    Phillips Downtown

    Review

    The Look and Feel

The DownTown have a love it or hate it type of look, I personally love it however I wish I would have gone with the black

and brown ones. The headband is made of a brushed aluminum band which has a silk wrapping and a thin foam

layer for padding, Also there is a very thin hard foam under the metal band which I presume hides the cable.

Next we have the ear cups which have a very interesting design for adjusting to your heads contours. It's also effective but that's for the comfort section. The outermost part of the earcup

has a plastic disc with the words Phillips on it, under that is aluminum from the headband. next we have the interesting pivot design I was talking about a moment ago,

which is connected with a slightly curved plastic disc with a cream colored ring around that says the words musicseal, I'm not sure what that is made of but it may seal in the sound more.

now moving on to the inside, The ear cups are made of a cheap faux leather, but even though it's cheap it feel soft. In the center of the ear cup is more of that silk which

feels super smooth against your ear. The rest I can just show you.

    The Build Quality

I can't think of too much to say, which is odd for me. The build quality is more than I would have expected for a $150 pair of headphones. The only two complaints I have is the use of a cheap feeling cable, and the way the silk is held on the headband. Other than those two small things these are built to last. I should also add that the cable is anti tangle so that is a Plus. I can't scratch the aluminum, the leather has not separated from the silk so far, and the swivel is robust. I did rip the silk of the headband because I thought the L and R markings were button's so I pulled on them, but I was able to put the silk back on over it. Just a tip don't pull on the silk where the L and R markings are.

    Comfort

Comfort is the second, or sometimes first important factor when Buying headphones. I will start by saying these are the first pair of supra-aural headphones (On Ear). So take what I say about this with a grain of salt. I think these are acceptably comfortable. I can wear them for 2 to 3 hours until i feel discomfort. which is about as good as my AKG K550's but nowhere near my Sennheiser HD 448 which I can wear for 10+ hours. The comfort is helped by the light weight, but other than that there's not much going for it. The earcup cushions are about a 1/4" thick, and the headband cushion is about 1/8" thick. overall they are moderately comfortable.

    Sound Quality

Okay so as in the usual fashion I waited till the end for the sound quality. In short the frequency response is in the shape of a V, or your classic fashion headphone signature.

    Frequency response

    The highs

are there, They however leave me feeling like i'm missing some of the instruments drag (how long a cymbal rings after it's hit). The main reason is the bass masks the high frequency a little. and the high frequency bleeds into the mids. which gives a distant sound, but not the kind of distance soundstage gives you. it just sounds like a software reverb for alley way.

    The mids

as I said are masked by the highs which are masked by the lows, So vocals sound a little washed out and static (loss in dynamic range). there is an over emphasis on the instruments, which sounds like it may make these good at classical, but you would be wrong. There are still plenty of mid range frequencies in classical, which are just overwhelmed, by thundering bass drums and the brass section.

    The lows

despite the name of the section it's not to sad here, the bass is very nice it has punch with plenty of volume, and I was shocked by the bass performance of these small cans. unfortunately the bass just couldn't get along with mids and highs and just suppresses them.

    the rest

The soundstage is the but small, still it's better than no soundstage. These have decent clarity with minimal distortion at loud volumes, and they have excellent isolation for supra-aural headphones. but with all this said I'm not a fan of V shaped Signatures, and these fit under everything I hear with V shaped signatures. So if you are a fan of V shaped sounds then these might sound great to you, just not for me.

    The Conclusion

Overall these are arguably stylish supra-aural headphones with good isolation and some sound stage, and suffer from the normal fashion headphone sound. but I can still feel comfortable recommending these to a fashion headphone user. who may be abusive to his/her headphones.

    Vortex PBT Keycaps

    Review

    The Prereview

I bought the ducky Legend about 6 weeks ago and Have loved it, and about 1 week after I ordered it I bought the vortex PBT Keycaps on massdrop, so I have been waiting awhile for these to come (5 Weeks).

So read to find out If I wasted 5 weeks and my money or if these were worth the time and cost.

    The Unboxing

Well it was more of an unwraping, These came in a small brown box labeled MASSDROP, and in the box all you get are the keycaps. They are sadly on in a thick plastic bag. I was sad because I saw some reviews on youtube, and the keycaps came in a nice cylindrical box, but I suppose that these won't be damaged. It may be due to the fact that I ordered from MassDrop. I just like to collect nice boxes.

    The Feel & Installation

They feel like 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper, if you know what that feels like. I was honestly expecting them to feel more rough, but they are actually quite smooth, not as smooth as the keycaps included with my Ducky Legend, which are standard ABS Keycaps. Even though they are not what I expected The feel is still super nice, they are able to keep my fingers from slipping off of the keys.

Installation Is what You should expect, Take the old caps off, and put the new ones on. But if you are replacing your keycaps on an old keyboard, then you may want to take advantage of it being bare, and clean and lube the switches. my keyboard is new so no cleaning was needed.

    The Build

Well, their just keycaps right, well yes but very nice ones. These are made of PBT Plastic, which is a more rigid plastic compared to ABS. Which means it should never get that shiny spot that abs tends to get after prolonged use. It has a melting point of 433 F, where as ABS has no melting point because it's Amorphous, but It sort of melts at 221 F, While these numbers don't really matter to most people some may find them interesting. What may matter to some though is PBT is sensitive to hot water >140 F. So if you planned on getting the white ones and dying them with RIT dye I would not do that. The other part of the name of these keycaps is Double shot injection molded. This refers to the method used in making the legends on the keycaps. In short this means the legend and the cap are made of completely seprate pieces of plastic, so the legends will never get rubbed off and you won't be able to feel the legends.

    The Look

The main reason you are probaly getting new keycaps if for aesthetics, so to me these look nice. They are not as black as the old keycaps but they have a nice font. However they look sorta dusty, because of the texture. I don't mind this because it matches the look of the metal housing of the keyboard. If you were curious as to how the strong the backlight is shining through this different material, you should be happy to know it is as bright as the original keycaps, however some of the keys like control loose some brightness at the ends of the word.  But these pictures should help you make up your own mind.

    The Sound

This section will be short. You might not have known that the keycap will change the sound of your typing. There are two sound when typing the click, which is what happens when you activate the switch. This is only on Blue, and Green switches. The other sound is the Clack. This is the sound your keyboard has that is unique to it. it happens when the keycap hits the plate under it. So these keycaps change the clack, the sound from these keycaps is more quick, and full. It has a slightly deeper sound. which I find sounds more high quality.

    Conclusion

Well I think I covered everything. Overall are these worth the price I paid. The first day I had them I was disappointed and thought I wasted my money. However It's been about 2 weeks and I am every happy with them, I now love the subtle texture difference and the sound they make, I am sad That the color wasn't the same as my original keycaps, Because I wanted to use my old space bar, but I can look past this. In the end It's up to you if you think these are worth the price, just remember these will last forever so you can put them on any future cherry mx compatible keyboard you get.

That sucks, about your rig. I would try to find a cheap cooler to replace the AIO, just to see if that's the problem, hopefully your CPU isn't fried. You should definitely write an impression of the Grado, i'm curious to see if them being made in brooklyn is good or not.

China is a good place to manufacture, and the quality is good depending on the manufacturer, However I wish companies would stop outsourcing, because it's economically wrecking our country. but the quality of stuff produced in china is still very competent. Sennheiser and Audio Technica make their stuff in china if i'm not mistaken, excluding their high end stuff.

    Moto G Review

    The Build

The Moto G in short is built, like most phones in the $300 to $400 price range, which for the price ($100) was a great surprise. The buttons are nice with a firm push required and a nice click upon actuation, not mushy  and unresponsive like some of the other phones I've tried.

The next surprise was how well the phone felt out of the box initially, I say initially because the thin piece of plastic under the 3.5mm jack broke, when I put the white back on

and with this piece broken the back creaks slightly on one side, and flexes a bit. This was not a major issue because I can just put the other cover on, and I can't blame motorola because there really wasn't a way to get around this problem, so just take note of this if you buy one. The black and white backs have different feelings, The black one is a soft touch material, like the nexus 7 but a little less thick, and the white one feels like a smooth painted plastic. I would imagine if you bought any extra backs in color they would feel like the white one. If you are wondering does this thing bend, with a decent amount of pressure I was able to see a little flex but it was flexing and not bending. The screen does not appear to have an oleophobic coating because I get fingerprints on it all the time, so you may want to buy some oleophobic spray if fingerprints bug you like they do me.

    Device Tour

With the price I hope you were not expecting Ir Blasters and Wireless charging, because the Moto G is basic when it comes to features. on the outside you get a micro usb port, 3.5 mm jack, front/rear camera, speaker, and flash. The dimensions are 129.9x65.9x11.6(mm) at 143g. The screen is 4.5 inch at  720x1280, and is surprisingly under Gorilla Glass 3, it has a 2070mAh.

    Design and Ergonomics

Because looks are subjective, my pictures should provide you with the ability to judge for yourself. I will however tell you what I think about the design. To me it looks better with the white back on, as long as you keep it clean. I like the how the front is just a clean slate, even though the curve is much more ergonomic, i prefer the candybar style smart phone, some say they have harsh lines but to me that provides a more solid grip.

As you can see from these pictures the Moto G has a curved ergonomic design, as I just said I prefer the candybar shape. So I don't love the feel of this in the hand I don't have a problem holding it, you can also see the dimple in the back that motorola is doing to all their phones, and like many have said the dimple is in the perfect spot, I actually use the dimple to flick the phone around when I pull it out of my pocket. also if you want to reach the top corner of the phone you should have no problem, I can easily reach the top left corner, my hands are 7 3/4" long from tip of my middle finger to the crease on my wrist.

    The performance

If you were expecting the Moto G to be slow based on the price you will be surprised. I have had very few issues with performance of this. I would compare it to the speed of a samsung galaxy s4, it outperforms my mom's s3 and it, has a much better battery life. As you should expect it's no iphone 6 or note 4, but this thing is no slouch either. watch this video to see the speed of normal browsing. Battery life is good I'm a not a power user but it gets me through a day with about 40%, I expect a power user to get to 10% by the end of a long day. and if you were dreading the fact that this 720p screen, fear not, the screen on this could be more sharp, but it was not something that I really notice unless I'm looking for it, every other aspect of the screen is great, I can read it in daylight, and the color of the screen is balanced maybe slightly cool, but not really noticeable either. the contrast is good, if you compare the black on screen to the bezel there is a little bit of a difference but with how bright the whites are it makes for a great contrast.

    The Camera

The camera on here is pretty great, not nearly as feature rich as a GS5 or a HTC One M8, and the quality isn't as good as those either. but I think this takes great pictures if you have ample lighting, They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I'm going to save myself the trouble and show you click here. Sorry there aren't that many good photo's on there I will add more later so come back and see.

The detail, isn't that great due to the fact that it's only 5MP but I've been happy enough with it. The front camera works well, and is surprisingly good with low light, I'm able to get a great picture in just the glow of my monitor. It should suffice for snapchat and instagram.

    The Speaker and Calling

The media experience on this thing is good. in a quiet room the speaker at max volume is very loud, however in a noisy environment the speaker lacks a little volume, it is still audible, just not very enjoyable. Well this is a phone afterall so can it do it's core function well. yes. it is great at being a phone just as good as the iphone 6 and GS5. The earpeice is loud enough for moderately noisy environments, it may be hard to hear at a concert, but then again anything is, and I have had very few moments where I had to say WHAT? 12 times, which I tend to do on alot of phones. when it comes to the other end, I've had no complaints and I haven't had many people say WHAT? to me, so overall good experiences.

    Conclusion

In the end the Moto G 2013 comes out on top as the best value smartphone, that is other than maybe it's newer brother the 2014 model,

top one 7/10, the focus seems a little blurry, nice color, but some shadows and highlights could have helped the over all effect.

8/10, It's creative, and creepy. I think it may look a little better if you change the color temp a little cooler, and turn up the sharpness just a little, So you can distinguish a little fur, also if you did what I just said you would also need to turn down the exposure.

I took this at New Years, at about 4:30 am, Fun times.

    AKG K550
    Review
    The PreReview
I got these for christmas, I asked “santa” for them. And I requested that “santa” bought them used. So I've had these for a little over 3 months. Now if your wondering why I wanted them used, i'll tell you. I prefer used headphones because they are already broken in, in the sound department. I currently own 5 pairs of headphones including these.
Strap in it's going to be a long one
    Enjoy the review

    The Unboxing Experience
When I got the box for the AKG K550 I was surprised with how sturdy the box is. It feels like its made of plywood and acrylic. Even though it's made of cardboard and plastic. With that said, the box was damaged upon arrival, this may be due to the fact that I bought it used. So your box should arrive in pristine condition. Inside I got warranty info that was not applicable to me, I also got a 3.5mm to 6.3 mm adapter that is threaded. And that is it
    The Design

This thing is a work of art. From the golden ring around the ear cups, to the finely brushed, slightly golden headband.

The design team in Austria clearly know a thing or two about design. The design team thought out every little detail.

They have a nice to the touch, soft touch plastic on the ear cups, very plush foe leather ear cups, with memory foam padding. My favorite part about the ear cups are the metal circles on the side, they always manage to catch the light beautifully.

The joint connecting the headband to the ear cups are made of Aluminum. The joint also allows the ear cups to swivel, so you can set them flat on the desk. And the headband as I said before is beautiful.

But where these really show the design teams attention to detail is in the small things. Everything down to the hinge pin was made to look beautiful. The cable is thick yet very flexible. And the 3.5 mm jack at the end is gold plated and has an Aluminum housing, and it's also threaded so if you want to use the included 6.3mm adapter you can be confident it will never come off by accident.

If you are worried you won't be able to tell Left from Right then AKG has you covered. There is a very large L and R in the Left and Right ear cup. However if your in the dark just remember the cable goes on the left. Also AKG numbered the notches on the headband so if you let someone use them you can no what notch to set it to, for me this was 3 for my left and 4 for my right.

    The Build

But all look and no play makes jack a dull boy. And when it comes to throwing these around. I would be confident that they would not break, however I wouldn't want to throw them. So Even though these say they were designed in Austria, they were not built there. They were made in China, but today that doesn't mean they have crappy build quality. In fact they are very well built. During the 3 months I have owned them I have not questioned the quality once. If I had one complaint it would be that the glue holding on the top cushion is visible just a little on the side. But that is all I can think of. These are an incredibly well built pair of headphones.

    Comfort

With my previous description of the ear cups you would expect them to be like a cloud on your head. However I never mentioned how heavy these are. They weight a ton almost 2 ½ times the amount of my Sennheiser HD 448. These are comfortable up to a certain time, For me this was about 4 hours. After 4 hours they give me a slight headache. Also if you are worried about them making you sweat, then you're right to be worried, I'm not the type of person to sweat a lot, but these headphones make me sweat after about 2 hours.
    The Sound

I will break this one up into sub categories. Brace yourself this will be long.
    Bass

If you want bass cannons then these are not for you. However if you like very tight and accurate bass then these are what you want in this price range. The bass drops off the slightest bit at the 20 to 40hz which is a good thing, because if you have a perfectly flat frequency response curve the sub bass actually sounds louder than the rest of the bass tones. So by pushing the sub bass down a little you get what sounds like a flat curve. As far as mid and high bass go they are clean and controlled with great detail at even low volume, which is a hard thing to accomplish. And when you decide to crank the volume up, which you should never do, but if you do decide to you will be pleased to hear no distortion in the bass. The one complaint I have with the bass is on rare occasions I would get a little pressure, mainly when it was turned up to loud.
    Mid Range

The mid range, to me is one of the most important parts of the overall sound quality, and is the most important in the frequency response department. Because it's so easy to ruin the sound by messing up the mids. So thankfully the mid range on these were very good, not muddy or overpowered. So this means vocals came through with great clarity. And also every sound in the mid range was clear and undistorted. At no point in the 3 months I've owned these was I dissapointed in their ability to reproduce accurate and crystal clear vocals.
    Treble

The Treble on the AKG's are great as well. They aren't to loud to where they're discomforting, nor are they to quiet. However they are not perfect, they don't have distortion but they are a tad bit sibilant. I only found this a slight issue because it's on rare occasion, but it's worth mentioning. The treble really shines when acoustic music is playing and you can all the detail when the guitarist moves his hand up the frets. And even when he plucks the strings, there's an accurate and satisfying “click”. Overall I was impressed with their high range performance. It sounds like the highest range is turned down a slight bit, which like with the sub bass, is a good thing. Because those high frequency's can be overpowering. Which can cause fatigue and sibilance.
what I said is backed up by these graphs I found from Golden Ears

    Soundstage

These are closed headphones, which closed headphones are generally associated with small soundstage. However these are the best closed headphones for soundstage. With that said they still don't have the same openness as an open pair of headphones would. But they truly do give you a sense of placement and awareness. If you really want the soundstage to shine on these then use some high quality Live albums.
Music I Based My Thoughts On

I listen to music at least 5 hours a day, most of the time 9 hours a day. So I really listened to a bunch of music with these, ranging from Beethoven to Frank Sinatra to Pink Floyd, and everything in between. All my files are high quality FLAC files. Some are MP3's, I used an amp a few times but mostly I used my computers audio. When listening to Pink Floyd Time I really got a sense of how much time Allen Parson took when mastering that song, and album. In the intro you are surround by the noise of clocks, going up/down back/forth, The whole song is just beautiful on these headphones. For my Live testing I mostly used Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged, WOW! That is how I immediately felt, this album sounds better than their studio recorded stuff. Their is a strong sense that your their in the audience. And just for some nice Soul/Jazz. So I listened to Norah Jones, I loved how clean and close the music sounded, ironically the closeness of the music gave it so much depth. And these headphones handled her vocals so incredibly well.
    Other Sound

So this is where I put the stuff I couldn't make into their own sub categories. These are not forgiving to crappy mastering, Some of my music was just horrible to listen to. Not that the file was a low quality copy, but the people who mastered it thought that it would sound good if everything was playing in center. Which if you didn't know overcrowds the drivers, so it sounds like mush. These headphones are very easy to drive I plug them into my phone and get similar volume as when in the amp, however the amp does open the sound up a lot. I would not recommend them for portable use though because they are heavy, and isolation is only good, not great.
    Conclusion

So if you read all of this I applaud you. But what do I think about the AKG K550. Well they are an excellent headphone for those concerned about design, and build quality. They are not a good headphone to wear all day, and they are great headphones for indoor isolation, maybe if you want to drown out the sound of the city, or your kids these headphones are great. And if your someone who just wants a nice flat response and decent isolation with a good soundstage then these were made for you.

    DUCKY LEGEND REVIEW

    The Pre Review

I bought the Ducky Legend About a week ago, I bought it because I'm a sucker for aluminium. and because I wanted to buy a mechanical keyboard from a reputable brand. Originally I wanted to go with the Corsair K95 RGB because I wanted MACRO keys and again I'm a sucker for aluminium, but due to the fact that they have had manufacturing problems and they don't have any available with cherry MX Blue's I decided to do some research and after about A week of research I decided on the Ducky legend. The only other keyboard I owned before this was this.  I've had no problems with it other than the design got old to me very fast, now I think It's horrendous. So this is my first mechanical Keyboard.

    The Unboxing

The box the Legend came in was lovely, clean and simple just like the keyboard.

however the protection on the inside could have been better, with some softer closed cell foam. It's also very easy to take out no complex cardboard folding just pull the cable out the little back area and that's It.

As far as documentation goes there is a registration card, and A manual that is not labeled manual. and don't throw this one away, It helps a lot if you've never used a Ducky Keyboard before.  As far as accessories go you get a set of grey WASD keycaps and a ducky keycaps puller that doesn't work with some of the keys because the plastic doesn't fit between the metal area. But this is not that big of a deal.

The Design, Feel, and Build Quality

The Main Thing I love about this keyboard is the design. some hate it from what i've seen, but It's very clean and sleek. The front is covered in a 5mm thick piece of aluminium that is anodized black or silver I got the Black, and has a slight bead blasted finish but still feels smooth to the touch. I love when I wake up in the morning and touch it and it's cold.

    front bottom by spacebar

The whole keyboard feels extremely solid, It literally feels like a solid block of aluminium. When you tap on the metal it's a nice thud, not a hollow sound, there's no creaking or flex at all. I picked it up and twisted with enough force to bend a Phone. and it stayed as straight as a ruler. That may due to the fact that it weighs 3 POUNDS!!. The bottom is made with plastic that almost felt like metal when I took it out of the package. The bottom is also very clean.

    back and metal sticker

all there is the rubber feet/riser feet, a metal sticker with the info on it, and a reassuring Quality Control sticker that peels off easy.

    rubber feet

    riser feet have rubber too

The Keycaps feel smooth and like they are of great quality for OEM keycaps, the letters have a slight texture that I can only really feel occasionally while typing,

I have ordered some Vortex double shot PBT keycaps from MassDrop, and they should be here in a week I'll do an update when I get them. Even the Usb Cable feels premium the sleeving is extremely soft and the cable is a nice thickness.

    The Back lighting and Features

My Ducky Legend came with White back lighting, but the silver model comes with blue back lighting. The brightness goes from giving me a Headache to can't even tell it's on when the lights are on. And there are six brightness levels. I use it one below max when the lights are on, and three below max when the lights are off.

All of the keys are for the most part evenly lit with the exception of some of the Number pad keys, and the space bar. but It actually looks nice like that on the space bar.

This keyboard has enough feature for me excluding a few. My last keyboard had media playback keys which this does not have, but I just downloaded KeyTweak and made some over the keys I don't use media keys =)
I did think I was going to want macro keys but now I thought what I can do Is buy an external NumPad and just put custom keycaps on, and remap them manually. But on to things the keyboard actually has. You can adjust repeat delay and rate, with Fn+F9 to enter the mode, then Fn+F1-4 for Delay and Fn+F5-8 for Rate. this keyboard also features N-KeyRollover which can be turned on with Fn+N until the space bar starts to breath. It also supports two custom lighting modes. and has volume up/down and mute. along with a cool button that opens a calculator.

Finally there is a Windows lock which can be enabled with Fn+Left Win for 3 seconds. This keyboard comes with 5 lighting modes including All on, Breathing, Reactive Fade, Wave, and Off.

    Dimensions- 458 x 155 x 36.5 ( mm )
    Weight- 1.47KG / 3.24 LBS

    The Experience

Being the fact that this is my first mechanical keyboard take what I say in this area with a grain of salt. I Love the way the legend feels when typing. I bought mine with cherry MX Blues which I know are my favorite because I have tried all of the other switches at stores.

This keyboard does however feel much better to type on than the other keyboards that I have tried because when you bottom out there is absolutely no flex. I found that even though I'm not used to the keyboard or mechanical switches yet, I still type a little faster. and I expect that to improve over time. Another thing I love it the sound. while the sound of the click is the same as every other cherry MX blue, the Clack is different from Keyboard to keyboard, and this one gives a nice loud clack that's not too high pitched. Overall with the short time i've used this keyboard I love it. with that said I'm still getting new keycaps that will change the typing experience, So I will be sure to update this and/or do a separate review of the vortex PBT Keycaps.

    Click for Sound

    The Conclusion

The Ducky Legend Is a great Mechanical keyboard for anyone who likes minimalist and sleek design, also for anyone who tends to want to beat people repeatedly with their keyboard, because it's built like a tank.  So If you want your keyboard to be a heavy slab of metal on your desk then this is definitely what you want. but if your thing is flashing lights, a million features and angular design, then this is not the keyboard for you. riser feet have rubber too

I Like the fact That with the Ducky legend I can take the frame off and put on my own custom anodized frame because I love to tinker with stuff and make my own custom things. I was thinking about getting a KBC Poker II, But I kind of want to try the ducky mini, because I feel like it would compliment this very well. I do see exactly where you are coming from though All of ducky's keyboards look very similar.

Thanks. It took all day, but worth spreading the info. As I am typing this I'm realizing how much I dislike the Left Shift button. The keys with stabilizers could be better but, I still love the keyboard.
