Hi there, Here's my current build, before I go on with my question: -XFX FX-777A-ZNF4 Radeon HD 7000 Series; AMD; Radeon HD 7770; 1000 MHz; CrossFire; 2048 x 1536 pixels; 2560 x 1600 pixels (FX-777A-ZNF4) -Intel Core i3-3220 3300GHz 3MB Cache Socket LGA1155 Desktop CPU -Corsair CMX8GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 8GB (1x4GB) DDR3 1333 Mhz CL9 Performance Desktop Memory Module -MSI LGA1155 u-ATX Motherboard (Intel H61, 2x DDR3, GBE, LAN) -500 WATT ATX POWER SUPPLY QUIET 20-24 PIN with SATA -LiteOn IHAS124-04 24x SATA Half Height Internal DVDRW Drive -Seagate Barracuda 3.5 inch 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive -Fractal Design Core 1000 Series Micro ATX Case Firstly, I'm going to be upgrading my PSU very soon (within a few weeks), so there's no need to point that out. I will also be upgrading my GPU to a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming at Christmas, but before that, I want to upgrade my CPU, so that it doesn't bottleneck the GTX 970. I have had lots of recommendations on staying on Ivy bridge and upgrade to the best possible 3rd generation Intel processor. Others have recommended that I should upgrade to Haswell, since there are many improvements over Ivy bridge, and that it would be cheaper. However, if I want to upgrade to Haswell, I will also have to upgrade my motherboard, which would cost even more, and I would also have to reinstall windows. Others have advised me to wait for skylake and upgrade to that, but I don't know what to do. I'm also thinking about waiting for Skylake, and then upgrading to Haswell, as the release of Skylake would drop the prices of Haswell CPUs. So, what would you advise me to do in this situation? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies to help me. Cheers!

So I'm giving my old PC to my mother and making myself a new one ~$500 budget and I was wondering: how does the Haswell Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition compare to the Ivy Bridge Core i3-3240. The i3 will have 4gb ram and onboard graphics, whereas the Pentium will have 8gb ram and a GTX 750 Ti 2gb. All ram is 1600MHz (excluding graphics ram). I will most likely overclock the Pentium to 4.0-4.2GHz. Any information is helpful!

Hello, Is there any risks of damage the socket's pins by installing a heavy heatsink of 870 grammes ? This is my Scythe Mugen 2 Revision B 2100 model on my MSI Z77A-GD65. I had it installed for two years, and a week ago I had to sent my mainboard back to RMA. The error was 55 on the debut led that means something about the ram happend, and, clearing the cmos was impossible because I couldn't even do it before while the mainboard was alive.

Do you think that Ivydridge will still be good until Skylake is released? I was going to get haswell but IVB is cheaper and Changing two different Sockets doesnt appeal to me very much when Skylake is introduced in 2015 along with the socket change.

Hi all! So I started a build log previously, but I am starting a new thread because the old one was very disorganized and hard to see the progress of the build. Specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/MrDavid5465/saved/1vnQ Here are few shots of the components I used. Most of the components installed and cable managed. Got the windowed side panel for the case. That was a trick. Had to get it from the Netherlands. Shipping cost more than the panel did. Not going to hide these components though. Installed CPU (3770k) and cooler (Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO) Installed the GPU (MSI 780) I'ts in the second slot because my first slot is defective. Gotta call ASUS to RMA =( Additional glamour shots Enjoyed building this build hope you enjoyed viewing it!

Hey forum, I am looking at buying some parts for my build, and I noticed a really good deal on an Asus P8Z77-V Pro motherboard. I am able to get this for about U.S. $120, which is pretty cheap considering the features it has. The catch is that it's the Z77 chipset. I was planning on getting the Haswell based Xeon E3 1230v3 and a $240 Gigabyte motherboard, but then I saw this deal and switched my focus to the Ivy Bridge based Xeon E3 1230v2. The Asus board has all the features I want, and I am saving $120. But, is it worth the $120 to buy the Gigabyte and Haswell chip? Is Haswell that much better than Ivy Bridge, or will I not notice the difference? I was thinking I could buy the Ivy Bridge, and use the money to go towards my GPU or an SSD or some other part. And another quick question: how long can I run a computer out of the case (like run a "test bench" on my motherboard box?) My case sold out and it's gonna be on backorder when I buy it, so I will have all the pieces to run a PC just not a case to put them in It will probably be about a week to two weeks before I get my case, so is it okay to run a PC like that for that long? Thanks!

Hi I am upgrading my PC and at the moment I have a 980x Extreme Edition CPU but I am unsure whether to go for the Ivy Bridge-E or the new Haswell. I know the new Haswell-E will be coming out this year but it will be crazy expensive. I currrently do video editing, web development/design and gaming. If I am honest I do more gaming than video editing but I do want to overclock my new system. I just wondered what people's thoughts were on this? Thanks

Ivy Bridge And Dual Channel Memory Problem
VojtaSim posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hi everyone, I ran into a problem when I started using Kingston HyperX 8GB 1600Mhz 1.65V with my Ivy Bridge CPU (i5 3570K) and it could only run in single channel (A1,A2), but then I discovered Ivy Bridge does not support memories with 1.65 voltage. So I bought Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz 1.5V instead but the problem still remained. I was so angry that I spent so much money. I disassembled my PC from the base and then I put components back but instead of CPU cooler I put in there the stock one -> PC ran just fine. So I switched to non-stock cooler and it ran as well. I guess the problem was in CPU placement. Now the Memory is running in Dual-channel and CPU temperature decreased to 31°C idle and 49°C full-load so the new placement helps this way too.- 3 replies

Hello there! sysloc here with my first "publicised" build and log of just that. I am finally getting to build my own gaming rig, after finally being fed up with pre built machines and outdated hardware and junk. Some important information; I am extremely well versed in computers. That being building, fixing, customizing, upgrading, and just all around know-how. I go for what works and generally what works the best. (To what I can find anyway) System will be used for heavy gaming, heavy media creation (Adobe Suite) and whatever else I can throw at it. The reason I am posting this is to get feedback for my choices and to see opinions, don't worry about budget too much. I just want to see what the general thought of my part choices are. I don't know what else I should say, so I'll just list out my parts list and let you have at it! P.S: think of this build more as overkill, I know it is excessive in some areas. So like most of you I am somewhat of an enthusiast and really like to get the most out of my hardware and scowering the internet I seem to only see success stories of my fellow enthusiast who seem to have won the silicon lottery and get beasts of chips and it isn't really the most pleasing to me as I have lost really bad this time. MY current processor 3570k at best gives me 4.2ghz at 1.325v and you can imagine that it isn't the coolest chip. I look at these other lucky bastards getting like 4.6 - 4.8 on less than 1.2v and am just here like probability is one evil bastard. In the future I would really like to get a better chip and dont mind paying an extra $20 or so for it so where can i get binned chips?

Hi guys. Yay, first post and new member! Linus seems to have a great community here. I have most of the parts needed to watercool the machine in my signature, and just wanted to test how far my cpu would overclock. Someone sad they would never go above 1.375 V on an ivy bridge so i just set the voltage to a fixed 1.375 and my multiplier to 50. The computer just did a reboot loop after the windows logo. Then I started taking the multiplier down and got a successful boot at 47 multiplier. While stress testing with prime95 CPU-Z showed that the processor was running at only 1.272 V. It died after a few minutes of stress testing. And my question is: Why won't it go past 1.272 V because I'm pretty sure that it could do a stable 5 GHz at 1.375? I can post my bios settings later if it helps.

Hey guys I made a nice little (or pretty big! lol in a 800d) computer last year. It has great stuff for the time such as 3770k, gtx 680's, intel 520 ( i think) ssd's 16 gigs of dominator ram with 2 more open card slots along with lots of harddrives spinning at at least 7200 rpm. I liquid cool'ed the whole sha'bang and did some overclocking but I am debating if I should clean reset it as I have just got a new pc. I am hoping to squeeze every bit of performance out of this beast at all cost and was wondering what numbers I should strive for in term's of overclocks and which programs you suggest for over clocking as i am using asus gpu tweak and intel extreme tuning i think? I Would love to get as much out of this pc I can and am willing to shell out some more money on it. Thanks so much guys!

Hi guys, i'll build a new computer but, i don't choose yet the platform 1155, 1150 or 2011, many recommend me haswell but, i don't like it so much, i hear isn't much overclockeable. I want a durable platform, do not have to upgrade in a year and a half or two. The principal use is for games, but too i'll use adobe and autodesk suite. What do you recommend? - 3820+MSI X79A-GD45 (4 dims version) - 3770K+MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming Edition - 4670K+MSI Z87A-GD65 Gaming Edition All combos cost the same in my country (i'm mexican) Thanks.

I built this a year ago back in June 2012, just thought I'd post it here. It's a watercooled mini-ITX system I built as a HTPC for my living room which is also my "Steambox" whenever I feel like playing from the couch. Only the CPU is watercooled. Reason being, the 7850's stock cooler is super quiet and performs very well. This also makes swapping cards easier as I don't have to deal with additional tubing. No modifications were done on the case except removing all HDD cages.SSD is mounted on the right side panel. Okay, so after about two months of building my rig, I decided to go into CPU overclocking. I started by using CPU level up, which took my CPU up to 4.6 GHz but was extremely heavy handed on the voltage, bumping it up to 1.350v. After much validating and booting to bios I managed to decrease the voltage to 1.240v tested under 7 hours of AIDA64. I'm unsure of how low that is, but I've heard that it's pretty good for Ivy Bridge. (I was getting an average of 70 celcius on hottest cores, 64 on coolest) I tried going down to 1.235, and only had time for a 2 hour test. I went into playing a few hours of battlefield, and after what must have been 3-4 hours I got a STOP error and my PC restarted, so I moved the voltage back up to 1.240. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I need help!

Hey Guys, I will build a new rig towards the end of this year. But I'm kinda torn between Ivy and Haswell. Fact is I will definitely buy an ASUS RoG Mobo. I would pick the ASUS Maximus V Formula (189€/258USD) for Ivy and the Maximus VI Hero (166€/227USD) for Haswell. But I can't decide wheather I should go for more features (Maximus V Formula) or for a bit more performance and less features (Haswell+VI Hero). I'm not sure if its worth going with Ivy so I need some advice.

So i'm having trouble deciding between the P9X79 WS or the LE. I don't do much workstation grade stuff but i eventually plan to and i also like the look of the WS board better. Also a i7-3930K and a i7-4820K are going to run me about the same, which one is more future proof and faster.

Hello guys! I am sorry if this question has been asked a lot but I just have a quick question: My current set up has a i5-3550 quad core with an Asrock extreme pro4 (I believe) and I do want to upgrade for all the next gen games. Should I upgrade to an i7-4770k and a MSI z87-g45 or should I just get the LGA 1155 version of it? Sorry if its confusing! I plan on trying to OC because I have always wanted to try it out, and also I am starting to do video editing and streaming
