My poor R9 280 struggles with the Witcher 3 with Ultra settings despite being overclocked. I got it running with all on Ultra except for water (high), foliage distance (high) and Hairworks (off). Even so, I was dropping to about 24 FPS in forest areas. So I turned down the resolution to 900p, but frankly it looked like arse. I went back to 1080p. Out of sheer desperation I decided to OC my card even further. I turned the clock from 1100Mhz to 1175Mhz. Of course, this did not make much difference (about 1 FPS). So here comes the weird bit. I increased the VRAM clock from 1250 to 1425. My minimum FPS jumped from 24 to 31 and keeping over 40FPS 99.9% of the time! Benchmarks (valley and Heaven) only show a 5% improvement, but my minimum on the Witcher 3 jumped by about 30%! This is the only game where I've seen such a dramatic improvement. How is it that this game is so susceptible to VRAM speeds? Has anyone seen this before?

So I don't have any money so buying a 2nd GPU ISN'T an option. I have a sapphire r9 280 vapor x. I was offered a trade for two sapphire 6870s. Thoughts? I've asked several places and have been getting mixed answers. Some people say that the dual GPU's would be better. Some say otherwise. Thanks in advance for everyone's input and for keeping it friendly : ) Here are the specs of the system right now. i7- 4790k MSI z97 gaming 5 4g Corsair vengeance pro Sapphire r9 280 vapor x corsair CX750m Dual pny SSD (raid 0) H100i Antec p280

Hey fellas I've got a budget build right now with a Pentium-K processor and a R9-280 (yeah not the most balanced rig) with a 500w EVGA bronze PSU. Do you guys think i could get a small OC temporarily until i can get a better PSU, say 3.5-3.7? I've done some wattage calculations and im running a bit under 400w right now, but with my limited knowledge of power supplies im not really sure if that's good or bad, please let me know what you guys think!

Hello. I have a question. Is it worth it to crossfire my current Sapphire HD 7950 with an r9 280? I only have a single 1080p, 60hz monitor. I can get either another r9 280 (7950) or just like a proper gaming mouse for Christmas. I'm slightly edging towards crossfiring my current 7950 but I don't know if it's worth it for just a single 60hz 1080p monitor. I play all kinds of demanding games (Far Cry 4, Battlefield 4 etc etc). http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TMnnwP --- My build if anyone is interested. The i5 2500k is running at 4.2 ghz.

Since I'm new to this forum and this is my first post, I thought I might tell you guys a little bit about myself, before coming to the reason you're probably here. If you aren't interested in this feel free to skip to the interesting part. I'm a 20 year old guy from Germany. Therefore my english might be a little off, but I try my best to keep my posts as close to real english grammatics as possible. I have been following the LinusTechTips youtube channels for a long time. I still know the times where Linus would unpakage the new stuff he got in the parking lot of ncix, but I never had any problems nor great nollege with PCs since I never really owned one. So I build my own a few weeks backand now I'm here. Interesting Part: I am experiencing the following problem: My ca. 3 week old Graphics card (Asus Radeon R9 280 DirectCU II TOP Active PCIe 3.0 x16) has a base clock of 874MHz and a factory boost clock of 980MHz. However my R9 is very picky about turning said boost clock on. Is there a solution or should I just try to return the card to the retailer and get a new one? I searched the internet, but I didn't found anyone have the same problem or a solution to the problem. I really want to overclock the card. I know it runs stable with 15%+ Powerlimit, 1100 MHz Coreclock and the Memory clock at 1500MHz I didn't touch the core voltage. I know it runs stable because I was able to test it during one of the sessions with the boost clock active. All the overclocking and monitoring was done with MSI Afterburner Version 4.0.0 and the Riva Tuner that comes with the Afterburner. I have the newest graphics drivers installed. I also have the Catalystcenter installed. Is it that interfering with MSI afterburner, since it has its own overclocking tool? I attached two pictures. One is of the overclocking settings and the other one is a ingame pic of Battlefield 3 with load, how hot it gets and a display of the non boost. For your information: I have the MB Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P Motherboard and a FX-6350 6x 3.9GHz and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. If you need any more information to solve the problem, just let me know. Every response dealing with the problem is appreciated. -Rasoar

Hey I was wondering about my new build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Private_Ceg/saved/s3bypg and im thinking about getting an r9 280 or the gtx 960 when it comes out and im wondering how future proof it will be? I will be using it for gaming and only in 1080p for now (at least 3 years).

So I am getting an r9 280 soon, and I was wondering what your recommendations would be on the brand. Specifically I am looking for best cooling and don't care too much about noise. I like Sapphire (oh god that blue pcb though), msi, and gigabyte's design, and XFX is way too expensive. However, gigabyte's model seems to have pretty meh reviews so I shall leave it up to the people who have a lot more experience than me in this field to give me recommendations. Thanks!

i have been pondering this question for a while now. with the holidays coming in im looking forward to snatching myself a new graphics card for a good price but im not sure which one to choose. i have considered waiting for the gtx 960 to launch but with the time i would have to wait combined with the likely $250 price tag in mind i would rather invest in something that's already out. im looking at either a gtx 760 or an r9-280. both are similar in price spanning many different brands but which side would give me the best bang for buck? i am looking for unbiased educated opinions. so please explain your answer. thanks in advance

Hi, I'm building a new computer, and I'm deciding on the GPU to get. I have to choose between the R9 280(X) or the GTX 770. I know the 770 is better, but there's a catch. I was told my existing monitor, the Dell E176FPc, has a maximum frame rate of 60 FPS. It only accepts VGA-in, so I have to buy a GPU with a DVI-I out to use a DVI to VGA adapter, that's why I cannot get the R9 290. So, I have to choose between getting the GTX 770 and reusing my monitor which can potentially ''bottleneck'' the GPU or the 280(X) along with a new monitor. Any thoughts? Thanks!

So I am going to get an r9 280 (non-X) soon, and I was wondering what brand you would recommend. Right now there is a deal on at ncix for the XFX card, and I really like the looks of it, let alone that with the deal the card costs less than any other brand's versions I can find. I don't have ample cooling (see file), so a good cooler on the card would be nice. Any suggestions? Thanks! (sorry for the bad image, done with google drawings)

Both these cards are right in my budget, and I can definitely go no further so don't try recommending anything to me unless it is just SOOOOOOO much better for the money. Anything over $250 = no go. So anyway, what card is better? In my system, I already have the A10-5800K which has an integrated HD 7660D in it, if that matters. Right now I'm leaning towards the 280 because of the free games it comes with. Normally I would say I just want above 40fps on mid settings, but I think I really want to be able to max out some games at 60fps+, and based on the reviews I've read both these cards can do that. Thanks in advance

There comes a time in a man's life when he must face his fears and do some pretty testicle shrinking things. After weeks of unhappy temperatures, I decided to removed the heatsink from my Sapphire R9 280 and replaced the thermal compound. Removing the heatsink from the PCB was a lot harder than I anticipated and cleaning the old TIM did not go smoothly (it went all over the transistors). But after 30 minutes of carefully cleaning while holding my breath and thinking "OH MY GOD! I'M KILLING MY VIDEO CARD!", I applied some Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 (that's all I had at hand), re-assembled the card and plugged it back in it's slot. I turned on the PC and was greeted with a cheery black screen. Then fans were not spinning. THE CARD WAS DEAD. Not surprising since I forgot to plug in the power cables. After plugging it correctly this time, it booted up correctly and began to test. I use Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition with AA turned to extreme as a heat test (I swear, it absolutely thrashes your GPU). With the PC room at an air conditioned 23C, running the GPU core at 1140Mhz with the original TIM, it would peak at 82C with 85% fan speed. Since applying the new TIM, temps have dropped to 75C with 74% fan speed. The noise level has dropped significantly too! Man, I'm still shaking but I think it was worth it.

Hey guys, first time PC builder here. I need some help finalizing a build that someone else on Reddit helped me with: Under $700 budget build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LHDnXL. I've been looking up reviews everywhere for the different brands of this card since new egg reviews tend to say power color has a lot of coil whine. The reviews on XFX were pretty solid, and Asus as well. Any help choosing the right card, and other feedback on the build is much appreciated, thank you.

Hey guys, So I'm looking to upgrade my video card, and at the moment I'm running a dual monitor setup both 1920 x 1080 monitors. However I was looking to get another one which is 2560 x 1080, I want to run all three of them but only game on the 2560 x 1080 monitor, the rest of the time it will be used for web design and Photoshop work. My budget for the card is under $400 (but I do live in Australia), and I was looking at an R9 280 at the moment, but I'm not sure if it will be able to support it. So any recommendation would be great. Thanks for your help.

It all started a few weeks ago when I bought a Sapphire R9 280 Dual-X something something. Since I live on the edge, I immediately overclocked it from stock 840MHz to 1085MHz (OK it was gradual, but it wanted to sound hardcore). I tested using Heaven and Valley for a couple of hours and it all seemed OK. Sweet! Couple of days ago while playing Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition with extreme AA, I noticed the temps reaching close to 80 degrees with 85% on the fans, so I decided to test with Furmark to see worst case scenario. It reached close to 90 when it locked up and had to reset. I tried dropping to 1035MHz and tested with Kombustor furry doughnut. After 10 minutes or so, it bluescreened. Finally, stability was reached with a 1000MHz core clock . At least now I know I have a stable OC and the temps are OK, but I can't help this sense of loss at what it was with higher clock speeds. A sad day.

I'm looking for graphics card that i can use to do some 1080p @45-60fps gaming, preferably max settings with games like bf4, bioshock infinite, Saints row IV and the like. i was planning to get the r9 280x for a long time, but the r9 285 just got released and it seems that it has more features and can handle most games at 1080p. Should i stick with the 280x or go with the 285? Help!
