    On AM4, it doesn't matter all that much. Most motherboards more expensive than $100 have a VRM that's plenty to keep a 12 core powered in Prime95 small FFts, so it really just comes down to what features you need and how much you want to spend. I'd recommend just getting the cheapest board that has a solid VRM and all the features you want, anything more really isn't necessary.
     
    If you don't really need any features besides some rear USB and a PCIe slot, then the B550M Steel Legend is hard to beat, it's pretty much the cheapest PCIe Gen 4 capable motherboard that I'd be willing to recommend. It doesn't have any niceties like BIOS flashback, debug LEDs, etc., but it's really cheap and performance will be the same as a $200+ motherboard. 
     
    If you want BIOS flashback and debug LEDs, the B550-A Pro is a solid option. Again, it's a more basic motherboard, but has enough features for 90% of people. 
     
    If you want a POST code, the B550 Steel Legend is the cheapest board that does, and is a really nice board for the price. The only downside is that it doesn't have BIOS flashback so if you screw up a BIOS flash you're forced to get an external BIOS flasher to attempt to recover the board, but if you aren't gonna be flashing the BIOS, the POST code is really useful for general troubleshooting and for doing certain types of overclocking (mainly memory overclocking). 
     
    If you want a fully maxed out feature set on AM4, get the B550 Taichi. It's got a POST code, BIOS flashback, rear clear CMOS, onboard power/reset/internal clear CMOS buttons (this board has 4 ways to clear the CMOS for whatever reason), x8/x8 support (for running multiple high bandwidth expansion cards), 2.5Gb LAN, 8 SATA ports that never get disabled, etc. Basically the only things you could want from this board are on board Thunderbolt (you aren't really gonna find it on anything but 1-2 niche boards) and a few more rear USB ports (7 is adequate for most people but there are boards out there with 11-12). Basically, unless there is a specific feature you know you need that this board doesn't have (say good IOMMU groups for doing PCIe passthrough, in which case you should be looking more at X570 boards with x8/x8 support like the X570 Taichi, X570 Ultra, etc.) this is the most expensive board 99% of people should actually be looking at.

    Motherboard choice generally won't affect performance in any way. It's just the connector between your other high-performance parts, and unless the connector is broken in some way, the performance will all be the same.
     
    The real reason you would spend more money on a motherboard is to get features that don't exist on lower-end motherboards (more USB ports, USB-C header, WiFi onboard, more M.2 slots, RGB, etc.), or for serious overclocking.
     
    There *is* potentially some performance to be gained by not choosing a bargain-basement motherboard, since higher-end motherboards will generally have better power-delivery (allowing the CPU to boost very slightly higher sometimes), and the trace layout might be better optimized, allowing for faster memory speeds (Anything greater than 3600Mhz I'd probably recommend a non-budget board). However, these are very small performance differences so you should really buy a motherboard for the features, not for a performance uplift.
