Just so you know if you were not aware, you can run WireGuard in a docker container under unraid. Would remove the need to host it on the pi. But hey, I’d your happy with the setup, nothing wrong with that either 🙂

Lots of ways to go about this. You can either use a vpn to access the network shares (which is pretty handy) or something like next cloud which is basically your own Dropbox with ability to share links with people and create user accounts etc. just remember, you are taking on the security “headaches”, make sure you properly secure things because you don’t want people getting into your box…

Id start researching truenas vs unraid. There is A LOT to learn, so start doing some homework on those two operating systems and come back with questions. Both are great options for different use cases.

This might not be the Ideal way but its how im currently running my setup and it works for me.

I have a a fairly random assortment of low end computer parts so the hardware might not be ideal.
For software I run Unraid and the main reason I went with it was because it allows me to have redundancy while only needing to add single drives when I need more capacity. This is at the expense of speed though.
Another popular DIY NAS software is TrueNAS but I don't have any experience with it yet.

For remote access I have a RaspberryPi running a Wireshark VPN that allows be to tunnel into the network and connect to my NAS as if I was on the local network. I haven't been able to properly test speed and stability of my setup for connecting to the NAS but I haven't had any issues with general internet access over this VPN setup.

With this setup I only have access to the NAS as a network share so It doesn't have any fancy automatic file syncing from the computer accessing the system remotely.

Hope this is a helpful starting point.
