4 almost stable on 120fps (on Ultra Textures / Filtering and the rest on low / off) I'd like to ramp up the graphics a little higher while still remaining with a stable 120fps for smooth gameplay. I'd really appeciate any kind of input from you guys and I hope some of you have similar systems or experience with BF4s' Mantle performance.

I'm waiting for more GTX 970 reviews from sites I trust like anandtech and hardwarecanucks but after looking around I've come to the conclusion that I still want an R9 290. The 290 seems to have more overclocking headroom on the core and especially on the memory thanks to the sexy 512bit buss. I compared 290 reviews with 970 reviews and overclocked 290s even with the older drivers consistently beat the overclocked 970s. The GTX 970 is very cool but I don't see myself dropping 500$ on a g-sync monitor to go with it. Would rather get a freesync monitor instead. GTA V is also going to support Mantle according to various sites. Unreal engine 3 games in general really seem to favor Nvidia and a lot of review sites seem to benchmark unreal 3 games which I feel is a bit stupid considering all future Unreal games will use the Unreal 4 engine. Right now just waiting for AMD to cut prices. I'm eyeing the 290 vapor-x, such a sexy card.

Hey guys, I know this might be a bit of a heated topic, but specs, sound (Fan noise) , preformance, software and crossfire/Sli, what is a better gpu? Also, I am going to be upgrading from an Nvidia card, so if i got an amd card would it be plug and play, or would I have to uninstall nvidia drivers then install amd drivers? R9 290x: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HS866AK/?tag=pcpapi-20 Gtx 970: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NN0GIA0/?tag=pcpapi-20 Also, If you like one more than the other, do you recommend one more than the one I am looking at?

So this is quite interesting. Both cards have been listed on a German E-tailer's website with pricing. The GTX 980 is listed at 539€ and the 970 at 319€ . MSRP in the US is officially $549 for the 980 and $329 for the 970 according to the source. The GTX 970 listing has already been taken down but the 980 is still up there An R9 290X can also be found at amazon for $408, nearly $150 lower than MSRP. Seems like price cuts are imminent from the red team. Source

The R9 390X (Fiji) will be the first graphics card in the world to feature TSMC's next generation 20nm manufacturing process. A shrink from the current flock of 28nm cards. The product will also be the first to make use of 3D stacked memory, specifically the AMD and SK Hynix co-developed High Bandwidth Memory or HBM. This new 3D stacked memory technology promises to more than double the bandwidth of GDDR5 while reducing the power at the same time. The R9 390X will also be the first single-GPU reference card to feature hybrid liquid cooling code named "Hydra". The first ever reference card to use this was the R9 295X2 which garnered it as the fastest graphics card in the world, a record which it still holds. Digitime and semiaccurate both published independent reports claiming that the R9 390X will be released in the first half of 2015. 1H of 2015 obviously spans 6 months and it's still unclear when exactly the 390X will be introduced. However expect AMD to launch the new card as soon as it's ready. Images of the new cooling shroud has already been leaked so it's definitely very closer to the production phase. Full article here.
