So my friend asked me to help build him a computer, and I am stuck on which CPU to pick. He wanted a smaller build that would last him for a long time, and that is it upgradable. I chose micro ATX because of the 2 pcie 16x ports (both size and upgradablity). I am stuck on which CPU to pick. At the moment, I have chosen a xeon E3-1230 V2, because it is very powerful and has hyper threading, which may be useful in the future (it is basically a cheap i7 with no hd graphics). The other Cpus i am looking at are the very popular i5 3570k and the new 4670k, because they are unlocked and will allow for overclocking. The real question is whether a more powerful card will last longer or a card that can be overclocked? I don't mean burn out/break, but be relevent for gaming/browsing. Also, suggestions on good mobos would be helpful, I have heard something about power delivery causing overclocks to not work as well or something like that... Current Build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1bWed Any advice on anything is appreciated, this is technically my first build.

Greetings All! Because I am still a n00b of sorts at hardware I thought that I should turn to the ever so popular LTT forum for some guidance. I am trying to build an all around system of epicosity. My price range is $1000CAD or About $950USD or About €740EUR or About $1050AUD. This price range is for what I expect to pay for the base components that I still need. Therefor this price range does not include aftermarket cooling, sound card, montiors and other various peripherals. Note that this means that this price range is flexible as I do have to save up for a lot of these parts that I still need (Being a teenager with no money). I currently have the following parts: - Corsair Vengeance C70 Gunmetal Black Case (http://goo.gl/bb3ei) - Corsair CX750M 750W Power Supply (http://goo.gl/3GJc0) - Samsung 840 Series 120GB SSD (http://goo.gl/fDu0k) - Intel 520 Series 180GB SSD (Won courtesy of Lamarr Wilson (http://youtube.com/LamarrWilson)) (http://goo.gl/mhdYQ) - Seagate Barracuda 2000GB HDD (http://goo.gl/iFJZ3) So for me that leaves: - CPU - Motherboard - GPU - Memory So this is what I have come to you all for. What kind of CPU, Mobo, GPU, and RAM is best for my needs? CPU: For this build I want it to be an Intel system. Preferably a Haswell system. I will be doing some gaming (listed below) and possibly in the future video editing (Of what load, I do not know). I will be doing an overclock, just not when I get the system as my budget will periodically increase. I do want to liquid cool it with a H100i, when I can afford it. So will I benefit from a 4770K or would a 4670K be enough? Motherboard: Straight off the bat Z87 is a must as I want to overclock! Thanks to another awesome forum (tonymacx86.com) anyone can run Mac OS X on their "compatible" computer. So with this compatibility I would like to turn to Gigabyte's 8-Series motherboards. I am turning towards a Z87X-UD3H for it's great features, affordable price range, and hypothetical compatibility with OS X. For more information on Haswell and OS X see tonymac's Haswell Early Adopters Guide. It will also be a Dual-Boot with Windows. If there is any other motherboard that would work with OS X and is the Z87 chipset, feel free to send it my way! GPU: To start things off I am on the Green Team. I will be playing such games as Crysis 3, Minecraft, BioShock Infinite, Far Cry 3, FC3: Blood Dragon, Battlefield 3, Metro Last Light, Sleeping Dogs, GTA IV, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire. You know a mix of everything. The two GPU's that I would lean towards are the GTX 760 or GTX 770. If I see any major improvement with the 770 over the 760 I'll buy it. I will be using "Shadow Play" when it is released, as I will be running my future gaming channel with it (Hence the possible video editing). Any suggestions on which of the two I should buy as well as which aftermarket design (Or is reference is just as good), as well as comparisons between the two is greatly appreciated. RAM: In terms of memory I already have a set of DIMM's picked out. They're the Corsair Vengeance Pro kit. It's a 1600MHz set of 2x8GB for 16GB. They have a Cas Latency of 9. There timings are 9-9-9-24. I'm not very clear on memory overclocking (Maybe I should suggest a Tech Quickie on it), but any tips on it are appreciated. Would I benefit from the overclocked memory? I'll buy 1866MHz or 2133MHz or whatever if I'll get a benefit out of it. Anyways that's about it for what I want my build to be like. Again any suggestions, tips or any aid related to this topic is great appreciated. Thanks again everyone and thanks to Linus and Slick for creating such an awesome forum! LinusTechTips and Linus Media Group FTW!!!

Hey! Me and my friend have been trying solve the problems that started after his hardware upgrade. Specs after upgrade: Asus Z87-K Intel Core i5 4670K Corsair Dominator 1600MHz 4x2GB Gigabyte Geforce GTX570 Samsung 2TB 5400rpm Samsung 750GB 7200rpm Corsair TX 650W His perspective: "The other day I decided that I should upgrade my computer, by getting an Asus Z87-K and a 4670K (I had an Asus M4A79XTD EVO and an AMD Phenom X4 965). Little did I know that it would be one of the biggest mistakes I've made when it comes to my computer. Since I replaced my old motherboard and CPU, I have reinstalled my windows 8, and then it began. Random crashes/restarts, without any crashreports according to WhoCrashed." I'll take it all in order of events. Replace the components - no issues installing them. Fresh re-install of windows 8 - still no problem. Crashed at desktop - assumed it was just Windows 8 being Windows 8. Try to play Arma 3 Beta - worked fine the first time, but closed it after a few minutes. The second time however, it crashed and rebooted(no bluscreen) Removed a stick of RAM - I removed it because of my H60 tubing was pressing slightly on one of the memory heatspreaders. Just screwing around on the internet for a few hours - it worked just fine. Started arma 3 - crashed and rebooted(no bluescreen). Stress test the RAM with memtest - 2x2GB, different 2x2GB, 4x2GB - no issues. Stress test CPU, GPU, RAM - no problems there. Random Crash - when i was running Razer Comms, wich seems quite odd. Reinstall windows 8 Install all the drivers( chipset, GPU etc.) I change the setting so it doesn't restart immediately when crashing Stress test CPU, GPU, RAM - no crash or BSOD. Arma 3 Beta - Crasched after just a few minutes. Windows update - BSOD - WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR Google tells me it might be a failing HDD HDD test - 1 warning on my primary drive(750GB) Started to split the 2TB HDD into to partitions. Left it running for about 8 hours - no crash Removed the damaged HDD Install Windows 8 on the 2TB HDD Still crashing - starting to lose my mind Install Windows 7 - shouldn't be as crappy as Win 8, right? Stress test - Everything looks great Arma 3 Beta - crasch after aproximately 20 minutes. Blur - no crash, ~2h Stress test - HDD(CrystaldiskMark), RAM(~90% used with Prime95), CPU(100% load with Prime95), GPU(100% load with MSI Kombustor) - no crash Arma 3 Beta- crashed after about 30min I'm assuming Arma 3 has a part of the system crashing but that doesn't explain the crashes while idle/youtube/forums. If it's the temps or some malfunction that causes crashes under heavy load it should have crashed during the stress tests. A friend of mine bought another 4670K and an Asus Z87-K(from the same retailer), he re-installed Windows 8 and has had no problems since. Any advise or help of any kind is highly appreciated. Or my friend might severly hurt himself or someone else.

I am currently buying parts for my PC and I can't decide on the CPU. My choices are 4670K and 8350, can anyone help me?

Which one would be a better choice for gaming and future proofing your build, AMD FX 8350 or Intel 4670k? LGA1150 motherboards are much newer and with better features and the Haswell chips are new atleast, but AMD has an 8-core processor which could be better since games are starting to favor multiple cores/threads, and it's a bit cheaper. Please advice, this has been bothering me a while now.

Part 1 - Planning Intro You may want to take a look at the parts list before reading After seeing this build, I would like to try my hand at something similar, but using the new Haswell CPU's that have come out instead. My main concern is obviously spacing, but if I can get my hands on the SilverStone Strider Short Cable Kit, I may be O.K. After comparing the ASRock z77e-ITX used in the build above, with the GA-Z87N-WIFI, I have only noticed these changes: -24 pin connector is at the top of the motheboard instead of on the right -Ram and CPU have been moved slightly to the right I don't see any of those causing issues if I only use 1 of the HDD mounts, but if you want to see the differences in the boards for yourself, open the photoshop file below and toggle the GA-Z87N-WIFI layer. (You may need to download it and open with Photoshop) Node 304 Planning - 1.psd (3.64MB) Parts list Case: Node 304 PSU: Silverstone Strider ST65F-G + Silverstone PP05 Short Cable Kit MB: GA-Z87N-WIFI CPU: Intel 4670k + Corsair Hydro H90 (140mm liquid cooler) RAM: G.Skill NT DDR3 PC10600/1333MHz CL9 2x8GB GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 680 *I have left prices off as I am in New Zealand, for anyone wanting to see NZ prices and stores, check out my PriceSpy list here: http://pricespy.co.nz/list.php?l=89685&view=m

So currently I have the choice between the i5 4670k and the i7 3770k and I'm not sure which one to get. I want to be able to play battlefield 4 and possibly upload videos of it. Would a 3770k with hyperthreading provide a significant improvement in video uploading? I know that the 4670k is better core for core, but i'm also worried that future games might utilize hyperthreading more and my 4670k will be left in the dust. I would like to know what other people would personally chose for their own builds. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Choice between 8350, 4670K, E3 1230 V3
TeamTactical posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Making a new computer for my dad, he will mostly be using it for light web browsing, watching occasional movies etc However he also recently bought a GoPro and is planning on taking 1080p video and editing it, so he's wanting decent CPU performance. My three options I'm seriously considering are: AMD FX 8350 for $230 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=187_1512&products_id=21806 Because of 8 physical cores at a very affordable price i5 4670K for $270 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=187_1490&products_id=23495 Due to the good overall performance and overclocking ability Xeon E3 1230 V3 for $300 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=187_1490&products_id=23861 Due to the near-i7 performance and hyperthreading. For those interested in the rest of the build, the other components are going to be these parts or approximations of these. ASRock H87 Performance Mobo $125.00 F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 8GB RAM $99.00 Antec 620W Modular HCG-620M $115.00 60GB SSD $75 Seagate 3TB ST3000DM001 $142.00 And my used GTX 560ti Which CPU of the three would you consider to be the best value? I believe my dad would want this computer to last quite a while which is why I'm considering the unlocked i5, but it won't be overclocked straight away. I'm mostly thinking can I get away with the 8350, is it an appropriate CPU considering the rest of the build? The computer isn't focused on gaming, just on light use and occasional but hefty video editing. Edit: Just a quick note, I don't really mind at the moment about the lack of onboard graphics built into the Xeon, as the computer will be coming with a decent discrete graphics card. Just wanted to point that out. He isn't a power-user so isn't crazily interested in "DEM GIGAHERTZ" But he is looking for a decent machine that won't break the bank too much. -
Need help bringing total price down by $100

This is going to be my first ever build, so I need to get an oem disc of windows and a fairly nice monitor. I am going to be using the build for photo editing in lightroom and photoshop. I also intend on play some games such as minecraft, bf3, skyrim, gta4, tomb raider, and arma 3. Due to the sad placement of my room, my router and modem are placed on the other side of the house and is why I need to get a WiFi dongle. I am planning on overclocking my CPU while maintaining a quiet system, so that is why I went with the xigmatek dark night cooler. My budget is $1,500, but with the current state that my shopping cart is at right now, the total w/tax & shipping comes out to be $1,600. I need help from people who are experienced to help me decide where I can cut back and save some money.
