The support person was genuine, unless you are suggesting somebody modified my copy of Windows to intercept support requests from the built-up Get Help app, sent me a verification code from a Microsoft domain, and then proceeded to activate Windows for me to cover their malicious tracks.

This is not the first time it has happened as I shared that reddit post describing the exact same thing, from over a year ago. This is cleary a pattern of behaviour from the god awful support Microsoft has subcontracted.

Can confirm that's actually legit Microsoft Support via chat. Connected to them a few times in the past.

During the past two years they've actually made it harder to contact an actual person. And most of the numbers you see online do advise you to use Get Help or it's web version: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/home/contact?SourceApp=smc2&ContactUsExperienceEntryPointAssetId=S.HP.SMC-HOME

You have to be filtered through this Get Help app or link. You need a Microsoft account for this to work.

I'll hazard a guess they sent or provided you a service request number. 🙂

hi i have to make a difficult decision
i would like to upgrade my gpu and my cpu i currently have
    cpu: i5 7400
    GPU: GTX 1050 Ti 4GB
I only use my computer for gaming and not for processing things.
what will i do first my GPu or CPU

Might want to edit your first post and include vital information like hard drive, power supply, cooling, etc., etc.  Those would factor in on what people here will recommend.

Also what games are you planning?

We are going to build a pc for friend from our unused parts as a surprise gift:

    CPU: intel I7 3770

Ram: 4x4 Gb ddr3 (do not remember what ram)

    Monitor: 60hz 1080P

We have Gtx 770 and Gtx 1050. which of these two would you use in this build?

We need to buy new power supply after we decided which card to use.

Also, can somebody estimate what kind of performance this build can get in 1080P casual games (rocket league, Minecraft, Cs and these kinds of games...)

Yeah, the CPU and motherboard could fail at any time, because of their age. But it is better nothing. We are all uni students so we are broke so we try to do this as cheaply as possible.

Except for minecraft most of the games are esports titles. Both GPUs  will be okay performance-wise on those games.

This will be my first full build and I would like to keep it under $450. I was trying to base this build off of Linus's 500 dollar build from 3 months ago. I would be using this build for gaming and I would like it to be able to keep up with 1080p 60fps for at least a couple of years. The final pricing I got was around $540 which a bit over what I would like to spend. As you can see I went for 16gb of ram rather than 8gb and a 500gb ssd rather than 1tb (I already have a 1tb hdd to use for other files). I don't know if it is a viable option to go for 2x4gb of ram for now and maybe add two more sticks later on. If there are any other cost saving measures I could take please let me know. Thanks!

What games do you play though?

I don't have WiFi at my house, so I have to go somewhere else to download games. I need ideas for a PC that's small and can run windows 10. I'd prefer not to use a laptop because I'd like to modify in the future.

Use the Cheap Dell Gaminc PC guides floating all over the net minus the video card.  Spend the money for the video card on hard drive instead.

He said it stopped working a while ago and would basically all light up but there was no display output. Which I assumed was either a bad graphics card or something. What do you think I should do? How fast will it run? What was the Intel Equivalent of the processor at the time, do you know?

Depends on how much you're willing to spend.  If your parents already have a monitor and other peripherals already you might want to go with the Dell Optiplex Gaming PC route.

Found an old computer with these components.
What’s the best course of action?

Is it worth adding to it or should I start from scratch?

Depends on what you're using it for. Gaming? Web browsing PC for mom and pop with some Office applications in the side?

As is. The power supply needs an upgrade.  You can also add an additional stick of 8GB of RAM to make use of dual channel. Also an SSD.

My friend has a really old HP Pavilion p6320y with a m2n78-la motherboard which is a AM3 socket. I believe it still has the Phenom II x4 820 it came with. He says it no longer boots up.

I an trying to make a pc for my parents who at most web browse and use Excel. Is this computer worth fixing and putting back to. Or should I not bother and look for something else like a raspberry pi 4?

When was the last time he was using it?  Could just be a simple fix like maybe a reset of the BIOS or cleaning the RAM slots & contacts.

It's still pretty much capable of browsing the web and Excel.  Although you might need to make key upgrades like an SSD and at least 8GB or even more.

Is a Z68 chipset an overclocking board? I'm looking to push my CPU to around 4-5 GHz to keep up with modern systems. Xeons are harder to find where I am.

    ??????

    They usually are.

Have you tried in Lazada or Shopee for Xeons? IIRC some are sold there but the pricing might not be to your liking.

Some performance numbers for a 3770K in 2019:

I appreciated the feedback. Would an AMD Ryzen 3 2200G processor with Radeon Vega 8 graphics would be suitable to play games in case that I hold off on a dedicated GPU?! I still need to obtain Windows 10 and wish to remain close to my $500 CDN budget.

If you still have a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key, Windows 10 will still accept it for activation last I checked. So you may not have to spend money on an O.S.

Have to burn a Windows 10 disc, besides that no lol.

No need to burn to a DVD.  Since at least Windows 7, Microsoft has perfected USB installations for it's O.S.  So download the ISO and create a bootable USB installer of Windows 10.

You can also just download the Windows 10 ISO and use the Windows USB/DVD Tool that was released in the Windows 7 era to create the same bootable USB installer for Windows 10. The tool still works with Windows 10 ISOs by the way. Link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

Also another thing you might want to know, the Windows 10 installer will activate with a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key.  SO might be able to save if you have those keys lying around.  I tried this in the 1709 build of Windows 10 myself.  Should have not changed that much since then.

    Anyone got this...

You can tell who has on CS:GO as they are just playing for the stars so its spoiling the game lol

i.e. Casual- dust 2 map - if you tag the oppositions area 5 times you get 2 points....

So playing this and everyone is rushing to the area to tag and not play the actual game lol

I was like WTF!! whats everyone doing.. until i realised and then joined in lol

some where you use NOVA fro 25 kills in a game are fun

    Whats everyone thoughts

TBH the gameplay changes were the more interesting part of this update:

    "[ GAMEPLAY ]
    – Increased price of SG553 to $3000 to bring its price more in line with its value.
    – Reduced the price of FAMAS and Galil by $200 (to $2050 and $1800, respectively)
    – Improved full-auto spraying accuracy of FAMAS and Galil."

    Source: https://blog.counter-strike.net/index.php/category/updates/

So FAMAS and Galil meta incoming?

the second gen ryzen APU's use thermal paste, the newer APUs are soldered so it should run cooler and quieter

how much would that help me?

    2x4gb cost 43€

    1x8gb cost 30€
they have the same frequency and timings

i also wanted the b450 board for possible upgradebility. I know it's not really necessary for an office PC but i want to be on the safe side

If you're going to upgrade it in the future especially with that B450 board, why would the thermal paste vs. soldered argument matter? Also IIRC the whole thermal paste vs. soldered argument was only relevant if you were overlocking.

That's weird pricing on the RAM. Shouldn't it be cheaper since it's a smaller capacity stick? Although now that you mention it, dual channel might not be of much use for office work.
