  1. Are you running FreeNAS on a hypervisor or bare metal ?
  2. UNIX permissions are super easy to use and maybe easier to get everything working. Create a new user and group in FreeNAS and apply the permissions for the dataset. Then in windows when you access the drive, log in with the credentials you just created, that's it. Also works on mac/ linux exactly the same. Try it !
  3. Hey I have a x5660 as well ! Actually 2 of them in a dual socket mobo. 1080p is FINE as I said, but my dual x5660 can BARELY handle a 4k file. Thats why I said if you use 4k dont rely on cpu power. If you only care for 1080p no probem! . BUT Its SUPER not efficient and the i7 that OP has does not have h.265 decode on the cpu for most 4k. Also didnt know hw transcode was a plex pass feature. I bought plex pass a long time ago so I didnt notice, good point !.
  4. Some ISP's do not give you a public ip, they give you a private ip on their network. If that is the case for you you can't port forward without asking your isp to open a port for you. Check your ip and see if its a public ip or not. I guess a lot of people have already suggested this but its probably what your problem is.
  5. Guest additions is what enables the drag and drop feature. So its probably not compatible with Catalina. You could try downloading the latest version and reinstalling it to see if that helps. Remember to restart after installing it.
  6. Its not worth cpu trans coding. Just get the cheapest gpu that has H.265 and your i7 will work fine. While your i7 can probably handle 2 1080p trans codes I can assure you it will barely be able to handle 1 4k HDR h.265 file. Like @jason938 said with pgs subtitles it puts even more stress on your cpu. If you download 4k movies it will probably come with pgs subtitles. Depends on your needs, if you never use 4k files then your hardware is fine.
  7. Yes sorry I meant raid 10! NTFS while being updated is not close to being as currently updated as zfs and not as reliable as zfs which is software raid, whereas ntfs relies on your hardware to be reliable as well. But yea upgrading is not AS easy on zfs and it is different from using standard raid.
  8. Are you fixed on using windows server ? FreeNAS is a great software for small business's because of ZFS. ZFS is a really good file system that is being currently worked on and updated unlike ntfs (made in 1993, yikes!) which Windows uses. Seriously google zfs and you'll see how much more reliable it is. FreeNAS also has built in backup to b2 cloud providers like Azure. Raid 5 is a good medium for reliability. Raid 5 means, half of your total disks can fail. If you 4 512GB ssd's you'll get your 1tb and 2 of the ssd's can fail before data loss.
  9. Hey Linus, Whats the sound dampening material that you're talking about called? It may come useful in a project i'm doing for my car. I've been looking for something like that for a while.
  10. I think Apple adopted USB Type-C because they basically funded and helped make it. http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/14/apple-invent-usb-type-c/ Still, its unusual for them not to stick to their own standards.
  11. I would say just buy a cheap/stable ac router, pair it with a old laptop running pfsense and you got yourself a cheap yet beast of a router.
  12. I have had my fair share of shitty usb wireless ac cards on my pc. Both usb and pcie, they all degrade after a month and act like a 1990s piece of hardware. Finally I found the intel 7260AC pcie card which is in my PC right now and works flawlessly. At first I could not believe it, I did tons of stress testing and it managed to hold up. Im guessing you want a usb adaptor though. My advice is to just buy the 7260ac card and put it in your laptop. Its SOO much better than usb. If your using a desktop, pcie if you have a free slot. Good Luck
