Hi. I just upgraded my rig and i'm at my last component( beeing a GPU) / maybe 2 in couple months. Specs: I7 4790k asus z97 - pro gamer 16gb ram 1866 500w psu (bronze cert) msi 270x 250 gb SSD I am playing on 1080p . not more not less I would actually love to max most of the games... because i hate not to be able to... So i was thinking if i should get a msi gtx 970/strix or a 290. I already did some of the research and GTX 970 seems to win all the benchmarks. Can you give me a tip? Should i get 970 (which one - i live in Romania so not all of them are available) or another GPU.

Hi guys, Lately in GTA V I've been getting lower FPS than what I should be expecting. I run the game on mostly high and very high (which is what the game set for me on first launch) and I get anywhere between 30-80fps with an average of around 45 fps. This is strange because my specs are at at least equal to the recommended -- if not better. What I've tried so far is first downloading the beta 15.4 drivers from AMD which didn't change anything. I then tried turning down the settings: no matter if I changed everything to the lowest settings or changed the resolution down from 1080p my fps would not change. I'm lost now. My questions are what FPS do you think I should expect? Am I over-estimating my PC? If I'm not, what can I do about this if anything? Could it potentially be an optimisation issue? My specs: i7 3770k @ 3.50ghz stock 8GB ram MSI r9 290x Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hey guys, I'm having R9 290x connected to Yamaha RX v377 reciever via HDMI. It supports dolby true HD, DTS, etc. When I'm playing blu ray movie with MPC player with LAV audio decoder , I'm experiencing choppy playback. For few seconds audio plays fine, then no sound for fraction of a second and then audio plays fine, again no sound for fraction of a second.... so on. Is there any fix for this?? I tried ffdshow, it doesn't play dolby true HD

whats better , a gtx 970 or the r9 290x. both gigabyte options, price is almost the same at my country. i was sure i was choosing the 970 until i heard about its problems with only 3.5 gb ddr5. r these problems true? if not i already chose the 970 but if true i might have to reconsider. so, whats better?

Which one? I"ll currently use a 1080p monitor, I may move up to 1440p later. Are they equal in performance? I hear people say the 970 is better for 1080p, and I also hear that the 290x is better all around, so confused. It kinda makes me feel like people don't know what they are talking about, how can you have it both ways? If someone was offering a free MSI R9 290X Lightning or a GTX 970 G1 Gaming, which would you choose?

Hello My current GPU is a Gainward GTX670 and games such as Battlefield 4 and Star Citizen bring it to it's knees. So, I'm looking for an upgrade. Cards in and around my budget at my local PC shop are. A MSI R9 290X An Asus GTX960 Or various brand GTX970's Any advice is greatly appreciated

At high resolutions(1440p and 4k) which configuration is better? A 970 sli or 290x crossfire? I plan on buying 1 970 or 290x and then buy another 1 in the near future(5-6 months). I will choose depending on which one has better multi card config (sli or crossfire). Performance is number 1 priority, power consumption 2,silence 3, cooling 4.there price is pretty much the same. I wanna know which configuration performs better at 4k specifically.

Hi, I'm looking to make a couple of upgrades over the next couple of months (or possibly half year depending on what the result is...). Currently, I have an XFX R9 270 in my system. Can't remember exact specs as I didn't buy it exclusively - it was included in a build I got. Since receiving the build I've got more into tinkering with computers (previously I'd only worked on laptops) and I've built a computer for a friend. So I'm confident in making a few upgrades to my system. Basically, the 270 is fine, I'd even go as far as to say good, but then it is the best graphics card I've used to date...... The problem is, it's driving a 1440p monitor. Brilliant for all of my desktop stuff that I do and photo editing, but when it comes to games (as I'm sure most of you will know) anything that's fairly graphically demanding has to be scaled down. It's also not the quietest of cards; very audible after about 60C. So, I'm after a new card that will play my games well enough (I'd settle for one level below "absolute maximum" in the graphics list on top games) at 1440p, but here's what (maybe?) makes this post a little different - I would like the card to be Hackintosh compatible. My 270 can work, but it's not the best and as result I've currently got rid of my Mac partition until I can come back at it a bit better equipped. I know that as a general rule AMD cards aren't the best for this, but I have seen some posts of people getting them to work and the price point makes the 290(X)'s incredibly attractive. If I were to go this route I would most likely go for a Sapphire Vapor-X (although I'm still undecided on 290 or 290X). Now on to nVidia, they have a higher success rate in Hackintoshes, but they also come with a higher price tag... I had originally thought of the 970, but after the recent news I don't know whether I should be put off or not, considering I have a 1440p display. I also have no idea which vendor to go for - EVGA look pretty trusted, but I really have no idea... As a general guide, here are some games that would be running (and would like to run) on the system: - Assassin's Creed series, including Unity - Bioshock series - Total War Rome II - Grand Theft Auto series (including 5 when it comes out) ...and a future game - Star Wars Battlefront 3 (obviously, no legitimate speculations can be made for this, but as it's a Dice game, I'm assuming it'll be similarly specced to Battlefield 4). Remember, all at 1440p...... Chances are, I'll need to make a PSU upgrade too, no matter what I go for. Currently I just have a 600W PSU. I can't remember what it is, but I'm fairly sure it's Gold rated and it's non-modular. I'm sure it's nothing fancy... I've seen Corsair PSUs, so I'd be inclined to get one of those (although I wouldn't know what wattage to go for), but if anyone has other suggestions and arguments on PSUs then I'm all ears. Just as a heads up, the rest of my system is as follows: - i7 4790k (currently at stock speeds) - 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400MHz - Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 - 2x SSDs - 3x Mechanical HDDs - 1x Optical DVD reader/burner - 2x 140mm Noctua fans (cpu) - 2x Corsair case fans (included with case) Sorry for such a long post! Any help at all will be MUCH appreciated, Thanks!

"4K UHD Surrond" is a complicated subject and like Linus said 4K surrond "would have to be forged in the fires of mount doom!" (or something). But i think that is this coulkd work this could be a very interesting project some people could do. Key Components: AMD FirePro 16GB (Display Vram) Triple GTX 980s OC | Triple R9 290x (8GB) OC (Horsepower) Intel i7 5960X OC Liquid Cooling Corsair AX1500i | EVGA 1600W 80+ Platinum Fully-Modular So although this isn't very practical (but expensive), I want your opinions on if this could be a light into 4K Surrond! Hope you think this is cool MRE P.S. This is just an idea, I'm not crazy enough to do this!

So basically I want to buy a 290, but I can't decide between a slightly cheaper Asus 290 or a much nicer but more expensive XFX DD 290.. I've heard some really bad things about XFX cards (and PSUs) dying prematurely.

Hi guys, I'm currently helping a friend plan a rig and due to it being discounted we have decided to get the MSI R9 290X Lightning. However due to the unique nature of this particular card of needing 2 x 8pin PCIE + 1 x 6pin PCIE for power I'm currently unsure of two things. 1) does the chosen PSU, a Seasonic G series 750W PSU, have enough connectors for this card? Preferably not daisy chained? I've been scouring the web for confirmation it has enough but it's always inconclusive. the Box and website states 6 x 8/6pin PCIE connectors but I'm unsure whether they're daisy chained or molex converters 2) Is this power supply actually enough to drive this card? It fits the recommended power supply as stated on MSI website...I can;t help be a tad paranoid tho esp since it has so many power connectors (I know it's no 295X2 but still ; any other recommended PSU? I ahve seen on other local forums about Superflower and FSP but the only one I have experience and trust most is seasonic. P.s. I'm from singapore btw if that helps.

Hey I dont have screen caps at the moment, I will get them if required. Just thought I would get that out of the way off the bat. Well I was really excited to get my Powercolor 290x2 in the mail from Overclockers UK (its refurbished but does work properly) but I initially was plaugued with problems, ranging from no display at all to 4K video stutter on Youtube. But Crossfire in some cases either refuses to work even when it says it is in Afterburner (BF4 and Grid Autosport I'm looking at you). I dont mind ZeroCore being enabled when I'm web browsing. But why doesn't 4K video work in YouTube anymore? I have a R9 290 which had no issues at all with it. I brought up the Chrome Debug FPS display and is running at about 15fps but 1440p video works flawlessly at YouTubes 30fps cap I did notice almost 100% CPU usage with 4k enabled, but so did the single r9 290? it is about 60% with 1440p video. I have a pretty crap PSU. So i am getting a PC in two weeks and i am finalising it now but i am not sure which GPU to buy. i am currently looking to max games at 1080p for recent games and a fair few in the future. I am looking at the 290X, the 290 and the 970. I am not really seeing a reason for the 290x due to the similar performance to 970 at 1080p but at a hotter temp and more power consumption, but i thought it was a good idea to put out there. 290X - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-912v308001 290 - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-912v308002 970 - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-gtx970gaming4g i am not set on buying an MSI card, they just match the colour theme i have of red and black in my build (no gpu yet) --> http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/gFkZvK I would prefer not to spend any more than the MSI 970 @ $525 AUD. i have looked at benchmarks and was just wondering if there would be a bad performance difference at 1080p between the 970 and others. the only reason im really considering this is because if i dont need to spend an additional $100 why should i? thanks

Hello all, As much as it pains me to start a topic, I need some advice. I have been looking to upgrade from my old GPU (660), to a r9 290/x. The plan is to water cool it. I have found a very interesting deal on a 290x (175 GBP, 230 Euro, 262 USD) on eBay, the seller has a good reputation and claims the card is unused. However AMD cards did go through a mining phase, which makes me hesitant as to its origins and use history, has to been damaged, etc etc (And also eBay just being eBay) What are your thoughts, worth going for it? too risky? Is it worth waiting for the 3xx series and hope for a price drop on retail sales of the 290x? Thanks in advance guys, Nup.

I have been looking into upgrading my graphics card, and have been considering either the 290x or 980. Currently I have a Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edition card. If I can get the MSI R9 290x Lightning Edition for around $350, is there that much of a performance gain to go with the 980, which I have found for $480? I'm no sure if the increase in performance is worth the extra $150?

Hi guys. Title sums it up all quite nicely. I'm doing a little bit of case modding along building a new comp (both which I've never done). All I'm missing is the GPU now. Specs: z97-a motherboard i5-4690k cpu + tx3 evo cooler 10gb ddr3 ram The case itself is a regular atx metal case as the base. I've removed the top and pieces from the front (leaving the driver+hdd racks? in place). The sides are gona be wood panel and top+front are going to be filter + mesh (so its a pretty breathing thing) This is not assembled yet but just to give you an image what it's going to be looking like.(missing that mesh) picture link http://i.imgur.com/qdZUQY0.jpg I live in finland eu (hence the prices) and I've rounded up my selection to these. (I've considered geting it out of the country but shipping for 1 part+ possible hassle with warranty not worth the 10-20€ save) TL;DR Which GPU would you pick? Considering these things: -Need to save money for upcoming baby (would prefer 200-250€ but already put aside/expecting ~350€) -Noise, pretty open case -Heat, wood on case -Performance -Single 1080 monitor, possibly geting a 2nd monitor in the future GTX 970 new - 339€ (inno3D herculez x2) 0€ shipping Used - 290€ (gigabyte, no info if still has warranty, what version ect. seller very slow to respond) friend can pick this up/possible shipping R9 290x Used/opened package 250€ - from a local store. 12months warranty, emailed me that it's this version (without the game)? this is the reference version?? http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/radeon-r9-290x-battlefield-4-limited-edition.html Used ~200€ - xfx, claimed to be mining 24/7 for almost a year + other similar cards with no info if they've been used to mine coins. All have warranty tho 1-2 years R9 280x Used 160-180€ - xfx mostly, different sellers/shops. Most have warranty 1-2 years GTX 960? Waiting for this anyway, I think it's going to affect prices for new AND used ones. Not sure how it will stackup against these but we'll see. why no gtx 760-770-780(TI) They don't really sell new ones anymore. I've found 760 new for 240€ Used 760-780TI 300-500€ - Might have warranty but don't think I'm going to pay that much for an used one. I'm pretty interested on that 290x but really worried about heat/noise since heard/read bad things about the reference card. Second choise would be that inno3d gtx 970. LMK your opinion on this!

Throw at me all the things! All the benchmarks! All the scores! Cause I a nt find any one comparing in the same graph. So I am at the point in my build where I am just about dome and ready to start building but just want to check my graphics card is decent before I waste £180 on one. So my budget is £190 for my GPU, with my overall build being £550 and it is here: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/R4R6P6 (pretty sweet, am I right?) And I am curious now as to whether the GTX 760 or the R9 280x can deliver better performance as they're basically the same price (if not the 760 is about £20 cheaper which could go into an SSD). I will be using it for gaming at ultra settings at 1080p (BF4/GMOD/CS:GO/MC/TF2) as well as 3D modelling/animation using Autodesk maya/CAD/Professional 2015, blender and 3DS max. I will also be doing some amateur video editing to try it out. Thanks for the help!

Hello everyone, I got myself a new BenQ GW2765 2k screen for christmas and tried adding it to my already existing tri monitor setup with it as my new main screen. It worked pretty fine until I noticed that when I run games it seems to have a stutter every few seconds, as if it wasn't refreshing at the right rate it should. I tried running it without audio devices to see if it was an audio problem but nothing changed. While using only three monitors, including the new one as a main it runs perfectly fine and so I'm quite startled. I tried booting with only the new monitor connected and the connecting the other ones one by one, and it worked sometimes but sometimes it didn't. I'm quite confused to be honest and would like some help. Framerates are stable and way above refresh rate if uncapped, even during the stuttering there are no Framedrops. All monitors are running at 60Hz and 1920x1080 except the new BenQ which is running at 2560x1440. I tried switching it to 1080p but it didn't resolve the problem either. My CPU is an I7 2600k at 4,6 GHz and my GPU is an 290x XFC with 2 x DVI, 1 x HDMI and 1 x Displayport. Monitors are all connected nativly without converters except one DVI to HDMI cable, which shouldn't be the issue, the Displayport one being the BenQ. Thanks for the help.

Hello to everyone at the Linus Tech Tips forums, this is my first time posting here but I have been watching the Linus videos on YouTube for a while now and this is a community that I trust. In a nutshell, this computer isn't getting the FPS that I think it should be, primarily on Battlefild 4. It was also getting low FPS in League Of Legends (around 30-40 FPS) but that seems to have been rectafied with a BIOS (UEFI) update. The low and inconsistant FPS in Battlefield remains although it seems to have gotten marginally better, but that could just be placebo. League of Legends seems to loading a bit slower than it should be as well, although Battlefield seems to be loading as it should. So far I have updated to the latest VGA drivers (14.12) - http://tinyurl.com/lkxd52r and the latest chipset drivers (They seemed to be a lot newer on the AMD website than compared to the ones on the manufacturer's website.) - http://tinyurl.com/lwaooto I have also updated the BIOS to the latest version from the ASRock website (Version 2.70) - http://tinyurl.com/ky4vds5 Another thing that I have done is to ensure that the GPU isn't thermal throttling. The case is large enough with adequate enough airflow for this configuration. I haven't tried formatting the machine yet. The computer's specs are as follows; Motherboard - ASRock 990FX Extreme 4 - http://tinyurl.com/6rr6gkr CPU - AMD FX-8150, Eight Core, 3.6GHz (Not overclocked) - http://tinyurl.com/k8od4hg GPU - AMD R9 290X, 4GB VRAM, Referance design card (Unsure of the manufacturer as the computer is owned by a friend of mine. I think it is an XFX card.) - http://tinyurl.com/kmfcxq7 RAM - Corshair Dominator Platinum, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24 Timings, 1.5V, 2 x 4GB Sticks (ver:2.12) - http://tinyurl.com/o4n4wjs PSU - EVGA Supernova NEX750G, 750W, Fully Modular - http://tinyurl.com/ow2me9v HDD - 1x ADATA Premier Pro SP900 SSD, 120GB (Boot drive where both Battlefield and LoL is stored) - http://tinyurl.com/mhjbtv5 HDD 2 - 1x Seagate Barracuda 1TB Mechanical HDD, ST1000DM003-9YN162 - (can't find a resource for this drive) CPU Cooler - Antec Kühler h₂o 920 - http://tinyurl.com/ofgpos6 OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit If any more information about the system is required, let me know and I will provide it. One of the things I am after is a way of quantifying the gaming performance of the computer, I.E. some kind of benchmarking software. This will enable me to have a consistant test for any changes that have been made and will hopefully provide a point of reference for the computer as it is now. It will also provide a comparrison for how this system should be running. Please feel free to let me know about any other information you require or any benchmarking results that would be helpfull. Thanks in advance, Dave

Hey guys, just about to upgrade my computer and I am having a hard time to choose GPU. The parts that I am upgrading at the current time would be PSU, CPU and GPU. Upgrading my mobo feels like a waste of money atm because the limitation is pretty tight, but anyways, for my CPU I was thinking the AMD FX-8350, haven't decided PSU yet since I still have not chosen the GPU, hoping to stay around 100$ on that too. Biggest question is, how does an AMD CPU co-operate with a NVIDIA GPU? Is it even relevant? And what would be the GPU of choice for 400$? Please share your thoughts with me, if you have any.
