TRANQUIL STREAM Gidday LTT forums I’m going to be putting together a submerged streaming PC for my lounge and here shall be my build log. I’m hoping things will progress at a reasonable pace but it will be very dependent on how work goes as at the moment I can only spare a few hours here and there (a good chunk of which goes to gaming or drinks with friends)… anyway on with the show... Background: I was originally planning a small water cooled custom gaming PC but as I got further and further into the planning stage work got busier and busier so that had to be shelved, the other project I had rattling around in my head was a file server upgrade but alas for that I needed the case my gaming PC currently resides in About this time Steam in-home streaming added support for Nvidia hardware encoding which got me thinking “why don’t I make a low power streaming PC for the lounge?”, pairing that thought with my long time curiosity about mineral oil submerged systems this project was born! Aim: To create a low power PC that can handle movie and Steam in-home streaming while not being too time consuming. Hardware: I started by looking around for suitable hardware, after reading that basically any Intel CPU with Quick Sync could handle Steam in-home streaming and with all the noise about the new Pentiums at the time I was thinking this would be a good choice but came to the forums fist looking for input/experiences. After a suggestion from Electronics Wizardy to look at the Baytrail platform I came across the Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V, a quad core Celeron with a 10W TDP adding to that 8GB of DDR3, a 80W picoPSU, a Samsung 840 120GB SSD and a Hauppauge DVB-T tuner I had lying around I had my base hardware to work off. Peripherals: There were two main types of controls I would need for this build, the first being a wireless keyboard and mouse for ease of use on the desktop and the second being a couple of gamepads, this being a lounge PC the games will be casual multiplayer games for the most part (Nidhogg, Mortal combat, console emulators, etc.). After looking around a bit I found a nice clean looking keyboard with a built in trackpad so I wouldn’t have to fumble around with a mouse on the couch, it’s the Rapoo E9180P. The controllers will be Xbox ones because I find my current 360 one very comfortable, I was hoping to get Xbox One controllers but at this point there is no wireless option for the PC so unless they come out before I finish I’ll be settling with a pair of Xbox 360 controllers. Design and housing: After the core components were decided upon I could get into finding a suitable aquarium to build around and nut out a design. I ended up settling on a Dymax IQ5 aquarium (including pump) because it was a nice size for a mITX build, admittedly it was a little taller and deeper then I would have liked but those are things I could work around and it happened to be on special at the time. A while later I had come up with this: This is still a bit of a WIP and I’m crap at doing natural forms (rock and drift wood)… well that and I don’t have the time to spend gussying everything up, even the motherboard was pulled from my gaming PC design (ASRock Z77) but it’s enough to get me going. The dimensions are 280D x 230W x 315H. In the meantime I ran around trying to find the elusive white mineral oil without having to get it shipped from overseas (the cost of shipping on several Kg of oil was never going to be pleasant), buying 60 x 200ml bottles of baby oil or something impractical like that. I also looked at air pumps, bubblers, gravel and liveries. As luck would have it I managed to find some mineral oil locally (a company called Canadian Oil of all things ), after going in to collect a 20L bottle and having a bit of a chat to the lady at the warehouse about what I intended to do with it I managed to get a decent cash discount which helped keep the budget in check Some of the considerations while designing the case were: Wicking/siphoning – Due to the aquarium being slightly taller than I would have liked I wanted to have the I/O under the water line to keep the board more central, this is something you generally try to avoid due to the cables wicking and ultimately siphoning the oil out of the case so to get around this I will be building a custom I/O PCB at the back of the box with some short run cables creating a break point between the inside and outside of the box. This panel will also have some convenience items like power/reset/clear CMOS switches and light/pump control. Mineral oil resistance – Some materials don’t respond well to mineral oil so I am trying to soak samples of everything I intend to put in it from tubing to bubblers for at least a week to see how they hold up. So far everything has gone well with the exception of plasti dip… because the memory and picoPSU I have are on green PCBs I had intended to plasti dip them black but after putting a small length of plasti dipped tube into my soaking jug and waiting a couple of days the plasti dip coating had turned to jelly so the next step will be trying regular spray paint. Heat – Because of the low power system heat isn’t a concern so no additional radiator etc. would be required however I am considering adding a fan to the CPU heat sink purely for aesthetics. Stickers – All stickers on the parts will have to be removed as the oil will dissolve the glue and leave me with barcode fish swimming around in my tank  Check valve – A check valve on the air line is necessary to prevent any siphoning when the air pump is turned off which would likely be a common occurrence to both mute the sound and visual distraction when watching movies etc. Bubblers – I wasn’t sure how much air pressure I would need and if I wanted to go with a bubble wall or air stone so I picked up both a wall and stone and grabbed the weakest air pump for a starter (Blue Planet Bubbilo SP100) as in theory it would also be the quietest with the thought I could keep one upping it until I had a satisfactory flow. As luck would have it the pump was more than enough, I now just have to decide on whether I prefer a column of bubbles off to one side or a wall across the front of the motherboard… at the moment I’m leaning towards the wall but am concerned it might be a bit much? What do you all think? A column of bubbles coming up from behind the driftwood or a wall across the front of the motherboard (back of the chamber)? UPDATES: UPDATE #1: I/O and control board UPDATE #2: Ready, steady, bake! UPDATE #3: Pew, pew lasers…

Hey guys, first post, so this is the project, i've been designing/building a HTPC for personal use with some parts i had laying around. i've designed the case using some sketchup models and 20/40 aluminum t-slot profiles (i got the idea from slick's test bench vid) I'm posting the renders for now i'll update with current build state and specs Note: specs are limited by what i have laying around the house and some cheap especializad parts i will order later ( i live in colombia so sourcing parts and materials is sometimes difficult)

So I'm planning to waste loads of cash in the very near future (Within the next 3 weeks) on a 1440p surround gaming setup w/ 3 GTX 980's, hopefully achieving half-decent frames in modern games. Stay tuned as this will be my pseudo-Build Log. R2D2 Was built for video and picture editing and gaming. Reason for building was my 7 year old macbook died a slow death. This was my first time building a PC, and it was a lot of fun . CPU: I chose the 5930k over the 5820k for more pcie lanes (40x) CPU Cooler: I chose the H220x because i plan to include the graphics card in the loop and I'm a noob. If I would have waited a little longer I would have gone with the H240x and all 140mm fans but they did not do any sort of advertising for it at all and I had no idea it was coming out. (Image was corrupted) Thermal Compound: Because you need it. Motherboard: This choice was a vain one, I liked the streamline look of the Deluxe and wanted a white build. Not to mention the amount of expandability. Memory: This too was a vain choice. I've been watching videos of computer builds for a couple years now and have always wanted the Dominator Platinums. And hey, DDR4 so yeah. SSD/HDD: I chose the 850 Pro because of the 3d v-nand technology and the 450-500mbps transfer rates, and I chose the SSHD because I was curious about the technology and performance. Graphics Card: I chose the 780 6GB DDR5 because of the amount of memory and it performs adequately. Not to mention I entered it into the EVGA STep-Up Program so within a month or two I will ship it in and get it swapped for a GTX 980 ACX 2.0 for the difference in the two cards + shipping costs. Case: I chose the Enthoo Luxe because LED's. And because I like the look of Phanteks cases and windows (unfortunately mine was scratched on the inside due to little to no effort to tie down the accessory box so it was flailing around inside the whole way here) Another thing that happened was the front panel that goes over the fan grill has standoffs that you screw into to hold it there. Two of the four standoffs came off in shipping and were attached to the screws that were supposed to hold it there. I removed the standoffs with a pair of pliers and epoxied them back to the front fan grill panel. It's now solid as a rock but still unfortunate it happened. And also it matches my motherboard "luxe" and "deluxe" Power Supply: I had originally bought a Corsair AX860i Power supply from Newegg, but upon arrival I cut through the cellophane and got into the box and noticed there was a sticker that said "if sticker is damaged please check contents before acceptance." The sticker had been completely and obviously torn off and re-stuck. So I RMA'd it for a refund and drove to micro center the next day to pick up the EVGA 1000w P2. I chose this power supply because EVGA has great customer service and its more than overkill for upgrades. OS: Windows 8.1. Meh. Also looking forward to Windows 10. Case Fans: I will never again buy Corsair SP or AP fans (the ones with the rubber corners at least) Because I didn't even tighten the screws down all the way flush to the case before the rubber corner wrenched itself out of its holding and was physically impossible to replace the way it was. I had to drive to micro center (again) to get one fan. Which turns out the LED versions of the AF quiet editions have no rubber corners so I was happy. Also the rest are all Noctua fans because I wanted good PWM controllable fans for the H220x and matching fans for the front. Keyboard: I am using an $8 walmart keyboard to type this, I will be purchasing a keyboard in the near future. I've been looking at razer keyboards but I want to try the Cooler master Novatouch keyboard. I haven't decided. Mouse: I had the Razer Naga already and its by far my favorite mouse I've ever used. Headphones: I chose the Astros because I was a console nerd before I realized PC was the master race, and it's cross compatible with all of my systems. PLANNED UPGRADES: Another 850 Pro in raid 0 for the boot. GTX 980 ACX 2.0 (as stated previously). Perhaps another 980 in the distant future. First adding the graphics card(s) into the H220x loop, then a full custom loop. Swapping all fans for 140mm fans (and 140mm radiators respectively) A decent keyboard. EVGA white P2 custom single sleeved cables.

Hi, This build will be primarily for gaming, but I will be also be using it for a little bit of render work. I've decided to discard my last build plan as I wanted something with a bit more space and airflow and so that's why I went for a bigger 450D. I'm trying to keep this around $1500 AUD. It'd be great if you guys could give me any tips and suggestions for parts as I'm still yet to decide on a few. Thanks PARTS (NOT FINAL) CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K CPU COOLER: Corsair H100i MOTHERBOARD: MEMORY: Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 16GB (2x8) STORAGE: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB STORAGE: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB FANS: 2x Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition LED Fans and a Corsair AF120 Quiet Edition Fan GPU: PSU:

Got the main components: CPU, RAM, MB and some other stuff..more on the Pentium later.. Ready for the test bench: Now it`s time to try some graphics cards. I ended up with an ancient GTX 9800+ (best card i own at the moment) after comparing it to a GTX 550 Ti. (waiting for Maxwell) Ordered the case and some blue sleeved cables! While i was waiting I installed everything in my old modded Bitfenix Collossus. Photos of the NZXT case and the system are coming soon! I still need: Dx11 GPU, MSATA SSD, a SILENT PSU (im using a random 750watts psu with a broken fan ) and some lighting in the case. Altough the Intel stock cooler is very silent with the Pentium (60wattsTDPmax) I will buy a custom water-cooling setup in the future.....and maybe an i5 Looking forward to a Corsair RM PSU for now. The case arrived... I somehow got my hands on a Dual GPU version of my graphics card on ebay for 20 bucks ( Asus EN9800GX2). It is doing a very good job (scaling in SLI) but it's definitely too loud:D First assembly: :o :) Cable Management at it's best! Waiting for Corsair PSU..

Hi I want a new PC for gaming cause my old one broke. I'm a ROG fan cause i think the quality is great. I already got an SSD with 256 GB and an HDD with 2 TB. I already own the Razer BlackWiddow 2013 (Keyboard), Cybotg R.A.T. 5 (Mouse), BenQ XL2720T 68,6 cm (Monitor) Here are the parts: Case: Corsair Obsidian Series Schwarz 350D Micro ATX PSU: Corsair AX Series 760Watt Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H105 Front base: ASUS ROG Front Base (ROG) Graphics Card: Asus GeForce GTX 780 Poseidon (ROG) RAM: Corsair Vengeance Red 16GB Mainboard: Asus Maximus VI Gene (ROG) CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K If you think I could change something or add some stuff for example more fans just tell me. Sorry if my English isn't that good I'm Austrian. I know that this build isn't the best for the money

So i soon will be building a server build for a business (not mine), and I'm used to and have experience with putting together gaming and workstation builds, but I'm not positive about server builds. Just to be sure, I thought I'd post the parts here and let you smarter people pick it apart. The partpicker link is http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3FKWo, but it doesnt have the motherboard i'd like to use or support dual cpu setup. MOBO: ASUS ASMB6-IKVM CPU(x2): Intel Xeon E5-2620 RAM: Corsair XMS 64GB (8 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 SATACARD(x4): IO Crest SATA III 4 Port PCI-e PSU: Corsair 760W 80+ Platinum HDD (x22): Western Digital Red 4TB CASE: RPC-4020 I know 88TB seems outrageous, but its what they asked for and im not going to question it. Any suggestions / notes are greatly appreciated.

Story: So my brother bought a different GPU to replace his old one that is going into the Family computer. Since I've upgraded my PC quite a lot... ...the motherboard, CPU, and memory from my old build are going into the family computer. WARNING: LARGE-ish PHOTOS

I recently purchase my Cooler Master HAF XB EVO case. Loving it already. Though i don't have any of the parts installed, or purchased. I noticed a little flaw with in my case. one day I wanted to show my Mother the MOBO tray out of the case so she has a better understanding of the current day PC stand offs (I have little to no knowledge of the previous stand offs if they were the same or different). When I decided to put back the MOBO tray the thumb screws didn't go in straight, on one side. I tried to screw in the "issue" side first and they are crooked. I noticed on the Cooler master website, I can purchase another MOBO tray if needed. Is there any help without sending this back or purchasing a new MOBO try or case? What I mean is, what tools I need to make the hole better for my thumb screws? I swear, I don't know where to put this thread. http://www.coolermaster.com/case/lan-box-haf-series/haf-xb-evo/ (A link for you to the Case I purchased.)

So my first build happened on fall 2009 using X58 build. Used it for 5 years switchig graphics cards, SSDs, RAMs, Overclocking CPUs (which really didn't go quite well). Even though the X79 platform came out, I carefully waited for Haswell-E to come out. And it did so I started a second build project which will become a successor of my old X58. My old build was as follows: Intel Core i7-920 D0 (Right now settles at about 3.8Ghz) Kingston HyperX DDR3 PC3-12800 Memory (6 x 4GB) OCZ Vector 256GB SSD 2x EVGA GTX 780 Ti Reference Model in SLI EVGA E760 X58 Classified Motherboard (This board is still not dead yet!) Creative Sound Blaster Fatality Pro PCI-E Sound Card Corsair H50 Cooler Corsair AX1200 Power Supply Lian Li PC-P80 Case My New build parts list: [As of Sept 10] Intel Core i7 5960X [GOT!] Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 PC4-21300 RAM (4 x 4GB) [GOT!] AsRock X99M Killer vs. (Future Asus ROG Micro-ATX Board here) [GOT!] Silverstone Strider Evolution 1200W Power Supply [GOT!] Corsair H80i Cooler [GOT!] ADATA Premiere Pro SP900 256GB M2 [GOT!] [Returned: I made a mistake with PCIe based M.2.] Plextor 256GB Slim M.2 PCI-E [GOT!] Silverstone Fortress FT03 Case [GOT!] I'm going to take the challenge to fit all these parts into the case, if you know what I mean by people who used FT03 before. Pictures and status to be updated if I get more parts in... [As on post #23: Currently trying to find sweet VCore spot for 4Ghz. Already at 1.18V and the CPU gave in after 30 min of Prime95.] Sept 22 14: [Declaring FINISHED for now, even though it's not really complete. When I get extra time, I'll work on adding a window to a panel and paint motherboard heatsinks to further match black / white color. Thank you for watching and I appreciate your responses!]
