  1. I actually agree. My brother is the one who wants it to be as small as possible, and I'm trying to work within his request. So just trying to collect info/recommendations, and then go from there.
  2. Hi everyone. I'm currently planning a build for a video editing PC (premiere pro) for my brother, whilst making it as small as possible. Fairly set on the main parts, but have a few questions about motherboard and case to fit everything in. Parts: Ryzen 5 3600 2x16GB 3200/3600mhz RAM 1650 super The challenge comes in because: - I need 10gb ethernet, and I don't see any good options for mini-ITX with 10gb. So I was planning on installing something like this (https://www.amazon.com.au/Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Network-Card/dp/B07G2DV9K2) - I have a spare 1TB U.2 NVMe SSD sitting around I would like to use With only 1 PCIe slot on mini-ITX motherboards, I need to get a motherboard with 2xM.2 slots to connect both of these. For the motherboard I'm looking at ROG STRIX B450-I GAMING (https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B450-I-GAMING/overview/). The ASUS and gigabyte x570 boards are other options, but they're both more expensive. Plan would be to put the NIC on the top M.2 using something like https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-e-1X-4x-Card-SSD-to-NGFF-M-2-M-Key-PCIE-Slot-Adapter-Screw-Drive-rl/353022676574 And then convert the bottom M.2 to U.2 using this https://www.startech.com/au/HDD/Adapters/u2-m2-adapter-nvme~M2E4SFF8643 Is there any issues with the motherboard that would prevent this? I assume with Ryzen 3 series I can use both M.2 at x4 each, which limits gpu slot to x8. Is this ok for video editing? The size of case my brother would like to use is: https://www.silverstonetek.com/raven/product-rv.php?pid=753 With this case my questions would be: - If the full height bracket is taken off the NIC, would it fit? The M.2 slot is already raised, and then the PCIe converter raises it more, and the NIC is several cm tall. - Does this case have space for the bottom M.2 to be utilised? Most cases have a cutout under CPU, and the M.2 is next to this, but I don't see it on the silverstone. And then we would need to make a minor modification to the case to create a spot for a female to male cat6. My preference would be to use something like this: http://www.lian-li.com/pc-tu150/ I would think that there would be enough height for the NIC at the top, and I can see the motherboard tray has a gap for M.2, seen here: However, this is a fair bit bigger than the silverstone and would be a lot more unwieldy to travel with. Assuming the silverstone isn't appropriate with my requirements, does anyone have recommendations of cases that's smaller than the lian li? Thanks!
  3. Recently built something similar for a media server, using the Fractal Arc XL and taking advantage of a hard drive cage of my other Fractal case. Have 10x3.5", 2x2.5", and still room for 2x3.5", with all 4x5.25" left (which is another 6x3.5" at least). Mainly a plex server so it has a basic i3-8100, which is fairly competent at transcoding thanks to the hd630 graphics. One question I had about this build was the inclusion of ECC RAM. Is it really necessary? What happens if it isn't used and there are memory errors, and how likely are they?
  4. thanks for the reply. yeah that's definitely an option, but would probably need to go 4x10TB to get a meaningful increase which is quite expensive. and I would probably tend towards selling them, which I wouldn't get much for I imagine (would also be a nice little project to get a linux NAS box going). your second point is good, and I could probably be less of a hoarder. but part of the reasoning is I share the Plex content with a friend at the moment, and would be cool if I could let other people connect as well (hence the question about transcoding).
  5. Hi all, At the moment I have a Synology 916+ with 4x6TB, and I've just got my first unlimited high speed internet connection, so I foresee a day in my near-future where I will run out of space. One option would be to buy the Synology extender bay, but this seems incredibly expensive for what it is. At the moment I'm thinking of just building a proper PC out of some parts I have around and putting it in a normal case. Install linux, use freenas/unraid, get some containers going for apps, etc etc. It might need to go up to 8-12 hard drives eventually; does anyone have any recommendations for cases that are available in Australia that would suit my needs? Additionally, I would plan to use it as a Plex server and was wondering if an i3 8100 would be enough to transcode 4k content. From Plex's website it sounds like with a passmark of 8000 I could transcode 2x 4k streams to 10mbps 1080p, but that almost seems unbelievable. Does anyone have experience with Plex transcoding on an i3 8100? Any other things I should consider?
  6. Oooh boy, I've had very similar problems with standby on my HTC 10. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for because it's not Samsung, but the experience was so similar I wanted to comment. Considering it's a 2 year old phone I get decent battery life during heavy use, but the idle use is terrible. If I didn't touch my phone for several hours it would still lose a significant amount of battery life, when others around me barely lose any battery %. I got to a point where I actually emailed HTC about it and there were some emails back and forth (that went nowhere). The best evidence I have is that the phone actually says that "Mobile network standby" is taking an insane amount of battery. This isn't a once off as I've seen this situation all the time.
