Help setting up old computer as a File Server
KrisC123 replied to KrisC123's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
ive heard a lot about freeNas but im not too sure how many SATA connections i have on this computer. I do have several 2.5 inch hard drives would it be stupid to use one of those in this use case? Im honestly not too sure. I just know that i dont want to spend an awful lot of money as ill be moving country. it will mostly be used for storing music that ill not need to access unless my computer dies. So i guess i would like it to rip CD's to and to store things on, what would you reckon would be best? Ive always been interested in that sort of thing but at the moment i think i need a quick fix, but this is definitely put on a list and ill probably ask you a bit more on this in the future- 7 replies

I was given an old windows XP machine (currently running windows 7) with a monitor and keyboard, the works. Its taking up space and currently being used as a shelf for some Irish whiskey and the monitor as a makeshift headphone stand. Ive been having issues with my main computer -- Its been through the wars, having beer spilled on in (through no fault of my own.... i swear)-- so since the trouble has began, I'm afraid i will lose quite a lot of data. I had a look at the computer i was given and it has a 1TB hard drive in it. 4GB of RAM and an athlon x2. So im wondering if this would work as a simple file storage system to link up to my seemingly dying PC via a crossover cable, and if so, how would i go about doing that?

are there any free folder extraction tools?
KrisC123 replied to KrisC123's topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
Im an idiot. i just remembered Asterisk (*) in windows explorer search brings up all sub folders and files within a file. Whoops. sorry for the silliness guys and dolls -
Hey its been a long time since i posted anything on this but the community seems to much bigger and busier than ever. I was just wondering if there are any free folder extracting tools. Im not looking to extract .RARs or zips or anthing like that, i just have a lot of files in a lot of folders and i just want to extract them all to put them into one large folder instead of having to click through individual folders to find everything. Thanks for any help given. Hopefully there is something that will work.

Small mATX case, alternatives to Bitfenix Prodigy M
KrisC123 replied to acolombo's topic in Power Supplies
if you like the Prodigy, i would seriously consider the xigmatek quila. its a gorgeous mATX case with a similar layout to the Prodigy. -
even though i am not that much of a gamer i would like to have a pretty high end graphics card set up and just the ability to expand and try stuff out that i otherwise wouldnt be able to do with a smaller sized motherboard. and i would just like to have a decent amount of room to work about in its all about options for me. i dont want to buy something that doesnt allow for expansion because then when i do want to expand, ill have to buy a whole new setup
