Debian Swap Partition not working
mmmeee15 posted a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Hello, Hoping someone can help with this question: I have few a debian servers, xeon based, with SSD as main drive, which have a swap partition (created in the normal fashion through the installer). I have upgraded / bought a new server and have just moved the drives from one server to the other (probably not the best thing to do, but was in a bit of a hurry). On one of the servers/SSD nothing out of the ordinary happened, everything is working no problem. But, on the other, everything is fine except that the swap partition can't be activated/used. Swapon -a posts the following: swapon: /dev/sda5: swapon failed: Invalid argument I have checked with fdisk, blkid and fstab, and everything looks completely normal there. Any ideas or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks -

Specs CPU: Intel i7 8th gen GPU: Nvidia GeForce MX 150 Required Driver: nvidia-driver-430(back-ports maybe) So, Its been over a few months now me looking for a solution for this issue. I have tried almost every distro in order to find a manual guide to set this up on debian buster. Issue is the guide debain's official site has posted is outdated and results in broke-up reboot which results in a black screen. Due to which I have to use tty to purge everything nvidia and dpkg reconfigure and stuff. If on LinusForums anyone has ever encountered this exact issue please respond, this thing is getiing out-o-hand now! I have reached out to debian IRC community also but no solution.

Hello everyone, So for the context: I'm currently trying to setup a diaspora installation on my private VPS system. I've installed all the packages, and done all the configuration necessary, but I'm missing an important part without which I cannot go forward. I can't generate a let's encrypt certificate because It's ending in error. First it's telling me when launching the "certbot --apache" command that "No names were found in the configuration files" When I've properly configured the apache server with the diaspora.conf file and disabled the default 000-default.conf file. Then if I go ahead and input the domain name I want to register which is pod.diasporing.ch I get the following message: Failed authorization procedure. pod.diasporing.ch (tls-sni-01): urn:acme:error:connection :: The server could not connect to the client to verify the domain :: Failed to connect to xx.xx.xx.xx:443 for TLS-SNI-01 challenge IMPORTANT NOTES: - The following errors were reported by the server: Domain: pod.diasporing.ch Type: connection Detail: Failed to connect to xx.xx.xx.xx:443 for TLS-SNI-01 challenge To fix these errors, please make sure that your domain name was entered correctly and the DNS A record(s) for that domain contain(s) the right IP address. Additionally, please check that your computer has a publicly routable IP address and that no firewalls are preventing the server from communicating with the client. If you're using the webroot plugin, you should also verify that you are serving files from the webroot path you provided. I've checked the A record of my domain and it's correct. I've also checked in iptables to make sure that port 443 is open and listening and it is. I've also checked on the apache side to make sure that it's listening on https, and it is. I don't know what to do anymore. Thanks for your help.

Hello everyone, I've been wanting to switch to Linux from Windows for a long time now. I've tried several flavours of "newbies" Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, ZorinOS and ElementaryOS. But never for long since I needed Windows for the university or for games. But, now, I say "that's enough!" and let's start my journey to Linux. I have chosen Debian. I like the fact it's stable and that they don't release a new version every 4 months (like Linux Mint). Plus it's now possible to easily install the Cinnamon DE from the installation, and I love Cinnamon from the time I was playing with Linux Mint. Day 1: Today is the day! I went to the Debian website, downloaded Debian 8 aka "Jessie" and installed it onto my new SSD. For now I keep my Windows 10 partition, just in case, and to play my two beloved games (Age of Empires II and Worm.is).The installation went smoothly, for the most part. I had to install Debian twice since the first time, it wouldn't boot once the installation was complete (first time boot). The second time, I've not encountered any issue. Sweet! So, here I am with my new Debian OS. The first challenge is right ahead of me: the screen resolution is only HD and not WQHD (2560*1440p). Well, "that's not a problem, I can handle this" I'm saying to myself. WRONG. I have an Asus Strix Nvidia GTX 970 GPU. So I look on Google to find how I should install Nvidia's proprietary driver. I find on Debian the command on how to download it: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Debian_8_.22Jessie.22 But my apt-get doesn't work. Why? I went back on Google. I find out that I need to add more sources to my "sources" file (etc/apt/sources). During the installation, I chose "ftp.belnet.be/debian/" (I'm from Belgium), but it appears that source doesn't allow me to install anything. So I try to change that source to "ftp.fr.debian.org/debian" (from France). But when I try to edit the sources file, I cannot edit it! Damn. So... Back on Google, I find out about VIM or NANO. Great. I try nano on the terminal, and miracle! I can edit the sources file. I save everything and, finally, the "apt-get install xxx" works. I install the Nvidia driver, restart the computer, and tadaa, here is my mighty WQHD resolution (BenQ 3200PT): Day 2: So, I have my Debian OS installed. Now I need to install several things. First, the Citrix Receiver to be able to work from my own computer and not from the tiny Dell Laptop from my work. After having installed the Citrix Receiver, when I try to open it through Firefox, it would not launch. Great, another challenge! I look on Google, and it seems that I need to make Firefox's certificates accessibles to Citrix in order to launch it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1975705&p=11916234#post11916234 So I run the command and, once again, Citrix works. Having Windows through a Debian computer, I find it fairly great :). That same day, I want to watch the Red Devils on the RTBF website (belgian TV through internet). But my computer appears as it is in France and not Belgium. Probably because I have chosen the locale fr_FR (I have a french layout keyboard, not a belgian one). So, I use once again Nano to edit etc/default/locale. I restart the computer. Right after booting into Debian, it says the locale changed and that the folder's names have changed to the right langage (French to English apparently ("Téléchargements" to "Downloads", "Musique" to "Music", etc.). But when I try to launch the terminal, it won't launch. What now... I look on Google, and I see many topics stating the same issue after changing the locale file: https://forum.antergos.com/topic/2555/terminal-stopped-working-after-changing-the-locale-conf/2 and http://askubuntu.com/a/743377 I want to change back the locale back to the original one, but since I cannot launch the terminal, how am I suppose to edit the file?! I scratch my head, and think that I could probably install a new software acting as the terminal. But how to install softwares without terminal? I look on Google, and find out I have to use "Synaptic". I install Terminator through Synaptic, that allows me to change my locale back. I reboot, and finally I can access my terminal. That doesn't solve the initial issue (unable to watch belgian TV) but hey, I can live without it.

Hi everyone! Recently, I found a very old server somewhere at a local hackerspace, so I figured, let's make it work again, so I can replace my Raspberry Pi B+ by an actual server. I searched a LONG time to find a Linux Distro that would work on the machine, and the only one I could make it work with is 'Debian 6.0.3 Squeeze'. So after setting up the system, I did the default routine: "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade". When I did "sudo apt-get install apache2" it printed out this: "Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: apache2 : Depends: apache2-mpm-worker (= 2.2.16-6+squeeze11) but it is not going to be installed or apache2-mpm-prefork (= 2.2.16-6+squeeze11) but it is not going to be installed or apache2-mpm-event (= 2.2.16-6+squeeze11) but it is not going to be installed or apache2-mpm-itk (= 2.2.16-6+squeeze11) but it is not going to be installed Depends: apache2.2-common (= 2.2.16-6+squeeze11) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages" I am sure I didn't make any typos because I quadriple checked it. I already did some research, but I haven't found anything useful yet. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks! EDIT: For everyone who has the same problem, I seem to have fixed it. I changed the content of my /etc/apt/sources.list by the text you can find here: https://wiki.debian.org/LTS/Using After doing that, I read the rest of the web page, which actually shows a much shorter and cleaner way to do it. So if you have the same problem, I recommend to read this web page.

Installed Debian 8 live to try and make my first home server (Following this guide from user MG2R). After booting from a USB drive and selecting the command line install option, it asks me for the username and password. I tried several combinations, and tried many more from google with no luck. I've attached a picture of the error message. I won't be able to get to the computer until tomorrow, but I will be here to answer any questions. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

So I have an old Macbook 13inch I got for back in 2007. Still boots up, still runs moderately fine, but its stuck on OS X Leopard. The machine has a 2.16 Ghz Core Duo, 2 gigs of RAM, and a 120 gig HD; the screen and speakers seem to be in working order. The keyboard does not seem to work properly anymore, I have tried cleaning it out thoroughly but it seems to have crapped out over the years. I would like to convert this machine into a linux box and have a few questions about the process: Should I just use Bootcamp? I took anything of value off the HD long ago, so I could just partition Mac OS into a little closet... Am I able to boot from a USB Drive? I've tried searching for it but all my results talk about using it to boot with OS X or using a CD Will I have difficulties using a USB keyboard during installation due to lack of drivers? I have a mechanical keyboard i can hook up for the process if needed What would be a good Distro for this process? My one IRL Linux friend always says Arch, period. I liked the idea of Debian as its what Steam OS is based on, and was going to use Mint's Debian version until this weekends events. Is Manjaro a good compromise between ease of use of Mint and the control/freedom of Arch? My gut, peers, and research say I don't want an Ubuntu based distro.

source: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=steamos-22-gpus&num=1 now, the results note: to be very clear, they tested only with proprietary drivers: Catalyst 15.9 and NVIDIA 352.30 --- the conclusion is this: AMD still has a lot of work when it comes to Linux drivers and looks like they are completely unprepared or outright ignoring SteamOS launch how exactly things will turn out with Vulkan is still unknown, although intel made a pretty impressive demonstration: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/440149-intel-shows-glnext-vulkan-at-siggraph-2015/ in AMD's court, things are murky: especially with them cutting jobs from IT department: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/459883-more-bad-news-for-amd-theyll-cut-5-workforce/ as or right now, if you plan to buy or just build your own STEAM Machine running SteamOS, just stick with nVidia

Hellloooooo guys, i am the French guy I got something interesting to do As you may notice my english is not really good, i hope it will be enough understandable. So here is the thing : I have Servers and external storage. Servers have proxmox as OS (debian based). Fiber cables and FC swiths to put all together. Once everything is pluged : it works ! I can see my volume "sda" with the command lsblk on the proxmox server and mount it in a directory, great but because of my physical configuration with fibre channel (we call that a "fabric" i think) the volume don't appear 1 time, i see it 4 times: sda sdb sdc and sdd these volumes are exaclty the same, there is just 4 physical path to reach them If i mount sda volume in a directory ex:/data It will work, i can use my external storage without any problem. But i want now to use the others volumes sdb sdc sdd for redundancy. I want to sdb being auto mounted when there is no more link between the server and sda should i apt-get something to setup a system like that ? Or should i write a script that auto mount sdb in /data when the link to sda is broke ? i hope that's clear enough =) thank you for reading.

I am trying to set up a virtual machine on a Dell Vostro 3560, using an activated version of Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit (SP1), but it will not pick up any updates. I am running the machine using 2/4 cores and providing 4GB/8GB for memory. I am also using the bridged adapter setting, to place the VM on my physical LAN. However, when I try to update, my VM will never find the updates, but search for them, without failing, for hours until stopped. My Windows tower is finding windows 10 updates just fine however. I am using the wireless card to connect the Host to my network. Perhaps someone here may be able to shed some light on the issue? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hey guys & girls! Albeit being all excited about my latest shiny addition to my rig, I am confused about a recent change in my boot time. Time to get "techy". My latest addition were a 250GB Samsung 850 Evo and a 3TB WD Green, resulting in the following hard drive config: 120GB Kingston Now V300 Debian/GRUB/Boot 250GB Samsung 850 Evo Windows 7 Ultimate 3TB WD Green HDD (5400rpm) 2TB Toshiba HDD (7200rpm) 500GB Maxtor HDD (7200 I think) Everything works perfectly fine except a highly increased Windows boot time. Before installing the WD Green I was running on both SSDs and the Toshiba drive Windows boot (at least the time the flag shows up) was about 5-10 seconds, now it takes around a minute! I already googled a lot but couldn't find anything helpful. I'm 99% sure it has something to do with the Windows configuration, since Debian boots swiftly as usual. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Chris

So I want to know which distro of Linux will give me the best performance without taking a huge hit on feature. I liked the speed and features of Kubuntu, but wanted to know what you guys think. Are there way better alternatives? thanks!

Heya, I want to know if it's safe to delete the "system reserved" partition from my NTFS storage drive that I use in my Debian desktop. The drive was previously used as the storage drive for my windows 7 install which is where it's gotten the "system reserved" partition from but now that I no longer use windows on this computer is cool to just delete that partition? Also, would doing so remove the windows boot entry in the grub menu at start up? Everything in me says it'd be fine but I don't want to fk anything up, so ye.
