  1. Turns out they dropped the case. I think the lesson learned for me here is to verify my assumptions. And consult with a professional if need arises because law are very complicated.
  2. I appreciate the different perspectives, thank you all for that. I absolutely agree that the guy should hire a lawyer and that this video and his response are probably not helping his cause. There is definitely more to it and and I had overlooked some of the details, I also don't know a thing about any law so thank you for breaking it down. It's clearly not as simple as big corp bullying small average Joe (and I apologize for the inflammatory title). It still does feel like it took an excessive amplitude, but I understand a company needing to protect their IP. As someone said the 250k is probably the default penalty since he didn't show up in court. Regardless, that small mistake might end up costing him a great deal. Looking forward, I'm not entirely sure how one would ensure they do not violate anybody's IP around the world. Would creators need to limit to their own country like wanderingfool said, or perhaps consult with IP lawyer when selling artwork? Maybe it's sufficient to do your due diligence before selling merchandise and hope no one claims trademark infringement, and if someone does then consult a lawyer?
  3. A relatively small YouTube content creator I follow just uploaded a video about his ongoing legal troubles with a copyright law firm which I think sets a troubling precedent. In this case GPLama, an Australian content creator got sued for a vast amount of money by a German law firm over a design he used on his RedBubble online merch account. The design in question, a series of chevrons, is in my opinion very generic and not easily attached to any company, logo or product that I know of. The troubling part of this story is that GPLama complied with a cease and desist and removed the alleged trademark infringing merch from his storefront, but is still being sued for unreasonable amounts of money by a company he's never heard of before halfway around the world. If this sort of practice is legal this means that big copyright law firms can easily prey on small content creators, leaving them with very little recourse. In his own words: source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0CAv6PGmCM I'm sure LMG is big enough not to be bullied by copyright "trolls" but a lot of smaller creators don't have the means of hiring lawyers or the luxury of having their own merch platform and are at the mercy of platforms like RedBubble who will throw anyone under the bus without any second thought. I wonder if there are online merch platforms who protect their partners from frivolous claims like this one and I'm hoping this practice will not become more widespread, preventing content creators from diversifying their revenue streams and increasing their dependence on YT algorithm (go floatplane!)
  4. Unfortunately with travel restrictions I won't be able to see him for a while. Yeah thanks for the input, I feel like that's definitely something I overlooked, iMac displays are miles ahead of what you get on HP AIO. And I forgot about speakers but reviews of the new mac were all about the new speakers, all of that for a similar price. Sounds like a good option. That's what I was expecting, I see LTT and GN reviews pointing out frametime consistency drops but it makes sense that for internet browsing, occasional excel sheet you wouldn't see a difference.
  5. That's a fair point there might be way more performance for the same price in prebuilt PC than aio. Thanks for your input
  6. I was thinking the same, but I doubt he will manage wilth MacOS (the same old windows he's used to is already a challenge). It would relieve me of my Tech Support™ duties since I've never used a Mac so that a positive, maybe?
  7. I know it's unfortunate but that's a compromise I'm willing to make given part availability and my current incapacity to go and build him a PC
  8. As the Contractually Designated Tech Support™ member of the family I need to advise my dad to buy something prebuilt. His usage is general computing, web browsing etc. nothing fancy. He found an HP Pavilion 27-d0109a for around $1500 CAD. Now I don't know a thing about laptop hardware but I pulled up the spec sheet and was wondering specifically two things, is the i5-10400T at 2.0 any good for lightweight usage while maintaining decent response time when booting or loading a web page for example. The other concerning spec was the 16GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM in 1x16 config. For me personally 1x16 would be a no go unless I plan to upgrade in a few months time, but does it make a real world difference outside of gaming? Other thing about that RAM is the speed, that sounds quite low for 2021 but again maybe it's a myopic hw enthusiast's perspective. I'm tempted to go with the, "do you like how it looks, can it browse the websites you like to browse, if yes take it" approach but I'd appreciate any feedback.
  9. Don't quote me on that I could be wrong, but I thought there was a law in California preventing employers from disallowing employees' salary talk. Regardless I'm sure they can bully people into keeping it secret. It's unfortunate but they are not the only ones in the software industry to be "exploiting passion".
  10. Hey Doc, did you end up upgrading to the 10600k or are you waiting for the kf? If so what are your observations in terms of cooling? I'm going down the same upgrade path myself and I'm wondering if I can get away with reusing the 212 evo until I get myself some other form of exotic cooling.
  11. Everything Chris said is accurate I would only add one extra step, on Windows go to Settings > Phone and click "Unlink this PC". You should be able to restart the pairing process. Worked for me every time.
  12. I have what I think is a dying hard drive in my PC and I wanted to get the community's opinion before taking any action. The drive is a barracuda 3TB 5200rpm and is well within warranty so I'm thinking of opening a support ticket Monday but I'm still not sure if that's not just "normal" HDD noise. For context, I play games with over hear headphones so I don't often get a chance to listen to my PC and even if I did my GPU's cooler is so loud it would easily cover the sound of a vitamix crushing stones. Anyhow here's the clip, apologies for the dust I cleaned it after taking the vid. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! Cheers PS: I don't have any valuable data on there, only steam games I can re-download if needed i5uyq8.mp4
  13. I tried both and noticed that on Debian 9 I would run out of RAM on a 512MB instance, where as on CentOS it would run fine.
