I live in south east UK, aka 'the land of the queen'. I have left "College" - NOT THE SAME AS UNIVERSITY. I currently have not got any job lined up...yet --- Do companies in the gaming industry ever provide apprenticeships? The only field I can find apprenticeships in is in traditional areas like the steel industry, etc. Basically, in those apprenticeships, I'll be coding general purpose programs. Not that that's boring - I do love maths and coding, but I was hoping I might find an apprenticeship in gaming. --- Also, would companies in either the gaming industry or IT companies involved in more general 'stuff' look down upon me if I start a career in one field and then switch? So lets say if for a year or two I start making games, but then change to the other field or vice versa - obviously providing I go for an apprenticeship in the other field or have the necessary experience anyways. --- Furthermore, last Q, how would you recommend I start a career in gaming? I am interested in making games on PCs, preferably on Steam. I also do not mind creating in browser games (Applets I think they're called?) - only to get started though - unless I get involved in an awesome project/game of course. I am also interested in making games for the 3ds - but from my understanding, Nintendo restrict indie devs or other devs from not making games for the 3ds unless they're involved in a well known company or something like that. I'm also interested in making games on Android - simple games only, not "console quality". Because by principle, I am against mobile games because of the freemium route the android and ios marketplace have taken. Though I understand making mobile games could be a great way to get started. --- So... any careers help?

Hello good folks, I'll be going to university this fall. Thing is: I am on quite a tight budget because I am saving up for my main rig at the moment... Are there any Laptops you could recommend for programming, office and all the stuff you do at university for around 300€ ? Doesn't need to be anything fancy - just so that I can work with it without going crazy because of how slow it is A decent battery life for doing stuff while commuting would be nice, too. So far I've looked into these laptops: - Asus R515 MA Intel Pentium N3540 4 Gigs of ram - Lenovo M30-70 (There are only a few left on this offer... might be gone by the time I have the cash ready) Intel® Core™ i5-4210U 4 Gigs of ram - Lenovo B50 - 45 MD Vision A6-6310 4 Gigs of ram... again Any help is appreciated so thanks in advance PS: Sorry for my mediocre english. English isn't my mother tongue and I didn't have english in school for like... 4 years. So please excuse any typos and/or bad grammar but feel free to correct me

Hello! So I would like to begin to make games in Unreal Engine 4. I already know that Unreal Engine 4 only supports C++ as it's scripting language, so I would like to know if there is anywhere where I can get tutorials for using Unreal Engine 4, and also scripting in C++. Thanks!

I'm really sorry, I'm sure you guys get this question a lot. I want to start working on small games and other projects, the kind of stuff you could do in Scratch in an hour or two, but with actual code. What language should I do this in? I have previously dabbled in JavaScript (the most I have made is a rock-paper-scissors game) and I have just about scratched the surface of Python, Ruby, and jQuery. If it helps, I do know fairly advanced HTML and CSS. Furthermore, what should I learn this language with? I have found that Codecademy was not very application-oriented and focused more on basic, browser-popup based stories and games. Thus, my knowledge is quite limited. Thank you for you time.

Hey everyone! I would really appreciate some help finding a good, inexpensive laptop I can take to college in the fall. I'm going to be a computer science major, and I have a budget of $800. It's no big deal if the system is configured with an HDD, because I already have a 256GB SSD I can use to replace it. I'm not a big gamer at all -- most of the time I'll just be running Chrome, Office, and a development environment. I do want a system with strong battery life, however (6+ hours), and preferably a 1080p display. So please let me know if you have any suggestions! I've just been overwhelmed looking for a good laptop, since there are so many options out there.

Want to learn developing universal windows apps. Where to start?
zahin posted a topic in Programming
As the title says, I want to learn developing universal windows apps. Now, I'm a bit lost. I don't know a lot of programming. I only know the basics of C++. I thought that I'd be able to learn by following tutorials on Microsoft's websites. So, I jumped right in. First, I downloaded Visual Studio Express 2013. Then followed this [ https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/ff402526%28v=vs.105%29.aspx ] tutorial. But it didn't seem to match with anything and so after fumbling around for a day, I found another tutorial [ https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn631760.aspx ], this time for developing universal apps. It matched fine until I hit an error loading the designer. I couldn't fix it and now I don't know where to go. Do I need to learn something else before jumping in development? If not, which tutorial should I follow? If I have to follow the windows dev center one, how do I fix the designer problem? Please help, I'm desperate.- 6 replies

Hi for my GCSE, I have to learn another language. I have learnt python (kinda) but for my second language I don't know the difference between C#, C++ and Java. (insert noob comments here). What one should I learn and why. I want to make some simple text based programs and maybe some simple RPG games in the future. Also, what books do you recommend for such a noob. Help is appreciated, Thanks!

I'll start with a small piece about how thankfull i am for a community such as this and for what Linus's videos have done for me. if it wasn't for his videos and the people here on this forum i wouldnt be sat here typing on my 6 month old gaming computer. (also for the friiend that showed me the way to his videos) The pc of which i am stupidly happy with as i didnt think i could build one before nor did i think i could. that aside, the point of my post.> (please excuse spelling its been a long day) After taking a gap year in the Canadian mountains and devlopiing an unhealthy obsession with moving there some day i took a course in the electrical trade with the intention of my hopes and dreams being fulfilled of moving out of this awful country. So now i am just starting my 3rd year of my apprenticeship and really starting to hate it.. severly. I love computers and i had no idea how muich uintl i realised that all of my hobbies revolve around creative software and computers at some point. Skateboarding> Video editing Playing Guitar> Making backing tracks on audio software. Gaming> explanation? I have many hobbies, Skateboarding of which recently broke my leg and dislocated my ankle which is why i sit here askling advice of the LTT community about my future in coding. My wonderfull girlfriend said why dont you try coding because of her course she allready has a good idea about this subject. Iv been taking a do this in your own time type online uni course. Unlike Electrics and the way the trade works and how the people are Coding seems like the way forward for a career choice. Work in somthing i enjoy rather than take any old trade and get in to canada. I guess my question really is Where do i start? What language do i start with? Any advice? Career advice? Any programmer puzzles and really helpfull lessons you have found online? Life as a programmer advice? Do i just quit my awful course or use that as a back up in case i screw things up? (i know the sensible thing to do would be to finish it for many reasons. (back up plan included) but with the way tech is moving forward surely there would be good prospects in the future.) Good courses to look for? Please anything you have, Vague as you think it may be i will google loads and loads to get the best idea i can about this choice. Or even if there is anyone else around that started training in somthing else and now work with computers and just wants to share thier experience please do. Anything goes in here even if you want to tell me im a god damn idiot (for a reason) Lastly im 24 Y.O./Male/ and i live on the south coast of England wishing i lived in Canada. D': Thanks for your time. EDIT>::: I must add i have read other similar threads before people say this same sort of thing has been answered but i just want to know your thoughts on my situation and just to spark some ideas and conversation.

So, I am a 18 year old teenager who just started learning programming for about 1.5 years in polytechnic (its sort of like high school, but its more to the technical side rather then academic). I came across Rust while reading some forum on C++ and I am curious about what other programmers use Rust for. I understand the features and benefits that it brings, I am just curious about what people are doing with it.

So I am a self taught programmer who has been programming since the age of 14 (5 1/2 years experience), I have absolutely 0 schooling or training on the subject, everything I've learned has been done through books, web resources and my own research/experience. I've never had a hard time with programming but my biggest flaw as a programmer is that I don't know how to plan properly project. I've always just started a project with an end goal and just programmed towards that which has worked fine for learning. But I am at the point now where I have a (fairly large) software product idea which I would like to pursue but I think my method of just winging it without a plan or design won't be sufficient especially if I am bringing other people into the project. So for those of you who are in the industry how does your company go about the process of designing/planning a new project?

What I'm trying to do is write two functions that each generate a list of random numbers. After the lists are generated I want to use another block of code to check the elements in list 1 and if an element from list 1 is in list 2, I want it to append that element to a new list and at the end print out this new list. I can't get the functions to cooperate. I thought this should work only because the functions take no arguments. Thanks in advance. Ignore the top commented out block. Here's what I got.

Hey guys, I am entering my first semester of a computer programmer program at my local college in around a month, and I need to order a laptop ASAP. I am a stuck in regards to which model to purchase that I'll be happy with over the next two-years. I'd like to spend about $2K CAD before tax, but can spend a bit more if a better fit is a bit more. The device will be used a lot for visualization and Hyper-V, as well as programming in visual studio and other environments. I'd also like the device to be fairly thin and light since I will be carrying it around with me in a bag with my books on my lap (I am in a wheelchair). Decent battery life would be a plus so that I don't always have to be plugged in if I am not in a location for an extended period of time, or engaging in a heavy workload. Below I will list a few requirements and desires: Requirements: i7 16GB RAM Dedicated GPU (preferably an Nvidia GPU) SSD Desires: Clean design (I don't really want a tacky gaming laptop look) IPS display (I don't really need accurate colour representation but would love a nice display given that I'll be looking at it for hours every day As little plastic as possible on lid and keyboard area NOTE: Located in Canada. Thanks for the help, Devon

I have wanted to learn C for a very long time now and I can not seem to find something good, codecademy does not have a course on C and I do not have the money to pay for a membership for Lynda.com (Yes I know what LTT offers 10 day free trials, but that is not long enough.) Are there any good free courses anywhere or something that is really cheap. I want to learn in order to be able to actually write my own code for my Arduino and maybe make games in Unity once I have learned well enough.

**NOTE!** This is not a advertisement for Unity3D nor am I affiliated with Unity3D! Alright so as the title has implied what do you think of Unity3D? and the future of indie friendly game engines like Unity? With so many 3D and 2D game engines coming out that allow for rapid development, Unity is one of the top hits among indie developers and the likes. With Unity's 3D and 2D functionality you can make games in Unity to your hearts content because Unity's main language is C# it is very easy to begin scripting because lets admit it C# is a darn easy programming language! Now this is not to say that Unity isn't the only easy to use 3D and 2D game engine out there there is also Unreal Engine 4 which can give you stunning graphics with minimal work and with Unreal Engine 4's Blueprint visual scripting it is hands down another top hit among indie developers but it's undeniable that Unity's UI is more user friendly and with Unity 5. Unity can also sport some really stunning graphics. So what do you think of Unity? This brings me to my last question what do you think of the future of Unity and the direction of these types of game engines as a whole?

Hello! So i'm writing a program that tests your math knowledge. I am a begginer in programming and i need help with a problem. How can i repeat a method 10 times. This is how my method that i want to repeat looks like: public static void Deljenje () { Random numGen = new Random(); int num01 = numGen.Next(1, 21); int num02 = numGen.Next(1, 11); Console.WriteLine(num01 + "/" + num02); int answer = Convert.ToInt32(Console.ReadLine()); if (answer == num01 / num02) { Console.WriteLine("Bravo!"); } else { int responseIndex = numGen.Next(1, 4); switch (responseIndex) { default: Console.WriteLine("To pa ni prav!"); break; case 1: Console.WriteLine("Bolj se potrudi!"); break; case 2: Console.WriteLine("Poskusi znova!"); break; } } } Ps. just ignore the values in Console.Writeline - s. i'm slovenian Thanks

so my friend Is offering to sell me his 2012 MacBook Pro and I was debating wether it was better to buy this MacBook Pro and upgrade it or buy a new asus zen book both will have about the same specs (except for the processor)and will cost the same(about 700$ U.S) but I don't know what would be better for me. The MacBook will have a dual core i5 and the zen book has a core m. I will upgrade the Mac with an ssd and ram to match the zen book but I don't know which will be better for me. I have a powerful desktop computer at home but I need something on the go, it doesn't need to be so powerful because all the heavier stuff I will do on my desktop PC. I love both of the computers designs but I need to know which one is better. Also the OS doesn't matter
