  1. Working on a new build for a friend and we got Windows 10 fully installed and everything seemed fine....until the system crashed. The system will start up and run for up to 10ish minutes max (sometimes much shorter) and then abruptly crash. The system will remain in this weird powered on state with the fans on the GPU spinning at high seed but nothing showing on screen until we shut the power off. I removed XMP so it wasn't that, tried older set of drivers and that didn't fix the issue. Then we took out the GPU and put it into my personal system and got identical crashes. So clearly this is something GPU related. I don't believe it's an issue of not enough power as my personal system has plenty of headroom (and his should be fine too). Is this just a case of a card being DOA? Are there any final steps I can try before contacting the manufacturer/Amazon for a return/refund/replacement? 2. I actually tried and the system crashed in the middle of doing so. I'm going to take my GPU out of my system and put it in his and see if I can at least get that much done
  3. Still no dice. I think it's the GPU after all because it crashed very fast once I opened Heaven
  4. Yes I did turn on XMP. Good thinking. I'll reset CMOS now and report back

The system will start up and run for up to 10ish minutes max (sometimes much shorter) and then abruptly crash. Part of the crash is that the fans on the GPU will ramp up to what seems like full speed after the system has crashed. The system will remain in this weird powered on state with the fans on the GPU spinning at high seed but nothing showing on screen until we shut the power off. I checked the CPU temps in HW Monitor and those all seem largely normal (40-50ish Celsius). GPU temps seem normal as well. 6. Sigh yeah I know. It is what it is though. Sometimes you just want the instant gratification (and I think non tech people don't care as much anyays). I don't think I'll be able to, but I'll try. I'll probably recommend your build to him (with the 2080S) and then show him my 144hz 1440p monitor. He should definitely upgrade monitors within 6 months.
  7. Yeah it is a bit of a waste for sure. I'll probably try to convince him to upgrade to 1440 and a higher refresh rate at some point down the line. He's already got a monitor though so just getting the high end system no and waiting a bit for a better monitor makes sense to me
  8. Good catch on the RAM! I didn't even notice he had put so much in there lol.
  9. Yeah I mean that's what I told my friend, but I think he really doesn't care and just wants the stuff now
  10. Budget (including currency): Below $1600ish Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Primarily for gaming (but some homework as well). Specifically strategy games like Total War WH2, and other AAA games Other details Going to be at 1080p 60hz. Already have all needed peripherals Here's the list my friend came up with so far. I'm not as familiar with the range of hardware that's out there right now so I figured someone else should take a look at his list and give suggestions. I told him about the new Nvidia cards coming out shortly, but he isn't too concerned with having the latest and greatest GPU and won't upgrade for a number of years anyways. Not sure about that cooler in 2020 lol. Maybe someone could suggest a better one PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YnDQ4n CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor ($409.99 @ B&H) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($34.99 @ B&H) Motherboard: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard ($199.99 @ Best Buy) Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory ($158.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Intel 660p Series 1.02 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($119.99 @ B&H) Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC Video Card ($399.99 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid Tower Case ($154.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($94.99 @ Best Buy) Total: $1573.92
  11. Figured I should replace the thermal compound on my Rx580 since it's pretty old at this point, and checked the temps beforehand. At idle it was about 26/27 Degrees and under load it got up to about 73ish. Took the thing apart and added new paste and now it's at about 28/29 degrees at idle (it was at 34 at one point, but I think the room temperature was different so I turned on AC) and 70-71 during load. Is the difference at idle likely because of difference in room temperature? Or is it possible I didn't add enough thermal paste or something? Also should I have changed out the thermal paste on the RAM or will that not make much of a difference? In the end I figure that the difference here is pretty minor so it probably isn't that big of a deal anyways, but I'm curious about this stuff.
  12. Well I figured using one of the dedicated tools would give me a higher chance of not messing it up as it seems you could do with a razor blade (although I'm sure you can mess it up with some of the tools too haha. I'll definitely do some research on the process and give it a shot though! Doesn't seem too difficult from what I've seen so far
  13. I'm using HWMonitor to watch temps (not sure how accurate this program is for this tbh) and Arctic Silver 5 for compound
  14. Had no idea furmark had killed GPUs before. As someone who's never delidded before how do I pick a good delidding tool? Some of the reviews for ones on amazon were claiming they destroyed the CPU
  15. Not a bad idea. I'll reset CMOS and see what happens
  16. So I recently picked up a used i7 4770k as a cheap upgrade from an i5 I had (didn't feel like swapping mobos and plan on making a full new system soonish). I picked up a Hyper 212 Evo cooler because it's cheap and I've got past experience with them. Ran Heaven, Furmark, and RDR2 as benchmarks after upgrading and didn't really see much of an improvement. Ran prime 95 for a few minutes and noticed the CPU cores were basically all hitting 100°C. Is this the likely cause for no real increase in benchmark performance? I assume the CPU is throttling down due to the high temps to prevent damage, but I'm pretty much a PC building novice so I figured you guys would know for sure. Is the issue here that the cooler isn't good enough? My room is normally around 72-74ish°F so I assume that isn't the problem. I didn't forget the thermal paste before someone asks, and my case has like 6 fans in it (I also added the extra fan to the Hyper 212). Is it possible I overtightened the CPU cooler? I have no clue if that can cause issues like this or not, but I felt like I might have tightened it too much when I was installing. The final other thing I considered is maybe I need to delid and replace the thermal paste since it's pretty old at this point. Just looking for some general guidance from someone with more knowledge here. 17. Well I think the GamersNexus video kinda convinced me to pick up a used CPU for pretty cheap (if I can find one of course). I might wait a month or two to get some more money and then grab a used GPU at that point.
  18. Well you're the first dissenter on upgrading the GPU haha. Would it really make that much of a difference?
  19. Yeah I think this is the best course of action for me (and what I was planning on). I'll get a new card when I get that new system!
  20. I've heard tell of these rumors. Hopefully they end up being true. Not sure I have the self control to wait that long haha
  21. Okay great! I do play CSGO and other shooters, but still figured the GPU would be what I would end up getting. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into some of those cards!
