  1. You prob find that windows is downloading its own drivers and overwriting the drivers that had been originally installed in the 1st place.
  2. I truly hope you are correct .. It would be nice to see, but I dont think it will happen https://medium.com/@ieeemuj/linux-on-desktop-is-not-ready-and-may-never-be-by-aneemesh-vidyarthi-4451c217f5fa Personally, I am one of those users that is coming to the unfortunate conclusion that the windows OS is better than Linux. I know a lot of people will prob be annoyed by that statement, but the fact of the matter is that things just work in windows and dont "just work" in linux. (Before u take a mass dump on me for using windows - Please read the last paragraph because I also dont like OG MS product anymore either) Ive been a Linux user for about the last 5/6 years after making the jump when the W7 support ran out, Ive used 4 different distros over that time (Pop/Manj/Mint/Ubuntu) and found that they are all great for the basics .. browsing web/office crap/media .. Gaming has been a different cup of tea for me as only certain kernels work with my GPU+Vulkan(ie AMDGPU) so its been a bit on/off. Anything else has been a pain in the ass tbh .. Plug and play is not a term you can associate with linux unless were talking about a kb+m. Everything is Linux .. Needs to be setup - Everything E.g I use DAW`s & Midi & Sometimes I plug in a mixing controller. 5 years ago ... This was practically impossible unless you loads of spare time to read a load of guides which only sometimes got slight results. 5 year ago in windows .. You just plug it in .. Install the drivers, load a DAW, set it up n bam, your on your way. Over the years as Pipewire has slowly been introduced .. its works/ it breaks/ it works .. a new kernel comes out .. it breaks n over n over Window over the years .. just works! Its the same with gaming, you say that linux keeps old systems alive, but it dont. My gpu is 11yr old (R9 290) and only once have I ever got it working with AMDGPU due to the lack of driver support in Linux .. Yes it works with the radeon drivers but I cannot play any dx10/11 games with this card unless I revert back to a kernel that supported the drivers (think it was 4.4) but then I wont be able to enjoy any of the current innovations that come with the latest one .. its either/either not both making it a bit pointless. .. Guess what tho ... Windows the great hater of old tech ... That still runs my card no probs Yes linux might run better on your pc & yes linux technically is free & so are a lot of its apps ... But after 5 years of use its the same ol story for me ... Progression is always there, but its constantly breaking things at the same time .. Unless you are a technical whiz-kid or have no life and all the time in the day to read guides that "might" work or attempt fixes that you hope wont break your system ... Personally Id rather wait the extra 20 seconds for windows to load because at least I know 99.5% of the time ... What I aim to do in that current moment .. Im going to be able to actually do. I will still be keeping a partition of mint on my drive tho as I can agree that it is a very fast program, has good security and is handy when I just want to do basic everyday stuff but Im already shifting back to a windows os for everything else cos Id like to actually use some of the products I have bought without having to spend half the day setting it up or fixing issues you didnt anticipate. I have gone back to a different approach to my issues with OS`s .. Years ago I used Window Black & Winborg (I miss WinBorg) .. These were essentially hacked & de-bloated versions of WinXP & 7 .. They were great & saved a lot of system resources. Now I am using ReviOs https://www.minitool.com/news/revios-11-download.html Believe me its a lot lot faster than OG windows+ it has a really handy feature that doesnt require you to have a MS account in order to just use it ... Crazy huh n to top it off "it just works". The only thing it doesnt have is a system wide EQ like pulse/easy effect hence the question above I would truly love to see Linux succeed, but I feel to many cooks have spoiled the broth .. ie there is just constant progression & hardly any stability - shame
  3. Hey and soz for the late reply ... I tried what you suggested and it did solve the issues with FFox, thx ... But the Steam game kept giving me issues, so not sure what was happening there? However its all irrelevant atm as last night I decided to pull out one of my spare SSD`s (that was totally blank/Unused) from my system and when I went to boot it back up ... It could not find the boot-sector of Pop or ReviOs Yes I could have spent all night trying to follow instructions off my phone on how to re-build the boot sector from a live usb ( I tried a bit ) .. But after the 4th guide that didnt work I gave up and installed MINT from scratch. Il leave this post open tho as I will be re-setting up the system to how it was before & its a good opportunity to see what happens with ALSA & Pipewire ... Fingers Crossed!
  4. Maybe it is .. Out of the two .... Is Arch or the Debian Route advised? ( used Linux for approx 4yrs, but dyslexic as F + ADHD ... Ie reading/letters is not my forte) On this topic Ive figured that its not actually Pipewire that's causing the issue but it actually ALSA. For some reason ALSA thinks that I have a 5.1 setup, when I only have stereo. Also ALSA keeps pushing the 5.1 meter levels to max and Ive tried editing via the terminal command, but it never seems to actually save the setting I leave it on ( even if I don't restart) This mainly only happens when I run this one game in steam ( its a very badly programmed game, so it could be just this game ) .. But I also find it happening when I open 2-3 seperate programs .. Ie FFox, Audacity & steam together ... Its almost feel like that Im getting a RAM bottling issue ... But I dont get this issue on ReviOS11 or Win 10 or a live usb of linux Mint. Im thinking of re-installing ALSA, but cant help thinking that somewhere, somehow .. I will just make the problem worse & then start crying again
  5. Hello & thx for the response. I thought that it had worked and I was amazed when I play the game last night without a glitch .. But then this happened today. ( turn ure sound down b4 playing ) Atm .. Im getting pi$$ed of with pop ... I think this is the issue as I never had issues with Pipewire on Manj & I never had issues with pulse on any other distro apart from Pop again .. In fact .. everytime I update Pop .. something breaks .. every bloody time. I moved from manj due to a codec issue that was causing me issues with playing vids ( I think it was the .mp4 codec) .. Does anyone know if that problem has been resolved & if not can you suggest a good distro that would be good for gaming & entertainment as that is all I really use my pc for these days and im getting annoyed with having to "fix" something on PopOS every flipping month.
  6. Hi, For some reason every time I load this 500mb dx10 game in steam ... https://store.steampowered.com/app/598810/Carcassonne__Tiles__Tactics/ My audio sounds like its being played off a record player. All i hear is constant glitching & crackling n I cant figure out what is going on (I do have the game running via WINE due to drivers issues with proton, so Idk if this matters?) Im running PopOs 22.04 with the Plasma KDE desktop with a i5-7600, 16gb RAM, r9 290. Im using Pipewire & easy effects ( this didnt happen with Pulse effects with the same hardware ) Ive tried re-installing Pipewire as per the PopOs instructions, but its still the same. Im kinda still a Linux noob (4yrs use) so am a bit lost as what to do to fix it as ive never come across a audio issue before Any suggestions?
  7. Hi, My drive could be failing (im not to sure) .. but the the other day I could not access it .. I only used this drive for file storage and gaming .. I Dual boot PopOs & W10. In the bios it says the drive is not there ... In W10 it says the drive is not there ... In PopOs, it shows the drive but I cannot access it and I get this error (The pop up) In Gparted .. The drive and the partitions are visible (so I assume they are still there?) As you can also tell, I found a few guides telling me how to restore the "superblock" but didnt get very far, I assume because most of the drive is in NTFS format. So does anyone know how I can restore the Superblock for a NTFS partition that isnt reconized in windows?
  8. I think Im SOL then .. Heres a photo of the systemd parameters that I setup before I blacklisted the Radeon drivers as per this guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU#Enable_Southern_Islands_(SI)_and_Sea_Islands_(CIK)_support I will go thru this guide and try again as this dude got it working on Arch and he has the same GPU as me, so it does work .. Just not for me atm https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=274737
  9. Yeh Ive tried that already as mentioned in the 3rd "my thoughts section" and I just get a black screen. If I modify the parameters on boot so that the radeon cik & si are enabled, It will boot fine. I assume that I cannot use AMDVLK due to it needing the AMDGPU module to be used so im trying to find some different drivers that might let me use Vulkan with this card ... You know of any?
  10. Hi and thx for the response. I realize that I need AMDGPU (This has been an on going 3 year venture for me), but I thought I had the AMDGPU modules installed on my system already? I have however been told in the past my the Manjaro Dev team and a few others on here that my card is not supported with AMDGPU module as my card is a gcn 2 and falls under the "experimental" category and that I would need to install the AMDGPU-pro drivers in order to get Vulkan working properly? I have been thru that wiki so many times, but I will give it another go since I am on a updated system (I last tried in 19.10 & 20.04, before I jumped over to Manjaro but similar results). I couldnt get a readout from the command you asked me to input, but I got these ones which I think are similar rob@pop-os:~$ lsmod | grep radeon radeon 1863680 61 i2c_algo_bit 16384 2 amdgpu, radeon drm_ttm_helper 16384 2 amdgpu, radeon ttm 98304 3 amdgpu,radeon,drm_ttm_helper drm_display_helper 184320 2 amdgpu, radeon drm_kms_helper 200704 3 drm_display_helper,amdgpu,radeon drm 589824 21 gpu_sched,drm_kms_helper,drm_display_helper, drm_buddy,amdgpu,radeon,drm_ttm_helper,ttm rob@pop-os:~$ lsmod | grep amdgpu amdgpu 12705792 0 iommu_v2 24576 1 amdgpu gpu_sched 49152 1 amdgpu drm_buddy 20480 1 amdgpu i2c_algo_bit 16384 2 amdgpu, radeon drm_ttm_helper 16384 2 amdgpu, radeon ttm 98304 3 amdgpu,radeon,drm_ttm_helper drm_display_helper 184320 2 amdgpu, radeon drm_kms_helper 200704 3 drm_display_helper,amdgpu,radeon drm 589824 21 gpu_sched,drm_kms_helper,drm_display_helper, drm_buddy,amdgpu,radeon,drm_ttm_helper,ttm rob@pop-os:~$ lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display' 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Do you know of any other open source drivers for Vulkan that I could give a go instead?
  11. Hi, (specs below) Im trying to follow this guide https://github.com/GPUOpen-Drivers/AMDVLK which advises how to install the AMDVLK so I can try and get my card working on Vulkan properly (R9 290). I followed the Ubuntu guide and everything went smoothly until I hit the "Build Driver and Generate JSON Files" section. When Inputting this instruction I get a error and Im stopped in my tracks > CMake Error: The source directory "/home/rob/xgl" does not exist. Specify --help for usage, or press the help button on the CMake GUI. As far as I can tell I have followed the guide properly but I have ADHD & Im dyslexic, so reading is deffo not my forte & I could have made a mistake. The only 3 things that are going thru my mind atm > 1 - The "script/build file" is pointing/looking in an incorrect directory for these files since I am running PopOs and not Ubuntu, but I do not know where/how/or even if I can/need to edit them myself? 2 - That I do not have the correct amdgpu firmware installed ... Its says in the "known issues" section that if you run this command sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/amdgpu_firmware_info that you can tell what firmware you have installed. I get cat: /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/amdgpu_firmware_info: No such file or directory. This suggests that its not installed? But the guide mentions that I might need to update it myself from this page https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/amdgpu But I have to admit I am totally lost as to what correct file to use from this site & how even to install it correctly The guide also kind of suggest that the firmware should already be installed as I am running kernel 6 leading me to believe that it could just be another "path" issue and it doesnt know where to find the firmware? 3 - That I am totally out of my depth once again and have got a real clue as to what I am doing I have tried adding the needed parameters to systemd to see if my card would work with the preinstalled AMDGPU driver & blacklisted the Radeon module .. but every time I get the black screen off death & then my TV loses signal too ♂ So Im now trying the AMDVLK route. Can anyone help? sudo lshw -c video [sudo] password for rob: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Hawaii PRO [Radeon R9 290/390] vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 12. Hi all & thx for the comments I saw the original vid that "Brodie" did on the codec issue, but thx for the updated link, I somehow missed that one and it was an interesting watch I also agree that if the steamdeck version efficiently of Manjaro has the codecs enabled ... Then the Native Os should do too? I find it very bizarre that they are going down this route as im sure other users are also jumping distros just because of this, but Im sure the Os will survive as imo It was probably one of the best distros that I have used in the past 15 years and the only one that made me finally adopt a linux Os as my daily driver, so Im finding this all a bit of a shame considering its not really anything to do with the Os, rather the legalities behind it. Where as 15/20 years ago I may have been up for taking "the training wheels" off due to the amount of spare time I had .. Im not in that situ anymore and dont have the time to do all the reading/learning etc .. So I think im just going to have to move away from Manjaro and go back to using PopOs again(This time with the KDE desktop!) and hope Debian stick with their stance and dont unlist the codecs needed in an update. Ralphred ... I know your intentions are good but I have tried native Debian in the past and found it a bit of a pita so Im reluctant to go back to it and have to learn how to setup a system all over again. Learning how to install drivers n very basic commands thru terminal or editing some config files is enough for me .. I used to tinker like mad in the past but now I just want to use my time to do the things I find even more fun, so an "out of the box" setup distro is what Im after and PopOs did that the best for me before I moved to Manjaro. You never know, I could one day move back to MJ, but as you put it yourself, hopping distros all the time .. is also a pita n I think u can prob tell .. Im not a man that enjoys pita`s Thx again all for your advice & suggestions!
  13. Hi, Ive been a Linux user for about the last 3 years but would consider myself still a relative noob due to my reluctance to learn how the whole Os actually works. I do not use it to code or program, Im just one of those users who made the move from W7 over to Linux due to W10 being a pita. I use my system mainly to game, watch vids, listen to music and surf the web. A few days ago my system was working fine with no lag. When I booted up the Os informed me that there was a kernel update of which I did (Im running 6.1.1-1 atm), I also updated the package manager & rebooted. Since then every time I try and view a video in FFox or the steam store .. Im literally getting 5-1- fps if Im lucky and its skipping frames all the time My initial thoughts were that the GPU drivers have mucked up again as I own a R9-290 and Manjaro does not support the AMDGPU-pro it drivers fully .. However, I checked my Os and found that i said I was still running the open source Radeon drivers so I was left a bit confused. I then checked the Manjaro forums and came across a post that advised that Mesa had effectively removed the codecs needed for AMD gpu`s and that if you wanted to use them you would either have to build/compile the kernel yourself to activate them or to actually purchase the codecs. https://forum.manjaro.org/t/amdgpu-losts-hardware-video-acceleration-va-api-vdpau-at-recent-update/128832 https://debugpointnews.com/fedora-37-mesa/ (another article advising the same) I ran vdpauinfo and confirmed a lot of codec support was missing from my system now I did find another post that gave an option to use a different driver https://forum.manjaro.org/t/best-way-to-get-h264-accelerated-again/130213/2 but I am reluctant in giving this a go as I really do not want to brick my system (again) and I do not have a 2nd pc to use for support instructions if I need to TTY due to another black screen boot up. So Im stuck with the drivers that comes with the Os for the time being & thus I will have no hardware video acceleration & thus 60% of my use on the PC does not work properly anymore making this Os a bit pointless for me now Apart from the fix(s) posted on the Manjaro site that I am not confident in performing successfully myself, there doesn't seem to be any long term solution for noobs apart from to re-install an older Os/Kernel from a flash drive and do not update - ever Does anyone know of a fix to this or are the links I have posted already the only fix to this?
  14. Hey Nayr438 .. I nearly forgot to come back with a update. Ironically I started to get some help from the peeps on the manjaro forums and whereas it was quite a long convo .. We managed to get Pipewire installed & running & thus I removed PEffects and the Boot errors finally disappeared Id still like to thank you for your input tho n I did suggest that I ran the commands to the manjaro peeps .. but I was promptly ignored twice n got the message not to. https://forum.manjaro.org/t/inxi-fazy-says-pipewire-is-running-but-i-cannot-delete-it-as-add-remove-says-it-isnt-installed/114602/49 On to my next venture ... Trying to get Vulkan running via my 29 290 (again) Ive recently read that apparently proton+vulkan now run via the pre-installed Radv drivers and the ACO compiler and I dont need to use amdgpu in order to get vulkan running on my system? Im prob going to make a new post cos I have a feeling that my knowlegde of all this is well out of date Anyway .. Thx again for you help
  15. I gotta pop out for a bit, but will give them a go and let you know how it goes Thx again Nayr438
  16. Hi Nayr438 & thx for helping I have tried in the past to use Pipewire & easyeffects - Failed and was advised that I cannot use Pipewire as im using Jack2 of which loads Via the Dbus & apparently Pipewire doesn't. https://forum.manjaro.org/t/cannot-install-manjaro-pipewire/102776/20 (comment 20 ( Chris Canyon )) Whenever I tried to install " manjaro-pipewire"via the guide on MJ-forums, I get the error - could not satisfy dependencies: - removing pulseaudio breaks dependency 'pulseaudio=16.0-1' required by pulseaudio-jack Sticking with PEffects as it works for the mo, but I`d rather use Easyeffects as it has a few more system options that I like the look of. Is there a way that I can find the GTK modules that are causing these errors so that I can try to either edit/remove or re-install them? .. Add/remove or discovery bring back no results. Also mass thx for helping with the other errors that you found .. I didnt even know they were an issue until you mentioned it .. I totally forgot that I installed Anbox & appimagelaucher yonks ago I have tried n get some help from the manjaro forums regarding this but they remain totally silent I was browsing reddit n came across this .. Id thought Id have a laugh n posted this .. I think I accidentally annoyed them .. Now I managed to gain even more silence .. Learnt my lesson tho & confirmed a internet stereotype .. Dont display humor in Linux forums
  17. Any help or links on how to do it myself would be great … Im unable to solve this issue myself n I really dont fancy re-installing the whole Os just cos of these errors, but they are driving me a bit potty as the amount of googling I have done over the past week to fix this is taking its toll. 19. Personally to me it sounds like ure HD is on the way out. The suggestions b4 are helpful but I would try to take a clone/snapshot of the drive https://www.maketecheasier.com/clone-entire-hard-drive-linux/ and then try access the files without having to fire up the drive again just to be safer.
  20. Hi, Using Manjaro KDE 5.24.5 After a recent system update I go this issue https://github.com/flathub/com.github.wwmm.pulseeffects/issues/64 As you can tell from the answer I received the modules that are causing the issue have nothing to do with pulse so I tried removing the modules but cannot as 1 is used with timeshift (xapp) and the other is used with gnome-disk-utility (canberra) programs. I do not wish to delete these programs. How can I stop pulse from trying to use these modules so this error goes away? Also on the same post I received advice on how to make it run in the back ground, but Im not to sure where to place this command? If I try and edit the application > command .. by adding "--gapplication-service" to the end, I get a error "Could not save properties due to insufficient write access to: ‘/home/rob/.local/share/applications/com.github.wwmm.pulseeffects.desktop’." Im a little stuck .. Any ideas?
  21. Also .. you do not need to switch HDD, M2 .. whatever ... just make sure u have at least 20% spare so that windows can use its cache properly - also make sure you havent played with that in the past too ( u may have changed something n forgotton (I do that )) https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-virtual-memory-size-windows-10
