  1. I was please just to get into the Top 10K... but no new badges for me.
  2. Even though I didn't make it into the event, it was a reasonably productive run. Folding time period: 10.5 days Points: 189,955,276 WUs: 354 454 Team rank at start: 1,772 Team rank now: 904 Current overall ranking: 9,907 I'm happy to be in the Team top 1,000
  3. As the November 30th numbers are in, and as I'm not even part of the event, I'm finishing up on 3 of 4 systems. I'm happy with today's sprint, although I did observe some Fallout 76 and Genshin Impact daily's going on, that have hurt my results: It's been fun folding with the big dogs for a couple of days. (Points Today, #14 on the team.) My goal on Saturday was to get back into the team top 1,500, but if I keep my main PC Folding, I can probably make it into the team top 1,000 within the next 3 days. A takeaway from this experience is that the Ryzen 7950X3D seem to fold at a very high and consistent frequency. The 5950X and 5900X frequencies appear to bounce around a lot. The 3800X seems stable enough, just with a much lower clock speed. Quite surprising to see just how much more Folding grunt a RTX 3080 Ti (10,240 shaders) has over a RTX 3080 (8,704 shaders), given how you don't see a comparable uplift in gaming FPS. However, the 4070 Ti seems to be the big winner for Folding efficiency. As I sit here, my electrical rate is CAD $0.141 per kWh, high enough to not maintain today's sprint level (~48 kWh for the day) for any significant amount of time. For the hard core Folders here who don't have your own solar power system, your ongoing financial commitment to Folding must be considerable Happy Folding!
  4. Okay, throwing everything at it for the next couple of days. The trick will be keeping my son off Genshin Impact.
  5. I've completed over 100 WUs in the last 48 hours and 21M+ points yesterday (first full day of folding), but I'm not going to manage 20 days before December 6th. While I'm back in the Team top 1,500 (personal goal), I'm not sure if I should stick with this until the end, or at least not at this power consumption level, >1.2 kWh. I'm not even qualifying in this event towards an Event Veteran badge right now. I can potentially add an AMD 5900X and RTX 3080 to my effort to increase my WU rate, but again, I'm not officially in the event
  6. Thanks for the clarification. Regular WAN show viewer, so not sure how I missed that. I'm busy folding now with 3 of 4 house hold PCs. Watching the 3080 Ti vs the 4070 Ti, the 40 series sure is a lot less thirsty while still being pretty quick. Going to need the week to get back into the team top 1500.
  7. Fair enough, but a reminder at the start of the month would have been more helpful than November 24
  8. Nice of the WAN show to let us know about the Folding event after it is too late to be eligible for a prize. Starting playing along anyway, but not seeing work units for my GPUs
  9. I'm local and it would really love to come, but given the event duration, ventilation situation and no mask requirement, it doesn't seem safe to attend
  10. Having slept on the topic I would suggest that we need to first consider answering the question, why are we sheltering in place? Here's a good link to contemplate this: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-management/preparedbc/know-your-hazards Once we have completed a risk assessment for our circumstances, we can prioritize what supplies we will need. First we need supplies to get home. Then what we need food and water for at least 3 days. Once we have our 3 day food and water supply, we can set a new goal to stock up for 7 days. With 7 days of supplies on hand, it will be time to set a new goal to have supplies for 3 weeks. We shouldn't try to get everything we need all at once, because it will be easier to budget for our supplies over time, and as we gather our supplies we will have more opportunities to think about what we need and adapt our priorities accordingly. We should remember not to underestimate our need for water! https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-management/preparedbc/build-an-emergency-kit-and-grab-and-go-bag Probably the main benefit of tech in most "emergencies" is to improve situational awareness for planning. Primarily, understanding how long we can expect this situation to persist and to learn what we might be able to do to help our community. Thus emergency kit lists always include "Battery-powered or hand-crank radio". Being able to communicate our status to others during an emergency may be a priority. Mobile phones are great, but during the recent flooding in Southwest BC, Bell mobility and land line customers lost service due to a landslide cutting connectivity in the region, so we should expect that mobile service will be unavailable. Given the Earthquake risk and topographical challenges of Southwest BC, Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service, Citizens band radio and amateur radio could be useful tools. However, knowing how to use and the limitations of two-way radio communications needs a bit of practice and is not something we should be trying to learn during an emergency; we need to develop these skill before something happens. There are some fun tech opportunities for digital two-way communications such as Fldigi, Winlink (needs amateur radio license), LoRa and mesh networking. Practically, if we aren't at home when something happens, a lot of effort may be spent on food, water and shelter related activities, leaving tech low on the priority list. While sheltering at home, unless we have sustainable power generation (solar, wind, micro-hydro, etc), we likely need to conserve available battery power and generator fuel for high priority needs such as lighting, communications and perhaps refrigeration. A good overall source of information for preparing: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-management/preparedbc P.S. - I have used the pronoun "we" above, to contrast the counter-productive perspective of the "Glock" crowd.

  13. Due to where I live, while out and about it is literally easier to knock on LMG's door, than to send them an email. If you want to talk about being annoyed, spend over $250 on a pillow to then have it stink up your house! I was also not aware that LMG has the world exclusive on being busy! Certainly the rest of the world has nothing better to do, than sit around in a gas mask, waiting for LMG to find the time to deal with the situation. As their legal council, are you suggesting "We're busy" would be a good defense if they were sued for selling a product under false pretenses? /sarcasm I had no intention of demanding on the spot satisfaction, rather to leave them with the item (stinking up their space, not mine) while they could then review the situation at their leisure. (In practical terms, there are extenuating circumstances that encouraged a prompt response.) I was very polite and tried to be as helpful as possible.
  14. Indeed, the issue is with the EE Pillow. I am reasonably familiar with what Alpacas smell like, both in the flesh and the processed wool. The smell under discussion does not originate with the wool! Usually the processed wool doesn't smell like much of anything. The source of the odor seems likely related to the storage of the product at the warehouse or is an issue with the cardboard packaging. Either way, airing out the pillow didn't seem to be helping and was stinking up the house. Due to circumstances, this is not a situation we could live with. In one of the reviews for the pillow, the person states "It definitely arrived with a strong odor, but it was not too hard to remove. This is common with alpaca products", then links to an Alpaca product care page (https://www.yanantin-alpaca.com/how-do-you-remove-smells-from-alpaca-woolen-items/ ) that states "alpaca woolen garments are generally odor-free". Where does this person get the idea that a strong odor is normal? If the very bad odor coming from the EE pillow was normal, the product page should include a notice/warning about this and provide care instructions about how to minimize/eliminate the smell. I took my pillow to LMG to ensure they could experience the issue first hand (because, again, not alpaca wool smell) and to request a pillow without the terrible odor. Very promptly I received a refund (in US dollars, losing some bucks due to the change in exchange rate), but no acknowledgement of the issue or explanation. I appreciate the prompt refund but really wanted a pillow. If I reordered an EE pillow, would I get one nicely vacuum packed, like my original CPU couch pillows, or the same stinking and scuffed up EE pillow in cardboard? Who can say? Well, lttstore.com could say, but it doesn't. While it appears Linus is quality minded, this experience has been a disappointment. The pillow, new, in the original packaging, with scuffs and scratches:
  15. The product can literally not stay in my living space much longer. Worried it may be a source of harmful mold or similar, but storing it outdoors isn't feasible. After spending CA$271.35, I'm going to be really pissed off to have to put this in the garbage It's getting sealed up in a plastic garbage bag for now.
  16. Had an issue with a product received from lttstore.com. Emailed support a week ago, and have received no response. What's going? Do I need to drop by LMG and ask to speak to someone?
  17. A 850 watt power supply is probably recommended for the 3080 TI card, so time to get yourself a Corsair RM850 and then have the three separate PCIe power cables.
  18. Recently noticed that while my CPU thread count is set to 28, many projects e.g. 16930, seem to not be utilizing the CPU that heavily ~ 44%. Is thread utilization vary by project, or is something else going on? I do have client-type set to advanced for this CPU slot.
  19. For all practical purposes, due to Folding, I haven't done any serious gaming for 65 days. It is now time to shut down and vacuum out the PC, then play! 2000 WUs! Due to the event, I have contributed 2,004 WUs and 138,302,610 points to the Linus Tech Tips Folding Team: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=867950 It's been fun and the Gold forum badge looks good Looking forward to the next Folding event. Regards, ObeliskAG
  20. You know, saying that you built a new system without sharing the specifications (parts), is just being a tease.
  21. True - but as Nvidia hasn't been clear about any architectural changes between the TU104 and the TU106, we just have the stated specifications to go by. I'm going to guess that the TU104 (2060 KO) has more cache at the SM level than the TU106 (2060).
