  1. uuuh yes, obviously. Most people who have accounts in the forum are the most dedicated fans. Otherwise we would just be watching his youtube vids form time to time and nothing else.
  2. the thing is there are literally dozens of steam machines. it's not THE steam machine, it's the alienware xxx, the origin pc xxx, the falcon pc xxx, the cyberpower pc xxx etc.. With something like playstation, everything is rallied to one product, the PS1 and whatnot. Sony is also a much bigger company than valve with much more brand recognition than steam in the first place. It's much easier for them to get the playstation name out (which is now a household name that is used almost synonymously with "game console" by people who don't know the different consoles out there), instead of people remembering oh! the alienware x51 is a cool gaming machine but have you also heard of the cyberpower zx789? It's just not the same thing. Steam should have went with one partner instead of letting everyone get in on the thing.
  3. Just get a dell s2240M or acer H226HQL. They are most importantly better than these LG IPS monitors display quality wise (although ironically LG is the one that manufactures their panels lol), and they cost less and look better. Edit: S2240M was selling on microcenter with online ordering for 119$ recently, maybe it's still selling at that price. Otherwise, the acer and the dell are usually 139$.
  4. @Octoix Welcome to the forum! However please follow the guidelines in this forum so we don't have to waste time bombarding with questions such as peripherals, location etc..
  5. 99% of people out there with computers have never heard of steamos or don't know what it does. Xbox and playstation are household names, steam is less so, and steamos is basically unknown. This is why it will fail.
  6. @Visualantics This is the router I would get at this price: http://www.amazon.com/BUFFALO-AirStation-HighPower-Wireless-WZR-300HP/dp/B0096239FG/ You could get the similar looking version that's called the N600, but that one is exactly 80$, which is 5$ over your budget. Their more matte black box looking ones don't come with dd-wrt so don't bother.
  7. or just go buffalo, they come with DD-WRT by default so you don't have to worry about bricking your router or tinkering with crap. And NETGEAR has been total sh%t from my experience.
  8. then why are you asking, if you already know what's out there? And without more info, we can't really tell what you're asking for. A router doesn't really mean much because it's a generic term used for all sorts of other things. Chances are, you already have a router provided by your ISP. Those routers that turn the cable or dsl connection into ethernet are more than good enough. I'm assuming you're talking about a wireless access point that will also act as an ethernet switch.
  9. actually come to think of it, a laptop is a much better solution. It's small compared to a desktop (not as small as a nuc), can be carried around anywhere, and for 350$ you can easily get some decent i3 laptops. The windows license is included of course, and there's no hassle. You could even get a used i5 laptop off ebay for 350$
  10. smartvideo for youtube. I tried a couple other extensions but I like this one most because I can set it to buffer the whole entire video as soon as I start playing it. That way, I can just open a couple videos, then go in the middle of nowhere with no internet and still watch them (as if I had downloaded them)
  11. yeah my extension also automatically changes the youtube video to large size and to 1080p. All that stuff is in the options of the extension. It's called smartvideo for youtube. Here's the link for firefox, but I have to warn you from the reviews for the ff version, that they apparently update it less than the chrome version: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/smartvideo-for-youtube-mytube/
  12. like @dizmo said, I would go with an intel NUC with an i3. Their newest model has a 2.5" hard drive mount, so you won't have to buy some stupid msata drive. It'll cost less than 400$ total, and will be small, quiet (no fan at all, just a passive heatsink) and more than powerful enough. Heck it'll probably cost you less than building a similar build yourself with wi-fi and all. Here's the link to the i3 nuc with a 2.5" hard drive mount: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-DisplayPort-i3-4010U-Consumer-BOXD34010WYKH1/dp/B00HOJAVDG/ So that's 290$, + you'll want to spend 40$ on ram, and the rest on a 50$ hard drive.
  13. That's why I use a special extension on Chrome that makes youtube automatically buffer the whole video no matter what just like in the good old days (usually it buffers just a couple dozen seconds in front of you and then waits for you to catch up)
