So the spare router I had laying around (asus rt-n10+) works flawlessly with my desktop. I was so sure it wasn't the router but that's pretty conclusive I'd say In the interest of science, I will continue this conversation pointing out that even though I had tested the first router with other computers, both of those computers were running FAST ethernet, not gigabit. If there was an issue with the routers processing, it could be trying to run at gig speeds but not being able to keep up with itself but still somehow be unaware that it was failing. Does that sound legit to you guys?

I forgot to list it but I did disable firewall. And yes, totally stock OS right now. absolutely nothing installed. Wouldn't your trick there be similar to using my phone in USB tethering mode? (which did work but now doesn't)

Well i do have a spare junker router somewhere around here, I'll give that a shot and report back.

Yeah along the lines of what the others are saying, I wonder if he's connected to the 5ghz band and you're stuck on 2.4, which is much more liable to be slowed down by other devices being in use. Of course this is only possible if your router is broadcasting on bother bands

Really? I hadn't heard that. This one has been treating me well for a couple years. Where'd you hear that?

One interesting thing to note is that both my onboard and the new USB NIC are realtec brand. Seems far out but I guess it's possible that there's something wrong with my router in a way that it doesn't play along with realtec stuff. On the other hand, the ethernet NIC on my laptop is realtec but is working fine

A valid though but that doesn't explain why other PC's are working fine, even attached to the same ethernet cable that my desktop fails to connect to

I did go directly to modem, didn't fix. All other computers in the house work fine, even with the same ethernet cable plugged into the same port on the same router. I HAVENT tried a new router, but to say that this one is not functioning based on the information I have would seem far fetched

How it works is "GeForce" is Nvidia's brand they put on theyre gaming graphics cards, so all 750ti's are "geforce" Zotac is one of many people that take the GPU that nvidia has designed and customizes it (or doesn't) and slaps their name on it and sells it. Zotac is a decent brand, but basically pick one you think looks cool for a good price, check the reviews on that particular card and get it *edit* I should go on to say that you'd be going through the partner company (zotac, etc) for things like support, warranties and so on. So that's something to consider, if you have a preexisting preference to a company that makes a 750ti I'd say get that one

Where do I even start? I suppose I'll start with a story: I was in my garage on my laptop skyping a buddy while doing some maintenance on my motorcycle when I lost my wifi connection. I went inside and my dad was complaining about how he lost wifi connection on his laptop. I sat down at my desktop with intent to log into my router's web UI but found that it too had connection issues. I did the logical next step and power cycled that router and modem, while the two aforementioned laptops were cruising great on wifi after this, my desktop still was saying either "unidentified network, no internet" or would be stuck at "identifying". At this point, the only computer in my house with issues is my desktop I've been pretty vague intentionally; You'll understand shortly. Things I've tried: -Power cycling router and modem -testing three different ethernet cables -testing with every port on the router -installing new firmware on router -factory resetting router -ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew **** -Sometimes this would complete but not improve anything, sometimes this command would result in an error -the whole collection of "winsock" commands that everyone on google says to use**** -deleting and recreating winsock registry keys, as google results instructed -testing other computers with same cable and port on router, comfirming that it's not the cable or the router -running the built in diagnostics which informed me that one or more protocols were MISSING on my computer, but wasn't able to fix it -restoring to a restore a couple days in the past, and another a week in the past -using my phone in USB tethering mode as a wifi adapter -- EUREKA! I HAVE INTERNET! it must be my NIC, ordered a new USB NIC from Amazon -New USB NIC shows up today. Plug it in, windows recognizes it immediately as a realtec gigabit ethernet USB NIC - AWESOME! .......... Same issue. -so I FORMAT MY FREAKING C: DRIVE and reinstall windows 10. -STILL -DOESNT -WORK -I unplug my storage drive, and delete/rebuild my raid array (C: drive) and reinstall windows 10 again. Still same issue. -Knowing that that leaves basically nothing left to troubleshoot, I format my C: drive again and install windows 7 this time. Still. Doesn't Work. -Running the built in network diagnostics even after reformatting and doing a clean windows install gives the same "missing protocol" error, on both available NICs -I test my laptop with the same cable and same router port, again, and again, and again. Laptop works, desktop doesn't (with onboard or new USB NIC) -Somewhere along the line using my phone in USB tethering mode stopped working as well So now I'm left with this desktop without any drivers (except ethernet drivers, obviously), with an unauthorized copy of Windows 7 and no hope of getting internet. I've got a lot of experience with this stuff. As a matter of fact I do it for a living. Am I crazy or is somebody playing some trick on me? There literally isn't anything left to troubleshoot. Everything SHOULD work, there's no link in the chain left to test. This forum post is a final plea. I'll accept ANY suggestion and embrace any condolences or sympathy. My rig, if it matters: MSI z77a-g45 (realtec brand gigabit nic) i5-3570k 8gb 2133 corsair ddr3 HD6950 windows 10 pro/Windows 7 pro (depending on when you ask) Anker brand (realtec OEM) gigabit/USB 3.0 NIC

I think you've sold me. Good job:P And again, all the thanks to you. -
That's so unfortunate It's not bad where I'm at. Insurance is especially cheap! Something like $140 a year when I told them that I hadn't even ridden one before

Yeah I suppose that's like $50-60 for a lot more opportunity. I am definitely considering it more closely now. Will also have to check out that cooler, I have used it once before but that was quite some time ago and I don't even remember how it performed.
