  1. I suppose I misunderstood coil whine and confused it with shitty fans. This is exactly what I'm getting. I'll get in touch with EVGA and see what my options are. It isn't bothersome when i'm using headphones, but if it picks up and finds its way into my mic when I'm recording, THAT is when i'm going to have major issues with it outside of the annoyance.
  2. Edit: I seem to have confused coil whine with shitty fans. Thanks for the tip. It is definately coil whine, and I've contacted EVGA about the issue. Hopefully things go well. I have an EVGA reference 980, obviously its pretty new as they were just released. I bought it from Microcenter the day they became available, and am out of the 30 day return period. Being the genius that I am, I passed on the extended warranty. Maybe I'm mistaken and can actually exchange it, please correct me if that is the case. So all that aside, my current situation: My video card has a weird "whine" sound to it, but I really don't think it's coil whine as it doesn't ramp up with the fan, it's immediate and generally high pitched. It is very minimal and nearly unnoticeable during normal desktop use, such as web browsing, and luckily it remains minimal and nearly unnoticeable when I do audio work or any recording, though any sound at all is unacceptable as I built the machine to be as close to silent as possible. While on the desktop, though hard to hear, it fluctuates between a few pitches. Yes I have good airflow and all other parts perform as expected. Fans are on highest RPM they can go without being audible. It only happens when certain unknown criteria are met, and its been fairly consistent with when it happens. Most noticeably when i'm playing Minecraft, and when i'm playing WoW. In MC it happens when I look down at all, and the farther down I look the louder it gets. In WoW, its loudest at the character selection screen, and oddly enough, it changes pitch and volume as I switch which character is selected. It doesn't happen often while playing, but it does get louder as I look higher or lower. Strangely in both games it is much quieter when i look straight ahead towards the horizon. Like i said before, it is consistent and always goes to the same pitch and volume for each character and looking around always yields the same results. I'm stuck and can't find any info about a situation like this. If relevent, other parts are: 5930K + Corsair H110 Asus x99 Deluxe 16 (4x4) Gb Crucial 2133 Workstation DDR4 RAM Corsair 840 Evo 1Tb Corsair HX850i
  3. I find this odd. There is a Redbox (or two) at every local grocery store here and even some of the fast food places, and I'm usually waiting in line to use them, and quite often what i'm looking for is sold out. physical redbox booths though, not online. I didn't even know there was a redbox online other than to find out the locations and whats in stock nearby..
  4. YES! I just got my x99 mobo yesterday.
  5. what are the chances that the next gen of -e processors will stay on the 2011-3 socket?
  6. Silly AMD. Finally coming out with a 380! Nvidia is WAY ahead, already on the 980! AMD is six generations behind.
  7. Its for a home studio. You don't build a workstation quality computer with a tight budget. Also, I don't see it any differently than when I buy new instruments. No matter how good my microphones and mixing are, I'm not going to get $2000 violin sound out of a $70 violin. Does computer hardware effect sound? no, but reliability and not-having-to-upgrade-or-replace-parts definately makes up for the premium of getting higher quality items. an investment. I could just as easily go 1150 socket on a z97 mobo and be overkill for my audio work, but I am going for more than 4 cores since I also do graphic design and video editing/rendering.
  8. Are you serious?! thats amazeballs. nevermind then. ordering tonight before it goes out of stock again.
  9. Currently the x99 WS motherboard is a NeweggBusiness exclusive (thanks to the guy who pointed that out to me a while ago when I couldn't find it.) Well, unfortunately for me my little home studio doesn't quite qualify as a business, and I have a fear that I won't be able to get my hands on one of these mobo's, unless it becomes generally available to everyone at some point. So anyway, for a (purple and black themed) workstation build (with a touch of gaming on the side) what is a good alternative to the WS motherboard that will give me solid reliable constant awesomeness on the x99 platform? I'll be using it for constant Audio editing, a decent amount of graphic design and some video editing, and it will also double as my home server for my family, so enough SATA ports for a large amount of storage for tons of movies and music. I'm looking to have the build complete by the end of November at the very latest.
  10. I have a feeling that G-sync (on the monitor's end) won't ever work on an AMD GPU, but Nvidia will find away to make their GPUs run G-sync on both G-sync and free sync monitors.
  11. so does this mean anyone who recently bought a 980 can apply for a step up and upgrade as soon as its released?
  12. umm.. did you look at ANY reviews? Across the board, the 980 beats the 780ti. in some cases, marginally, others its a tie within margin of error, but overall, the 980 is a better performing card. The 980 also uses pretty much everything on the card, the only improvements they can really make are variants with extra VRAM, which ironically 4 now "isn't enough" after months and months of "3gb is way more than necessary"
  13. Also consider that not everyone has a window in their case, and the aesthetics of the inside of their case are irrelevant. Individual parts don't need to cost more to look sexy if you never see them.
  14. I've already got my HDD situation figured out, so now I'm stuck on SSD options. I plan on doing two drives in RAID 0 since I prefer one larger drive for all my software, games included, and there aren't many options for large SSDs. I understand that RAID 0 isn't perfectly stable, but thats okay because none of my files will be saved to it, only software that I can easily put back on in a timely matter should any issue arise. I also have never had an issue with a RAID drive before, though I do accept that the possibility is there. Right now I've got two Intel 730 480Gb SSDs written down on my list, but I don't know much of the difference between different brands and their individual technologies. I had originally planned a single Samsung 840 EVO 1Tb, or two 500Gb in RAID 0. I had a good experience with the 840 EVOs before using a 240Gb OS drive, but since there is news of that being a bad idea I kinda leaned away from that and the Intel option seemed to fill the gap. Anyway, in a hobby/pre-professional workstation environment, if you were offered two SSDs of your choice for free, which would you choose and why? more space preferred, I've got a lot of software to put on them.
  15. Corehound MOUNT?! I'm so glad I'm reactivating soon. I play pretty heavily when the new expansion comes out, and again when a new Arena season starts, but towards the end of the expansion when I've pretty much done everything I wanted to, I let my sub slip and I work on other things.
  16. Well, considering that he's going for the x99 platform, DDR4 is his only option. Also considering that DDR3 is ridiculously expensive and DDR4 is about the same in price, I'd say DDR4 is better value than DDR3.
  17. They were mostly multiple choice, many of which were trick questions containing partially correct answers. One of which was about CUDA technology, who uses it and what is it all about. A few months ago, I had never even heard of it. Another was about custom watercooling and the parts needed to create a minimal setup. A few months ago I had never even seen a watercooled rig, let alone knew what parts were needed for a basic one. There were a few about different operating systems and the devices that use them as well. One that I am fairly certain I did NOT get correct however was about types of lights you can use to add effect to the interior of a custom PC. Some of which I knew for sure since I had seen Linus use them in his build videos, but everything was abbreviated.. and I had no idea what the majority of abreviations meant..
  18. I just got back from an interview for a tech related job. Part of this interview consisted of a computer knowledge test. Thanks to Linus and his team, and NCIX as well (along with a few other tech youtube channels) I completely demolished this test with ease, and If I had taken that test before I discovered NCIX and LinusTechTips, I would have cried with my head between my knees at some of the questions. I'm naturally inquisitive. Knowing that something works isn't good enough for me, I want to know why and how. What is the reasoning? This spiked my interest in knowing more about computers and related technologies outside of knowing I wanted a BA computer back when I first built my own PC with the limited knowledge I had at the time. Now I still have a lot of more fine details to learn, but that comes with time and stuff. Anyway, Thanks Linus and Friends for helping me further my Nerducation, which as of earlier today has helped me in a real world situation outside of my own hobby and entertainment.
  19. Rampage 5 is $499 USD? Newegg Business shows the x99 WS board at $529 USD, and out of stock with "replenishment unconfirmed".
  20. So how does one go about getting one? I'm guessing newegg business doesn't sell to normal consumers, even for semi-professional use?
  21. Microcenter, Newegg, and Amazon still do not have this listed as available.
  22. They say its not an overclocking board.. does this mean that it won't do well overclocking, or simply that it just doesn't have all the extra fancy overclocking features that say the ROG boards have? I'd assume with good cooling you'd still be able to do at least a small OC on it..
  23. YES! so good to hear. I figured it would likely be okay, especially since the MoBo box is very roomy and strong.. but I needed a second opinion because I'd absolutely hate for $1,200+ worth of CPU parts to be broken before they get to be used. Obviously I won't sell them for that much.
  24. I'm looking to sell a 4930K, Asus Rampage 4 Black Edition, and 32Gb Corsair XMS DDR3 1333 RAM as a 3-part bundle. All brand new and unused as I have not yet finished modding the 900D that I had planned on putting them into. However, I have already placed the CPU in the socket and misplaced the box (pretty sure the Intel CPU box was thrown away in a recent move) and RAM wise the little plastic case was destroyed in the process of opening it. Anyway, I have the MoBo box and everything that came in/with it, and the CPU and RAM sitting already installed on the MoBo, safely sitting in the mobo box for the time being, I just am not sure if that is okay for transport or not. granted, people bring desktops around all the time already put together, Microcenter sends your CPU MoBo bundles home with CPU preinstalled all the time, laptops are basically portable MoBos with everything installed all the time.. Basically, is it safe to ship a CPU/RAM/MoBo together in the MoBo box with the CPU and RAM already installed? (keep in mind, the R4BE box is very sturdy and has lots of space, nothing touches any of the parts and the mobo does not move around in the box.) if not, what are other possible solutions? (side note, anyone interested in buying these please PM me, I'll likely be making a post in the classifieds section soon)
