Well I have noticed some bugs here and there as well as some hiccups with my system. Even within the past few months my computer has at times seemed to slow down, but a good old reboot seems to set it straight. I have thought that it could be the hard drive croaking but was not willing to drop $150 to $200 on the superstition with minimal evidence in my eyes. Well recently my younger siblings told me that wifi was not working on the computer. I checked the wifi with my phone and it was working fine. I took a look and everything was frozen with that amazing looping circle fibbing to me that something was actually happening. I tried pulling up Task Manager, no response, I waited about 5 min no response. I did a hard reboot and the BIOS or UEFI (may have butchered that) said that I needed to select boot media to use. I tried booting it again and it caught on and began loaded up a bit slower than usual. Still though when the home page pulled up the icons took several minutes to load and on top of that nothing in the menu was responding well at all. I turned it off and tried again (I think you guys are thinking that I am trying to break it on purpose, which I kinda am because I wan't an excuse to buy an SSD). This time it booted from the bootable usb drive that I had. I had the option of reinstalling windows, but I decided to have it run diagnostics on it. It basically said that the operating software was not workable. I looked at the error code as well and it looks like a re installation with a boot drive would be needed. I have included a picture so you guys can have a look for yourself. I reckon that there could be 3 culprits at this point, 1. The windows software is corrupted. I doubt this though. As I type now I have rebooted the computer after leaving it off for about a half hour (I think heat may effect it a bit, but, the hard drive is only mildly warm to the touch. I have been able to have look at the files stored to make sure there is nothing on it that I desperately need. Still though it is not very responsive, and now seems to have slowed to a crawl. 2. Ransom ware in action running my hard drive in the background. I was able to pull up Task Manager on this recent reboot, and it showed that the disk was running at a 100%, but had it listed as "Microsoft Malware Detection"(Not exact phrasing), which is I believe is just windows defender running in the background. It was running at about 3 mbit which is nothing and shouldn't use 100%. Even when that disappeared, it still was using "100%" at about 0.3mbit. I have also noticed an interesting process that I have not seen before called "Windows Shell Experience Host"(Exact Phrasing). I know that the words "Shell" and "Host" are related to network connections, but I am not sure if this is really a concern or a process that I never noticed before. 3.The Hard Drive is dyeing and now I can justify buying a new SSD! I have considered Hybrids, but I am thinking it would stink in the event that the disk half failed before the Solid State drive. So having the separate may worth the extra $30 or so in my eyes. I think I may need to look at the cables before I ask for suggestions as I am unfamiliar with the different types. My computer is not a top notch gaming rig. It is used for moderate gaming and internet browsing. That is about it it. I may do video editing in the future but nothing on a professional level. Thanks for any suggestions. I have written a lot, but my main question is whether or not my hard drive is failing.

Hi Everyone, Three questions, 1) Can bad sectors on a drive be transferred from one to another? 2) Can a backup be affected by a bad hdd? and 3) I got a new hdd and tried to download windows updates on it, and i couldnt get them to download. Could there be a reason for that?

So, I just watched the new "Which video card to buy Late 2016" episode on Vessel. And this gave me an idea for what could be interesting content. Premise: What does it take to make a CPU fail? (And how much can you get from them at the absolute limit) Actual content: Through either stock in CPU's in LMG or by procuring them otherwise, a logical, organized (spreadsheets?) bench test of many of the popular CPU's dating back to say LGA775 or so and push them as hard as possible under normal conditions (meaning, water cooling but no exotic stuff like Liquid Nitrogen). Start with basic overclocking. Look for the thermal limits with voltage and multiplier, then once those are established try to make the CPU fail by either removing the heat management incrementally, or by pushing voltages far beyond reasonable for the given CPU. The idea is to show how much abuse these things can take, and to also show that benchmarks can give you a number, but the real-world robust-ness of a CPU package compared from generation to generation. No I don't expect the most current CPU's to be destroyed, because that would be expensive unless Intel and AMD were willing to allow it. And yes, I know this would be a long-term setup, or multi-part series. And it would be highly complicated. Kind of like a video version (highly simplified) of Passmark's CPU benchmarks, but pushing past those levels. Basically it would be like dyno-testing a car engine until it fails (or explodes). It's fun, shows weaknesses, and can provide useful data to improve later versions.

So recently, as in like the past week, my Computer has had random shut-offs. They are usually few and far between, mostly happening when I go to bed and forget to shut down, but they have become more frequent. Not to extent that it is an immediate issue, as in I can't use my PC without it shutting off, but it is an inconvenience and I'd like to fix it before it gets too bad. Now, I already checked Heating, not extensively, but my CPU and Motherboard were at 43 degrees Celsius/109 degrees Fahrenheit, Not good! I may have had Xbox game cases sitting on the top which were effectively plugging vents. I removed the cases and cranked up my Air Conditioner and now I get a cool 27 degrees Celsius/80 degrees Fahrenheit. I am posting this at 2 in the morning so I will explore power issues more in the morning, like the Power Supply and Surge Protectors. I pray to God it's not a Hardware issue! My PC is over $2000 and I can't afford a Hardware Failure, though I am insured if it comes to that. I will admit that my HDD LED has been blinking for sometime, but that couldn't cause my Computer to shut itself off, could it? I have scanned my Computer many times for Viruses and nothing. I have AVG. I will provide more information when prompted.

I currently have a dual SLI 970 setup and recently I have been having an issue that is extremely annoying. When I am playing a game everything will be fine, stable fps, no stuttering, then all of a sudden I drop to 10 frames for about 15-20 seconds and then everything is fine again. This happens about once every 30-45 minutes. My temps seemed to be fine on the gpu(80). CPU temps are fine. Drivers are up too date. I'm not sure what it could be so any suggestions would be great. I do not have access to my PC until Friday night so I will not be able to test anything as of right now. All of my specs in my signature are up too date.

Hello LTT community, Today I have come to you with my first dilemma that I have been unable to solve on my own. Recently I purchased a new power supply for my rig while I was out of town, and was very excited to get it setup when I got home. Unfortunately, I was very tired after a night of drinking, getting 5 hours of sleep, then driving for 5 hours. So I believe that there is a very good chance that my problem was due to user error but I cannot be for sure. So I get home and remove my old PSU, and hook up the new one. I plug everything in and boot up my pc. It starts as normal but then I soon realize that 3 of my hard drives are not recognized by the PC. I check the cables to make sure they're all plugged in - and they are. After a bit more investigating I realize that the drives are not even powering on. I try plugging them into different SATA connectors, and even into a different computer entirely and am unable to get the disks to produce any sign of life. I decided to remove the control board from one drive to look for burn marks, as the SATA power cable may have shorted them somehow. But I was unable to find anything that looked out of the ordinary. I ended up sacrificing the same drive and opened it up entirely to see if there was any visible damage inside the enclosure, which I was unable to find either. Does anyone have any other advice as to what may have happened to my drives? I refuse to believe that they are broken for good. There has to be something I can tweak, solder, or replace to get these guys up and running again! Thanks, Alamist

I'd like to know what causes power supply failures (especially on generic power supplies) and under what circumstances will a burnt power supply damage other hardware? (e.g., if a psu was toasted due to overheating, will these potentially damage other hardware in my rig?)

Hi guys. I built a PC in May of this year, which had been working fine until a few days ago. I left it on while I went out, and when I came back a few hours later, the PC was off. I tried booting it back up, and the fans came on and the mobo lit up, but there was no POST. The light on my backlit mouse came on for half a second and then went out. On the MSI mobo, the EZ Debug LED for CPU came on for five seconds, then went out for around ten, then came on for another five, and so on.I figured the problem was either the PSU, mobo, or CPU. The PSU seems to be fine, as I used a multimeter to find that all the voltages were good in the connectors. I then got a replacement mobo (same model) at MicroCenter, and I'm having the exact same issue. I've tried breadboarding, clearing the CMOS, and testing with one RAM stick in each slot, with no success. Everything seems to point to the CPU being the problem, but I've read that CPU failure is extremely rare.According to the Ryzen Master app, my temps were around 50-65 degrees Celsius while idle, but apparently it reports temps as being 20 degrees higher than they actually are, so my temps were actually less. Also, not sure if this is CPU-related, but I noticed that randomly, applications (whether it be Chrome or Skyrim or whatever) would completely freeze for like 10-20 seconds and then function as normal.Any help would be greatly appreciated. My parts:Motherboard: MSI X370 Gaming Pro CarbonCPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700xCPU cooler: Noctua NH-L9x65 SE-AM4RAM: G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 PC4-19200 2400MHzGPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC 6GSSD: PNY 240GB CS1111 internal 2.5 inch SATA III Value Solid State Drive PSU: EVGA 700 B1 100-B1-0700-K1 80+ BRONZECase: IN WIN GT1 White SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower

I have a refurbished 2TB Seagate Pipeline Hard Drive that failed after only 215 days since purchased. I believe that the files on the disks are OK, and that the problem is in the control board, or something similar. Drive was working fine one moment, then suddenly I was not able to access it. Then Windows started prompting me to format the drive to be able to use it. Needless to say, I have not formatted the drive. I can read the SMART info using SeaTools, and Recuvva let me see files on the HD. Nothing life-changing on the drive - just over 120 HD quality movies and a couple dozen multiple seasons of TV shows - it was about 75% full. I've pulled the drive from the system and will wait until I have some options for recovery before putting it back in. Any idea on how to get this drive up and running again without formatting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I (Idiot) accidentally spilled soda on my computer and it messed it up and it won't turn on now. I'm suspecting that the motherboard died as it got severe amounts of liquid on it so what should I do now? I acted fast and wiped off most off the liquid that got into the PC. i don't think anything else has broken because they didn't get as much soda on them but who knows?? What's the best thing to do now? Any advice?!?

So I tried to boot my Ryzen system off a live USB with Ubuntu 17.04 and It failed spectacularly, image attached showing the screen with some funky broken text. Anyone else had this issue? seen a few Ubuntu stability issues on Ryzen but nothing going wrong pre-installation of the OS. NOTE: boot drive is known go, booted my laptop successfully from it after the desktop failed.

So I got an SSD a few days ago, Samsung 580 Evo 500GB. I cloned my old HDD to it and everything. After I formated the old drive, I moved most of the files back to it to save space on the SSD. Then I downloaed SSDLife to see what's up, and BAM ( not a bus). It's showing a ridiculous amount of data written to it. After 4 days of having it, it has already over 1400gb written to it. Okay, the cloning was about 450 and I installed GTA a couble of times but still. Yesterday it had 79gb written on it in ONE day. I didn't do any of it, just gaming and browsing. As of last night (12 am) it has already written 20gb into it. So what the F**K is that about?I tried monitoring with SSDReady and I see constant activity in idle, which is normal of course but I can't see the amount of data written. Any ideas?

I put together my new build, but whenever I turn it on all of the fans come on but the monitor says it's getting no signal. The parts I am using are: Asus b150m-A D3 motherboard intel i5 6400 2.7ghz (refurbished) Thermaltake 500w power supply EVGA gtx 960 Hyper X 1600 ddr3 memory I get no beeps when I turn on and I have tried plugging the monitor into the onboard graphics to see if it is a Gpu issue. I cleared cmos and I tested with different ram. The motherboard has orange lights that turn on when but I do not know why. Could it be a CPU problem because I bought it refurbished? Thank you for any help

I have a SanDisk SD card I've been using with my camera for a while, and it's worked fine. However recently every time I plug it into a a windows PC, I get a little corner notification saying "There's a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now to fix it." It clearly actually is having problems, because at the same time Windows started saying that, the card occasionally disconnects then immediately reconnects while it's plugged in. This happens on multiple card readers and PCs. However when I tell windows to scan the drive, it doesn't find any errors, and I'm back to the same thing, still having issues. Is the card just screwed? It's less than a year old, so why would this happen?

Hello,I recently ordered the corsair k70 LUX (non-RGB, red LEDs) with MX browns. When I went to check the forums, i noticed that many people were reporting dying LEDs, as soon as 6h after delivery and the most recent report being dated July 2016. It wasn't for the lux models, but I still want to be sure that I didn't order a cca. $130 keyboard that will fail on me as soon as I get it.I actually prefer the non-RGB model because I don't like the excessive light spill on RGB versionsSKU: CH-9101022-DEThank you.

So my hard drive recently had the magic smoke appear from its circuit board. I believe that the physical hard drive mechanisms and platters are fine inside the hard drive. I was wondering if there is an easy way to get the hard drive to start up, or if i could even take a circuit board off of a similar hard drive and use it on this one to get the data off?

So I've got an old HDD (500GB Seagate Pipeline HD) that has finally died. When plugged in it is not detected, and at regular intervals every couple seconds it makes an audible humming sound for half a second or so. Sounds like something's trying to initiate, but can't. There's some data on it that's not absolutely necessary to recover, but I would like it back. Does it sound like something I may be able to repair?

hello all, this is my first time asking question here on linustechtips :) i have a question about hdd grinding noises... i have two hdds stacked together with a usb non power hub connected to my macbook when i copy files between them, those two hdds will make HUGE grinding noises and will copy slowly. but then it will stop copying and disconnect a while later.. if i take out one hdd from it, it wont make any grinding noises and work well like nothing ever happened... i bought the usb hub because i needed more ports for work(you know macbook has only two usb ports haha) my first guess is limited current making hdds spin slower therefore heads crashing to the disk... and then eventually fail? im so dumb why did i do this....i shouldve just connected two hdds separately(and maybe all the other peripherals on one side).... im now worried about the hdd that might have been damaged by many MANY head crashes... im currently copying files that has been failed before to see if anything got damaged, .... nothing bad so far... should i be worried? thanks for any replies :)

Hello, me and my brother use the same pc, he plays League of Legends and we all know how that game can be frustrating. He got mad today and smacked the Desk hard with his hands, and at the same moment, the PC turned off on its own. It's been a hour and I'm trying to turn it on again but the HDD just won't start up. It makes a weird noise when starting up. Can this even cause a HDD to fail? Audio recording 2019-08-09 21-29-42.aac
