I have a rx 570 and I'm running Ubuntu 20.04. I want to be able to pass the graphics card to a vm so I can boot up a windows vm from time to time to play some games. Will passing the graphics card mean that I won't be able to see anything on my host? If so, is there anyway that I can split up my card's resources (for example give 3gb of vram to the vm) and pass some to the vm (Similarly to how you can do it with quadros)?

Switching from Windows To Linux
MartinIAm replied to MartinIAm's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
My main reason for switching is because I develop 90% of the time on my computer compared to a year ago where I didn't even try. And for me so much of the software that I used had better compatibility with macos and linux. -
Switching from Windows To Linux
MartinIAm replied to MartinIAm's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
It's good that I don't use either of them in that case. -
I am switching from Windows to Ubuntu after triple booting (macos, ubuntu, windows) got annoying. Is there anything I should know before switching and wiping Windows other than native software support?

Remove the dot at the end of the code.

And it's a pretty bad time to get hit right now.

I have a dell r610 and a dell r620. On my r610 I pull around 4 kilowatts per day. On my r620 I pull around 2.5 kilowatts per day. My r620 has double the load and double the ssds that my r610 has. I run these servers 24/7 and my electricity is around 7 cents per kilowatt. Is it worth it to sell my r610 (maybe around $200) and get an r620 for around $350 to save almost 2 kilowatts per day?

If the monitor is meant or advertised for 144hz then you shouldn't be able to damage it in any way by running it at 144hz.
-
I would recommend 165hz 1440p as most people don't really notice that big of a difference between 144hz (or 165hz in your case) and 244hz. Unless you are playing competitive games and you are very high ranked then you probably don't need it and the resolution bump would just make the games look a little nicer. The 970m is better in almost every task other than LoL with the gtx 1050 having 10 more fps. Here is the example: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970M-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1050-Mobile/m17319vsm211022- 29 replies

After all of these posts I have decided to simply put on the "Silent" fan preset from AORUS. This doesn't not include 0rpm mode and keeps my temps in a better position (50c Idle, 65c under load). I actually found out that most of my noise is coming from my 4 hard disk drives and I decided to turn them off after 15 minutes of no usage. Thanks!
-
How much longer?
-
I have set my fan curve to be pretty quiet with some of my fans being at 0 rpm. I am letting my cpu stay around 70 degrees Celsius (under load and idle). I am using the stock cooler that came with the cpu because my old liquid cooler got a little too noisy. I have a ryzen 5 1600 and left it at stock speeds. Are these temps fine or should I go a little lower?

Simple web server that catches POST requests
MartinIAm posted a topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
Hey! I have a mobile app that has a feedback page and I need some kind of server to read and write those requests down. I could setup some kind of Ruby on Rails server, but Rails is a little too heavy for what I would need it for (even just the api mode). Is there some kind of debian program that I can use to catch all these POST requests and write it into a file of some sort? That is all I would need. Simply a web server that catches these POST requests and write them down (I'd be fine even if it doesn't parsing them). What can I do? -
Theoretically you could with usb 3.0, but it wouldn't be a good experience (at all really). You would also need a power supply to power the pcie lane. Also, you would only be able to run 32 bit games even if you did emulate them (unless you found arm games). Theoretically you could but it's not a good idea and your not gonna have too good of an experience.

What happens if the individual component on the ssd dies (controller for example)? You can't do much with the rest of the data. On a hard drive at least you have a platter and if something fails like the head, you can still have a possibility of restoring most of your data. Same thing goes with storing important info on cassette tapes.
-
They will never die. Datacenter and if your drive fails you still have the disk with possibility to repair.

Cat 6 would also work as it can do 10gbps for up to 55 meters if you get to that point. It's also not as expensive as cat 6a.

Not connecting to l2tp vpn
MartinIAm replied to MartinIAm's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Fixed it by connecting a little later. Could've possibly been an issue with the usg blocking me due to authentication failure. -
I have setup an l2tp vpn server on my usg pro. When I try to connect to it from ios and Windows it connects perfectly fine. When I try to connect through my mac it doesn't work. I have made sure all the settings are the same but it still doesn't work. Troubleshooting steps I've taken: Delete the config and do it again. Type the user password and shared password by hand. Change the vpn address. Use a different RADIUS account. Use a different internet connection (different ip). I have also made sure that everything is correct in my unifi settings for my vpn server (as I can connect to it from anything other than macos). Here are my logs: Mon Jun 8 14:12:14 2020 : publish_entry SCDSet() failed: Success! Mon Jun 8 14:12:14 2020 : publish_entry SCDSet() failed: Success! Yes it is. I have formatted it many times. It still doesn't work though.
